JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA DISCOVER YOUR STORY.JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA

As the incoming President, I am excited to lead the Executive Board at this unique time in the J’s history when we will bring to life Vision 2020 — a strategic plan that sets the course for our future — and that also includes a renewed focus on leadership development. We have so much to be proud of and thankful for. The J’s staff are as skilled and committed as you will find anywhere. Our Board of Directors — the J’s largest incoming “class” in recent memory — is committed to excellence and to serving as ambassadors in the community. Hundreds of volunteers regularly give of their time to further the J’s ability to serve the needs of the community. The building (and parking lot) is filled to capacity most days and evenings, and programs take place from Leesburg to Arlington. More than 10,000 members of the Northern Virginia Jewish community — estimated to be 80,000 — will be connected by the J this year. Truly amazing! After my 36 years as a Jewish professional and community leader, I’ve learned that relationships are what matter most and will sustain us into the future. Being Jewish is about feeling connected from our hearts. So, I’d like to begin our relationship by sharing a little bit of my story with the hope that I’ll have the opportunity to learn yours. I was invited to join the JCCNV as its Assistant Director in 1989. I was intrigued by the amazing population growth in the area and the opportunity to help build and shape an emerging Jewish community. My job was to help build the new building, hire staff, and develop the original program. I was coming from St. Louis, Mo. where I met my wife, Jane, while serving as the camp director of the JCC’s overnight summer camp, Camp Sabra. Growing up in a small town, Painesville, Ohio, located outside of Cleveland, my family was one of only a few Jewish families, so being Jewish was never taken for granted. As a camper and later as a staff member, I attended and worked at Camp Wise, the Cleveland JCC’s summer camp. This is where my inner Jewish flame was lit and where I gained confidence and pride as a Jew. I became the camp director at 23 years old. It is at camp that my deep love for Israel was nurtured and developed. This led to my engagement with Hillel for the past 18 years, first as the executive director at the Hillel at the University of Maryland and later in various roles at Hillel International in Washington, DC. I am currently its Vice President for Leadership Coaching and also have my own professional coaching practice. I have been deeply engaged with the J and Jewish life in Northern Virginia since moving here 25 years ago. I’ve seen the incredible growth of the organized Jewish community. But, even with all of our wonderful Jewish institutions, we still have many more disconnected Jews than connected ones. This is our challenge. The J has a responsibility to help Jews connect. It also has a unique opportunity to embrace and welcome members and participants who are not Jewish to enjoy all that Jewish life has to offer. And, we can also help to build community by connecting our many institutions.

To meet these challenges, on the next page, my professional partner, Jeff Dannick, will provide you with some exciting news about the J’s future including our Vision 2020 Plan and our renewed focus on leadership.

I look forward to learning more about your stories and to sharing more about our vision, strategies and direction.

Best,

Scott Brown President

JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA

Note from Jeff Dannick, Executive Director As I begin my fifth year as Executive Director of the J, I continue to be honored and privileged to serve our community, our membership, our staff, and our Board of Directors. Unlike the House of Representatives, our leadership election cycles land on odd years, so 2015 marks the conclusion of Connie Pesachowitz’s Presidential term, and the beginning of the Scott Brown administration. Connie and Scott share some common history, as they both worked professionally at the J, moved on to other professional opportunities, and then returned to the J as lay leaders, culminating in the presidency of the Board.

It has been extremely valuable to all of us at the J to have such dedicated and experienced leadership at the helm. On Connie’s watch, we completed our strategic planning process, began some long overdue renovations to the facility and continued to strengthen our programming and financial stability. Now with the transition to Scott’s leadership, we have the opportunity to focus on the implementation of our strategic plan, continue to invest in our facility, and invest even more extensively in the engagement of our broader Jewish community. The plan is driven by a renewed vision statement, ten core values, and six broad strategies. I am pleased to be able to share the highlights with you now, and would welcome more in-depth conversations with all of our interested members.

ValuesPride: We are proud to be a Jewish organization and want to imbue that pride in all we do.Inclusion:  We seek to be inclusive, to welcome all, and to extend our reach so that we can bring Jewish vibrancy, connection, and community to Northern Virginia.Inviting and embracing: We recognize that we are part of a diverse international community and that Northern Virginia is rich with people of many faiths, cultures, and backgrounds.  Respect and empathy: We will embrace all who share in our community with respect and empathy.Excellence: Through our board and staff, we will demonstrate exceptional standards of professionalism and compassion.Partnership: As part of a greater community, we will enhance connections and opportunities to partner, collaborate, and cooperate.Israel: We will seek to build understanding and connection to the people, history, and future of Israel.Tikkun Olam: At the heart of our Jewish community is our responsibility to repair the world — Greater Washington, global Jewry, and Israel.   Learning: We will continually expand our capacity to achieve our vision using new and expansive ideas, learning from others and from all we do.Honesty and integrity: We will deal fairly and with transparency, showing consistency among principles, values, and behaviors while building trust through personal authenticity, and following through on our commitments.

Strategies Our home is the Jewish Community of Northern Virginia and we will seek to reach our community in multiple ways through three Vision-based areas of strategic focus:

Strategy #1: Our building will be a vital component of Jewish life, learning, and culture in our community. Strategy #2: We will bring the vitality of Jewish life, learning, and culture to our community, meeting people where there are. Strategy #3: We will be innovative in programming that begins in our building and moves across Northern Virginia to include all segments of the community through collaborations, partnering and coalitions and to develop Jewish Community that links us to each other, Israel and Jews around the world.

In order to be successful in our vision-based strategies, we must build greater foundational strength. We will do that with three supporting strategies:

Strategy #4: Development and Brandraising: Implement a highly coordinated Board and staff development initiative that aggressively supports the Vision, Values and Strategies Strategy #5: Excellence in Governance: We will establish tools and practices to maximize board effectiveness in support of the Vision and Values. Strategy #6: Operational Excellence: We will align operations to support the plan. We will hire, train, and retrain staff to support the plan seeking the combinations of skills necessary to support the Vision and Values.

VisionGuided by Jewish values, the JCCNV will spark, foster, and build Jewish Connection, Community and Peoplehood throughout Northern Virginia by creating outstanding opportunities for every individual to explore the boundless potential of Jewish life. Understanding that our community is widely scattered, we will meet people where they are both within and beyond the walls of the JCC.

We are at varying stages of execution against these six strategies, but I would like to highlight one in particular. Strategy #5, Excellence in Governance, is dependent on identifying and recruiting the best possible lay leadership. I would like to commend the Leadership Development Committee, chaired by David Yaffe, which has selected and recruited the largest, most diverse class of new Board members since my arrival in 2011. This infusion of new energy and new perspectives, under the leadership of our new President, makes the JCC of Northern Virginia a very exciting place to work and play.

See you at the J,

Jeff DannickExecutive Director

Renovations are Complete! We’re delighted to announce that the first phase of our renovations is now complete. The J you see when you walk through our new automatic sliding doors and scan your badge to pass through our new turnstiles is modern and welcoming. You’ll say “shalom” (hello) to staff sitting behind our custom built desks as you walk across our newly tiled lobby floors to enter the adult lounge (from the lobby!), the auditorium, or the rest of the building. You can admire the art in our refurbished Bodzin Art Gallery on your way to what many regard as the most important renovation of all: our new spacious and automated women’s and men’s restrooms in the gallery hallway. Thank you for bearing with us through construction; now we can all reap the rewards.

There have also been lots of changes to office locations. We’ve expanded several existing offices and created several new ones, allowing many departments to have their own space in which to organize, plan programs, and focus. New office spaces are housing staff in the following departments: Adult Services, Community Engagement, Development, and Cultural Arts. In addition, we’ve created a designated small conference room so staff can hold meetings without having to displace or work around member programming. There is also a designated space for NV Rides, our collaborative effort designed to foster ridesharing programs to help seniors age in place. We hope you’ll come to the J and share in the pride we feel when looking around at the newly renovated spaces.

Thought-Provoking Film FestivalsThe J was the proud host of two area film festivals this spring! The Northern Virginia Jewish Film Festival, was held at Angelika film Center & Café at Mosaic from March 19-29. We screened 15 films with Jewish themes and/or that were made in Israel. The festival was well supported by the community, including 263 patrons who came to our opening film, Above and Beyond! We also turned a spotlight on films celebrating the lives and achievements of people with disabilities at the ReelAbilities Film Festival that took place throughout the capital region April 26-May 3. The festival continues to grow in size and support.

Welcome!Sports and Wellness DirectorElin Kanchev joined our team in the Health, Fitness, and Aquatics department. His primary focus is on the personal training component of our department, and he will also be giving wellness talks and subbing/teaching classes as needed. Elin is originally from Plovdiv, Bulgaria and currently lives in Alexandria, Virginia. He started swimming when he was seven years old due to poor health and has been avidly exercising ever since. Elin’s passion is martial arts — he won the Bulgarian National tournament in 2004, he is a member of the USA Boxing Potomac Valley Association, and he’s been helping many people get in shape throughout the years as a NASM certified personal trainer. We’re excited to have him bring his passion and experience to the J.

Membership Sales Associate We are happy to introduce Alex Kratik who recently joined the Membership team. He’ll be helping our J family grow even more as he expands our reach in the community. Alex has worked for the Boy Scouts of America, served as Chairman of the Board and President of the Waldorf Jaycees, and been a sales consultant at Waldorf Ford and Dodge. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Norwich University, The Military College of Vermont. Alex grew up going to his local JCC and attending camp there, and he is excited to be a part of our J. Welcome aboard Alex!

Camp Achva Director/Community Teen LiaisonBrian Grossbard joined the Family Services team in January, just in time for the ball to really get rolling for our upcoming summer camp season. Brian brings with him an extensive background in Jewish communal work, including serving as an Executive Director in various organizations such as BBYO, Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), and Hillel. Additionally, Brian has a long history of personal experience in JCC Camps in many roles: as a participant, a counselor, and a parent of campers in our own J Camps.

All of the favorites from past festivals will be there, including entertainment, an Israeli-style shuk (market), and kosher food for purchase. We hope that the new location will make it possible for even more Northern Virginians to join us for a taste of Israeli culture and to wish Israel a happy birthday!See page 11 for details.

DISCOVER YOUR STORY.JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, the J is able to provide quality programs, activities and services to a diverse and growing community. Below, we highlight a brand new program.

NV Rides hits the road! The number of older adults in Northern Virginia is growing at twice the rate of the rest of the population and transportation is at the top of the list of emerging needs. To help, the J has teamed up with Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA), Fairfax County, and local non-profits to launch the NV Rides program. Thanks to a grant from Fairfax County, we are officially on the road!

NV Rides is a network of service organizations operating volunteer driver transportation programs. These programs help older adults live independently in their homes for as long as possible. “By using a coordinated hub model, organizations providing rides are able to run their volunteer programs more efficiently and increase their volunteer pool,” says Jennifer Kanarek, NV Rides Manager. “Our goal is to ensure that no senior in need of a ride will be turned away for lack of drivers.” A community launch event is planned for May 19 at the J.

We are grateful to have received startup grant allocations from Fairfax County and The Community Foundation of Northern Virginia. To keep us on the road and ensure sustainability, NV Rides is seeking funding from corporate, foundation, and government sources, as well as individual donors. If you care about helping non-driving adults get the volunteer rides they need to retain their independence, please consider supporting this important program.

To learn more about NV Rides or to volunteer as a driver with one of our partner organizations, please visit nvrides.org or call Jennifer at 703.537.3071. Visit us on the web at nvrides.org, “Like” us on Facebook, or register for our electronic newsletter so you can receive the latest updates from the program.

What is your favorite aspect of the JCC and why?Answering this question is like trying to name my favorite child. Well, maybe not exactly like that because I only have one child. In the case of the J, I cannot pick a favorite from the multiple opportunities the staff provides to enrich my mind, improve my health, learn about Judaism, and connect with friends and the community. The wide variety of activities are why I continue to appreciate how much the J offers me personally as well as to the community.

Why is volunteering at the J important to you? When I retired from my career in highway safety research, I wanted to bring some of my knowledge to my local community. One opportunity to do this was through the adult services program. They supported my efforts to introduce the AAA /AARP Car-Fit program to members as well as the Fairfax community. This program helps educate older drivers how to properly adjust the safety features on their cars. That’s one way to ensure that people arrive safely at the J to participate in its programs, including the Positive Aging Fair, for which I have also volunteered my time. These and other volunteer activities at the J provide meaningful ways for me to connect with others by lending a hand and sharing my knowledge and skills.

JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIAJEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA

Thanks in great part to our members, foundations, corporate partners and friends, the J continues fulfilling its commitment to this community to provide a comfortable atmosphere rich in Jewish family traditions. We encourage you to think about the J when making your charitable-giving plans.

Become a Member of theTrustee Circle or Chai SocietyDues and program fees cover less than 80% of the JCCNV’s annual operating expenses. We depend on the generous philanthropy of individuals, corporations, and foundations to ensure our financial sustainability. Donating more than two-thirds of the funds raised throughout the year, Trustee Circle and Chai Society members are the cornerstone of the J’s ability to build a strong community based on Jewish values.

The Trustee Circle: Donors in the Trustee Circle donate a minimum cash gift of $3,000 or more annually. This special visionary group of leaders understands the importance of the JCCNV to our Jewish community and the fact that none of our extraordinary programs would be possible without a financially sound operation.

Chai Society: By joining the Chai Society, members are demonstrating their understanding that the life of the JCCNV depends on our ability to financially support our general operations in addition to programmatic support. The Chai Society is made up of a special group of donors who give at least $1,800 to our General Operating Fund, allowing us to utilize the funds to best meet the needs of the J. To augment their general operating support, many members of the Chai Society choose to contribute supplementary dollars to the programs about which they are most passionate. Chai Society members are also named as Trustee Circle members when their contributions equal or exceed $3,000 annually.

To learn more about our donor societies, contact Jeff Dannick, JCCNV Executive Director, at 703.537.3023 or [email protected]. To learn more about other giving opportunities, please contact Michelle Pearlstein, Development Associate, at 703.537.3033, or [email protected].

Give CashCash gifts allow the JCCNV to use funds where they are most urgently needed. You may also designate your gift for a specific purpose, or make it in honor or memory of a person or an occasion through the tribute program. A special card will be sent to recognize your tribute gift.

Donate a Used CarDonate now and help the JCCNV accomplish its mission. Your donation is tax-deductible. Free towing wherever the car is — as is. You can download the car donation form on our website or request one from our reception desk.

Find out if your Employerhas a Matching-Gift ProgramIn many cases, your cash contribution can become twice as valuable. It’s usually quick and easy; just complete your company’s form and your gift to the J will be matched. (Sample companies that match are Exxon-Mobil and IBM.)

Give through the Combined FederalCampaign or United WayThe JCCNV is a participant in the United Way and Combined Federal Campaign annual campaigns. When you make your United Way/CFC gift through your employer, please designate the JCCNV. United Way #8437 / CFC #8198.

Transfer Appreciated AssetsStocks or other investments that have been held for more than one year and have grown in value can provide a substantial gift to the J at a low net cost to you. The full value of your appreciated asset is tax-deductible and you can avoid paying tax on the gains.

Give Insurance/IRAs/Retirement FundsIf you no longer need a life insurance policy, IRA or other retirement fund, consider giving it to the JCCNV. Even if you are still paying premiums on an insurance policy, it can be given to the J; you may take an income-tax deduction when the JCCNV is named owner and beneficiary. Alternately, you may choose to set up a new life insurance policy naming the JCC of Northern Virginia as beneficiary, ensuring support for the J in the future.

Establish an Endowment FundBy establishing an endowment fund at the JCCNV, you will be assured that the programs and services you care about will endure. You may name the endowment fund and designate which area of the Center will benefit. Once the endowment fund reaches a minimum of $10,000, the fund will be formally established.

Make a BequestCreate a legacy for your community by naming the JCCNV as a beneficiary in your will or insurance policy.

Volunteer through the JCCNV Volunteer CorpsIf you have the time or expertise to lend a hand for the J, your help is needed and would be much appreciated! Visit jccnv.org or contact [email protected], 703.537.3060.

JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA DISCOVER YOUR STORY.JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA

The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington is thrilled to partner with the JCC of Northern Virginia to connect people with their passions, talents, and hunger for change. No matter your interest or background, we encourage you to MAKE IT YOURS whether you’re growing your family or growing your business, finding your partner or finding care for a parent. Whether your interest is poverty or inclusion, education or crisis relief, now is the time to grow your network, inspire a child, celebrate tradition, explore Israel, or change a life. Make The Federation Yours and make an extraordinary impact.

The community-building partnerships between The Federation and local agencies such as the J has resulted in boundless impact, benefitting the six critical areas of need in our local and global Jewish community: Jewish education, vulnerable populations, Israel and overseas, emergency response, inclusion and Jewish identity. Proudly, community members have been MAKING IT THEIRS. At the 4th annual Good Deeds Day on March 15, around 8,000 Greater Washington do-gooders came together and volunteered in a community day of service. From preparing and serving lunch to the homeless, making toys for dogs that need forever homes, to cleaning a local park, and more, we were able to show the international community what our Greater Washington community can do.

Our community partnership will continue with Israel@67, a celebration of Israel’s birthday. On May 31, we will come together to delight our senses with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Israeli culture! You can MAKE IT YOURS by dancing to Israeli music, participating in crafts with your family, and enjoying live entertainment.

We believe that expanding opportunities for meaningful connections to Jewish life gives members of our community a multitude of ways to build their Jewish journey. For this reason, the very first Jewish Community Day at Nationals Park will be taking place on August 30. We invite members of our community; from preschoolers to senior citizens to come together for pre-game baseball-themed festivities and to watch the Nationals take on the Marlins. We can’t wait to cheer on the Nats as one Greater Washington Jewish community.

Together, we continue to imagine how our community might be different if we all decide to do Jewish rather than merely being Jewish. The Federation’s strong partnerships with agencies such as the JCC of Northern Virginia provide meaningful programming, pathways to involvement, volunteer opportunities, and more ways discover individual Jewish journeys.

The JCC of Northern Virginia was selected as one of six JCCs across the country to pilot Project Welcome Home, a JCC Association initiative meant to help the agency better assist US servicemen and women, and their families, to re-engage with their communities. The project, steered by the Jewish Welfare Board (JWB) and Jewish Chaplains Council, a program of the JCC Association, incorporates the needs of veterans, their families and caregivers, to help ease their way back into the community. We are proud to be a part of such an important initiative that addresses the needs of our returning military and their families.

We want our servicemen and women, and their families, to know that they have a home here at the J; we are here to serve your needs and thank you.

To make certain that we do as much as we can to help, we need your input! We are seeking active duty personnel and those transitioning to civilian life, or who are recently separated from the military, to volunteer on a steering committee to help ensure that the programming is responsive to the needs and interests of our service men and women. The committee will also provide feedback that will help guide the national effort as it expands beyond the first six pilot sites.

Our Community Engagement Director, Laurie Albert, is very excited to be our Military Service Liaison for Project

The Shiri Rahamim Shlichut Program Chair: Scott Brown

It is with a heavy heart that our community mourns the loss of our beloved first Shlicha, Shiri Rahamim, who lost her fierce battle with cancer. Shiri spent the last few years of her young life fighting this terrible disease with the passion and determination that she put into everything she did in life. She lived her life fully and actively, despite cancer and with cancer, and thus served as a model for the rest of us. If you had the opportunity to know Shiri, you know how much she enriched our lives and touched the hearts of so many in our community. In 2007, she came to us as a Shlicha, but to many, she became a daughter, a sister, and a friend — we will truly miss her.

As tribute to Shiri and to keep her in our hearts, we are pleased to rename our Shlichut program, The Shiri Rahamim Shlichut Program. We will also engrave her name on the new Jerusalem stone donor wall in the JCC lobby.

Lastly, after receiving numerous requests from members of our community inquiring how to help keep Shiri’s memory alive, we have set up a special fund in her memory, ensuring the continuity of The Shiri Rahamim Shlichut Program. To donate to this fund, please visit jccnv.org and click on Give Now and select The Shiri Rahamim Shlichut Program Fund from the drop down menu or send your gift to the J, to the attention of Michelle Pearlstein, Development Coordinator.

If you have any questions regarding The Shiri Rahamim Shlichut Program, please contact [email protected], 703.537.3064.

The JCCNV Fine Arts Program supports and encourages the development of Jewish arts and artists. The program is also committed to establishing and strengthening the relationship between the Northern Virginia community and Israel by integrating Israeli arts into its program. Over the years, the J’s Bodzin Art Gallery exhibitions have attracted talented artists who work in a wide variety of media including painting, photography, jewelry, crafts and new media. For a listing of past exhibits, visit our Fine Arts Archive at jccnvarts.org.

Exhibits Supporting the creative talent in the metropolitan DC area, the Bodzin Art Gallery continues to feature many local artists.

Celebrating our Children’s CreativityMay 26–June 23 The JCCNV Early Childhood Services department presents “A Reggio Exhibit,” which showcases the special philosophy of teaching art being used by the program. Beginning in Reggio, Italy after WWII, and based on the ideas that children have a say in the direction of their learning, use all their senses, relate to each other and the exploration of materials, and are encouraged with endless ways of expressing themselves. A large part of the philosophy centers on the use of art and materials.

The Early Childhood Learning Center’s (ECLC) annual exhibit of children’s work from the 2014–2015 school year focuses on long-term topic studies from classes ranging from infants to four-year-olds, showcasing the projects that come out of the Atelier (workshop). The ECLC’s modernized “Atelier method” is a variant of fine art instruction taking place in an inviting art room that provides a wonderful place for children to explore their creative side under the guidance of our professional artist, Sarah D. Samuels Vejvoda, Atelierista.

Scottish Jewish community dates back to at least the 1700s and, for most of that time, constituted the largest non-Christian community in the country. It has produced scientists and doctors, judges and Members of Parliament, artists and writers — and farmers and foresters, and kilt makers and whisky distillers! The story of this community and how it maintains its traditions, while fully embracing Scottish culture is a fascinating one and yet, surprisingly, little has been formally presented on its existence.

In the Showcases: Varda Avnisan (fused glass) and Susan Fox-Hirschmann (ceramics: pottery, stoneware, porcelain).

A special reception will be held in conjunction with the opening. The exhibit is sponsored in part by David Bruce Smith.

• Early childhood directors as visionaries — our professional staff has the chochma (wisdom) to make sound decisions for their population

• The importance of early childhood educators as professionals — through learning communities and attending conferences and workshops, our educators develop ahavat limud (a love of learning) for themselves and their students

• A focus on families as engaged partners — opportunities are provided throughout the year to build kehilla (community) between our families and staff

• The concept of the environment as inspiration for inquiry — spaces are intentionally designed to encourage curiosity, intellectual engagement, and creativity

• Emphasis on the Jewish value of sh’mirat ha’guf (taking care of our bodies) through nutrition and exercise

• Further learning about Israel to educate our students and their families about the story of the Jewish people

EARLY CHILDHOOD SERVICES

A part of the JCCNV Family Services Department, JCCNV Early Childhood Services offers a variety of family programming, enrichment classes, Sunday Family Fun Days, Family Fun Nights, and Toddlers’ and Kids’ Night Out programs. Early Childhood Services also boasts the Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) which includes an Infant/Toddler Program for children ages 6 weeks–24 months old, and a licensed preschool with extended care for children ages 24 months–4 years old.

The Early Childhood Learning Center promotes developmental growth through creative interaction between children and teachers within a warm, caring environment that’s based on Jewish values. Offered at two convenient locations — in Fairfax at the J, and in Alexandria at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, highlights include:

JCCNV ECLC–Fairfax • Licensed preschool• Licensed childcare from 6 weeks to 4

years old• Licensed camp program

For information regarding the Fairfax location, contact Amit Hickman.

JCCNV ECLC–Alexandria• Licensed preschool• Licensed childcare from 18 months to 4

years old• Licensed camp program

For information regarding the Alexandria location, contact Dina Backer.

Our Philosophy of LearningThe Early Childhood Learning Center strives to help each child grow as an individual. We emphasize the development of self-confidence and a positive self-image. Our activities provide experiences to foster social skills and

emotional maturity and to strengthen cognitive and physical growth. Play is a child’s work. Play provides the opportunity for children to explore their world, find out how to get along with others, strengthen their muscles, try new activities, build self-confidence and enhance self-esteem. Play is how the young child develops the necessary skills and social competencies that will be needed as he/she grows and matures.

The primary goal of our Infant/Toddler Program is to provide each child with the best of care in a clean and nurturing environment. Our staff works to encourage each child in every stage of his or her social and emotional growth, as well as to support and strengthen language and cognitive development. The daily routine is set up to provide stimulating experiences for children to learn and explore their environment through their own curiosity.

Our teaching philosophy follows a Reggio Emilia inspired philosophy that is based on the following ideas:• Children have a say in the direction of

their learning• Children are able to learn through

experiences of touching, moving, listening, seeing, and hearing

• Children have a relationship with other children and material items to explore

• Children have endless ways and opportunities to express themselves

Our philosophy involves an emergent curriculum that builds on the interests of the children. Topics of study are chosen through discussion/observations of children, community or family events, interests of the children, and teacher-directed provocations. The curriculum provides hands-on learning experiences, areas for children to experiment with the natural world, and real-life problem-solving with opportunities for creative thinking.

JCCA Sheva Early Learning FrameworkOur ECLC is participating in the JCCA Sheva Early Learning Framework. This framework is a basis for the continued education of the children in our program. It builds upon the foundations already in place through the Reggio Emilia inspired philosophy viewed through a Jewish lens.

Wellness is so much more than merely physical health, exercise or nutrition By: Paula Cole, HFA Director

Wellness encompasses the fusion of your physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. What does that mean and why does it make a difference? Every day we are inundated with new health tips and exercise tips, but we rarely get information about how our mental and spiritual health adds to our full state of health. Think about the warm feelings you get when you hold a grandchild; see your child sing, dance or play a sport; or see a baby take their first step. Those emotions have you feeling like you are ageless, life is wonderful and you can accomplish anything. One area of focus for our department is to bring to life the many aspects of wellness offered at the J and convey how they might positively impact your life and wellbeing.

Summer is a great time for fun. The weather encourages us to be outdoors more, take vacations and spend time with family and friends. The summer creates a time of mental wellbeing and happiness — a time of optimism or meaningfulness in life. Whatever happiness is, it makes us feel good and we want it. We know we don’t

always have control over our happiness, but being able to manage the emotional ups and downs is important for both body and mind.

Why be happy? Scientific studies have found a connection between happiness, optimism and life satisfaction and a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease. Of course, you cannot say that being happy will prevent heart attacks. However, having a good sense of well-being makes it easier to maintain good habits: exercising, eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep.

Studies attribute lower blood pressure, normal body weight and healthier blood fat profiles with a better sense of well-being. Some studies have also shown that optimism is associated with lower levels of inflammation.

Go ahead, lie about your age. It may be the very thing that helps you live a longer life. If those fibbers truly believe that they are younger than what it says on their birth certificate, a new study shows they are among a group of people who have a lower death rate. That’s compared with those who felt their age or even older than their years.

Just as our today has been determined by the way we lived yesterday, so our tomorrow is determined by the way we live now. So remember:

• A glass half full might be healthier than a glass half empty

• Live within the margins of your strength, for even within your limitations, there is an opportunity to improve and find contentment

• Make the most of what you have and of situations that confront you

• Discoveries that have taken place within our lifetime are both wonderful and terrifying

• The extent to which you are committed to your ideals will determine the use you make of your power

• The moment we become satisfied with things as they are, the moment we are content with the status quo, we begin to move backward. All life is movement.

LiL’ Boots Program Ages: 3–4The LiL’ Boots program is specially designed for your little one! It provides a great introduction to the basic fundamentals of the game and, just as importantly, team play. It allows children ages 3-4 to develop their physical, mental and social skills in a non-competitive environment. The trainers are chosen based on their personality and their ability to work with very young players.

Advanced LiL’ Boots Ages 5–6The program is designed for children who have taken a LiL’ Boots class in the past and are in need of additional challenge beyond what is offered in our traditional LiL’ Boots program. Advanced LiL’ Boots builds on the fundamentals of our normal LiL’ Boots class, while continuing to work on coordination and ball work.

LiL’ Boots 4x4 League Ages: 5–6The Lil’ Boots League offers the best of both worlds: professional know-how demonstrated through carefully selected developmental activities and the opportunity to allow the game to be the ultimate teacher.  With no score kept, the focus is on individual development, confidence building, and allowing each child the opportunity to come into his/her own as young players. The program consists of 30 minutes of skill training by professional soccer coaches and 30 minutes of league play.

Player Development BRIDGEAges 7–8An intermediate program that focuses on basic individual skills such a ball mastery and 1v1 moves. It is the missing “Bridge” between our LiL’ Boots program and the more advanced Player Development program and consists of age-appropriate activities that ensure a smooth transition to the next level.

Take Steps to Stay Safe around Water Swimming is the most popular summer activity. The best thing you can do to help your family stay safe is to enroll in age-appropriate swim lessons. Contact [email protected], or 703.537.3053.

Follow these safety tips whenever you are in, on or around water:Source: http://www.redcross.org/prepare/disaster/water-safety

Make Water Safety Your Priority • Swim in designated areas supervised by

lifeguards.• Always swim with a buddy; do not allow

anyone to swim alone. Even at a public pool or a lifeguarded beach, use the buddy system!

• Ensure that everyone in the family learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate water orientation and Learn-to-Swim courses.

• Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

• Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.

• Establish rules for your family and enforce them without fail. For example, set limits based on each person’s ability, do not let anyone play around drains and suction fittings, and do not allow swimmers to hyperventilate before swimming under water or have breath-holding contests.

• Even if you do not plan on swimming, be cautious around natural bodies of water including ocean shoreline, rivers and lakes. Cold temperatures, currents and underwater hazards can make a fall into these bodies of water dangerous.

• If you go boating, wear a life jacket! Most boating fatalities occur from drowning.

• Avoid alcohol use. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination; affects swimming and diving skills; and reduces the body’s ability to stay warm.

Prevent Unsupervised Access to the Water • Install and use barriers around your

home pool or hot tub. Safety covers and pool alarms should be added as additional layers of protection.

• Ensure that pool barriers enclose the entire pool area and are at least 4-feet high with gates that are self-closing, self-latching and open outward, and away from the pool. The latch should be high enough to be out of a small child’s reach.

• If you have an above-ground or inflatable pool, remove access ladders and secure the safety cover whenever the pool is not in use.

• Remove any structures that provide access to the pool, such as outdoor furniture, climbable trees, decorative walls and playground equipment.

• Keep toys that are not in use away from the pool and out of sight. Toys can attract young children to the pool.

Maintain Constant Supervision • Actively supervise kids whenever around

the water — even if lifeguards are present. Do not just drop your kids off at the public pool or leave them at the beach — designate a responsible adult to supervise.

• Always stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions when supervising children around water.

Know What to Do in an Emergency • If a child is missing, check the water first.

Seconds count in preventing death or disability.

• Know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number.

• If you own a home pool or hot tub, have appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit.

The Jewish Tradition of Mah JonggPresentation by Gregg Swain, co-author of Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game Thursday, June 4, noon–2pm, the JNoon: Lunch (bring dairy or parve/meatless)12:30pm: Program Presented by: Gregg Swain, co-author Mah Jongg: The Art of the GameNote: You need not be a Mah Jongg player, nor Jewish, to enjoy this presentation! The Jewish tradition of Mah Jongg will be explored when Gregg Swain, co-author of Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game, gives a talk tracing the connections of Jewish families to the game. Using beautiful photographs from her book, and other vintage photographs from the last 90 years, Gregg will explain some of the ties between the Chinese and Jewish communities, and their shared love of the game. She will trace the history of Mah Jongg using photographs of sets that were used during those years. No knowledge of the game is needed to understand the talk — only an appreciation for art and/or an interest in recent history.

“Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game is the first book to fully capture the story of the exotic and exciting game of Mah Jongg, offering an intimate look at the history of the game as well as the visual beauty of the tiles… Finding few references, Israel and Swain set out to create a book that chronicles the early beginnings of the game and documents

Mah Jongg sets and accoutrements from the most basic, made simply of paper, to some of the most opulent sets made of precious materials. Recognized and respected scholars and game experts have collaborated with Israel and Swain, contributing important chapters on the game’s history and its pieces. Lastly, great collectors from around the globe have shared their incredible sets and memories for the first time in one book for everyone to enjoy… “ — Book website.Book signing will follow the presentation.Coffee, tea, and dessert provided.Fee: $3/ Free for memberNo RSVP – Just come!

“Monticello is the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson — designed and redesigned and built and rebuilt for more than forty years — and its gardens were a botanic showpiece, a source of food, and an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world.” Our 45-minute tour of the mansion will include information on the Jewish connection at Monticello. “Monticello survives because of the efforts of its two major owners, Uriah Phillips Levy, USN, and his nephew, Jefferson Monroe Levy. These two men and their families held a very modern notion that the houses of great men should be preserved as ‘monuments to their glory,’ and their stewardship of the home and property is remarkable and significant.”

There will be adequate time for “on your own” touring of the beautiful gardens and grounds, or to take a guided outdoor tour (hourly) focusing on the experiences of the enslaved people who lived and labored on the Monticello plantation, or to view the interesting exhibits in the museum galleries and shop at the gift shop. JEWISH HERITAGE VIDEO COLLECTION The Jewish Heritage Video Collection is partially underwritten by Thelma and George Elpern and the Jewish Video Library Fund. The J maintains a video library with Jewish content, thanks to the Jewish Heritage Video Foundation. The collection ranges from light comedies to “Schindler’s List” and “Shine” and includes a large selection of foreign, Holocaust and children’s films.

There are also study guides for educators dealing with topics such as assimilation, anti-Semitism, Jewish identity, intermarriage, Jewish humor and Jewish love and marriage. These are available, with accompanying videos, free of charge to schools, synagogues and church groups. For more information, contact [email protected], or 703.537.3061.

J POLICIES Refund PolicyFull cash refunds will be given if the JCCNV cancels an activity due to insufficient enrollment. Cancellation prior to the first day of the session will incur a $7 handling charge that is deducted from any refund. No refunds will be processed for one-time programs after the program has begun.

Credit is given for classes if one cancels after the first meeting and before the second. The credit amount is prorated, less a $7 processing fee. Credits must be presented at the time of use to be valid. Credits cannot be used toward membership, preschool tuition, daycare or camp fees. Other restrictions may apply.

Kashruth PolicyThe JCCNV observes kashruth, which requires a strict separation of meat and dairy foods. All food and drink brought into the J must be dairy or parve. For information, please call the J.

The evening program will also include: • Election and inauguration of our largest “class” of Board

members in recent history — including President-Elect, Scott Brown;

• Presentation of recognition awards to several individuals for their exceptional work at the J and in the community;

• A celebration of the J’s past, present and future community impact via a newly produced video and live testimonials

Delicious dessert reception follows the program. We hope you’ll join us as we chart our course for an exciting future!
