September Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by the President at 7 PM. We were reminded that our monthly social will be held at October 12th at 1 PM at Kathleen and Ted Mowinski's and Mario Fazio’s on October 15th. The President began a discussion on getting involved in attending more shows and trying to improve every year. Possibly joining with another Club. It was also decided that we will stay with NCCC for the coming summer, but that may change for next year. Two planning members will discuss and decide what type of shows we are interested in attending. Also, we are going to see if Aurora Farms would be interested in our Club’s putting on a show there this summer. The meeting was adjourned at 8 PM.

Manoli, Secretary

Car and Driver uncovers trouble with Corvette Stingray's LT1 V8

There are two kinds of supercars: those made by niche manufacturers and those made by

mainstream ones. The niche supercars tend to be a rarer and more exotic sight, but some

buyers opt for more mainstream supercars because, for one reason at least, they'll be more

reliable. Right?

That's not always the case, as Car and Driver recently found out. The publication's Corvette

Stingray long-term tester blew out its LT1 V8 engine entirely after only 6,000 miles,

necessitating a complete replacement. Fortunately, it was under warranty, but it contributed to

the 'Vette having to spend an inordinate amount of time in the shop – something you might

expect from a small Italian manufacturer, for example, but not from one of the largest

automakers in the world.

The problem apparently boiled down to metal debris from a bad oil filter getting into the

lubrication system, knocking out a con-rod bearing and totaling the engine block. GM is

reportedly investigating the issue, which was just one of several problems C/D encountered with

the flagship Chevy, but which hasn't stopped our compatriots in Ann Arbor from enjoying the

time they've had so far with the all-American supercar, or from taking it on long-distance road

trips to Indiana, Illinois (Chicago), even Virginia and New Jersey.

Here's Chevy's Plan For The Mid-Engined 2017 'Corvette Zora'

Corvette Zora ZR 1

The mid-engined Corvette is the automobile magazine's white whale; an elusive beast that

always seems so close and yet, always, just of reach. This time Car and Driver thinks it's really

going to happen. Here are the details.

The full preview of the vehicle, with research by Don Sherman and renders from the likes of Ken

Okuyama and Camilo Pardo, is in the October issue of C/D, which you can find on newsstands

now. As always, you can also see their ongoing coverage of the Corvette here. — Editor's Note.

GM’s head of global product development, Mark Reuss, confirms that the Company is working

on the next Corvette. Our sources elaborate on this salient piece of information, telling us that,

after 61 years of evolution, the C8 will be revolutionary.

The new Corvette will be the mid-engined American Dream Machine that Chevy couldn’t, until

now, muster the courage to build. In truth, the factory is still not prepared to detail what’s

coming, which is why you’re looking at the 2017 model year through our freshly waxed crystal

ball.

THE PLAN: The C8 flagship, the Zora ZR1, will debut the new mid-engine architecture.

Launching as a 2017 model, it will define the top of the Corvette hierarchy just as its precursors

Page 6: Celebrating our 40 Anniversary 1974-2014 The Blue Flameneovc.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/October-2014.pdf · impressive vehicles including the latest Porsche 911 Turbo S, Nissan

did in 1990-1995 C4 generation and 2009-2013 C6 model years. As before, the ZR1 will be low

volume, roughly 1500 units per annum, and high priced. We figure around $150,000.

THE ENGINES: Small-block V-8s will remain the engine of choice—at least for the near

future. And, beginning with the Zora ZR1, they’ll nestle just in front of the rear axle.

THE STRUCTURE: Today’s aluminum space frame will need a heavy massage to provide the

C8 with strong, stiff bones. But it’s doable: The robotic frame fabrication GM tooled up for the

C7 can be expanded and reprogrammed to serve the coming car.

THE BODY: Doors are the next logical candidate for conversion from sheet-molded fiberglass

to lighter, stiffer, crash-resistant carbon-composite assemblies. Current Corvette supplier, Plasan

Carbon Composites, manufactures carbon-fiber panels for both the Corvette and the Viper, and

this firm has the ability to supply additional parts using its advanced press-press processes.

THE CHASSIS: Expect the current control-arm suspensions, composite leaf springs, adjustable

magnetic dampers, and Brembo brakes to carry on with appropriate revisions.

2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Hits 60 MPH in 2.95 Seconds

GM has released its internal testing data for the new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. The impressive performance stats put the new supercharged Corvette Z06 in the rarified supercar realm.

When equipped with the new paddle shift eight-speed automatic, the new 650-hp Corvette Z06 with Z07 Performance Package (Brembo carbon ceramic brake rotors, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and full aerodynamic package) hits 60 mph in 2.95 seconds and reaches the quarter-mile in 10.95 seconds, according to GM's tests. The Corvette Z06 with the Z07 pack and standard seven-speed manual transmission reaches 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and finishes the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds. GM claims the Corvette Z06 has a 127-mph trap speed regardless of transmission.

Those acceleration claims put the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 among some

impressive vehicles including the latest Porsche 911 Turbo S, Nissan GT-R, and

discontinued Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series. The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 making an SAE-certified 650 hp and

650 lb-ft of torque.

Stopping from 60 mph takes just 99.6 feet with the Brembo carbon ceramic brake rotors. GM claims the Corvette Z06 pulls 1.2 g in lateral acceleration. That stopping distance is the best result of any production car tested by GM, while the lateral acceleration number bests the 1.13 g posted by the best Corvette previously tested. The new Corvette Z06 also beats the previous Corvette ZR1 around the automaker’s 2.9-mile Milford Road Course making it the fastest production car around that track.

Those handling numbers are due in part to the Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the Z07 package’s aggressive aerodynamics package, which gives the new Corvette Z06 the most downforce of any car GM has tested.

“The Corvette has long been known as America’s sports car,” said Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president of Global Product Development, in a release. “With the capability of the new Z06 rivaling the best performance cars in the world, we will also be America’s Supercar.”

With a base price of $78,995 for the coupe and a price of $83,995 for the convertible, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is set to be a bargain-priced supercar. The coupe is scheduled to go on sale in early 2015, while the convertible will arrive in the second quarter.

2014 La Maccina Molto Bella Car Show On September 14th, the second annual invitation only La Macchina Molto Bella Car Show was held on the driving range at River Woods Golf Course and Driving Range behind Todaro’s Party Center in Cuyahoga Falls on Akron-Peninsula Road. The event is organized by Frank Todaro and David C. Nelson to benefit the Kidney Foundation of Summit County, in memory of Mr. Todaro’s father, Mel Todaro. 476 cars attended the show. Three of our club members were invited to display their cars. Eric Gordon was asked to bring his 1985 AC Mk IV Cobra with a Ford 302 cu. in. 330 hp engine. As Eric’s Cobra had no top that day and we left at 7:30 am, he was a block of ice when we arrived and it took him a couple of hours to thaw out. Ed and Rose Suit were requested to bring their Retro ’63 split window Grand Sport Vette. In addition, Lou Morganti was asked to show his 1961 Vette and his 1956 Thunderbird. Lou and the Suits were fortunate to have prime spots with their own Tee Box. Photos of all four cars and some general show pics are being sent to our newsletter editor. In addition to several pristine Corvettes representing all generations, there were rows of Ferraris, Maseratis, Lamberghinis, old and new, on display. For the first time that I can recall, a McLaren was even on display. The venue was perfect as was the weather and a good time was had by all. I hope we’re invited back next year. ED Suit
