St. Paul United Methodist Church began as a mission at the old army hospital on Fair Street for wounded Civil War
Veterans and their families. On Easter Sunday afternoon, April 21, 1867, a group of members from the Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church South (now Trinity United Methodist Church) turned out for a Sunday School service. There was “standing room only”
inside, and the windows of the hospital were opened wide so the crowd gathered outside on the lawn could join in the singing and hear the bible stories.
In 1870, St. Paul Methodist Episcopal South was built on Hunter Street (now MLK, Jr. Drive). The church began with 63 members. After the turn of the century, the congrega-tion had grown so large that they began planning to build a new stone church in the residential neighborhood of Grant Park. Construction of the new church began in 1906. The new church was constructed out of blocks of granite. It was built in the Neo-Romanesque style and included intricate stained glass windows. The large pipe organ was acquired from the Piedmont Cotton States Exhibition in 1887. Interior details include cove ceilings, decorative columns and capitals, paneled woodwork, and original heart pine wood floors.
The first service was held in the new sanctuary in October of 1907 and was attended by more than 1,200 members. By 1921, St. Paul ME had 2,345 members. In the late 1920’s the three-story brick education building was added.
The Grant Park neighborhood thrived in the 1930’s and into the 1940’s, but changed as
a national trend for families to move away from the cities into the suburbs began. Construction of Interstates 20, 75/85, and the stadium claimed more homes and displaced families, cutting Grant Park in half and sending long-time residents to the suburbs.
However the resilient spirit of St. Paul UMC and the neighborhood shined through during these days. “Urban pioneers” began moving into the area, attracted by the unique old homes and historical charm of Grant Park. This diverse, new community fearlessly tackled community issues like crime and education. Soon the neighborhood became the thriving place it is today.
In 1985 a predawn fire razed St. Paul’s building adjacent to the sanctuary. The congregation and community rallied together to rebuild the education and fellowship hall which also housed the Grant Park Learning Center. Reconstruction efforts were completed in 1987. By the early 1990’s, the sanctuary needed renovation. Plaster was falling over the heads of the congrega-tion. Faced with closing the church for good or raising repair funds, the small congrega-tion chose to raise the needed funds to keep the doors of St. Paul UMC open. Repairs began in the spring of 1991 with a new roof, refinishing walls, floors, and pews, and reworking areas of the sanctuary to fit the church’s new space needs for meeting areas.
The lettering frieze around the ceiling perimeter was selected by the congregation and painted by church members. In April of 1994 the work was completed. The congregation resumed worship on Palm Sunday. Ongoing restoration projects to preserve the stained glass windows and repoint the stone facade continue to preserve the beauty and history of St. Paul UMC.
St Paul UMC is now home to the Grant Park Cooperative Preschool and the Golden Age Center. It has served as a temporary sanctuary to Hurricane Katrina evacuees and the Neighborhood Charter School. Many other groups call
St. Paul home including the Atlanta Mennonite Fellowship, The Grant Park Summer Singers and the Four Seasons Chamber Orchestra.

Five Mystical Songs
George Herbert (1593-1633) gained recognition in his lifetime as Orator of Cambridge University and for membership in Parliament, but he is best remembered for the devotional poetry he wrote during the last years of his life while serving the Church of England in the tiny parish of Bemerton, England. He is consid-ered a mystical poet for ability to communicate ab-stract, spiritual insights in simple terms. Herbert played the lute and composed music for some of his poems, though none of his original tunes have survived.
There is a recently installed statue of George Her-bert on one of the outside walls of Salisbury Cathedral in Wiltshire, England. His church in Bemerton, about a mile from the cathedral, is still in use and is a stone’s throw from the school where Vaughan Williams’ father taught when he lived there.
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) is revered as one of the leading composers of the 20th century, with symphonies, choral works, hymns and movies scores among his credits. He is also remembered for his involvement in collecting and recording thousands of English folk songs, some of which he used in larger compositions. He particularly liked the poetry of George Herbert and referred to the texts as practically “setting themselves” to music. Though Vaughan Wil-liams did not share Herbert’s devout faith in God, he did respect him as a member of the clergy who served in the same parish where his father served over two centuries later.
Five Mystical Songs was first performed at the Three Choirs Festival at Worcester on September 14, 1911. The composer conducted, and Campbell Mc-Innes, a popular baritone who Vaughan Williams had in mind while composing the songs, was the soloist.
Program notes by Terri Evans
SoloistKyle Guglielmo, baritone, is currently studying voice performance as a senior at Georgia State University under W. Dwight Coleman. In opera, Kyle has performed the roles of David in A Hand of Bridge, Marco in Gianni Schicchi, Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief , and Sid in Albert Herring: all at Georgia State. Kyle will be seen singing Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors later in the fall, also at Georgia State. Kyle has also performed bass solo from two of Haydn’s masses, and last year had the priviledge of singing the bass solo in Mozart’s Requiem with the Georgia State University Singers and the University Orchestra.
