Hey Folks! As bike season ramps up, please stay alert and pay attention to what's going on around you. We all take chances every time we throw our leg over our motorcycle or trike, but sometimes drivers/riders make judgment errors that may increase our chances of being involved in an accident. Others on the road who don't ride may not be aware of how many more motorcycles are on the road traveling beside them, stopped in front of them or behind. We may be in their blind spot or their attention is focused elsewhere, like a screaming child, or texting/talking on the phone. It's a full time job to look out for obstacles that may present themselves at the most inopportune times. Driving under the influence is the violation that

gets to me more than anything (besides drivers texting). If you enjoy a few drinks, don't get on your motorcycle or in your car and drive. Wait until you are sober to drive. It's not worth taking someone else's life. People think, "It won't happen to me", but it does How tragic it would be to know you are responsible for someone else's loss of life or limb. As some of you know, we've had our accident when a driver pulled out in front of us and we made a sudden stop (I stopped when I struck my husband's bike from the rear as he veered to avoid the vehicle). I suffered 6 fractured ribs, a brain concussion, partially collapsed lung, knee cap road rash, torn rotator cuff and more. I was unconscious for 2 hours and don't recall the accident at all. The driver never stopped.

Just last month, our friend Chris Cooper lost a friend (Jaime Hernandez of Ocala, FL) while Jaime and his passenger girlfriend were stopped at a traffic signal, first in line and the truck traveling behind them never stopped, never applied the brakes before impact. Jaime and his girlfriend were pronounced dead at the scene. The front of the truck looked like it hit a telephone pole head on, the imapct was so severe. Life ended in an instant for these two people because someone chose to get behind the wheel and drive intoxicated. We want to enjoy the fruits of our labor!

Please don't drink and drive/ride. Watch your rear view mirrors for others that may not see you stopped at the light.

To start the 74th Daytona Beach Bike Week, the Daytona Regional

Chamber of Commerce and the Bike Week Festival Task Force hosted the official press conference and luncheon for everything happening during the event. Janet Kersey, Executive Vice President of the DRCC, noted a packed room, welcomed everyone and touted the events VIPs who were present.

Steve Piehl of Harley-Davidson touched on several things including a change in the air for Harley-Davidson. Absent on the banners on Main Street and around town was the word “Biker” which was replaced with the word “Riders” (Daytona Beach Welcomes Riders). It changed in recognition of everyone who rides motorcycles.

This year’s 74th Daytona 200 sanctioned by American Sportbike

Racing Association featured 600cc motorcycles. DIS President Joie Chitwood said, “With a competitive purse of $175,000 and a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona at stake, riders will have plenty of incentive as they compete for a coveted Daytona victory.” And compete they did. The race was packed with intense racing as seen from the number of red flags that came out due to crashes starting with lap one. Thirteen riders would eventually leave the field with a DNF due to crashes or mechanical failures.

Meen Yamaha’s Josh Herrin even came back from going off the course and deep into the field to charge back hard and even taking the lead on the last lap. But last year’s winner, TOBC Racing’s Danny Eslick, defended his Daytona 200 title by taking the checkered flag with a final banking draft past Herrin and winning by.08 seconds. Project Mayday’s Geoff May of Project took third.

Multiple restarts had consequences for front runners Tuned Racing’s Steve Rapp and Westside Performances’ Stefano Mesa as they went backwards in the running order. Racers began the season with a double event on the flat track at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. In the first event

Dodge Bros Suzuki’s Stevie Bonsey earned his first Daytona Flat Track win as he raced tire to tire with the defending Grand National Champion, Montgomeryville Cycle Center Honda rider Jared Mees. Both riders did not fare well in the second main event finishing 18th and 11th respectively. Zanotti Racing’s Kenny Coolbeth Jr. followed up his 3rd place finish in the first main event with a checkered flag and the points lead leaving DIS. Logos for 23rd Biketoberfest & 75th Bike Week Unveiled

Unveiled by Shawn Abbatessa, Director of Market Development for the Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau was the logo for the upcoming annual 23rd Daytona Beach Biketoberfest scheduled for October 15th - 18th, 2015.

There was also a competition sponsored by Budweiser for designing the 75th Daytona Bike Week logo. Mid Florida Sportswear was chosen as the winning design and the new logo for next year was unveiled by artist Joe Erker and representatives John Koberg & Jim Gallager. Official sponsors for next year’s Bike Week were also announced which include; Harley-Davidson, Budweiser, AMSOIL, Geico, Daytona Beach Hilton, RAM Trucks, Russ Brown Attorneys and the HOG Radio.

It started with a little cold and rain but temperatures quickly went into the 80s and close to 90 degrees one day

as the Southern Biker Magazine Road Crew road into the 74th Annual Daytona Bike Week that took full swings and hit homeruns every day. It was a noticeable difference just driving in on the Saturday beginning the week as we saw more motorcycles on the road than ever before for that same time in the past. The Daytona 200 Race Week and Supercross were in town and helped kick off the event that begins the year’s motorcycle season.

All of the banners and signs read “Welcome Riders” instead of “Welcome Bikers” and giving a noticeable more welcoming sign for everyone that rides. It was a definite hit with American and foreign riders as we ran into more riders from other countries than we have before as well. Kristin, Uncle Phil Ciufo and I met up with Bibi & Danilo from Rome, Italy who spoke some English. Hanging out nearly the entire time, we made it work. It’s amazing how motorcycle riding is also an international language of sorts.

Our host spot for this year’s events was the Legendary Boothill Saloon on Main Street. Owner Karin Gehris and Al Yeaton rolled out the red carpet and rocked the entire weekend. With entertainment from the mild to the wild all day every day, Boothill Saloon was packed with event goers and folks having a great time. The Official Daytona Bike Week Ladies Bike Show presented by Southern Biker Magazine was a HUGE hit (see article in this issue). There were so many people there, that on two separate occasions, they had to shut down Main Street for no traffic because there were so many people going to all that Main Street had to offer.

Main Street, Daytona International Speedway, Destination Harley-Davidson, Riverfront Park Beach Street area and others all soaked up much needed revenue from the 500,000 riders that came to enjoy this 2015 Bike Week. All of the surrounding campgrounds and saloon places rocked with entertainment and events as well; Boothill Saloon Outpost, Broken Spoke Saloon, Iron Horse Saloon, Pub44, Saints & Sinners Pub, the Cabbage Patch and more. Musical guests from country to rock, from pop to metal were playing everywhere.

We were there for 10 great days and soaking up the sun and fun that is Daytona Bike Week. Biketoberfest is just around the corner so make your plans to be there. Next year’s Bike Week will be the event’s historic 75th Anniversary. Do not miss this event! Many, many top entertainers will be there, many special events and several new additions will be happening. The only way to see all of the action is to come and enjoy everything Daytona Beach has to offer during this historic event. See you there!

Coming through the Daytona International Speedway tunnel and

seeing the Supercross course in the DIS infield still gives me goose bumps. The field for this year’s championship seems to be one-sided as it looks like Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey is headed for his second Supercross title. But a crash and an injury could change everything in blink of an eye.

Dungey however stayed true to form and took his first 2015 Daytona Supercross title. Taking over the lead after lap five, Dungey dominated and never looked back. GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac was marled

back in the pack but raced hard through the field to finish second in front of Yoshimura Suzuki rookie Blake Baggett, his first podium of the season. “It feels good to get my first-ever Daytona win,” said Dungey. “The bigger picture is obviously focusing on the championship, but to get the win feels even better. “ After running near the front, TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed went down during the race and could never get back to challenge.

With just five races remaining, it does appear Dungey has the champion-ship well in hand.

Racing ATVs when I was younger, I couldn’t help but love the

fact that ATV Pro Racing would be coming to the Daytona International Speedway. The inaugural FLY Racing ATV Supercross (ATVSX) took place during the 74th Annual Daytona Bike Week and it was not disappointing.

Baldwin Motorsports Honda’s John Natalie won against 16 other riders in the main event while riding a near flawless race. The entire race was intense and came down to Natalie and last year’s runnerup in the points, Joel Hetrick who would wind up finishing second on Natlie’s rear wheel. But I was actually rooting from a Tennessee boy to pull it out, but Natalie was on his game. Union City, TN native Joe Byrd finished fourth and showed he will be a force to contend with for the championship.

“I am extremely pumped right now. It’s Daytona. This is the land of speed,” said Natalie. “I am the first one to ever win an ATV race at Daytona. Nothing will ever change that.” Watching him in Victory Lane was an awesome sight. I am very hopeful this will be the beginning race for each year and something extra for me to look forward to each Daytona Bike Week.

I've always wanted

to ride in other countries besides the USA and Canada.

This winter I had an amazing opportunity. A few columns ago I wrote about the new 650cc Kawasaki but hadn't had a chance to test ride it. That all changed in January.

Rodney and I were invited by an organization called Go To Nations to come in and do some leadership training in Northern Thailand. We worked our butts off but were going to have Friday afternoon off before we left for Singapore on Saturday.

A bunch of us decided to rent some bikes. I was a little concerned if I would find something that would fit me. Well, guess what was waiting for me. You got it, the 650cc that I've wanted to test ride - and with less than 100 miles on it. It had arrived in the country two days before our ride.

We were in Chaing Rai, which is a large city so I definitely got to test out braking and maneuverability. Then we got out on a beautiful mountain road between Thailand and Burma. What a ride! I was impressed with the speed, handling and power. At five

foot tall with boots that had a good heel, I was flat footed. The standard bars had too much of a reach for me and I definitely felt my shoulders the next morning. I understand there are two other sizes to help with a better fit, just like we did for the WildKaT.

I hope that it will be a first of many nations that I get to ride in before my motorcycle is replaced by my heavenly chariot. And I definitely can recommend Kawasaki's new 650cc for women. Just make sure your dealer fits it to you.

Holding the event on the last Friday of Bike Week and putting it on Main Street at

the Legendary Boothill Saloon, the Official Daytona Bike Week Ladies Ride-In Bike Show had its largest turnout ever. The ladies seem to roll in from everywhere on every bike model known with two and three wheels. What an awesome event. Boothill’s staff was ready as the bikes filled the tent and then around the entire outside. There, the bikes were seen by hundreds of Boothill customers and Main Street event goers.

With celebrity judges like speed record holder and custom fabricator Jody Perewitz, Kathy Tolleson, the CEO of ROAR Motorcycles, Rick & Tina Beauregard from Cyclone Cycles and Roscoe from American Biker Radio, the judging was tough but winners and placers were decided. Victor Lima from Tampa Bay Music Network emceed the event and did a tremendous job keeping the participants and onlookers entertained and informed. Vicki Sanfelipo was live on Road Hawgs Radio and they posted their largest ever listening audience with over 31,000 listeners during the bike show, and entered her bike in the show as well.

Uncle Phil Ciufo helped with every phase of the event and Sharon Bernhard from the Daytona Beach CVB came to help out with event registration. Recently diagnosed with breast cancer, she wanted to make sure she contributed to this event in some way and she made a positive impact. She’s also an inspiration to several others and has already connected with several of our friends who have been going through this terrible disease.

All of the ladies cheered on each other as winners and place finishers were announced. The location was perfect and the event was spectacular. Southern Biker Magazine is so proud to be able to bring this much needed event to the world. When I started this event two years ago, I had been searching for a bike show that catered to women and allowed them to showcase their beautiful motorcycles, but found none. Each bike at this show was truly a work of art and unique. Each bike had special touches that represented a memory or feeling that these women wanted to tell their story. Some of the ladies had never entered their bike in a show before and were a little apprehensive about what to expect. Once they arrived, they saw how awesome it was to be a part of

Hurricane Grill & WingsA great new wing place just

opened on Lovell Road in Knoxville, TN called Hurricane Grill & Wings. It's located across I-40 from Knoxville H-D West. They offer over 35 different flavors. The neat thing about it is the sauce bar where you can sample before you order.

Big Mike started with clam fritters: clams with corn, bacon and spices, batter fried, served with sweet red chili sauce @ $8.99. He finished with Yuengling beer battered fish and chips @ $11.99. For me, I enjoyed the garlic parmesan fries @ $5.99. Next comes the flavor sampler, four flavors @ $20.99. My options were Coco Loco (habanero & coconut), Buffalo, Blackened Cajun Rub and Fire & Ice (buffalo horseradish). The sauces are listed on the menu with a heat rating.

They are open every day and I look forward to trying more flavors when my tongue stops burning.

Guinness Chicken.

Recipe Ingredients:2 Tbs. vegetable oil1 medium onion, chopped2 large cloves garlic, minced1 whole chicken (3-4 lbs), cut into serving pieces5 carrots, peeled & chopped2 parsnips, peeled & chopped 1 tsp. dried thyme leaves3/4 tsp. salt1/2 tsp. black pepper3/4 cup Guinness Stout1/2 lb. fresh button mushrooms3/4 cup frozen peasCooking Directions:Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat until hot. Add onion and garlic; cook and stir 3 minutes or until tender. Remove vegetables with slotted spoon to small bowl.

Arrange chicken in single layer in skillet. Cook over medium-high heat 5 minutes per side or until lightly browned.

Add onion, garlic, carrots, parsnips, thyme, salt and pepper to skillet. Pour stout over chicken and vegetables. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer 35 minutes.

Add mushrooms and peas to skillet. Cover; cook 10 minutes.

Uncover skillet; increase heat to medium. Cook 10 minutes or until sauce is slightly reduced and chicken is no longer pink in center.

Makes 4 servings.

Storm Sonders and Jon Hopp have developed what would seem to be the

most affordable eBike on the planet. The reason I write about this product is that it could break into the scooter and small motorcycle market for those that use them to commute short distances. For $600 it would seem to even be an extra purchase for those in need of this type transportation.

Weighing in at only 45 pounds and a 350-watt gear motor, the Sonder eBike can travel 30 to 50 miles and up to 20mph with a single charge. A full 36-volt lithium ion battery charge will only take 90 minutes and is even rechargeable using solar power. The battery looks like a silver coffee thermos and slots into a waterproof housing in the frame.

Equipped to handle all kinds of terrain, this bike will undoubtedly be a well used item. Options are already being added for those that would like to customize theirs

In the past 5 years, there has been a 28% increase in female bike owners in the United States. More and more

women are deciding to change their view from the back of a helmet to the open road. This number proves that women are getting past the opinions of others, the stereotypes ("nice girls don't ride") and the physical requirements to enjoy the freedom that only a biker knows. More history has been made this year as well. In the 90+ year history The AMA, the nationally recognized organization has just elected their first woman board chair, Maggie McNally-Bradshaw. This only further shows that women who ride are becoming an important part of the industry. Bike manufacturers are also taking notice of the growing trend, and their strength in the economy. Honda stresses the importance of proper fit for a woman rider and it shows with models like the CTX700, which features lower seat height and center of gravity. Harley-Davidson hasn't missed this opportunity either. They are currently leading the pack with having more sales to women than all of their competitors combined. Local HD dealerships offer "Garage Parties" which are designed for women to learn the basics on the bike from tip to tail, how to fit the bike to you and even how to lift a bike that's on its side. Some upcoming local Garage Parties are on 5/30 at Tifton H-D in Tifton, GA and 8/8 at Mountain Creek H-d in Dalton, GA. Local HOGS in South Carolina like Myrtle Beach Harley and Thunder Creek in Tennessee are focusing on their women members as well. So, this all sounds great, and you want to start your journey, but where? Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses can be found all over the USA and they are a great jumping off point. Visit www.MSF-USA.org to find a class that is being offered near you. Approximately 1/3 of all graduates of the class are female and the classes offer all the necessary steps you need before hitting the road. You will get familiarized with the basics of operating a motorcycle and the more you ride, the more proficient you will become. Remember, male or female—everyone starts at the beginning. Proper equipment and a bike that fits you and your riding style are essential. Shop around, sit on all of the bikes, and try on different helmets and jackets until you find the right fit and style for you. Community is a big part of the biker lifestyle and there are many national and regional women-only bike clubs to choose from to enhance the experience. It allows you to feed your passion for riding with other like-minded, strong women who share your outlook. There are some things to expect when beginning your ride. You are going to drop the bike at least once. You may hear from others that it is dangerous and the crash stories may be abundant. And, of course, everyone out there will offer advice whether you asked for it or not. Your confidence may sink and it may be easy to become frustrated. Sticking with it will have a pay off greater than you first imagined. Studies have discovered that 74% of women riders believe their lives have improved since they started riding. They say they live happier lives that are more fulfilling and less stressful. They now have more confidence in themselves, their appearance, and their destinies. Going by the way side are the stereotypes that moms, sisters, wives and grandmas can't ride and they are being replaced with the image of a strong, empowered woman who creates her own destiny. Take it from Queen Elizabeth, who herself rode and worked on bikes in World War II, having your own ride can catapult you into other big moves in your life. So get out there. Have fun, be safe and enjoy your ride.
