Dear Friends,

As the JCCNV begins a new Fiscal Year, it is a time of both reflection and anticipation. Looking at the past 12 months, we are proud to say that the Center remains fiscally sound and that our core programs continue to thrive. To help the Center serve more families beyond its walls, we hired two new staff members in our Community Engagement Department and increased the number of programs both east and west of the Center.

At present, we are both celebrating milestones in our service to the JCCNV. With the completion of the first three years of Jeff ’s tenure as Executive Director, and the conclusion of the initial employment contract, we are happy to report that the Board has invited Jeff to continue for an additional five years, and Jeff has happily accepted. Connie is now halfway through her two-year term as JCCNV President, and in addition to presiding over a very successful fiscal year, she has set her sights beyond today and helped to position the JCCNV and our community for a healthy and prosperous future. We have been working closely with the Board and staff to emphasize both the strategic plan and its future implementation, which will set the future course for our renovation and revitalization.

We have learned a great deal over the past nine months from the Strategic Planning process and look forward to sharing those insights with you. While much of the detail is still in development, we can tell you that we are committed to engaging the rapidly expanding and diverse Jewish community of Northern Virginia, which reaches well beyond the walls (and a reasonable driving distance) of our JCC here in Fairfax. And, though we look to the north, south, east and west, we know that there is important work to be done right here at home.

To that end, we have begun making much needed improvements including new flooring in the fitness room and linear workout area. In the fall, we will begin construction on a more welcoming and functional lobby, expanded restrooms on the main level, and reconfiguring some of the offices. While we know that the renovations have been inconvenient at times (and there is more work to come), we hope that you will agree that it will be well worth the trouble. The initial renovations are a start, but we have much more work to do in our facility to be able to accommodate our growing programs and maintain the level of excellence that our members and guests demand and deserve.

So stay tuned as we continue down this exciting path. We will need your patience, participation and patronage to successfully renovate our Jewish Community Center and make engagement in our widespread Jewish community more accessible to all.

Thank you for choosing to be part of our family, and for your enthusiastic support.

B’shalom,

Connie Pesachowitz Jeff Dannick President Executive Director

In addition to working as a volunteer EMT for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department for the past four years, Kelsey has also taught preschool, worked in Human Resources, and was an Office Manager.

Jennifer DeAngelis As the Center’s Growing Jewish Families Program continues to broaden its reach to serve even more areas throughout Northern Virginia, we recently welcomed Jennifer DeAngelis, as our second Community Engagement Coordinator. Jennifer is mother to three young boys ranging in age from 3 to 8-years-old. And the Award Goes To…This past winter, our Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Department was honored to have won two of the 2014 JCCs of North America Biennial Excellence Awards.

Recognized for its truly outstanding, visionary initiatives with maximum impact or potential for change, we are pleased to announce that our Wellness Initiative for Active Adults/Seniors was awarded the Zahav Award.

Our G.I.R.L.S. (Giving back, Independence, Ruach (spirit), Leadership, Strength) Wellness Program, which was piloted in the spring of 2013, was the winner of the Kol Ha Kavod Award, which recognizes exemplary initiatives that can be replicated by other JCCs.

Please join us as we congratulate our Sports, Fitness, and Aquatics staff for their extraordinary creativity as JCC Professionals and for their commitment to inspiring our community and other JCCs to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Dance Academy Company Wins Big!On Sunday, March 30, our Dance Academy Company performed their piece “High Tide” at the regional championship, Elite Performance Challenge, held in Woodbridge, VA.

A hush fell over the crowd, and jaws dropped as the students made their splashing entrance on the down beat of the music. As a company, they demonstrated a refined, dignified, and cohesive performance, captivating the audience and adjudication committee. Each individual was radiant on stage with a confident, happy presence, that only hard work, enduring patience, and dedication to their craft can achieve. When the music faded and their dance rippled to an end, the audience roared their approval.

Out of 250 competitive entries, our company was proud and honored to receive the Overall High Score award.

Please join us as we wish our Dance Academy Company a well-deserved, Mazel Tov, and don’t miss your chance to see an encore of their award winning performance at their recital on June 8.

Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, the JCCNV is able to provide quality programs, activities and services to a diverse and growing community. Below, we highlight one service that could not exist without the financial support of our community.

Summer at the JCC of Northern Virginia means it’s time for camp! Since 1972, school-aged children have been enjoying traditional summer camp experiences at the Center, such as swimming, field trips, exiting activities, and lots of ruach (spirit)!

Camp is a place to learn, grow and have fun, and here at the J, we support the inclusion of all children in camp. Inclusive activities help educate typically developing children and their parents on how to be supportive and welcoming to individuals with special needs while giving children with different needs the opportunity to live life to their fullest. For a child who requires that extra bit of support, the JCCNV Special Needs Department will arrange for a trained “shadow” to assist the child throughout their camp day, helping to improve the camper’s ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with his/her peers within a relaxed, fun and creative environment.

Unfortunately, many families who require shadow services for their campers are not able to bear the full cost of those services, which is $400 per week. Thanks to the generous support of our community, we are able to provide scholarship money to families in need, helping to offset the cost of an enjoyable and meaningful summer camp experience for a child who might not otherwise be able to participate. Please help us continue to offer these supportive, shadow services with your contribution to the JCCNV. Contact [email protected], or call (703) 537-3033 to make your donation today.

What is your favorite aspect of the JCCNV and why?My favorite aspect of the JCCNV is the variety of outstanding programs for seniors. Specially designed exercise programs, interesting field trips, stimulating courses and lectures, meaningful Jewish holiday celebrations, small group games and delightful cultural entertainment all provide reasons to be at “The J” daily. Creating all of these experiences are the organized, caring, cheerful JCCNV staff members giving seniors a warm welcome. Moving from another state to this area a few years ago, my husband and I joined the JCCNV. What a great decision that was! Discovering new friends has been a highlight of belonging, all tied in to the senior programs. For me, the JCCNV is truly a mind, body, and spirit center.

Why is volunteering at the JCCNV important to you?To me, volunteering at the JCCNV is a win-win experience. It’s my way of giving service to a special place. The benefits I derive from the JCCNV impel me to lend a hand where it is fitting, helping others while doing what I enjoy. For example, as a retired elementary teacher, books are central to my life. Sorting and selling used books raises funds for the JCCNV and puts wonderful reading materials out there for people to enjoy. It’s great recycling! Through this volunteer activity I’ve met interesting people and been exposed to fascinating books. In another service to the JCCNV, I’m part of a creative team designing Adult Learning Institute courses. ALI has added a special educational dimension to the JCCNV’s offerings. And sharing ideas with the planning group stirs my mind. Now, I look forward to my next interesting volunteer opportunity.

Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia

Your Complete Mind, Body and Spirit Center.

Thanks in great part to our members, foundations, corporate sponsors and friends, the Center continues fulfilling its commitment to this community to provide a comfortable atmosphere rich in Jewish family traditions. We encourage you to think about the Center when making your charitable-giving plans.

Become a Member of theTrustee Circle or Chai SocietyDues and program fees cover less than 80% of the JCCNV’s annual operating expenses. We depend on the generous philanthropy of individuals, corporations and foundations to ensure our financial sustainability. Donating more than two-thirds of the funds raised throughout the year, Trustee Circle and Chai Society members are the cornerstone of the Center’s ability to build a strong community based on Jewish values.

The Trustee Circle: Donors in the Trustee Circle donate a minimum cash gift of $3,000 or more annually. This special visionary group of leaders understands the importance of the JCCNV to our Jewish community and the fact that none of our extraordinary programs would be possible without a financially sound operation.

Chai Society: By joining the Chai Society, members are demonstrating their understanding that the life of the JCCNV depends on our ability to financially support our general operations in addition to programmatic support. The Chai Society is made up of a special group of donors who give at least $1,800 to our General Operating Fund, allowing us to utilize the funds to best meet the needs of the Center. To augment their general operating support, many members of the Chai Society choose to contribute supplementary dollars to the programs about which they are most passionate. Chai Society members are also named as Trustee Circle members when their contributions equal or exceed $3,000 annually.

To learn more about our donor societies, contact Jeff Dannick, JCCNV Executive Director, at (703) 537-3023 or [email protected]. To learn more about other giving opportunities, please contact Michelle Pearlstein, Development Coordinator, at (703) 537-3033, or [email protected].

Give CashCash gifts allow the Center to use funds where they are most urgently needed. You may also designate your gift for a specific purpose, or make it in honor or memory of a person or an occasion through the tribute program. A special card will be sent to recognize your tribute gift.

Mitzvah Cards/Retail ScripThe JCCNV receives a percentage of every dollar that you spend at Giant, Safeway and Shoppers Food Warehouse, along with many other retail stores. When you enroll in the monthly grocery scrip program, we will order your card (minimum $100) at the store of your choice and send it to you with an invoice each month.

By enrolling in the monthly program, you can add cards from hundreds of participating stores to your order at any time on a month-to-month basis. Orders are placed on the 15th of each month and arrive within four business days. Visit www.shopwithscrip.com and then go to the shop to see a full listingof stores.

One-time orders are also accepted. Contact [email protected], or call (703) 537-3060 or submit the order form, available online at www.jccnv.org and in the lobby.

Donate a Used CarDonate now and help the JCCNV accomplish its mission. Your donation is tax-deductible. Free towing wherever the car is — as is. You can download the car donation form on our website or request one from our reception desk.

Find out if your Employerhas a Matching-Gift ProgramIn many cases, your cash contribution becomes twice as valuable. It’s usually quick and easy; just complete your company’s form and your gift to the Center will be matched. (Sample companies that match are Exxon-Mobil and IBM.)

Give through the Combined FederalCampaign or United WayThe JCCNV is a participant in the United Way and Combined Federal Campaign annual campaigns. When you make your United Way/CFC gift through your employer, please designate the JCCNV: United Way #8437 / CFC #8198.

Transfer Appreciated AssetsStocks or other investments that have been held for more than one year and have grown in value can provide a substantial gift to the Center at a low net cost to you. The full value of your appreciated asset is tax-deductible and you can avoid paying tax on the gains.

Give Insurance/IRAs/Retirement FundsIf you no longer need a life insurance policy, IRA or other retirement fund, consider giving it to the Center. Even if you are still paying premiums on an insurance policy, it can be given to the Center; you may take an income-tax deduction when the Center is named owner and beneficiary. Alternately, you may choose to set up a new life insurance policy naming the JCC of Northern Virginia as beneficiary, ensuring support for the Center in the future.

Establish an Endowment FundBy establishing an endowment fund at the JCCNV, you will be assured that the programs and services you most care about will endure. You may name the endowment fund and designate which area of the Center will benefit. Once the endowment fund reaches a minimum of $10,000, the fund will be formally established.

Make a BequestCreate a legacy for your community by naming the JCCNV as a beneficiary in your will or insurance policy.

Volunteer through the JCCNV Volunteer CorpsIf you have the time or expertise to lend a hand for the JCCNV, your help is needed and would be much appreciated! Visit www.jccnv.org or contact [email protected], or (703) 537-3060.

Giving to the Center helps bring Jewish values to life.

Growing Jewish Families cultivates community by connecting a large network of families raising Jewish children in Northern Virginia by sponsoring play dates and community events, neighborhood groups, and by maintaining social networking groups on Yahoo and Facebook — all to help you connect, and stay connected, with families in your area. As a part of this network, you will have access to educational and social opportunities in your own backyard. You will receive regular e-newsletters chock full of educational information and links, announcements of upcoming local children’s programs, family events, and more.

Growing Jewish Families continues to broaden its reach to serve even more areas throughout Northern Virginia. With the addition of a second Community Engagement Coordinator (welcome, Jennifer DeAngelis!), programming sites have now extended further into Western Fairfax County to include the areas of Reston, Sterling, Herndon, Chantilly, Centreville, Gainesville, Manassas, and Leesburg.

Maybe your family has recently grown, or your friends are just about to welcome a little one into their lives. Shalom Baby welcomes parents, their newborns and newly adopted children into the Northern Virginia Jewish community and invites families to our free, monthly Shalom Baby play dates. This is a wonderful way for you to meet new people, make new friends and learn about your Jewish community and resources available to you. Please contact Jennifer Kanarek or Jennifer DeAngelis to register. For additional resources visit: http://jconnect.org/resources/new-baby-information. Israel is a fascinating contrast between the ancient and the modern and is the spiritual and physical center of the Jewish people. As we celebrate its rich history, traditions and deep dimension, we are thrilled to work with our Community Shaliach, who will help us explore and discover what makes Israel so special! Our Shaliach will reach deeper within our community to educate and increase awareness, knowledge and pride about Israel’s history, culture, and current events, and to promote a better understanding of Israel and its ideals. The program also serves as a catalyst for igniting Jewish journeys, encouraging people to learn more about Judaism and Israel, and finding their own way to connect to the Jewish homeland.

Fine Arts ProgramFine Arts CoordinatorIrene Gavin, (703) 537-3063 • [email protected]

The JCCNV Fine Arts Program supports and encourages the development of Jewish arts and artists. The program is also committed to establishing and strengthening the relationship between the Northern Virginia community and Israel by integrating Israeli arts into its program.

The JCCNV Fine Arts Program’s dedication to the arts has garnered an international reputation that is well-respected amongst artists, art enthusiasts, buyers, and sellers. Over the years, the Center’s Bodzin Art Gallery exhibitions have attracted talented artists who work in a wide-variety of media including painting, photography, jewelry, crafts and new media.

For a listing of past exhibits, visit our Fine Arts Archive at www.jccnvarts.org.

ExhibitsThe Bodzin Art Gallery continues to feature many local artists, supporting the creative talent in our tri-state area.

Celebrating our Children’s Creativity May 27–June 15The JCCNV Early Childhood Services department presents, “A Reggio Exhibit,” which showcases the special philosophy of teaching art being used by the program. Beginning in Reggio, Italy after WWII, and based on the ideas that children have a say in the direction of their learning, children use all their senses, relating to each other and the exploration of materials, and are encouraged with endless ways of expressing themselves. A large part of the philosophy centers on the use of art and materials.

The Early Childhood Learning Center’s (ECLC) annual exhibit of children’s work from the 2013–2014 school year focuses on long-term topic studies from classes ranging from infants to four-year-olds, showcasing the projects that come out of the atelier (workshop). The ECLC’s modernized “Atelier Method” is a variant of fine art instruction

taking place in an inviting art room that provides a wonderful place for children to explore their creative side under the guidance of our professional artist, Sarah D. Samuels Vejvoda, Atelierista.

Summer SpotlightAnnual Open Exhibition with JCCNV Members and StaffJune 17–August 19The arts are an integral part of life here at the Center. Our annual open exhibition spotlights the many talents of our own creative community; members and staff are invited to display their artwork in the Bodzin Gallery. Whatever your medium — drawings, oils, watercolor, fiber arts, ceramics, beads, etc. — we’d love to put it on display! Directory of Jewish Artists and ArtLooking to buy a piece of Jewish art to add to your collection? Or are you an artist looking to sell your fine art pieces? The JCCNV maintains a directory of Jewish artists and art that brings together buyers and sellers of all media.

Visit our directory at www.jccnvarts.org. For works from photography to glass sculptures, still life paintings to hand-crafted wood pieces, and decorative rugs to pottery. You’re sure to find something in our directory that’ll satisfy your fine art needs.

Our Philosophy of LearningThe Early Childhood Learning Center strives to help each child grow as an individual. We emphasize the development of self-confidence and a positive self-image. Our activities provide experiences to foster social skills and emotional maturity and to strengthen cognitive and physical growth. Play is a child’s work. Play provides the opportunity for children to explore their world, find out how to get along with others, strengthen their muscles, try new activities, build self-confidence and enhance self-esteem. Play is how the young child develops the necessary skills and social competencies that will be needed as he/she grows and matures.

The primary goal of our Infant/Toddler Program is to provide each child with the best of care in a clean and nurturing environment. Our staff works to encourage each child in every stage of his or her social and emotional growth, as well as to support and strengthen language and cognitive development. The daily routine is set up to provide stimulating experiences for children to learn and explore their environment through their own curiosity.

Our teaching philosophy follows a Reggio-Emilia inspired philosophy that is based on the following ideas:• Children have a say over the direction of

their learning• Children are able to learn through

experiences of touching, moving, listening, seeing, and hearing

• Children have a relationship with other children and material items to explore

• Children have endless ways and opportunities to express themselves

Our philosophy involves an emergent curriculum that builds on the interests of the children. Topics of study are chosen through discussion/observations of children, community or family events, interests of the children, and teacher-directed provocations. The curriculum provides hands-on learning experiences, areas for children to experiment with the natural world, and real-life problem-solving with opportunities for creative thinking.

New! JCCA Sheva Early Learning FrameworkThe JCCNV ECLC is participating in the JCCA Sheva Early Learning Framework. This framework is a basis for the continued education of the children in the ECLC. It builds upon the foundations already in place through the Reggio Emilia inspired philosophy. Core principles include: • The value of children as constructivist

learners including the concept of kavod (respect) for each child’s ability to think for himself/herself

• Early childhood directors as visionaries — our professional staff has the chochma (wisdom) to make sound decisions for their population

• The importance of early childhood educators as professionals — through learning communities and attending conferences and workshops, our educators develop ahavat limud (a love of learning) for themselves and their students

• A focus on families as engaged partners — opportunities are provided throughout the year to build kehillah (community) between our families and staff

• The concept of the environment as inspiration for inquiry — spaces are intentionally designed to encourage curiosity, intellectual engagement, and creativity

• Emphasis on the Jewish value of sh’mirat ha’guf (taking care of our bodies) through nutrition and exercise

• Further learning about Israel to educate our students and their families about the story of the Jewish people

Kadima is a recreational, social skills therapy camp, led by a school psychologist, for children with Level 1 Autism (formerly known as Asperger’s), ADD/ADHD, and related disorders. Kadima means “forward” or “let’s go!” which is meaningful because the goal of camp is to provide positive experiences for children to absorb life skills and to move forward in making individual progress. Kadima’s mission is to improve social and emotional skills in a safe and nurturing environment. The camp is designed to provide opportunities to build self-esteem, social competence, independence, and self-awareness, as well as foster positive friendships. Campers learn and grow dynamically. Kadima is designed for social success in an inclusive environment. Parents have the opportunity to attend weekly meetings designed to provide feedback regarding their children, ask questions, and build camaraderie with the other camp families.

The camp day includes social skills therapy in conjunction with activities such as swim, sports, arts and crafts, and music.

School’s Out – It’s Fun And Relaxation Mode For Kids!Paula Cole, SFA Director

This summer, gather your family and head to the great outdoors for some family fitness fun! From rock climbing, hiking, biking, and camping, to outdoor concerts, movies, and farmers markets, there are plenty of summer activities that are sure to keep you and your family happy and healthy.

Summer Sports Programs are a great way for kids to make new friends, socialize, and get a good workout, all at the same time. Kids’ sports can be organized into formal leagues, loose pick-up games, scheduled classes, or even neighborhood gatherings. Let the children decide which sports they want to play, and in what surroundings, but remember — it is extremely important that they are first taught proper techniques and safety precautions before starting their new sport.

Enjoying the Outdoors. Take hikes through nature trails to discover local wildlife; swim in pools or nearby lakes, rivers or the ocean; bike to new neighborhoods; and host slip and slide sprinkler parties to get moving. Being outdoors not only provides kids the exercise they need to stay healthy, but also introduces them to exciting new environments to learn about and explore.

At Home. During the summer, some children find it difficult to resist the urge to plop down on the couch and watch television, surf the web, or play video games all day. If possible, take the temptation out of the house or suggest that these sedentary activities be done after their daily physical activities. Keep the physical activity fun and have your children come up with their own weekly exercise schedule that you help them with.

Some activities that will keep the whole family moving while burning calories are:

Rock Climbing. The LIVESTRONG Foundation says that rock climbing is a lot like solving a puzzle, giving your brain a mental workout as you figure out the best way to reach the top. Depending on your weight, climbing a rock wall will burn between 660–976 calories per hour.

Playing in the Sand. Building a sand castle can burn 100 calories per hour, but — if you build the castle further away from water, you can burn between two and three times more calories!

Hula Hooping is a really fun way to burn calories and have fun with your family at the same time. You don’t have to be a kid to do this work out. Newer hula hoops are made to weigh more, making them easier to twirl.

Biking on the sand can burn between 380–760 calories per hour, depending on your weight and speed. According to LIVESTRONG, an individual weighing 130lbs will burn around 175 calories after 45 minutes of biking at a leisurely pace on the street.

Tennis. You can burn up to 544 calories per hour playing a singles tennis match. For women, playing a doubles tennis match can burn 289 calories for a 30-year old, or 269 calories for a 50-year old.

Make Water Safety Your Priority • Swim in designated areas supervised by

lifeguards.• Always swim with a buddy; do not allow

anyone to swim alone. Even at a public pool or a lifeguarded beach, use the buddy system!

• Ensure that everyone in the family learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate water orientation and Learn-to-Swim courses.

• Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

• Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.

• Establish rules for your family and enforce them without fail. For example, set limits based on each person’s ability, do not let anyone play around drains and suction fittings, and do not allow swimmers to hyperventilate before swimming under water or have breath-holding contests.

• Even if you do not plan on swimming, be cautious around natural bodies of water including ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes. Cold temperatures, currents and underwater hazards can make a fall into these bodies of water dangerous.

• If you go boating, wear a life jacket! Most boating fatalities occur from drowning.

• Avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination; affects swimming and diving skills; and reduces the body’s ability to stay warm.

Prevent Unsupervised Access to the Water • Install and use barriers around your home

pool or hot tub. Safety covers and pool alarms should be added as additional layers of protection.

• Ensure that pool barriers enclose the entire pool area and are at least 4-feet high with gates that are self-closing, self-latching and open outward and away from the pool. The latch should be high enough to be out of a small child’s reach.

• If you have an above-ground or inflatable pool, remove access ladders and secure the safety cover whenever the pool is not in use.

• Remove any structures that provide access to the pool, such as outdoor furniture, climbable trees, decorative walls and playground equipment.

• Keep toys that are not in use away from

the pool and out of sight. Toys can attract young children to the pool.

Maintain Constant Supervision • Actively supervise kids whenever around

the water — even if lifeguards are present. Do not just drop your kids off at the public pool or leave them at the beach — designate a responsible adult to supervise.

• Always stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions when supervising children around water.

Know What to Do in an Emergency • If a child is missing, check the water first.

Seconds count in preventing death or disability.

• Know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.

• If you own a home pool or hot tub, have appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit.

CommunicationsIf you are interested in receiving pool schedule updates, closings, etc., please contact Teo Albu.

SAVE THE DATE Fall 2014 Adults 55+ Kick-Off Event“No Place on Earth” Documentary with pre-film presentation by Cave Explorer, Chris NicolaThursday, September 18, noon–2:45pmNoon: Lunch (bring dairy or parve/meatless), special dessert buffet provided12:45pm: Program Contact: [email protected], or (703) 537-3095Mr. Nicola is a cave explorer who came across artifacts of daily living in a system of caves in Ukraine. His presentation here at the JCCNV will describe this caving experience; his book, The Secret of Priest’s Grotto; and his involvement in the making of the documentary, “No Place On Earth.” This unbelievable film describes how in 1942, five Jewish families in Ukraine — 38 men, women and children — descended into caves to hide from pursuing Nazis and lived in near-total darkness for 500 days. It wasn’t until 1993, when Chris Nicola was mapping out the largest cave system in Ukraine, that evidence was first discovered of this amazing story, the longest uninterrupted underground survival ever recorded. This harrowing story of families living in near-total darkness in two cold, damp caves was captured in this 2013 documentary by filmmaker Janet Tobias. The film also features interviews with survivors and their descendants, now living mainly in New York City and Montreal, and includes a segment in which the director brings some of the survivors, the oldest of whom is in his 90s, back into the caves.

Don’t miss this unbelievable story of courage and perseverance told by Mr. Nicola along with this very special documentary film. Fee: $8 /$5 member (includes dessert buffet, coffee and tea) Code: #5176RSVP: We need to know the number of participants for planning purposes, so RSVP is a must! Madama Butterfly at the 2014 Castleton Festival Sunday, July 20, depart JCCNV 10:15amreturn 6:45pmContact: [email protected], or (703) 537-3095 The Castleton Festival, launched in the summer of 2009, is a place where the future meets the present — the future stars of the opera and concert worlds are nurtured by its present stars, including the world-renowned Lorin Maazel. The festival has become one of the world’s fastest growing international music festivals and training grounds for young artists — more than 3,000 young people have been touched by the festival.

Madama Butterfly is “set in Japan at the start of the 20th century, and tells the tale of Lieutenant Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton of the United States Navy and 15-year-old Cio-Cio-San, a former geisha nicknamed “Madam Butterfly.”

“Pinkerton proposes to her but tells colleagues that he is simply touring the world in search of pleasure. He marries Cio-Cio-San, but to him it is a marriage of convenience. The innocent young woman believes that her marriage is real

The National Museum of American HistoryView Key’s “Star-Spangled Banner” Original Manuscript and Other New ExhibitsWednesday, June 18, depart JCCNV 10:30am; return 3:15pmContact: [email protected], or (703) 537-3095Spend several hours “on your own” exploring this wonderful museum. There is a café in which to sit, relax and eat. Consider viewing the following new exhibits:• Key’s “Star-Spangled Banner” Original

Manuscript. To mark the bicentennial of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” the Maryland Historical Society will loan Francis Scott Key’s original manuscript of the “Star-Spangled Banner” lyrics to the museum for a special short-term display, reuniting it with the flag he saw at “dawn’s early light.”

• Making a Modern Museum: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the National Museum of American History. This exhibition will document the origins of the National Museum of American History (originally the Museum of History and Technology from 1964-80) and consider what those beginnings mean for the museum today and into the future.

• The Early Sixties: American Science. When the museum opened, the goal of improving science and technology engaged many Americans. Fear of nuclear attack by the Soviet Union, fascination with outer space, and the hope of training a new generation of scientists encouraged Smithsonian historians to stress the importance of science in world culture.

• The Early Sixties: American Culture. This display celebrates the early ’60s as the background for the opening of the museum. That period of American culture straddled a time of dominant traditions and social norms with developing broad-based countercultural and reactionary expressions in response to demands for individual and community freedoms in areas of arts economics, politics and environmental and civil rights issues.

Tours of the Jewish Museum of Maryland and Ladew Topiary Gardens Thursday, June 26, depart JCCNV 9:15am; return 6:45pmContact: [email protected], or (703) 537-3095 Join us on a tour of The Jewish Museum of Maryland, a museum of regional Jewish history, culture and community, located in downtown Baltimore. We’ll uncover the roots of Jewish history in a guided tour of the museum’s landmark historic sites — the Lloyd Street Synagogue, built in 1845, now the nation’s third oldest surviving synagogue and B’nai Israel Synagogue, built in 1876 and still home to a vibrant congregation.

Also, on view in the exhibition gallery, will be Project Mah Jongg. This exhibit explores the traditions, history, and meaning of the game of mah jongg in Jewish-American culture with memories shared by women who gather together to play the Chinese game that became a Jewish-American tradition.

After a lovely lunch in the Ladew Café (included in the trip fee), we will have a guided garden tour at Ladew Topiary.

Harvey S. Ladew (1887–1976) was a traveler, artist, foxhunter and creator of an extraordinary garden. Born into privilege in New York City, Harvey Ladew was treated to boyhood drawing lessons from curators at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1929, Harvey Ladew purchased the 200+ acre Pleasant Valley Farm in rural Maryland. During the 1930s Ladew added wings to the original house and renovated outbuildings before beginning work on the gardens. Then, with the help of local farmers, he carved 22 acres of gardens out of fields previously used for crops and livestock and set to work transforming the farm into what the Garden Club of America describes as “the most outstanding topiary garden in America.”

Late in life, Ladew determined to find a way of preserving his creation for all to enjoy.

The result is Ladew Topiary Gardens, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is “to maintain and promote the gardens, house and facilities in keeping with the creative spirit of Harvey S. Ladew for the public benefit and for educational, scientific and cultural pursuits.” Ladew Topiary Gardens opened to the public in 1971.

Join us on this interesting, varied summer excursion!Fee: $58/ $50 member (includes bus transportation, guided tour at the Jewish Museum, guided garden tour at Ladew Topiary, lunch — choices to be given after registration — in the café at Ladew Topiary)Code: #5179RSVP: Submit payment and registration form to the JCCNV, Attn: Michele Endick. Trip to Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library Thursday, July 10, depart JCCNV 9am; return approx. 7:30pmContact: [email protected], or(703) 537-3095 Join us for a trip via luxury bus to wonderful Winterthur in Delaware!Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library is an estate housing one of the most important collections of Americana in the United States of America. It was the former home of Henry Francis du Pont (1880–1969), a renowned antiques collector and horticulturist. Until recently, it was known as the “Henry Francis duPont Winterthur Museum.”

In the early 20th century, H. F. du Pont and his father, Henry Algernon du Pont, designed Winterthur in the spirit of 18th- and 19th-century European country houses. The younger du Pont added to the home many times thereafter, increasing the number of rooms nearly sixfold.

The Winterthur Library includes more than 87,000 volumes and a huge number of manuscripts and images, mostly related to American history, decorative arts, and architecture. In the 1990s, more informal museum galleries were opened in a new building adjacent to the main house featuring special rotating and permanent exhibits.

Our exciting trip includes: First, we will enjoy lunch in the Garden Café — everyone will receive a prepaid voucher to pick the lunch they desire, including an entrée, drink and dessert!

After lunch, our visit begins with a 25-minute tram tour of the elegant gardens. Winterthur’s 1,000 acres encompass rolling hills, streams, meadows, and forests. Founder Henry Francis du Pont selected the choicest plants from around the world to enhance the natural setting, arranging them in lyrical color combinations and carefully orchestrating a succession of bloom from late January to November.

A one-hour tour of the magnificent house follows the tram tour. The 175 rooms are furnished with his outstanding collection of antiques and objects added since his death.

In the Galleries, you can explore unique displays crafted by Winterthur curators with selections from the Winterthur’s unparalleled collection of nearly 90,000 objects — decorative and fine arts made or used in America from 1630 to 1860. Famous for its American artwork, the collection is amplified with objects from other regions of the world, illustrating the active role America played in the international market.

For Downton Abbey® fans, included in your fee is a timed ticket to the special exhibition Costumes of Downton Abbey®, an original exhibition of exquisite designs from the award-winning television series. Forty historically inspired costumes will be displayed and supplemented by photographs and vignettes inspired by the fictional program and by real life at Winterthur.

On our trip back to Fairfax, we will stop for a relatively quick “on your own” dinner — restaurant TBD.Fee: $84/ $76 member (includes luxury bus, lunch voucher, garden tram tour, house tour and entry to the galleries including the Downton Abbey® exhibit) Dinner is “on your own” on return trip. instrument, The Great Stalacpipe Organ. Completely unique are the beautiful tones created by this one-of-a-kind instrument,” which makes music of concert quality from the surrounding stalactite formations covering more than three acres.”

Our trip includes a one-hour tour of the caverns, self-guided tour of the Car and Carriage Caravan and access to the Luray Valley Museum which displays an overview of the Valley’s history with documents, decorative arts and artifacts. A collection of historic local structures have been carefully transported to the site and are being restored.

The Elk Run Dunkard Church, circa 1825, served as temporary quarters for both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War as attested by the signatures that still scatter the interior. In adjacent areas are the 1835 home of the county’s first Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly and a restoration of the Hamburg Regular School, the area’s first school for African American children. An acquisition from the Smithsonian Institution, a gazebo which depicts Welsh construction, a large threshing barn, a blacksmith’s shop, and a corn crib complete the community. A recreated mining station provides a panning opportunity at The Stonyman Mining Company.

The Car and Carriage Caravan displays milestones in transportation, including authentically restored cars, carriages, coaches and costumes, dating from 1725 to 1941. The centerpiece of the collection is the 1892 Benz, one of the oldest cars in the country still in operating condition.

After our visit at the caverns, we will partake in a fine lunch buffet at the Mimslyn Inn in downtown Luray (included in your trip fee). After lunch we will spend some time at the museums. Film, “Calendar Girls”Wednesday, June 25, 10:30am–noonBased on a true story, eleven middle-aged Englishwomen pose nude for their annual Women’s Institute calendar as a fund-raiser for the local hospital. Chris (Helen Mirren) gets the idea to raise money for the hospital after Annie’s (Julie Walters) husband dies of leukemia. The calendar is a little different in that each woman is posing behind a different task that the Women’s Institute teaches their members, such as making bread rolls, knitting, planting flowers, and playing the piano. Before they know it, the calendar is a big hit in England with tremendous sales. Eventually, they are flown to America to be interviewed by Jay Leno. The calendar has made almost a million dollars for the local hospital. Come join us as we enjoy this wonderful 2003 British comedy.

Who Wants a Corned Beef Sandwich with a Side of Ratner?Wednesday, July 9; depart Beth El at 11am, return approximately 3pm Are you ready for a good, authentic corned beef or pastrami sandwich? If so, then join us for a trip to the newly-opened Attman’s Deli. After getting its start on Baltimore’s Corned Beef Row in 1915, it made a historic move and opened a second location in Potomac in July 2013. The menu at this location offers the same legendary corned beef, pastrami and other deli specialties. And who can resist those half-sour and full-sour pickles!

After lunch, we will take a quick ride over to the Ratner Museum, one of only three museums in the world devoted to portraying biblical characters. The 7,000-square-foot museum features sculptures, paintings, tapestries and children’s books depicting characters and stories of the Hebrew Bible, all in a setting where visitors, especially kids, are encouraged to touch the artwork and read the books, even rare editions. “The

Frances Perkins — A Champion for Social JusticeTuesday, June 24, 10:30am–noonPresented by Mary Lipsey, member of the Fairfax County History Commission, president of the Fairfax County Cemetery Preservation Association, volunteer docent for the National Museum of American History and the National Archives, and former secondary school history teacherFrances Perkins, the first woman in U.S. history to be appointed to a Cabinet-level position, was truly a remarkable person. As Secretary of Labor and throughout her professional career, she tirelessly advocated for the rights of workers and the poor, bringing about pioneering reforms which today we take largely for granted. As FDR’s Secretary of Labor from 1933 to 1945, Frances Perkins was a key force behind the New Deal’s governmental programs in the areas of unemployment relief, minimum wages, maximum hours, abolition of child labor, safety in the workplace, social security, and more. She also was a strong advocate for several changes in immigration policies to allow more Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany to come to the U.S. She achieved these successes at a time when Congress and the federal government were overwhelmingly

There are also study guides for educators dealing with topics such as assimilation, anti-Semitism, Jewish identity, intermarriage, Jewish humor and Jewish love and marriage. These are available, with accompanying videos, free of charge to schools, synagogues and church groups. For more information, contact Pam Wiener at (703) 537-3061 [email protected].

LibraryThe library is partially underwritten by the Lynne Ran and Eleanor Finkelstein Library Fund.

The JCCNV library is located in the adult lounge. Browse through our selection of fiction and nonfiction books with Judaic themes. The library is open to members during building hours, unless the room is in use, and operates on the honor system. To check out a book, fill out a card with your name and phone number and leave it at the front desk. Return the book to the front desk.
