For 24 hours, the 16 motivated teams ran or walked 4000 laps and raised $88,000 - and also a deeper awareness of how cancer touches so many lives. But behind the scenes was another team of people who weren’t wearing out shoe leather around the oval – scores of volunteers, supporters and sponsors without whose commitment Albany’s fourth Relay for Life could not have been such a success. Led by co-chairs of the committee Trish Travers and Ilona Diessner, this major logistical event progressed seamlessly through a program of live entertainment and special ceremonies, with an abundance of wonderful home-cooked food to sustain all those involved. Next year’s Relay is already being planned and the committee would love to see some new faces on the committee and more teams involved. A meeting on May 17 will be reviewing the 2011 event and anyone interested in attending can phone Trish on 0488 245 599 for more details. People Power Ken Ewers-Verge is a man who gives generously to his community- in fact he tends to bob up all over the place! Like many other unsung heroes who volunteer for a diversity of causes, Ken’s numerous skills and varied career path are mirrored in his involvement around Albany. Ken is a baker by trade, has run his own business and worked for other bakeries. His family moved to Albany in 1973, and he has been a Minister of the Church of Christ, and is kept busy as a civil marriage celebrant. But it is his background in radio and television which defines Ken best in the community. In his spare time he ‘dabbles with electronics’ and contributes his extensive experience and broadcasting skills to Albany’s community FM radio station. Ken is often invited to be MC at numerous events, including the Anzac Day Dawn Service and Relay for Life, but is probably best known as the presenter of Carols by Candlelight – a role he has performed almost continuously since 1974. He also part of Australian Volunteers Abroad and will celebrate his official retirement in August by going to Papua New Guinea for five weeks to teach students to make bread. Now why doesn’t that surprise us? When everything is coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane. Everyone has a photographic memory. Some people just don’t have film. He who laughs last thinks slowest. There are over 25 million bubbles waiting to burst out of each bottle of Champagne. Terroir and Table“Quality seasonal produce first, with as little manipulation as possible; the idea is to enhance, not mask natural flavours.” This is the simple but effective advice from Xavier and Janette Poupel, who launched their unique mobile catering service Terroir and Table last year. The name is evocative of convivial dining, which enables international chef Xavier and his team to focus on what they do best - live cooking and delicious provincial-style cuisine of many different traditions. This practice also encourages the sharing of knowledge with the chef and greater appreciation of beautifully presented fresh seasonal produce, prepared traditionally in their mobile wood-fired oven.Xavier says “The choice of name for our business is a measure of our combined passion for authentic culinary practices and a desire to communicate the value of preserving and protecting all food and Terroir traditions and cultures. Terroir assigns regionality and uniqueness and we are also integrating some of the Australian native bush terroir plants and flavours produced in the Great Southern into our extensive menu.” To discover more about this unique culinary experience check contact details in the advertisement on this page.

Strawberries are the only fruit whose seeds grow on the outside. To make half a kilo of honey, bees must collect nectar from over 2 million individual flowers.

Gourmet GossipGluten free microwave fudge shared by Linda at Sea Salt CaféIngredients: 3 cups of milk chocolate chips; 1 can sweetened condensed milk (395gm); 1/4 cup of butter; 1 cup chopped nuts. Method: Place all ingredients except nuts in a large microwave safe bowl. Microwave on medium (50%) until choc chips are melted, 3-5 minutes, stirring once or twice while cooking. Stir in nuts and pour into a lined baking tray, 20 cm x 20cm. Refrigerate until set. Delicious!

Cold weather comfort food By Rebecca CommonsIt’s fig season! These little treasures are plump sweet and delicious and ready to be turned into all manner of gourmet snacks. I like mine stuffed with blue cheese and pancetta and flashed under the grill. Plums, peaches are available at the market stalls as well as strawberries and Valencia oranges. Combine them with this season’s fresh rhubarb, for an explosion of flavours underneath a brown sugar and ginger crumble: cold weather comfort food at its best! Eggplant, zucchini, swedes, turnips, beetroot, capsicum, potatoes and sweet potato ~ what a colour combination! They’re all in season and work well chopped and thrown in a big tin, with garlic, herbs and olive oil. Roast until soft and caramelised.

Cakes by RebeccaOur regular Gourmet Gossip scribe Rebecca Commons doesn’t just write about food – she is a fabulous cook and is launching her new gourmet cake making business. Customised gateaux, special events cakes, gorgeous cup cakes for any occasion are just a few of the delectable treats to enhance any official function or party. Rebecca can be contacted at [email protected] for more information. You can also visit her blog, Bowl of Cherries at lifeis-a.blogspot.com/
