Water Safety Tip #1

Cold water causes an involuntary gasp reflex-

and it only takes less than ½ cup of water in

your lungs to drown. Dress for the weather,

and always wear your life jacket.

The US Army Corps of Engineers is one of the Nation’s leading providers of

outdoor recreation with over 400 lake and river projects in 43 states and over 370 million visitors per year. Please be careful in and around the water be-cause even strong swimmers drown.

The US Army Corps of Engineers constructed and maintains Center Hill Lake

and Dam. Construction of the dam was authorized through the Flood Control

Act of 1938, and Rivers & Harbors Act of 1946. Construction began in the

late 1930s, but was postponed during World War II. Completion of the pro-

ject was in 1951.

The 64 mile long reservoir serves as a multi-purpose project, and is designed

for flood control, hydropower production, and recreation. Other benefits in-

clude local water supply and natural habitats for native fish and wildlife.

The lake is 64 miles long and has 415 miles of shoreline.

Center Hill Lake is located on the Caney Fork River, a major tributary to the

Cumberland River.

There are a total of 34 recreation areas on the lake. Some of these include:

3 campgrounds

9 commercial marinas

2 state parks

1 state natural resource area

hunting.

Water Safety Tip #12

Trips and falls are involved in 19% of all water-related

fatalities. Be mindful of your footing, wear light

clothes when possible (warm clothes in the winter), and

always wear your life jacket.

Water Safety Tip #3

A non-fastened life jacket does not count! When

wearing a life jacket, make sure it is snuggly fas-

tened. If not fastened, a life jacket will not stay on

when you are thrown from a boat or after a fall.

Water Safety Tip #11

When boating, keep spare clothes

in a dry storage container. Falling

in or flooding waders may lead to

hypothermia, even if you have re-

turned to shore. Having dry

clothes to change into will slow

down the hypothermia process.

Before using your life jacket, make sure to always check:

-The label for size & Coast Guard approval. -For broken parts, mold, & rips.

-The fit by lifting at the shoulder when fastened. It should not slip over the chin and be snug, yet comfortable.

Water Safety Tip #10

Always pay attention. With summer boaters gone, there

may be less lake traffic, but you still need to be cautious of

debris such as logs, sticks up, sand bars, and trash. All of

these may lead to damaged motors and boat hulls.

Don’t depend on your mobile phone as some areas of the

lake may not have cell service. Play it safe and always keep a

two-way radio nearby (being able to call for help immediately

could save lives when things go wrong).

It is always important to make a

float plan before heading to the

lake. When boating, leave a plan

with a reliable person in case you do

not return or check-in as planned. It

should include: your personal infor-

mation, vessel description, and your

departure/arrival times. Overlooking Big Hurricane Creek Taken by: Tom Hutchins September 3, 2016 (Judges’ Choice)

Don’t depend on your ears for trouble. Drowning is often

silent, with little to no splashing to alert anyone of trouble.

Always keep friends, family, and especially children in your

line of sight.

Water Safety Tip #8

Lakes are not swimming pools. What you may think is a

shallow spot may actually be a sandbar or rock. One

step off and you may end up in deep water.

The opposite can also be true, so be aware when jump-

ing in. An area that may appear to have deep water

may have rocks and logs hidden underneath. It is for this

reason that a person should never dive headfirst, even if it is an area you have swam before.

Lakes and rivers typically do not offer lifeguards, so watch children, and never go swimming alone.

Water Safety Tip #7

Be prepared to be out after dark. Boaters may not plan to

be out late, but engine failure, lack of gas, weather, and being

lost are all factors that may keep you out. Always check

your lights, keep a lake or river map nearby, and have a radio

and flare gun in case of an emergency.
