Hello! We hope this finds you well and taking care of yourself and others as outside temperatures hover around 95 degrees. Not many people can handle this heat much less the high humidity. Our outside animals struggle to avoid overheating, especially the horses. They are sweating just standing in the shade. This heat makes us think about staying hydrated when riding in high temperatures. There are many items available that can help keep us from overheating such as cool vests and cool pads to go inside your helmet. Soak them in cool water for

a period of time, wring out the excess water and you are good to go. Even our little dog Gracie has a doggie cool vest to wear when she rides with us on the motorcycles. She loves to ride with us in her tank bag that has magnetized flaps to keep it securely on the gas tank and won't scratch the paint job. She has her little doggles and a little helmet. I swear she thinks she is a celebrity with fans taking her photo as they pass her on the road. I think she likes the attention. We have to keep her cool on the bike and the cool vest is a great find. I use a sheepskin seat cover because my seat bakes in the sun while parked and the cover keeps it from burning my behind plus it alows air to flow through. I also installed a "crotch cooler" to protect my inside thighs from the heat my bike engine produces, especially when stopped in traffic or stop lights. It is a leather bib-like flap that has a cut out in the center and fits through the seat connection. It has also been a life saver. I like to be comfortable when I ride and am always looking for new products to try. If you have any unique products to stay cool, let me know what they are.

Ignite Straight Six Project Radical K1600 Customs from JapanBy The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

Following their successful R nine T custom builds from four top bike builders, BMW Motorrad came out with

“Ignite Straight Six.” And this year’s bike was not so easily customized. They brought out their big K1600GTL and presented it to two of the world’s best in Japan to customize motorcycles; Kenji Nagai of Ken’s Factory and Keiji Kawakita of Hot-Dock Custom-Cycles.

They would both have to take the fully loaded touring 2015 BMW K1600GTL and make it into a work of motorcycle art. “Instead of making a luxury tourer even more comfortable, I made it bit edgier. For me, customizing is part of life”, said Kenji. He settled in for a thinner, lower, raked-out look and began his creation he named, Ken’s Factory Special.

Keiji went in a totally opposite direction and focused more on making his creation match the name he chose; the Juggernaut. His design looks more Mad Max futuristic than anything else I’ve seen. Looking like something our military would add rockets, missiles and high velocity Gatling guns to, Keiji took his inspiration from an old car picture. “I found an old photograph of the cockpit of a convertible that looked like something from the near future, and I got the idea of making a bike that had

that kind of atmospheric feel…Even when I finished, I still wasn’t really sure whether the work was complete. But that’s the thing about customizing, isn’t it?”

Both bikes only had the factory engine and frame from the original K1600GTL on them that would distinguish it as a BMW. Everything else was imagination and fabrication. Keiji stated, “I just dove straight in without doing a single image sketch. Some things turn out better than you imagined. That’s what’s fascinating about customizing, what gives it depth.”

I can’t wait to see what BMW Motorrad follows up with these two outrageous builds.

More information on the project Ignite Straight Six is available at: http://ignite6.jp/en/

The helmet laws for each state vary as most of us know. Currently, 19 states and the

District of Columbia have laws requiring all motorcyclists to wear a helmet. There are 28 states that only require some riders to wear a helmet and three have no helmet laws at all.

I have been a firm believer that the right of an individual to wear or not to wear a helmet is by their choice and to some degree, still do. However, since my wife and I had an accident riding both of our motorcycles back in 2011, my views changed…in just a split second.

We were traveling staggered style at night doing about 25-30 mph approaching an intersection, when a car with no lights on darted out in front of us. I locked up my brakes and went to the right side of the lane, but my wife didn’t see the car as quickly as I had. She locked her brakes up but hit me from behind and we went down. She went head first onto the asphalt while wearing a DOT helmet. She suffered multiple injuries including a brain injury (her DOT helmet warped on impact). She survived the accident and has gained total health back, but

To Wear or Not to Wear…the Helmet Law

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

without her DOT helmet, she would not have survived, even at that low rate of speed.

In the past, many states had universal helmet laws, thanks to pressure from the federal government. In 1966, Congress passed the Highway Safety Act which required states to enact helmet use laws in order to qualify for certain federal safety programs and highway construction funds. By the 70’s, almost all the states had universal motorcycle helmet laws. In 1976, states successfully lobbied Congress to stop the Department of Transportation from assessing financial penalties on states without helmet laws. Since 1996, there has been a ban on federal funds to enact mandatory helmet laws from being used to lobby state and local governments for required helmet laws. A recent revision to a proposed amendment will continue this ban if the bill is passed by the Senate.

My wife and I now wear approved carbon fiber helmets no matter what state we are riding. It’s cool to ride without a helmet, but if I live longer by using a helmet, then by all means, lets!

Here are general motorcycle helmet laws by state:Alabama: All RidersAlaska: Under 18Arizona: Under 18Arkansas: Under 21California: All RidersColorado: Under 18Connecticut: Under 18Delaware: Under 19Florida: Under 21Georgia: All RidersHawaii: Under 18Idaho: Under 18Illinois: Not RequiredIndiana: Under 18Iowa: Not RequiredKansas: Under 18Kentucky: Under 21Louisiana: All RidersMaine: Under 18Maryland: All RidersMassachusetts: All RidersMichigan: Under 21Minnesota: Under 18Mississippi: All RidersMissouri: All RidersMontana: Under 18Nebraska: All RidersNevada: All RidersNew Hampshire: Not RequiredNew Jersey: All RidersNew Mexico: Under 18New York: All RidersNorth Carolina: All RidersNorth Dakota: Under 18Ohio: 17 and UnderOklahoma: Under 18Oregon: All RidersPennsylvania: Under 21Rhode Island: Under 21South Carolina: Under 21South Dakota: Under 18Tennessee: All RidersTexas: 21 and UnderUtah: Under 18Vermont: All RidersVirginia: All RidersWashington: All RidersWest Virginia: All RidersWisconsin: Under 18Wyoming: Under 18

The 10th Anniversary of the FACES Poker Run brought out local riders

to support The National Craniofacial Association, www.faces-cranio.org as they rode for children with facial disorders. The host location for the event was Thundercreek Harley-Davidson in Chattanooga, TN. Riders enjoyed several stops along the route to get their poker hands filled, like the Texas Roadhouse and getting a photo with Andy Armadillo. Chattanooga area motorycle riders raised hundreds of dollars for the charity.

Fit to ROAR

Riding and Core Strength

When motorcyclists are riding they use their whole body, however, there are three major muscles that do most of the work. These muscles are the stomach, forearms and inner thigh. In this last decade one of the primary health issues in men and women over 25 is back and lower back problems. If you can get your core area strong and healthy, most, if not all, back problems go away. As your core area strength increases, you will find that you rely less on your arms to support your body while riding. Our abdominal muscles are key for position and posture when riding. Here are a few simple exercises to help you build-up and keep that core strength.

Sit-Ups - Target upper abdominals

Start by lying flat on your back, knees bent. Place your hands palm down on the front of your pelvis, slowly sit up, sliding your hands down the front of your legs and just over your knee caps, then slowly lower back to the floor. Repeat this until you can feel it in your abdominals. Try to work up to 25 repetitions for 3 sets.

Chair Leg Raises - Target middle abdominals

I like to first begin these leg raises by sitting on a chair. This will take most of the pressure off of the back area. First, sit down on your chair, put your hands behind you and grab the back of the bottoms of the chair, and lean back half way by lying down. You should be balancing on your buttocks. Lift your legs forward toward your chest as far as you can. Do as many times as you can. Try to work up to 25 repetitions for 3 sets.

Leg Raises - Target lower abdominals

Start by lying flat on your back, keeping your spine on the floor. Raise your legs about a foot and a half off the floor and hold them there for 3 seconds. Then gently lower your legs to the floor. Repeat this until you can feel it in your lower abdominals. Work toward 10 repetitions for 2 sets.

www.roarmotorcycles.com

Kathy TollesonCEO ROAR Motorcycles, Inc.

Just by doing these simple exercises you will begin to feel stronger and in more control of your body and of your bike. You will enjoy your time while riding your bike so much more. Now just take a couple of minutes and try each one of these exercises. In the beginning you might only be able to do a few repetitions but don't get discouraged, just keep working your way up and before you know it you will be doing 2 or 3 sets with ease.

I was out with some friends of mine and came across a small Honda that was riding with regular motorcycles. I asked

William how was the ride and why is he riding it thru the Cherohala Skyway and the Dragon. He simply said (with enthusiasm I might add), “You will never have as much fun as you can on curves until you ride this machine!” After a few days I ask him if we could go ride and I’d let him ride my Harley. He accepted.

To say I had a blast is a gross understatement. Son Of A Gun…that thing is a rocket and I felt as one with the motorcycle and road. At first, the sharp curves kinda scared me with the light weight and power on the throttle response, but the 12” wide tires were gripping, the brakes were performing smartly and the fun…ohhhhh, the FUN never stopped. I out rode him through the curves and a couple times had to wait on him.

With a 125cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine, this baby can flat out get it. With factory speed of 65-70 mph, I got William’s bike up to 76 mph (he has a few mods on it). After dismounting, he asked what I thought. I said plainly, “I’m getting one!” Not only can it be a fun ride, but with its low cost, it can also be that daily commuter motorcycle you’ve been looking for. My buddies at the motorcycle rallies all want something to ride around on since most don’t allow 4wheelers, ATVs or RTVs. Well, here is that answer as well. I can just see our SB Road Crew now; the Road Dawg, Bill Grant rolling up with Mo on the back or Frank Pate and Bryan Lambert rushing around to take pics at events and rallies on one of these.

2015 Honda Grom, It’s All About Fun

By The Mag Man, Randy Gracy

This Grom is a modern day machine that can be used for all types of riding. It’s the perfect start-up machine for getting into motorcycles and also economical and affordable enough to be considered as an everyday commuter. It comes equipped, not stripped; projector-style headlight and LED taillights, a soft and comfortable leather seat, a multi-functional digital instrument panel with speedometer, odometer, tachometer, A&B trip meters, fuel gauge, clock, low/high beam indicator and especially the inverted hydraulic front fork suspension which is the same one being used on some of Honda’s top sports bikes. The 4-speed Honda transmission has smooth changes and just enough torque to give you that speed and control you’d expect on a Honda.

The Grom is vastly becoming the play bike of choice since its introduction in 2014. And the upgrades and modifications are limitless as seen in some of these photos. It comes with a one-year, unlimited-mileage limited warranty with the option for extended coverage courtesy of a Honda Protection Plan. That alone is worth a second look to buy this machine.

Four Marines and one sailor were killed in Chattanooga, Tennessee by a radical muslim on July 16,

2015. The war on terrorism HAS come to America. Hundreds of proud Americans came to honor these brave soldiers and rally to support their families during the Pray for Chattanooga Ride where they arrived on motorcycles and cars to ride as groups to each site where the shootings took place.

Many riders came from out of town to attend this ride. The crowd’s mood was somber and humble yet glad to be coming together for this ride. Everyone there was wearing, holding and flying their Red, White and Blue. As everyone was lining up, police sirens began to blow and Chattanooga Officers and State Troopers began blocking the intersection right next to the ride. A few minutes later, 15 plus motorcycle officers were escorting the body of Randall Smith, the fifth soldier that was killed. The mood became even more somber.

As the father of two Marine soldiers, I lived in Chattanooga for many years. The city is rich with history. My wife lived and worked in Chattanooga for several years and her mother still lives there. I went to college, raised a family, coached little league and made lifelong friends, but never would I have thought something like this was possible. The city, the state of Tennessee and the entire country are coming together, united to overcome this tragedy. While many of our politicians wait in the wings to see if it is politically correct to say or do anything, a city is doing what it knows best…coming together for each other in the face of tyranny against Americans, against Chattanoogans. This city is ‘NOOGA STRONG!

After going through all of the photos, maybe it’s just me, but Holy Cow, there was a huge party in Cookeville, Tennessee and it had Junebug Boogie written all over it.

Herbert & Amber Clark know how to throw a rally and they are never ones to disappoint their folks. Top name entertainers like Mustang Sally, Jasmine Cain, Aunt Betty, the Atomic Dogs and Moccasin Creek kept everyone wanting more.

With the weather as hot as it was, a little shower was a welcome relief and the party never seemed to end from the Wednesday start to Sunday afternoon. A new Mr & Ms Junebug were crowned as were many contest and motorcycle game winners. Their vendors row seems to grow even larger each year with more and more things to buy, eat and wear. The Southern Biker Road Crew was well represented with the Road Dawg Bill Grant & the Duchess of Stix, Monique leading the way. Frank Pate & Biker Bob from USA Biker Parties got some great shots for the magazine.

I think the funniest thing during this event was Amber’s surprise birthday for Herbert. Tied up in a chair and blindfolded in front of everyone, the large cake was brought to the stage and out popped…oh my, Bill & Gary (see the photos). Just his reaction alone was enough to announce, “Let the Party Commence”.

What a great time for everyone and a huge thank you to a great crowd. The Boogie Too is just around the corner so pack your trailers, tents and trucks and come on! It’s also Herbert and Amber’s fourth anniversary. The gag gifts for them from all you rally folks get funnier every year.

Gordon Edward Slade, 67, of Knoxville, TN passed away on January 31, 2015

leaving many of us wishing we could have said good-bye to an everlasting friend who cherished life to the fullest. He was a “no holds barred” type of guy who pulled no punches with his words, but he would always be there to help anyone in need.

Gordon was in the United States Army and was a proud veteran combat soldier of the Vietnam War. He retired from Tennessee Valley Authority in May 2003 after 34 years of service. During Gordon’s burial ceremony, the flag was flown at half mast,

21-gun salute, taps was played and Annetha, his wife, was presented with the American flag in honor of Gordon’s service to our country. Many people

joined as we said our final farewells and rode with him on his last ride here on earth.

For Gordon and his motorcycle friends (Mitch, Dave, Big Ed, Little Ed, Jeff, and others) on Thursday nights it was always a lot of smiles and laughter at the favorite hangout, the Quaker Steak & Lube. Gordon was someone special among his countless number of friends.

Editor’s note: I met Gordon on one of those bike nights a long time ago. And every time we met at events, bike nights and even at a restaurant, Gordon always had a huge smile and something nice to say about me, my wife or the magazine. His smile was contagious. I will miss my friend dearly.

1947-2015, Gordon Slade Honored

Within and an hour’s ride from the World’s Most Famous Beach there are

all sorts of cool rides, places to see and things to do. From sunrise to sunset and late night there is so much going on, in and around Daytona Beach. Most everyone knows about the two NASCAR Races, Bike Week and Biketoberfest each year. Even with Mickey just an hour away it’s the perfect spot to visit or live.

Get on your steel horse and ride down Tomoka Farms Road (S.R. 415), stop in at Shenandoah Stables for a trail ride, the old west way on the four-legged variety. Don’t stop there as just a short ride away is Lake Ashby and it’s amazingly beautiful boardwalk, walking trails and camping areas. You can head north up scenic A1A past Flagler and Marine Land to visit St.

Augustine, the nation’s oldest city. Most of us on bikes know Wednesday night is Bike Night on Main Street at Boot Hill Saloon and Main Street Station for cheap bottled beer and great live music. Take an afternoon ride out A1A to Ponce Inlet and climb Florida’s tallest lighthouse. Then head to one of the great waterfront restaurants in the area for a bite to eat and a cold beverage. Lots of area beaches and places to swim, relax, fish and go boating in the area. Many other great rides and places along the way to have fun, grab a bite to eat and listen to your favorite genre of music.

Blaze PizzaI know pizza is found on just

about every corner, but Blaze pizza will give you a bang for a buck. They're located at the corner of Peters Road & Kingston Pike in Knoxville, TN. For $7.25 you get a 14" pizza with all the toppings you want. It's a build-a-pizza that they can fast fire in the oven and get to you in three minutes.

The crust is thin but not like a cracker. You have three sauces to choose from or combine: pesto, red, white and six different cheeses to cover up with. Over eight different meats, pick one or all. My favorite is turkey meatball, Italian sausage, ham and grilled chicken. For the veggies, there's over 20 choices or load up all of them. Grab a seat and 180 seconds later your pie is ready.

Hours are 11am - 11pm weekly. You can call (865) 219-1221 or get it to go at www.blazepizza.com. A great deal for the dollar. For More Information:

As I was sitting outside this weekend at a Harley Dealership in North Georgia listening to a great

lineup of female southern rock bands, it was hard to ignore that the dog days of summer are here, and anyone who has been outside in the southeast the last few weeks knows, this summer came with a vengeance. Yet, while hanging out with our two-wheeled friends, I was really proud to see how many came to the event without sacrificing their safety in an attempt to cool off a little on the ride. Serious injuries on motorcycles increase nearly 33% in the summer. While some of these numbers can be attributed to more vacations and longer rides to rallies, others can be directly linked to falling into the trap of not wearing the proper gear in efforts to stay cool. So, how can you stay safe and stay cool at the same time? First, take into account where you are going that day. If you are heading to a rally or an event that is going to be outdoors, either dress in layers, or bring a change of clothes and/or shoes. The difference of an injury to your feet or arms when riding in flip flops and a tank top, versus wearing boots and a jacket can mean walking away from an accident instead of tending to road rash and broken bones. Also, utilize your saddle bags or storage on your bike. If you don't have either, bring a backpack or helmet bag. If you don't have one, you can't make an excuse.... Go to our website and shoot us an email or call our office. We will send you a bag to keep you safe immediately. When talking about gear, take a good accounting of what you have to help you on hot summer days We buy extra gear every year to keep us warm in the winter, so there is no reason to not do the same in the summer. Look into sunblockers for your helmet, cooling vests to allow you to stay safe, but not over heat in the southern sun, or even cooling neck wraps and bandanas that have been developed specifically with bikers in mind. Also, remember when you are sweating, you need to replenish. As you all know from growing up in the South, keeping yourself hydrated is extremely important. Many companies have developed drink holders and hydration systes with the biker in mind.In the South, whether you are in Florida, hanging in Myrtle Beach or even driving around Tennessee or Georgia, summer storms are not only common, but can be severe and dangerous. Make sure to check the weather before you leave, and have a plan in the event you need to get off the road. Summer storms can be very dangerous for a motorcyclist. Visibility can decrease drastically in a matter of seconds. And remember, when your visibility decreases, so does the visibility of the tractor trailer or SUV that is sharing the road with you. If you get stuck in a summer storm, get off the road. Whether you find a dry overpass or stop for a quick bite to eat or bottle of water.Summer has a couple months left, and we look forward to seeing all of our Southern Biker friends at events all over the Southeast. Whether we are hanging out in Helen or Sturgis in August, Knoxville in September or Fall Bike Week in Myrtle Beach, Steelhorse needs all of our friends to arrive safe and healthy. So be careful this summer, and make sure you don't take your safety for granted. And as always, if you have any questions, your friends at Steelhorse Law are only a phone call away. It is a true, all-original classic, the Harley-Davidson Dual Glide Police Special. This one is a rare breed for any collector. From 1958-1960, Police Officers were

fighting with the change from hand to foot shifting while in traffic pursuits, and a challenge to Harley-Davidson ensued for another hand-shifter. Harley-Davidson responded with this now-limited edition collector.

The year was 1960. Unemployment was 5.5, “The Andy Griffith Show,” “My Three Sons,” and “The Flintstones” were all making their television debut, while “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” managed to climb to the top of the music charts. Those were the days…the real good ole days. And just like this equally-nostalgic and rare Harley-Davidson, they just don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

It was during this time that a young kid from 1944, with a craze for life, attended college in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, while working at Standard Candy Company making minimum wage at $1.15 per hour. He moved on to other jobs and experience, but for the next ten years, Phil Chamblee climbed his way into several hard-working positions and eventually landed at Mack Truck Company. For five years he worked in the diesel industry, and it was during this time that he got bit by the dream. He bought his first motorcycle three days before he learned to ride and fell three times learning to do so. The year was 1970. He hasn’t stopped riding.

That era began a huge thrust for custom bike builders, and while Phil Chamblee credits Bobby Appleton with the city’s first custom shop on Lebanon Road, Chamblee was a Nashville pioneer in being the first full-time custom shop in 1972. C&S Cycle was born: 1600 square foot in a 40’x40’ on Nashville’s west side. Phil Chamblee was off to build another dream. In 1973, “Mr. Knuckle,” a ’47 Knucklead, was customized by C&S Cycle with electric start and earning the prestigious “Best of” at Daytona Beach’s infamous “Rat Hole.” This led to many equally exciting custom builds and adventures, including a step into nitro in 1983, with a ’73 Sportster custom build drag racer. This bike carried Phil Chamblee and crew to ten National records toward their 1985 HDRA National Championship and a host of additional accolades and awards. Bike and driver were awarded “Hot Dragster Champion,” with Phil

A Family Tradition

Chamblee smoking the vast competition as “Crew Chief of the Year.” His nearly twenty-year experience and knowledge in the motorcycle industry, at this point, was catapulted into fulfilling more dreams.

In 1985 Sanders Harley-Davidson and Marine was selling out and Phil Chamblee jumped at the purchase of his Harley-Davidson franchise, which would lead to the building and relocation of his business as an official dealer. In 1992, 4600 Delaware Avenue, Nashville, became the home of C&S Harley-Davidson, with facilities that garnered the 1992 Tennessee State Architecture Design Award and was used in many ads, music videos, photo shoots and events to follow. In 1993 Dealer News awarded C&S Harley-Davidson the number one dealer in their Top 100 with multiple awards from Harley-Davidson following for years.

Ironically, the thing about dreams is that they are contagious. Phil Chamblee’s son, Curt, was none-the-less another dreamer looking on. He started his journey as a seven-year-old janitor, followed by all the necessary steps of building and understanding loyal customer service and well-managed business direction. He climbed the steps from General Merchandising to Parts Associate to Service Technician to Sales Associate to Sales Manager, where he met a dream of his own.

In the economical down-turn of 2007, Curt Chamblee envisioned a broader spectrum of possibilities that could lead to better business and more stability through the more widely encompassing Motorsports industry. C&S Harley-Davidson was sold during this time and became Bost Harley-Davidson. Curt Chamblee remained as General Sales Manager for Bost, until they closed in 2011, all-the-while envisioning and shaping his dream for his own niche in Motorsports. That dream melted vintage with contemporary, the old and the new, a home for yesterday with a taste of tomorrow, and it was

reminiscent of the idealism he saw in a picturesque purchase he made in 1989, when he traded for this 1960 Harley-Davidson Dual Glide Police Special and made it his own.

The economy was screaming for change, the future was reaching for hope, and Curt Chamblee’s new, risky goals combined motorcycle industry with automobile and all-terrain vehicles, and endless possibilities, which were broadened by stepping away from the limitations of a franchise. He wanted to be The Mega Mecca of Motorsports. He was ready to contribute to the family dream, under the carefully-guided direction of Phil Chamblee, in hopes that he could build for his own future generations.

October 26, 2013 is the date Curt Chamblee’s heritage business and new dream came together – the grand opening of Highway 12 Motorsports – 22,000 square feet on four and a half acres located on prime real estate along 5110 Ashland City Highway, just northwest of Nashville. Sales, Parts, Service and gear for automobiles and motorcycles of various eras, combined with all-terrain vehicles and a huge display of vintage collectibles were splashed across the premises. Hundreds of loyal biker friends, from years in the motorcycle industry, and new acquaintances of all kinds, converged to show local support and welcome the change. Curt Chamblee was off and running his own dream. And that is a dream that continues daily, with a kid from 2004 looking on. Regardless of Braeden Chamblee’s direction in life, it’s safe to say that the knowledge and experience he gleans from his family heritage and future dreams will stand the test of time – a testament to a rare and formidable reminiscence, but also forward-looking, direction. Who knows what will happen when he finds his own dream on his dad’s 1960 Harley-Davidson Dual Glide Police Special. Whatever the case, his real good ole days are just beginning.

Highway 12 Motorsports is a launching pad for a new wave of Motorsports enthusiasts, but it is also a front porch for the hundreds of loyal friends that have made it a home away from home and the Mega Mecca of Motorsports.
