Congratulations to all the lead-ership, commit-tee chairs and members of the Arkansas Chap-ter of ASHRAE. It is very excit-ing to see all the hard work and dedication we have as a

chapter. The entire team has demon-strated the strong leadership qualities required to make this year a success. I would like to personally say a big thank you to everyone. Jon Symko gave our tech session in September on who controls ASHRAE. He pointed out that the members are the people in control of ASHRAE.

Our program for the September meeting on variable frequency drives was very informative. We can all use the background information on matching drives with motors especial-ly on existing systems. Understand-ing the potential problems with the insulation and power spikes is im-portant. This month our presentation will be on Variable Refrigerant Flow systems. The July 2012 issue of the ASHRAE Journal had a very good article on ASHRAE Standard 15 and VRF. The presentation for the Central Arkansas meeting will be given by James Pritt. James Pritt has 40 years of experience in various sales/sales management capacities with Larkin Coils/Heatcraft Refrigeration/Lennox Industries (all the same company now), Carrier Corporation, LSB Indus-tries (parent company of Climate Master and IEC fan coils), Johnson Controls and LG Electronics. He has lectured at numerous ASHRAE events and is considered an expert on VRF technology. The presentation for the

North West Arkansas meeting will be given by Gary Mitchell. Gary Mitchell has 29 + years of experience in the HVAC Industry and has a unique perspective having been involved in many aspects of the business. Cur-rently Gary is the Central Region Sales Engineer for LG Commercial Air Conditioning and is responsible for promoting and helping to apply LG’s line of Variable Refrigerant Flow Equipment. Gary began as a contrac-tor owning and operating his own HVAC business for many years. Gary then spent several years on the distri-bution side of the business. He moved into sales positions and even-tually became the sales manager for a manufacture’s rep firm in Chicago where he was first introduce to the Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems ten years ago. In those ten years, Gary has worked with many of the major manufactures of VRF equipment including Mitsubishi, Daikin, Sanyo, and currently LG. Gary has help educate consulting engineers, con-tractors and owners on the ad-vantages of VRF along with proper design and application of VRF Sys-tems in many major markets through-out the US. This technology with all of its advantages is changing the way we heat and cool in the United States and Gary’s goal is to continue to educate and promote VRF Technology which is the “System of Choice” around the world.

With the cooler weather of the fall, brings our annual Central Arkansas fall golf tournament. This tourna-ment is a fundraising event to raise money for ASHRAE Research Promo-tion. Tony Demarco has planned another great tournament at the Country Club of Arkansas in Maumelle on Monday, October 22nd.

Tony’s hard work always results in a lot of fun and a significant portion of the chapter contribution to ASHRAE Research. We hope to see everyone on the course.

We also have a continuing education seminar on September 28. This seminar will be a joint effort with NEBB at the Harrison Energy Partners office in Little Rock. Don’t miss this opportunity to earn 6 personal development hours.

ASHRAE President Tom Watson’s focus this year is on community sustainability. Our chapter is sup-porting his theme by sponsoring a Chapter Community Sustainability Project with Habitat for Humanity on the morning of October 6th from 8-12. We can all make a difference in the community. I hope you have the opportunity to take time from your busy schedule to help us work on this housing construction project. Don’t forget to thank an ASHRAE member for donating their time.

ASHRAE is teaming up with the U.S. Green Building Council – Arkansas Chapter (USGBC) and Arkansas Asso-ciation of Educational Administrators (AAEA) to provide mentors for the 2012-13 Green Schools Challenge.

The Green School Challenge, chal-lenges all participating schools to be more environmentally aware and sustainable. Each school will form a Green Team who will select a low or no cost project to begin September 1 and conclude March 15, 2013. To assist these teams there will be volunteer mentors who will help with ideas, documentation, and communi-ty resources. At the end of the year each team will submit their energy or resource savings with either a 5 minute video or digital presentation for judging. Prizes include trophies and cash to the top schools.

ASHRAE is currently looking for volunteers to become Green Team Mentors to assist schools with their Green efforts. If you would like to become a Green Team Mentor or learn more about what is involved please contact Zac Buckmiller ([email protected]) for more information. Or you can visit www.usgreenbuildingcouncilarkansas.wildapricot.org/ and click on “Enter the Green Schools Challenge for 2012-2013.” Furthermore, if you would like to get your youngsters school signed up for the contest visit the website above to fill out the entry packet and send it in.

RRESEARCHESEARCH PPROMOTIONROMOTION Bill Simpson—RP Chair

October officially marks the start of our ASHRAE Resource Promotion (RP) cam-paign. The Arkansas chapter has historically been a very strong chapter in most regards, especially RP. As a matter of fact, under the leadership of last year’s RP committee chair, Steve Keen, and through the generosity of you all, we, as a chapter, contributed almost $57,000. The first and most important step in our campaign is to say “thank you”. Thank you very much. In that spirit, we will proudly kickoff this year’s campaign by recognizing our 2011-12 donors at our October meeting.

For those of you unfamiliar with RP, our $57,000 is pooled with over another $2.1 million donated last year by the rest of society to fund research, educa-tion, the ASHRAE Foundation and special Board approved projects and pro-grams. It is the research program that sets ASHRAE apart from other profes-sional societies and associations of its kind. ASHRAE’s Handbook series, tech-nical programs, standards and special publications all utilize the results of RP. The ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) offers a wide range of professional devel-opment seminars and short courses made possible thanks to RP. The Founda-tion was established to provide long-term, on-going financial resources and create a lasting endowment for research, education and ASHRAE. Finally, RP also supports the General Fund for special board approved projects such as research projects, education programs, sustainability projects, membership enhancements and meeting subsidies.

Leading by example, our chapter has already achieved “Full Circle” which means the chapter officers have all contributed at the Honor Roll level for 2012-13. In memory of past society President Lynn Bellenger, our chapter has also been challenged by society to contribute $500 to the Foundation in her name.

Again, thank you for setting the philanthropic bar high and making our chapter standout as one of the most generous chapter’s in society.

YYOUNGOUNG EENGINEERSNGINEERS IINN ASHRAE (YEA)ASHRAE (YEA) Caleb Haynes—YEA Chair

We’ve had some great things going on already this year with our Arkansas Young Engineers in ASHRAE group. Terry Jacks and Trey Newcomb both at-tended the YEA Leadership Weekend held at the ASHRAE Headquarters in Atlan-ta, GA on September 9-10. Caleb Haynes also represented the Arkansas Chap-ter at the event as a Region VIII YEA Regional Coordinator and a member of the YEA Leadership Weekend Subcommittee.

The purpose of the YEA Leadership Weekend is to give young upcoming engi-neers the opportunity to network with fellow engineers in ASHRAE, as well as to improve their professional and leadership skills to better serve as leaders in the HVAC industry.

“We participated in several different activities one of which was the Myers-Briggs personality type indicator test; we then used our individual re-sults from the test to learn our areas of strength and weakness in the work environment. This turned out to be very useful in pointing out areas that we would have to improve in order to take our careers where we wanted them to go, as well as what we could do to help us improve in those areas. We also enjoyed meeting and networking with engineers from across the country. It really gave us the chance to gauge our pro-gress in our individual careers.” - Trey Newcomb
