Dear Friends,

When I arrived at IHM in July 2008, I found that the parish did not have a committee to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life. A committee soon formed and has sponsored dinners (Andrew and Martha) to inform young men and women about religious life. The committee also composed a prayer for religious vocations that was placed on the inside cover of our hymnal and could be prayed at Mass or privately for religious vocations.

When Archbishop Schnurr arrived in Cincinnati in 2010, he came for one of our all-school Masses. I mentioned to him that the children and community were accostomed to praying that prayer as we ended the petitions or gave out the Elijah Cup, which focused on religious vocations. Afterward, the Archbishop began promoting a prayer for all vocations, religious, single and married life. We continued to pray our prayer, since we had been doing that prior to the Archbishop’s prayer.

Certainly, we need to pray for all vocations. We need good men and women who will be good mothers and fathers. We also need to pray in a special way for those discerning the possibility of a religious vocation. In the wake of all the issues around the scandal of abuse, and in the continued scarcity of religious vocations, I think it is important to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life now more than ever.

As we pray for Fr. Tony and his return to good health and wellness, let us also pray for our young people to consider the possibility of their being called to priesthood and religious life. Our parish prayer follows:

Vocations Prayer—

Gracious and loving God, guide the men and women of our parish to answer your call. Open our hearts to raise heralds of the Gospel: dedicated and holy priests, deacons, and religious sisters and brothers. Bless those who are now ministering, and grant that many from our own community will be inspired through their example to enter ordained and consecrated life.

We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

God Bless,

Fr. Tom

The Pope’s Monthly IntentionsEach year, the Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father’s request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for this intention each month. In 2018, only one intention is offered per month, whether universal or related to evangelization.

OCTOBER: Evangelization— The Mission of ReligiousThat consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves, and be present among the poor, the marginalized, and those who have no voice.

The cacao for our chocolates comes from the Dominican Republic, Panama, Ecuador and Peru. The sugar comes from Paraguay and the vanilla comes from Madagascar.

Please make a difference by buying Fair Trade coffee, cocoa and chocolate and help plant the seeds of hope while enjoying a delicious product.

IHM’s Second Day at Planned Parenthood is Sat., Nov. 3. This is public prayer—a powerful means of petition, to ask God and Our Lady for an end of abortion.

Please use Sign-up Genius https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b49a4a923a0fa7-40days or sign up for an hour on the easel at the back of church.

Project Rachel Project Rachel is a ministry of the Catholic Church offered to those who have been involved in abortion regardless of their religious affiliation. The name “Project Rachel” was inspired by Scripture; “Rachel mourns her children, she refuses to be consoled because her children are no more,” (Jeremiah 31:15). Founded nationally in 1984 and in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in 1994, the ministry currently operates in 150 dioceses in the USA. The ministry was developed through the collaboration of clergy, laypeople, psychologists, counselors and post-abortive women to provide a team response of care for those suffering in the aftermath of abortion.

Anonymity is a requisite for many post-abortive women, something Project Rachel recognizes. The ministry tries to share its hotline (513.784.0531), email [email protected]. Next Retreat is October 19–21.

You can register online at www.catholiccincinnati.org/project-rachel. Be sure to choose the retreat form the drop-down menu.

The Sacrament of Confirmation: What It Means and Why It Is Still RelevantBaptism, First Communion and Confirmation are the three sacraments of initiation. Baptism and First Communion are celebrated with big family parties and gifts. We pick Godparents that we think will assist us in raising our children in the faith. But, what about Confirmation? Through this sacrament the baptized continue their path of Christian initiation. They are enriched with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and are more closely linked to the Church. They are made strong and more firmly obliged by word and deed to witness to Christ and to spread and defend the faith.

Summer days are winding down and life is changing to fall routines. In some households, life gets busier with back to school and extra-curricular schedule juggling, which can stress even the most proficient masters of organization. This time of transition, from summer to fall, can be a challenge for all of us. Here are some autumn wellness tips to help keep your physical and mental health needs in check.

1. Get your flu shot No one wants to be in bed with the flu. The best way

to prevent it is to get a flu shot. According to the CDC, getting a flu vaccine each season is the single best way to prevent the flu. Outbreaks can happen as early as October, so get vaccinated as soon as possible. And in case you’re not sure...you cannot get the flu from a flu shot.

2. Boost your immune system...look at what you eat and drink

Staying hydrated can help your body eliminate toxins and waste materials, making your immune system better able to fight infection. We have probably all heard we should drink 8 glasses of water a day to maintain hydration. Some studies now suggest even more; about 15.5 cups per day for men and 11.5 cups per day for women. Eating healthy foods can also boost your immune system, especially citrus fruits, red bell peppers (these have twice the amount of vitamin C as citrus), broccoli, garlic, ginger, spinach, yogurt and almonds to name a few.

3. Wash your hands, wash your hands Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps

we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and water.

4. Don’t be a couch potato Autumn means football season and the returns of all our

favorite TV shows. Limit your TV watching to two hours a day. Kill two birds with one stone by doing exercises during commercials, or watch TV while you run on the treadmill. Physical exercise not only benefits your health but it can improve your mood and help you sleep better at night.

5. Relax After a lazy summer, the new stressors of fall can be a

jolt to your system. Letting the stress pile up can affect your immune system. So try to relax, get plenty of sleep, meditate and consider getting regular massages. Attend church or get together with friends to take care of your spiritual and mental health.

All Good and Holy God—Father, Son and Holy Spirit —we beg your divine protection upon the church

as she endures these terrible clerical scandals. Unlike the majority of good and holy priests, who sacrificially devote their lives to the service of the

Church, there have dwelt among us some false shepherds who have deeply wounded your flock. These “weeds among the wheat” have wantonly

broken faith with you and have forsaken their vows to chastely serve the people of God. Many of those given authority to govern your Church have turned a blind eye to these unimaginable atrocities, thus giving further scandal by enabling these horrific

sins. We beg you O Lord for a just resolution to each and every crime committed against your flock, and that by a life of prayer and penance those who are

guilty of such things may find true contrition.

We place the Church under the unwavering protection of the Ever-Virgin Mary and St. Joseph,

her most chaste spouse. By their loving care for your children, may the Church undergo a profound renewal of purity and awaken true devotion among

the people of God. Bless and uphold all faithful clergy and consecrated religious, that they may

grow in holiness and not abandon the vocations you have called them to. May we all sincerely commit our lives more deeply to a fervent practice of our

Catholic Faith, that by doing so we may make reparation for all those who have so grievously

offended and betrayed you. Amen.

striving to live and share the Good News and grow in discipleship with the Lord. 13

Join us for our “Fall Series for Growing in Faith!” starting with dinner at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria followed by a program in Heritage Hall that will end at 8 p.m. The cost for each evening is a good will donation to cover the cost of food.

1. Thursday, October 11th—Growing in Faith Through Prayer After dinner, Donna Wenstrup will guide you in a prayer experience based on

Lectio Divina: a wonderful way to hear God’s still small voice talking to you in your life circumstances right now! When shared together as a family, it allows you to hear how your children are responding to God’s love! After this evening, you will have a template for encountering Christ through Lectio prayer that can be used for any scripture passage!

2. Wednesday, October 24th—Growing in Faith Through Discernment After dinner, Deacon Mike Cassani will lead teens and adults in a discussion on

discernment—the only truly effective process to make significant, life-impacting decisions. Children ages 6–12 will meet with Nicolette Chmiel in a classroom, so they can also learn how to make good choices. This evening will give you an understanding of the process to make these life decisions wisely.

3. Tuesday, November 27th—Growing in Faith During Advent Grab dinner and relax with a Family Movie Night watching The Star! This will

get us in the mood for Advent, and you may take home Advent Booklets for children. Advent Wreath kits will be available for sale for $10. Please indicate on registration that you would like one, so we know how many to order. Advent Wreath orders are due November 13.

Register online @ ihom.weshareonline.org

For children age 1 and walking up to age 5, we will offer babysitting. Please register a few days ahead of time by going to https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c044ea9a622ab9-childcare5
