AsapartofCentervilleCity’sWaterSystemVulnerabilityUpdate, theWasatchFaultEarthquakeWaterSystemInitiativeUpgradeconsistsoftwocomponents:

1). SeveralcitywaterlinescrosstheWasatchFault. Fourofthecity’ssixreservoirsarelocatedeastoftheWasatchFault. Manypipesareeitherparalleltoorcrossthefault. Thesewaterlinesaresusceptibletoearthquakedamageandseveralrepresenttheonlysourceofcitywateravailabletocertainneighborhoods. Weproposewiththisinitiativetoinstallmultiplesetsoflinesinatleastthreeareastoallowustopumpwaterinaclosedloop, thusenablingustokeepwateravailabletomorecitizensduringpossiblemanmadeornaturaldisasters. Inordertominimizecosts, weproposetomakesomeoftheseimprovementsinconnectionwithstreetandwater-lineprojectsthatarealreadyplanned.

2). Wealsoproposetoinstalladditionalwater-linevalvesattenlocationsbotheastandwestoftheWasatchFault, enablingustoisolatepotentialwater-mainbreaksandtokeepthewatersystemtightonbothsidesofthefault. Thuswecouldlimitwaterlossand/orinfiltrationofcontaminantsthatmayoccurduetoearthquakedamage. Throughtheuseoffirehydrantsonbothsidesofthefaults, wecouldthenconnectfirehosesacrossbothsidesofthefaultsandkeepwateravailabletoaffectedneighborhoodsuntilpermanentrepairscanbemade. Again, weproposetomakethesechangesinconnectionwithstreetandwater-lineprojectsthatarealreadyplanned. Weproposeotherprojectsnotassociatedwithalready-plannedstreetprojectsastimeandfundspermit, suchasobtainingfirehosetobekeptonhandforemergencypurposes. Com
