Celebrating Magna Carta and the Rule of Law

12–13 November 2015 Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil

The International Bar Association is proud to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta with three conferences in 2015. The second of these essential one-day conferences takes place in São Paulo, Brazil.

The idea of the essential characteristics of a free society – that all, including kings and presidents, are subject to the law –

originated with the Magna Carta and other medieval charters such as the Oath of Aragon. The Magna Carta has survived as

a key document passing the ‘seed of freedom’ down the generations to modern times. As the basis of the rule of law, this

historic document was instrumental in the development – and is crucial to the continuing realisation – of the principal aims

and objectives of the IBA.

Sessions include:

• The relevance of the principles of Magna Carta and other charters such as the Oath of Aragon, to Latin America today

• Challenges to the rule of law in Latin America

• The lawyers’ role in upholding democracy

• Independence of the judiciary and limits on government power

Who should attend?

Lawyers in private practice, lawyers in government, in-house counsel, international business

professionals, members of the judiciary and legal academics from across the world.

ALL CONFERENCE WORKING SESSIONS AND CONFERENCE MATERIALS WILL BE IN ENGLISH, PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH. SIMULTANEOUS TRANSLATION INTO PORTUGUESE AND SPANISH WILL BE PROVIDED.

International Bar Associationthe global voice of the legal profession

The International Bar Association (IBA), established in 1947, is the world’s leading organisation of international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. The IBA influences the development of international law reform and shapes the future of the legal profession throughout the world. It has a membership of more than 55,000 individual lawyers and over 200 bar associations and law societies spanning all continents. It has considerable expertise in providing assistance to the global legal community.

Grouped into two divisions – the Legal Practice Division and the Public and Professional Interest Division – the IBA covers all practice areas and professional interests, providing members with access to leading experts and up-to-date information. Through the various committees of the divisions, the IBA enables an interchange of information and views among its members as to laws, practices and professional responsibilities relating to the practice of business law around the globe. Additionally, the IBA’s high-quality publications and world-class conferences provide unrivalled professional development and network-building opportunities for international legal practitioners and professional associates.

The IBA’s Bar Issues Commission provides an invaluable forum for IBA member organisations to discuss all matters relating to law at an international level.

The IBA’s Human Rights Institute (HRI) works across the Association, to promote, protect and enforce human rights under a just rule of law, and to preserve the independence of the judiciary and the legal profession worldwide.Other institutions established by the IBA include the Southern Africa Litigation Centre and the International Legal Assistance Consortium.

The Rule of Law ForumThe Rule of Law Forum (formerly the Rule of Law Action Group – RoLAG) was formed in early 2007, following the very successful Rule of Law Symposium in Chicago, 2006, organised jointly by the IBA and the American Bar Association. It is an entity within the IBA’s Section on Public and Professional Interest. The Forum’s purpose is to encourage and assist the membership of the IBA, both member organisations and individual members, to respond to the call of the IBA Council, at the end of its Resolution passed in September 2005, ‘to speak out in support of the Rule of Law within their respective communities’.

The forum currently has a membership of several hundred individual lawyers and is actively seeking additional members to assist in its most important work. For more information or to join the Rule of Law Forum visit www.ibanet.org/PPID/Constituent/Rule_of_Law_Forum/Default.aspx.
