Howdy Folks! While browsing the internet, I found a site that offers a cool service. It's called MotoStays, which is a new business that offers motorcycle riders homes to other motorcycle riders. In order to stay for free at someone's home, you have to offer your home for free to other riders as well. Both riders and hosts can post reivews and ratings of each other to encourage respect and friendliness throughout the MotoStays community.

MotoStays is not completely free; there is a membership fee of $49.95 per year. Once you've paid the membership fee, you can take advantage of MotoStays' free room and board for the entire year. Coverage is mostly within the United States, but there are places listed in Canada, Europe, and Asia. The more riders who participate in it, the more free places motorcycle riders have to choose from. This reminds me of a movie where two women exchanged homes for the Christmas hoiday.. I remember thinking how awesome that would be but I'm not sure I would feel comfortable with strangers staying in my home. They would have to know how to care for all our animals for sure! Visit them online at www.motostays.com.

July is the month that marks our country’s celebration of Independence. Americans celebrate the birth of America and every

veteran that has served to protect those freedoms our founding fathers put on a historic piece of paper known as the Constitution of the United States.

There are a lot of motorcycles that have themes and custom paint jobs, but none more special than those that take on a tribute to America’s best… our Armed Forces. That’s why Allen Burchell chose to honor Navy Seal Chris Kyle for his 2015 Harley-Davidson Custom Road Glide; Asphalt Assassin, the American Sniper Tribute Motorcycle.

Burchell wanted his bike to show tribute to our brave service men and women. So when the time came to do this build, he got with his long-time builder buddies from the Bike Exchange (BX Custom Designs); Steve Hardy, Ric Greene, and Tripp Kerby. More inspiration for the build came after Burchell read a best-selling autobiography, American Sniper, written by Chris Kyle, the Navy Seal who is the most lethal sniper in American history (The book was also made into the movie, American Sniper). Allen was awed by Chris Kyle’s personal sacrifice and acts of heroism while performing his duties overseas.

The Bike Exchange guys had a camo paint theme in mind and the paint colors came to Burchell in the form of a football teams uniform where one of the team’s colors were black/grey camo with red interlaced. Chris Fox of Fox Custom Paint out of North Carolina hit the tins with his magic touch and did a phenomenal job. The rest, as they say, is history. The bike is winning shows everywhere starting with Best of Show at Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation bike show in Hendersonville, TN.

Burchell states. “This build was truly to honor our fallen heroes and…It’s truly homage to him (Chris Kyle) and to all veterans.”

Getting to chat with Lee Greenwood after he sang God Bless the USA, we also got hang out with Taya Kyle, Chris Kyle’s wife, during a recent visit to the Coca Cola 600 in Charlotte, NC, my wife and I explained to her what was going on the cover for our July edition. Needless to say she excited to see the issue and ask for a copy as soon as it hit the stands. “Thank you for doing this”, Taya said. “Tell Allen I said thank you, too.” I told her that Allen would have humbly replied, “No…thank you, it was my honor.”

God bless our troops and God bless this great Country of ours.

Carving the Cumberlands at the Tennessee H.O.G.

Rally

By the Mag Man, Randy Gracy

Hot weather and lots of rain did not deter the Harley-Davidson riders as

they came to middle Tennessee for the 2015 Tennessee State Hog Rally. Charlie Daniels and Three Dog Night headlined the evenings’ events. There were many rides for both males and females and for all different riding levels. Several dealerships from Tennessee took the rides by the horns and made them their own.

Vendor row at the Putnam County Fairgrounds was the place to be to see the vendors or even participate in some of the motorcycle contests. H.O.G. members were able to go on rides to different destinations like a drag strip in Buffalo Valley or the AMA Pro Hillclimb Championship.

H.O.G. members got to enjoy a town that is well known now, to open their arms to motorcycle riders of any kind. Cookeville,

Tennessee has beautiful scenery while riding the many country roads and the town folk are just downright hospitable. It’s no wonder Cookeville is officially known as “The Heart of Tennessee”.

Over 125 people participated in the Bosom Buddies Cancer Ride event, raising hundreds

of dollars for those in need, fighting the fight against cancer. Cullman County Fairgrounds in Alabama hosted the registration site and riders came from all over on two, three and four wheels. Riders gathered under the pavilion for announcements, ride information and a prayer for a safe ride.

The riders rode out, escorted by Cullman’s finest officers and the Blue Knights Alabama VIII, for a scenic country ride through the back roads of Vinemont, Lacon, Morgan County and Cullman. Returning to the pavilion, everyone enjoyed raffles, auctions and a great BBQ meal.

One hundred percent of all proceeds from this fundraiser as well as other donations go directly to deserving cancer patients in the Cullman County area. No matter what type cancer they may have, funds can be used to cover everything from groceries to utility bills while they continue their battle. A board of directors who accept no money for their time or effort oversees the foundation. All money is donated and raised by the board of directors, volunteers and citizens of Cullman County. The 2015 Tellico Bike Rally was an astounding success with newly renovated Mountain Saloon. Some

folks worried about the weatherman calling for severe thunderstorms all mid-week through the weekend, but no such storms arrived and the party was on!

With bands like 10lb Biscuit, Phoenix Riding and JD Cable with his Empty Bottle Band, the crowd stayed entertained the entire weekend. The shallow creek offered comfort for the sunny days, as several enjoyed laying out in it while others did a little tubing. The bike games were crazy and the bike show brought out some outstanding creations. The wobble wagon made trips across the creek to the far side campground bringing folks over to the Mountain Saloon and the 15+ vendors.

The 3rd Annual Southern Biker Magazine Catch & Release Fishing Tournament had over 20 contestants who vied for those coveted championship trophies. Defending champion Shannon Goodrich and her husband, Calvin, weren’t able to make it, so the field was wide open. All money donated to the event went to the Combat Casualty Relief Fund in support of the Tennessee National Guardsmen who are injured in combat.

Next year’s event promises more stuff and huge entertainment so remember to come early, get a good spot and commence… Getting Tellico’d!

We were offered the opportunity to pick up and review the new 2015 Hyosung ST7 Deluxe for a month or

so from Hyosung Motors USA out of Atlanta (S&T Motors). Garrett Wong, Hyosung’s U.S. Sales Coordinator, and his staff, set us up with their fully loaded ST7 Deluxe to take to the beaches of Panama City Beach during Thunder Beach Motorcycle Rally and to ride around the scenic roads of the Tennessee Smoky Mountains. The ST7 Deluxe has the extra equipment already installed on it that would cost hundreds more if you added them after your purchase (full windshield, floorboards, leather saddlebags, lots of chrome accents, a passenger backrest with carrier, heal/toe shifter, highway bars and more).

Our first ride was along the Gulf Coast beaches and the motorcycle was a delightful surprise, to say the least. Quick acceleration and a comfortable ride were just two of many accolades I give this motorcycle. Built with a liquid cooled DOHC 8-valve V-Twin 680cc fuel injected engine, it produces a 63 HP punch with the best power to weight ratio in the 650- 950cc cruiser class (weighing in at only 538 pounds).

Riding around various stops during Thunder Beach, several people asked what this motorcycle was. Explaining the specifics of the ST7 Deluxe, a couple of accomplished riders tested it out and both explained they were also surprised with the light weight, balance, acceleration and styling it has.

Bringing it back to Tennessee, we loaded the roomy saddlebags with carpet inside for an all day trip. Testing it out on the mountains of the Cherohala Skyway (5400 feet at top), the ST7 never missed a beat with enough power and torque to conquer the mountain and keep up with the largest motorcycles in the group. With its four piston front brake calipers, the motorcycle had plenty of stopping power going into tight corners, all while adding 230 pounds of rider on it. It has a very relaxed riding position that allowed me to ride all day without a backrest.

I would put this motorcycle in the top of its class for performance, balance and overall enjoyment of the ride. If you are in the market for a cruiser with power, great styling and performance, whether you are a beginner or accomplished rider, add this one to your test drive before you buy.

Thousands upon thousands of motorcycle riders came to the Gulf Shores of Panama City Beach,

FL, and enjoyed one heck of a good time at the 2015 Spring Thunder Beach Rally. I mean the weather could not have been nicer; sunshine and an average temperature of 75 degrees every day. The city and surrounding area enjoyed a HUGE boost in the economy as people partook of all that was available; all of the Thunder Beach activities and all of its different venues like Club LaVela, Runaway Island, Hammerhead Fred’s, Sharky’s, the Wicked Wheel and Pier Park. That’s not to even mention dining, rides all over the area and the time spent on the white sandy beaches.

Harley-Davidson of Panama City Beach had a huge vendor section as did Frank Brown Park where a lot of the concerts and activities were held. At the Harley-Davidson dealership, Gracie was announced as the official puppy for Thunder Beach. Yes, she seems to get all of the attention.

Concerts took place from one corner of the beach to the other with entertainers like, Mustang Sally, Jasmine Cain, Buck Wild, Trezz Hombres, Highway To Hell and Cowboy, a Kid Rock Tribute. There were several bike shows in the area but none more prominent than the Baddest Bagger Biker Show and the Thunder Beach Best of the Beach Custom Bike Show. What a tremendous display of fabrication and paint. The most emotional winner to receive a trophy was a 13 year old boy named Aaron Wolfe. It was his first motorcycle he had ever built and he took home a trophy; great passion and desire from someone so young. It’s times like these I just tear up and enjoy the moment.

We are proud to announce the Autumn Thunder Beach Best of the Beach Bike Show will sponsored and hosted by Southern Biker Magazine. We are currently looking at some awesome custom trophies for the event, so make your plans to attend, enter and win! We will have multiple classes from metric, V-Twin, rat bikes to the most custom bikes on the planet.

It was a great time to ride the Gulf Coast at Panama City Beach and the Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew are already awaiting our return October 21st-25th. Remember when buying merchandise and going to events, if it doesn’t say Thunder Beach, it’s not the real thing. See you there!

An Old West Town Built for Bikers, that’s what Angel City is. It’s 130 acres of pure fun in the middle of

Georgia just off I-75 near Unadilla, created by Wayne and Ralph Smith, that hosts two major events a year. Angel City came alive during the 3rd Weekend in April. The old west town comes complete with saloons, two restaurants and a general store.

This past April we had Big Engine, Hired Guns from Atlanta, ELY, Roadhouse Atlanta, Joe Santana and other great talents that graced the stage in the huge pavilion that also hosted the old school bike games, salute to veterans and POW’s. We also had a bike show put on by Abate of Georgia and The Ives Brothers Globe of Death. We can’t forget about our friend Torch Fire Performer that always puts on an amazing show and has become a fixture here at Angel City.

With an all-inclusive price for the weekend from Thursday to Sunday, you didn’t need to go anywhere else. Good food, great live music and more fun than one can imagine. They keep the action going all weekend and have fun out in the public areas in town. It’s full of fun, and the Rangers who police the event don’t let anyone get too carried away, and it make it a super time had by all.

If you have never been to Angel City for their Rallies you owe it yourself to do so. Their fall October 7-11 event marks their

Summer RidingRiding in the Rain

Let's face it; if you ride in the summer especially in

the south, you're going to experience some rain. The good news is at least the rain is warm, but soggy boots and water running down your back can still be distracting. Keep your riding gear handy; make sure it's breathable for hot weather. Creating an inner sauna with your riding gear isn't fun either. It may keep the water from the outside out, but you'll create your own rivers of sweat. Whenever possible, get to your gear before you get wet because it's not a lot of fun putting it on in the rain. Weather apps are great and a lot of times you can skirt weather if you pay attention. But sometimes, you're going to get caught in it and you have to just keep riding. Whenever possible, put on a high visibility vest or jacket.

Here are some things to remember. Depending upon the intensity of the

rain, adjust your speed accordingly. Whenever the road is wet, it's always a good idea to SLOW DOWN! Make sure there's enough room between you and other bikes and vehicles. Your stopping power has just decreased exponentially. If you do have to pull over, do it slow and steady. Don't make quick moves and make sure there is enough room on the shoulder to do it safely. If you're able to just stay slow and steady even if there's standing water on the road, your bike will bring you through. Don't go so slow that your

www.roarmotorcycles.com

Kathy TollesonCEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

bike becomes unsteady and hard to handle but make sure you don't go too fast and hydroplane. Remember every painted line on the road has now become slick as ice. All of the oil and gas especially in the center of your lane is being brought to the surface. In Florida, we call it black ice.

Brake gently, applying both your front and back brakes. Make sure you don't make

quick stops unless you are avoiding an accident. And then pump your front and rear brakes, don't just lock them up. And in the midst of all that information, stay as relaxed as you can. Getting too tense will affect your reflexes and create fatigue. It's also good to treat visors or goggles with something that helps deflect the rain. Every little bit helps.

Enjoy your Summer Riding! Ride SAFE and ROAR!!!

After nearly 10 years, the Myrtle Beach Bike Week is beginning to make a

comeback. The area businesses are smiling a lot these days as the motorcycle riders are beginning to return to the South Carolina beach shores and pump in hundreds of thousands of dollars into the economy.

Bringing in top acts like Charlie Daniels, Travis Tritt, Big Engine, the Kentucky Headhunters and… the organizers of the events all over the area are smiling and welcoming in everyone. Suck-Bang-Blow has been a stable point for all of the motorcycle action in the area along with Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson. Other venues like the Speedway, Barefoot Landing, Spokes & Bones Saloon, House of Blues, the Beaver Bar and others all hosted events, vendors and entertainers for

30- Southern Biker Magazine July, 2015

I don't have to tell any of our Southern Biker friends that summer hit the southeast early

this year, and hit us hard. The summer brought us a quick heat wave, and with the summer heat, brings longer hours. With the longer hours, brings more bikes out later in the day. Anyone hanging out in Tennessee, Georgia or anywhere in the southeast in July knows that weekends can not only bring days in the 90's, but also weekend nights with late sunsets, and rides ending into the late evening hours. With the longer days and rides ending into the later hours coupled with the 90 degree heat increases the opportunities to hang out with friends at restaurants, bars and festivals, which always brings the desire to grab a beer or a cold drink. The hotter it gets, the better this sounds. But with the heat, adult beverages bring danger to bikers every summer. According to the US Department of Transportation, nearly 60% of all motorcycle accidents occur at night. These numbers spike in the summer due to the longer days and the number of organized rides which occur every weekend. Fatalities in motorcycle accidents also go up drastically when the sun goes down, specifically in the summer. The greatest change in statistics occur when you couple summer nights with the social aspects which we routinely associate with summer motorcycle events. Of course, we are talking about alcohol. According to the US Dept. of Transportation, in 2013 motorcycle riders killed in traffic crashes at night were almost four times more likely to have BAC levels of 0.08 percent or higher. This was (46%) higher than those killed during the day. When you put together long summer days, and riders heading home at night after social events, bikers stand a stronger chance at becoming a statistic when they mix alcohol and riding. When looking at these sobering statistics, you would think these numbers would then point you in the direction that the younger and inexperienced riders are the driving factor. Yet, you may be surprised, that when looking at fatal accidents in which alcohol was a contributing factor, riders aged 40 to 44, registered a close second to riders in their early 20's. This shows that experience does not keep you safe on a bike when you mix riding with alcohol. As summer keeps going, Steelhorse Law looks forward to seeing all of our Southern Biker friends at events all over the Southeast. Whether it is hanging out at bike nights in Chattanooga, Cartersville or Myrtle Beach, or rides in Atlanta, Knoxville or cities in between, we look forward to seeing all of our friends arrive safely, and get home the same way. When you are planning your events this summer, please be safe and remember that riding after drinking isn't worth the risks. We want to see our Southern Biker friends around for many more riding seasons to come.
