UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

School of Dentistry Office of the Dean

Welcome graduates, faculty, staff and guests to the 2016 School of Dentistry Commencement Ceremony! We are here to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments and newest members of our oral health professions; dentists, dental therapists, dental hygienists, dental scientists, and dental specialists.

To our graduates: graduation from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry is an event like no other in your lives. Today is not simply recognition of completed coursework, acquisition of knowledge or acquiring new job skills, it is a moment when you join us. You are now our colleagues in the oral health professions and dental specialties. You are now devoted to improving lives through better health. It is an enormous responsibility that you take on, and also a great vocation. Your identity as a person will be enriched and more meaningful in your vocation as an oral health professional.

In the oral health professions you will have the daily opportunity to puzzle out problems and to diagnose disease. You will have the chance to create new structure and to improve function. What you create will be beautiful and admired. You will become an important part of your patients' lives and you will make friendships among your teachers, colleagues, staff, and perhaps, even your future students, that will last a lifetime. Simply put, you will have a rich and rewarding life in dentistry.

To our graduates' families and guests: thank you for celebrating with us today and thank you also for the support you have given your student during these arduous years of demanding (and expensive) education. You can be proud to know that they could never have done it without you. Your encouragement, pride in your student's achievement, and personal help has created the event we are having today. The success of these graduates and a bright future in oral health care practice, are in great part due to you as well.

We, the faculty and staff who have readied you to launch the next chapter of your life, consider it a privilege to have worked and learned side-by-side with you and our own lives have been enriched and made more meaningful because of it. We know you are well-prepared to make the world better with good oral health. We are so very proud to call you alumni of this great University and School of Dentistry and to welcome you as our colleagues. It is my honor and privilege to extend my most personal and heartfelt congratulations to you and your families.

Student Speakers Fouad Badr was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and moved at an early age to Montreal, Canada, where he was raised. He earned a doctor of dental medicine degree at the University of Montreal in 2009 and was in private general practice for four years in Yellowknife, Canada, prior to beginning his residency in the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. During his residency, Dr. Badr enjoyed opportunities to collaborate on a book chapter with University faculty and to lecture at the dental school's annual continuing dental education seminar "What's New in Dentistry." Dr. Badr plans to continue serving the community by providing patient

centered prosthodontic care in private practice while keeping his affiliation with the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, to which he is forever grateful.

Jennifer L. Schleifer, originally from Omaha, Neb., moved to Edina, Minn., where she now lives with her husband, David. Ms. Schleifer served as president of her dental hygiene class (2014-2016), was executive vice president of the Council of Students (20 15-20 16), and sat on the legislative council for Professional Student Government. During her time in the dental hygiene program at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, Jenna served on numerous committees including Strategic Planning, Marketing Task Force, Education Planning, Dental Hygiene Admissions, Professor of the Year Award Committee, and as chair for the Faculty Awards and Adjunct Faculty Awards ceremonies.

Kassie Scott, from Bemidji, Minn., received a bachelor of science degree from Bemidji State University before attending the University of Minnesota where she earned a master of dental therapy degree in December 2015. Kassie was president of her dental therapy class (2013-2015) and was a member of the Council of Students. She enjoys traveling, snow and water sports, and is an active volunteer with Minnesota Mission of Mercy. Ms. Scott currently practices in the metro area.

Jeremy S. Berger was raised in Worthington, Minn., and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in biology from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. Following graduation, he moved to St. Paul, Minn., where he worked for Upsher Smith Laboratories as a pharmaceutical chemist before pursuing a doctor of dental surgery degree at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Jeremy served as president of the doctor of dental surgery class of 2016 for three years and, this past year, as president of the School of Dentistry Council of Students. Upon graduation, Dr. Berger plans to enter private practice in Minnesota.

Oath for New Dentists

In the tradition of Hippocrates and the men and women through the ages who have dedicated

their lives to the art and science of medicine and dentistry I make the following pledge:

The respect and dignity of patients and the confidential nature of our relationship are

foremost in my service to them.

I acknowledge my limitations and need for continued education. I will seek the knowledge

and inspiration of my colleagues, friends, and patients.

My work shall be dedicated to improving the quality of life for those who seek my

assistance. I will honor the wishes and needs of the patient and will always communicate

treatment plans in the best interests of the patient. I will do no harm.

I will strive always to improve the practice of dentistry, to provide a level of care that

is ethical, moral, and just. I expect the same standards from my colleagues and will not

tolerate their indifference, greed, or unethical behavior.

My profession is an honored one. I will not violate the trust society has placed in me by

allowing race, religion, sexual orientation, gender or social standing to affect my judgement

or ability to take care of patients. I will be humble.

I will consider the tools of my profession to be knowledge, skill, compassion, and patience.

I will share these tools freely with my colleagues and patients alike.

I shall do my utmost to provide the vulnerable members of society the care and attention

they need to assure their health, dignity, and protection. I see all human life as sacred.

In the presence of my teachers, my family, and my friends I make these promises solemnly

and freely. With this oath I willingly assume the rewards and responsibilities of a dentist.

Written by Timothy Schacker, MD, University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1986; revised 1999.

Adapted for dentists by the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Class of2013.

Academic Regalia The academic ensemble for graduation consists of a gown, separate hood and either a mortarboard cap or tam with tassel. The color of each piece and length and design of the hood is related to the respective academic degrees awarded or to be awarded. The official academic color designation for dentistry is lilac and the official colors of the University of Minnesota are maroon and gold.

Bachelor of science degree candidates in dental hygiene are wearing black bachelor degree gowns and waist length black hoods edged in lilac velvet trim with a satin inner lining of maroon and gold. Master degree graduates are wearing black gowns with slightly longer sleeves and hoods. Dental hygiene degree candidates wearing gold tassels have been elected to Sigma Phi Alpha, the National Dental Hygiene Honor Society.

The graduating doctor of dental surgery students are wearing black doctorate degree gowns and full length black hoods edged in a wide band of lilac velvet trim with a satin inner lining of maroon and gold. Candidates wearing the OKU Stole and gold tassel have been elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the National Dental Honor Society.

The faculty and honored guests participating in the graduation ceremony are wearing gowns and hoods indicating their highest degree and caps with tassels.

The Mace Leading our processional today is Dr. Jorge Perdigao, our distinguished Century Club Professor of the Year, bearing the University of Minnesota mace. Originally, maces were iron war clubs, powerful weapons of strength and authority. Today, the meaning is more peaceful; a staff carried before a dignitary as an insignia of dignity and authority.

The University of Minnesota's mace was commissioned in 1961 for the inauguration of President 0. Meridith Wilson and designed by Philip G. Morton, sculptor and associate professor of art. It is made of an aluminum staff and topped by a crystal ball which symbolizes the illuminating quality and the clarity of thinking that characterizes education. The crystal ball is topped by a star representing Minnesota, the North Star State.
