ABATE UPDATE

Lane-splitting in California has always been allowed, but in a sort of “no law for it, no law against it,” sort of way. That all changed last week when California Assembly Members

The argument for lane-splitting is that when a car stops at a rapid rate, the option to split gives the rider an opportunity to go around the car, rather than slamming into its rear, even if there is a car in the neighboring lane. This has led to fewer rear-impact related casualties on motorcycles in California and is the main selling point for this addition to the bill. There are two requirements for legal splitting in California:

1. The motorcycle cannot be traveling at a rate faster than 50mph2. The motorcycle cannot be traveling more than 15mph faster than the speed of

(b) and obviously you cannot be going against any other laws relating to the safe operation of a vehicle.

was moving at 30mph, you could split at 45mph.In my opinion, this won’t change much for us California riders. I believe it will give Police the backing to punish unsafe lane-splitting when they see it, but I doubt you’ll get pulled over if you safely bump it up to 75mph to pass someone going 60 on the freeway.

New legislation clears up lane-splitting laws in CALANE SPLITTING OFFICIALLY CALIFORNIA LEGALBy Morgan Gales

ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATIONDate of Hearing: April 6, 2015 Jim Frazier, ChairAB 51 - Quirk) - As Amended Feb. 11, 2015 SUBJECT: SplittingSUMMARY: Explicitly authorizes motorcycles to drive between stopped or slow moving vehicles in the same lane (lane split) under certain conditions.

1) Unequivocally authorizes motorcycles to drive between stopped or slow moving vehicles in the same lane on divided and undivided streets, roads, or highways if the following conditions are met: going in the same direction. 2) Provides that motorcycles must continue to obey existing laws relating to the safe operation of a vehicle. EXISTING LAW: rider, designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground. 2) Requires, whenever a roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked entirely within a single lane.

higher rates of speed. Lane splitting is illegal in all states, with the exception of California, where the practice is neither expressly authorized nor prohibited. Lane splitting, however, is a legal practice in many European and Asian countries where it is frequently utilized in highly urbanized areas.Lane splitting is controversial in the United States. Motorcyclists favor the practice, saying it improves safety while motorists typically dislike it. Groups such as the American Motorcycle Association note that one of the most dangerous situations for any on-highway motorcyclist is to be caught in

by distracted and inattentive motorists, can rear-end motorcyclists when they are stopped behind other cars. According to the National

one of the most common types of accident on the road are rear-end collisions, which NHTSA indicates makes up nearly 40% of all accidents in the United States. While rear-end accidents typically result in minor damage when they happen between vehicles, they frequently result in serious injury or death when motorcyclists are involved, primarily because motorcycles offer little or no protection to the rider. Motorcyclists note that lane splitting allows them to achieve greater protection because they can position themselves between (rather than behind) vehicles in

Long-wearing buns for your sport-touring machine. Watch for wear at the front though. What do you want from sport-touring tires? If you’re like most, you want everything: maximum traction, superb handling, awesome wet grip, and such good wear that you hardly ever have to replace them. Well, good luck with that. But for some riders, especially those with sport-touring machines who put on serious mileage every year, wear might just be the most important aspect. Those owners will like Avon’s latest sport-touring tire, the Storm 3D X-Ms. According to the company, the 3Ds will provide 15 to 20 percent more mileage than the previous Storm

to the Yamaha FJR1300ES we had around here survived 6,710 miles of back roading, touring, and commuting. That’s substantially more life than we coaxed from the Yamaha’s stock tires—like, double. What’s more, the rear Avon still looked virtually new. And when comparing used tread depth to new, we think the rear 3D should last 12,000 miles or more. Which is amazing for a tire holding up a heavy, reasonably powerful bike while still offering very good grip. (Unfortunately, California’s drought kept us from testing the Avons’ wet traction.)And the front? Well, at the same mileage, the front was visibly cupped even, as it had plenty of center tread remaining, which is not uncommon with a front-heavy machine. FJRs (and other big sport-tourers) tend to chew up fronts,

case here. Because of the cupping, the Yamaha’s handling suffered and even had a nasty low-speed bar shake. Up to that point, the FJR handled well—neutral steering, excellent stability—on the Avons, so we can recommend the tires for lighter bikes without hesitation and even for the heftier sleds

on wear patterns.

The weather is perfect for riding right now, and those of us in the Central Valley are lucky to have so many great places to go to within a stone’s throw of town. For a quick day ride, there’s no place like the Millerton Lake area to cruise along the backroads and enjoy the summer sun. When headed in that direction, The Roadhouse in Clovis is the perfect place to stop and relax, enjoy a bite to eat, some good music, and a cold beverage. The Roadhouse is located at 20023 Auberry Road, just southeast of Friant and Millerton Lake. On the weekends it’s not unusual to see dozens of bikes parked out front, from old Panheads to new Indians to Road Kings to Sportsters, as well as many vintage hot rods. The inside of the bar is nice and cool, with a pool table and dart board, as well as a stage for the

has been around for over 50 years, and it is one of the most comfortable bars you’ll ever want to go to. Every second Saturday of the month they host the Roadhouse Rumble Bike and Car Show, which allows

you to show off your ride and vote for the People’s Choice Award. This event features live music and a BBQ. If the bar gets a little crowded, there’s a large patio overlooking the parking lot with plenty of room

Friday night is Karaoke night, featuring a live DJ and dancing starting at around 8:00 p.m. Live bands play on other weekends and nights, so you never know when you’ll walk in and hear some great live music. If you get hungry riding around, they have a bar menu which features chicken strips, tamale bites, hot dogs and some awsome Road Wings. The beer is always ice cold, and they have a full bar for whatever else you want to drink. Either before heading to the mountains or after cruising all day this is the ideal place to stop and hang out for a while. From The Roadhouse there are several locations that are easy to reach in a couple of hours. Shaver Lake is an easy hour ride from there, as well as other locations such as Lost Lake, Prather, and Auberry. It’s easy to spend an entire day just cruising the back roads, going nowhere, and having fun doing it.

The Perfect PIT-STOP

Just remember, when you head up to that area, stop by The Roadhouse. It’s the perfect pit-stop for a summer day!The road I’m most familiar with is the one that leads to Manzanita Lake. Manzanita Lake is a small lake maintained by PG&E. There are several picnic sites here, the ducks and geese will keep you entertained,

Buckhorn this is the ideal place to break for a picnic and a cold one before going on your way. Leaving Manzanita and turning east you’ll travel a narrow road that will take you along a peaceful road to the shores of Bass Lake. From there you can either go around the lake or head back to Highway 41 toward home or Yosemite. The other road is the Scenic By-way, which is an amazing ride full of different scenery and swithchbacks. (Just a quick side note - there is only one gas station/store along this route, and I can’t guarantee when and if it will be open, so make sure the tank is full and you have snacks and drinks before you head up.)This road is not maintained in the winter, so if you go up in the early spring it may still be closed due to snow. If not, it’s worth the trip!

you’ll appreciate after leaving North Fork, as the oak-

covered hills slope down to the lake. Continue on and you’ll come to a small sign pointing to the Jesse Ross Cabin, the homeplace of one of Madera County’s

early 1900’s lining the walls, and the cabin has been

Ross was living there. Along the By-way there are

and plenty of side roads that are maintained enough for a slow ride. The Mile High Overlook gives you an excellent view of Mammoth Pool and the surrounding

the gas station/store that might or might not be open, and a few primitive campgrounds. Continue on past Mammoth and you’ll pass Jackass Meadows, then turn back down the hill until you come back to the highway. It’s a long loop, but it can be done in one day, and the scenery is worth it. Once back on Highway 41 you can either head up to Yosemite or back down to the valley. There are several restaurants and bars in the Oakhurst/Coarsegold area, many which are listed in our Central California

So, if you’re looking for a great place to ride to on a warm spring day, head up north on Highway 41 and see what’s waiting for you!
