John Lennon

When Lennon decided that he wanted to try making music himself, he andfellow Quarry Bank High School friend, Eric Griffiths, took guitar lessons at HuntsCross in Liverpool, although Lennon gave up the lessons soon after. Lennonstarted The Quarrymen in March 1957.[35] On 6 July 1957, Lennon metMcCartney at the Quarrymen's second concert at the St. Peter's Church WooltonGarden fête.[36][37] McCartney's father told his son that Lennon would get him"into a lot of trouble", but later allowed The Quarrymen to rehearse in the frontroom at 20 Forthlin Road.[38][39] There, Lennon and McCartney began writingsongs together. The first song Lennon completed was "Hello, Little Girl" when hewas 18 years old, which later became a hit for the Fourmost. McCartneyconvinced Lennon to allow George Harrison to join the Quarrymen (eventhough Lennon thought Harrison to be too young) after Harrison played thesong "Raunchy" for Lennon on the upper deck of a bus. Harrison joined the bandas lead guitarist, and Stuart Sutcliffe — Lennon's friend from art school — laterjoined as bassist. After a series of name changes, the group decided on TheBeatles. Lennon was always considered the leader of the group, as McCartneyexplained: "We all looked up to John. He was older and he was very much theleader - he was the quickest wit and the smartest and all that kind of thing".

Paul McCartney

From May 1960, The Beatles were managed by Allan Williams, who booked themto perform at a club in Hamburg. For the next two years, The Beatles remained inHamburg for much of the time, performing as a resident group in a number ofHamburg clubs. During their two-year Hamburg residency they returned toLiverpool from time to time, performing at the Cavern club. Prior to the end ofthe residency, Sutcliffe left the band, so McCartney, reluctantly, became TheBeatles' bass player. The Beatles recorded their first published musical materialin Hamburg, performing as the backing group for Tony Sheridan on the single"My Bonnie". This recording later brought The Beatles to the attention of a keyfigure in their subsequent development and commercial success, Brian Epstein, who became their next manager. Epstein eventually negotiated a recordcontract for the group with Parlophone in May 1962. After replacing Best withRingo Starr on drums, The Beatles became popular in the UK in 1963 and in theUS in 1964. In 1965, they were each appointed Members of the Order of theBritish Empire. After performing concerts and tours almost non-stop for a periodof nearly four years, and giving more than one thousand four hundred liveperformances internationally, The Beatles gave their last commercial concert atthe end of their 1966 US tour. They continued to work in the recording studiofrom 1966 until their breakup in 1970. In the eight years from 1962 to 1970, thegroup had released twenty-four UK singles and twelve studio albums, alongwith further US releases.

Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr was born Richard Starkey to Richard and Elsie Starkey (née Gleave),at 9 Madryn Street, Dingle, Liverpool. His parents split up when he was threeyears old, and his mother subsequently married Harry Graves, who encouragedhis interest in music. Starr was afflicted by illness for much of his childhood. When aged six, he contracted appendicitis, which developed complications, causing him to fall into a coma. At thirteen, he developed chronic pleurisy andwas admitted to a sanatorium for two years. After this extended hospital visit hedid not return to school. The periods of hospitalization left him behindscholastically, and as a result he was ineligible to attend grammar school or evensit its Eleven plus qualifying examination. Starr went to Dingle Vale SecondaryModern School, leaving in 1955. Whilst there, he showed an aptitude for art anddrama as well as practical subjects including mechanics. Starr's health problemshad another enduring effect in the form of allergies and sensitivities to food, andwhen The Beatles travelled to India in 1968, he took his own food with him.

Like John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, Starr became caughtup in Liverpool's skiffle craze. In 1957, he and his friend Eddie Miles formed TheEddie Clayton Skiffle Group. In 1959, he joined the Raving Texans, now adoptingthe stage name "Ringo Starr" because of the rings he wore and because itsounded "cowboyish", and his drum solos were billed as "Starr Time". By October1960 the band was renamed Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, and while theywere performing in Hamburg, Starr met The Beatles. After returning to the UK,he sat in for Pete Best as The Beatles' drummer on several occasions, and whenThe Beatles removed Best as their drummer on 16 August 1962, Starr was theirchoice to replace him. Best's fans were upset, holding vigils outside Best's houseand fighting at The Cavern Club, shouting 'Pete forever! Ringo never!'

Marilyn MonroeMarilyn Monroe was born June 1, 1926 – died August 5, 1962. born has NormaJeane Mortenson, but baptized Norma Jeane Baker, was an American actress, singer and model.

After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a careeras a model, which led to a film contract in 1946. Her early roles were minor, buther performances in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950) were wellreceived. She was praised for her comedic ability in such films as GentlemenPrefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, Some Like It Hot and The Seven YearItch, and became one of Hollywood's most popular and glamorous performers.

The typecasting of Monroe's "dumb blonde" persona limited her careerprospects, so she broadened her range. She studied at the Actors Studio andformed Marilyn Monroe Productions. Her dramatic performance in WilliamInge's Bus Stop was hailed by critics, and she won a Golden Globe Award for herperformance in Some Like it Hot.

The final years of Monroe's life were marked by illness, personal problems, and areputation for being unreliable and difficult to work with. The circumstances ofher death, from an overdose of barbiturates, have been the subject ofconjecture. Though officially classified as a "probable suicide," the possibility ofan accidental overdose has not been ruled out.

In 1999, Monroe was ranked as the sixth greatest female star of all time by theAmerican Film Institute.

Sophia LorenSophia Loren (born September 20, 1934) is an Italian film actress. She is widelyconsidered to be the most popular Italian actress of her time and is also famousfor being a major international sex symbol.

Loren was born Sofia Villani Scicolone at the Clinica Regina Margherita in Romeon September 20, 1934, to Riccardo Scicolone and Romilda Villani. Riccardorefused to marry Romilda, leaving her, a piano teacher and aspiring actress, without support. Romilda, Sofia and sister Maria returned to Pozzuoli, nearNaples, to live with Sofia's grandmother in order to survive.

During World War II, the harbor and munitions plant in Pozzuoli was a frequentbombing target of the allies. During one raid, as Sofia ran to the shelter, she wasstruck by shrapnel and wounded in the chin. Subsequently the family moved toNaples and begged distant relatives to take them in.

After the war, Sofia and her family returned to Pozzuoli. Grandmother Luisaopened their living room as a pub, selling homemade cherry liquor. Romildaplayed the piano, Maria sang and the shy Sofia waited tables and washed dishes. The place was very popular with the American GIs stationed nearby.

When she was 14 years old, Sofia entered a beauty contest in Naples and, whilenot winning, was selected as one of the finalists. Later she enrolled in actingclass and was selected as an extra in the Mervyn LeRoy film, Quo Vadis, thuslaunching her career as a motion picture actress. She eventually changed hername to Sophia Loren. Loren first met Carlo Ponti in 1950 during a beautycontest in which he was a judge. Having helped launch Gina Lollobrigida's ca-reer, he had Loren do many small parts. Later, while in Mexico in 1957, he hadlawyers obtain a Mexican divorce from his wife Giuliana and a marriage by proxyto Loren. Italy did not recognize divorce at the time, and the Catholic Churchdenounced their marriage. In 1962 the marriage was annulled. After this hearranged with Giuliana for the three of them to move to France, which at thattime allowed divorce, and they became French citizens. In 1965 Giuliana Pontidivorced her husband, allowing Ponti to marry Loren in 1966 in a civil weddingin Sèvres.
