30 Year Flight to Freedom – NEWSession #3 – November 7, 14, 21Thursday,10:45 am–12:00 noon

Have you ever read those novels of someone who fled their country leaving behind family and everything precious to them? If so, I am here to share my story firsthand of our escape from communist Romania in 1970 – the risks, the fears and the role faith played in our determination to find a better place for our family. You will learn how we planned our escape, the challenges of education, persecution, discrimination and the experiences of our journey without jeopardizing our freedom for family. Our arrival in the United States was a dream that came true, with the major force being determination, faith and hard work.

What countries did your ancestors immigrate from and what was going on historically that caused them to leave? What did they do for a living? Whom did they leave behind? What might they have experienced living in a very different time? Whether you are just starting your genealogy or have been working on genealogy for many years, we will review key resources available to you as you mine for information. There will be plenty of resource examples taken from my family trees to show how information can be pieced together. How New Were Art Nouveau and Symbolism? – NEW

Session #2 – October 9, 16, 23

Wednesday, 10:45 am–12:00 noon

Art Nouveau (“New Art”) was a major movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was new in the sense that it rejected its immediate predecessors but was related to earlier periods. Art Nouveau could consist of plant or mosaic images, grotesques, curves or perpendicular lines – enough variety for anyone! Architecture, interior design, and home décor from Paris, Vienna, Brussels and Riga, etc., will illustrate its variations. Representative artists include Tiffany, Mucha, Toulouse-Lautrec. Symbolism possessed some relationships with Art Nouveau. Symbolism had its greatest influence on painting and literature. Why did they decline if they were so popular?

Good Pain/Bad Pain – NEWSession #2 – October 10, 17, 24

Thursday, 1:45 pm–3:00 pm

Pain is an integral part of the human condition. We are served by painful feedback at physical and emotional levels. “Good” pain helps us to place boundaries on ourselves within which we are capable of balance. When pain extends beyond its biopsychosocial function, we suffer. “Bad” pain can lead to adverse behaviors, and these behaviors put us in harm’s way. This course is intended to provide the learner with tools to mitigate the suffering and untoward consequences of “bad” pain. Not intended as an alternative to seeking timely advice and treatment from a duly licensed provider, this course will include general tips for distinguishing “good” from “bad” pain.

The Science (and Art) of Happiness – NEW Session #3 – November 7, 14, 21

Thursday, 1:45 pm–3:00 pm

The search for happiness has been a basic human goal since humanity evolved. But what makes for a happy life? This course explores this timeless question by going beyond speculations to offer a scientific slant. How does happiness vary by culture? Are people happier today than in the past, and how does happiness change with age? Is our happiness set point determined by our biology, and how much can we improve our day-to-day joy in life? Join me at the happiest place on earth, as I share the explosion of current psychological research devoted to having a fulfilling life.

Instructor: Janet Belsky Janet Belsky (Ph.D, Psychology, University of Chicago) has been teaching courses and writing textbooks in human development for the past 40 years. She is the author of Experiencing the Lifespan, now in its fifth edition, a market-leading undergraduate text in the field. She has also written textbooks in child development, aging and adult development and a popular book in gerontology. In her search for a happy life, Janet recently moved to Celebration to enjoy this beautiful community and (of course!) be near her son.

Towns & Places in Tampa, St Pete & Vicinity Session #2 – October 10, 17, 24

Thursday, 10:45 am–12:00 noon

Most of us were not born and raised in Florida so we’re not familiar with the history or sites to visit. Did you know that Tampa was originally Fort Brooke? Or that Pyotr Dementyev brought the railroad into the area, and as the winner of a coin toss, he got to name the area after Saint Petersburg, Russia? There are so many places to visit in the area: Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Holocaust Museum, Solomon’s Castle, Salvador Dali Museum, Honeymoon Beach, FL Railroad Museum, Loews Don Cesar Hotel – and that’s just a small sample! Come and learn all about the area – just an hour or two drive from Celebration.

Instructor: Audrey Byllott Audrey Byllott has loved Florida since she moved here in 2003. Her banking career and real estate involvement may have nothing to do with traveling and seeing the sites, but her love of being a tourist does!
