Hello Folks, This has been a busy time at the Gracy household. The last month has been nonstop with traveling to Daytona Beach for Biketoberfest and then Panama City for Thunder Beach. Both were great events that we love attending, whether it's meeting new motorcycle friends, enjoying the beach and riding at the beach. It doesn't get much better and it's hard to get motivated to pack when it's time to go home. Then we turned around and traveled to Nashville for the Dierks Bentley Miles and Music event. Read more about these events in this issue. We visited my family in Huntsville, AL and Blanche, TN after Nashville and loved seeing everyone. We traveled 2,100

miles total last month. It's difficult to leave them every time. This time, I returned with a cold unfortunately, and it's taken the wind out of my sails. As we age, bouncing back from an illness gets more and more tricky.

One thing we love is visitors to our ranch. We had a houseful with Rick Adams and Barbara Johnson who rode here in 30 degree weather from middle TN to help us with the TN National Guard Toy Run. We appreciate all our helpers at this event including Susan Redmon, Larry Saffles, Chris Cooper and Joe Ball. We couldn't have had such a successful event without their help. Our awesome sponsors played a huge part in the event's success, as well. See the article in this issue.

Our next visitors were two new friends who drove down from Ottawa, Canada, bringing their bikes to ride the rest of the way to Orlando, FL and meet their wives who flew in. Ed O'Meara (a Blue Knight) and his friend François rode the Dragon, the Cherohala Skyway and a few other beautiful routes which are not too far from our house. They had a blast! We look forward to their return visit. We love our motorcycle friends and thankful for the opportunity to provide great memories.

During the cold months, many of us still ride our motorcycles and many of us hunt, play and work

in the dirt. Well, I’m here to tell you that Honda has made the ultimate workhorse and universal side-by-side of all time and proclaimed it their flagship for UTVs. The new 2016 Honda Pioneer 1000 and 1000-5 tops all classes of side-by-sides except maybe racing. The 1000 has room for three and the 1000-5 has room for five. I drove the 1000-5 Deluxe.

Living on a ranch, my wife and I are constantly needing a muscle machine to do nearly everything from hauling to pulling to riding to town when snow and ice storms make the roads impassable. After seeing this brut at Southern Honda Powersports, I had to take it for “a ride”. I’ve ridden just about everything known to man and this thing is not only the 4x4 heavy duty RTV, but it’s also the Cadillac of its class. It’s Honda’s new-from-the-ground-up, no-compromise leader in the full-size multipurpose SxS category.

Walking up to my friend’s 1000-5 Deluxe, I immediately noticed that it’s heavy duty and solidly built from the frame up, loaded with a brand new engine and chassis. It’s the most powerful Honda UTV they have ever made. Built in the USA at the Timmonsville,

South Carolina plant, these new units house a 77-horsepower, in-line, twin cylinder, Unicam 999cc engine that is complimented with the industry’s only six-speed fully automatic, beltless, dual clutch transmission (DCT). Speed and torque are not options on this model. There are more of both on this model than you will ever use.

Roaring through trails and across pastures, this SxS holds itself to the ground in turns and on rough terrain. We came across a huge downed tree and Bob pulled out his tow strap, wrapped that tree, put it in 4WD and “BAM”, tree moved out of the way with ease. Going through a deep creek was no problem either as the air intake is mounted high under the hood which also gives this machine very deep growl when you hit the gas.

Every Pioneer 1000 model can carry up to 1000 pounds in the cargo bed and has a massive 2000-pound towing capacity. The suspension is an independent double-wishbone front and rear with 10.55 inches of travel up front and 10 inches of travel in the rear. The five-person Pioneer 1000-5 also features a convertible bed with Honda’s exclusive QuickFlip seating and auto-leveling rear suspension. This

excellent feature will stabilize handling or level the unit when hauling a heavy cargo load. The decked-out 1000-5 Deluxe also has 14-inch aluminum wheels, 27-inch radial tires, LED headlights and electric power steering.

This machine is just what a person needs to do everything from work, to play or just taking the wife for an enjoyable ride

through the countryside. I really liked the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. For those that prefer the manual shifting, Honda offers standard and sport modes. You can select 2WD and 4WD, high/low sub transmission and front and rear differential locks that assist in the distribution of torque and power. I’ve

never been quite so pleased with a new ATV, UTV or motorcycle than I was with this one. It seems Honda put a lot of thought into this one before putting it on the market.

Honda already has many, many options and attachments to make this SxS the most versatile machine to ever come along and not be surpassed in the near future. Yes, I hope Santa will bring me one for Christmas!

The 2015 Autumn Thunder Beach Rally roared in with the sound of the famous wrestler, Rick Flair: “Woooooo”. Thousands of motorcycles

converged to the Gulf Coast to be a part of the “Friendliest Bike Rally in the country”. The weather could not have been nicer with not a drop of rain and the rally goers enjoyed a full week of sun, surf and everything that was Thunder Beach.

Our Southern Biker Road Crew members were visible at all the venues; Frank Brown Park, PCB Harley-Davidson, the Shops at Edgewater, Boardwalk Beach Resort, Hammerhead Fred’s, Sharky’s, the Wicked Wheel and Pier Park. We also hit some of our favorite night spots at Buster Beer & Bait, Ms Newbie’s, Pineapple Willys and Billy’s Oyster Bar while giving out lots of free SBMag swag.

Rally attendees enjoyed the numerous Thunder Beach events including Ms. Thunder Beach bikini contest. It was definitely a huge task to name a winner but one was crowned the last night of the event. Our week was highlighted by the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show where over 60 motorcycles competed for the coveted custom crystal trophies, the hundreds of dollars in prizes and of course, the Thunder Beach Championship Belts!

The toughest class to judge was the Radical Class with fifteen entries. Over a thousand people came to view the entire roundabout of bikes on display. The huge crowd enjoyed seeing the bikes, talking with the bike owners about their bikes and watching the presentation of trophies. Our presenting sponsor, Bob McNally with LawBike.com was our “UFC Dana White” as he presented the Championship Belts to the winners and wrapped the belts around their waists. With hundreds of votes cast for People’s Choice, Curtis McCloud with his bootlegger custom received the largest number of votes. The loudest sound from the competitors and from the crowd came when the Best of Show was announced. With his undefeated Radical Custom, Jeff Daniels began yelling as if he was Rick Flair himself… ”Woooooooo!! Woooooo!! Woooooo!!” I believe Jeff came to be the champ. He will have to defend that title in Spring 2016 at Thunder Beach April 27-May 1 as we’ll be hosting the Best of Thunder Beach Bike Show and bringing in even more prizes and trophies for the title, Best of Thunder Beach.

And remember when buying merchandise and going to these Panama City events, if it doesn’t say Thunder Beach, it’s not the real thing. See you there!

Excited that October had rolled around, I looked forward to going back to my seemingly second home in the

sunshine state. This year was a little different than others as I packed my bags, threw them on the bike and headed to the fall east coast motorcycle Mecca known as Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach, Florida by myself (Kristin had to stay home and tend to magazine duties and the ranch). More than 100,000 motorcycle enthusiasts are estimated to have attended this four day event and many stayed for the entire week as I did. There were thousands of motorcyclists in Daytona Beach prior to the event even kicking off. Riders from all over the world visit every year as the numbers that attend Biketoberfest continues to grow. This year I was fortunate enough to get to spend some time with some of our great friends from England, Paul & Vicki Diamond.

Vendors and events were scheduled all over the area including Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson, the Daytona International Speedway, Beach Street, the Cacklebery Campground and more. There were entertainers from all music genres, fire breathers, bike shows, bikini contests and so much fascinating entertainment everywhere. Main Street was jumping at night as

motorcycles lined the entire stretch of both street sides and all types of entertainment could be found within walking distance for all to enjoy. One band, known as Hayfire, caught my attention performing music from years gone past to the present covering country to rock to blues and everything in between. They seem to have the sound that everyone loves.

I had time to visit with my good friend and owner of Zappi’s Italian Garden, Paul Zappitelli and enjoy several great Italian meals. My usual stop at Charlie Horse Restaurant for the “all you can eat crab legs” took place. Paul Diamond kept count and was simply amazed as I finished off twenty pounds of crab legs, topping my old record of fifteen and the restaurant’s record of nineteen pounds. Needless to say it was time for bed after eating that much.

I rode out to meet our Florida Representative, Bryan Lambert, at the home of the big Rooster, the Cacklebery Campground. I met up with family owners, Ron and Jen Williams and was impressed with the massive venue they have built in just two short years. It is complete with everything all the other venues have plus a go-cart track that you can challenge your friends to a good race. On the way back to the beach and Finn’s Beachside Pub, the shifter linkage broke on my motorcycle. That’s when I met up with Nick & Cindy Blanchard and their friend Ron Gospo. After we fixed it, I took the newly married couple and their friend to Finn’s. Cindy had never been to the beach and as we rode across the Flagler Beach Bridge, all three of them were ecstatic at the view. I seem to acquire new friends every time I come to Daytona.

Meeting up with Miguel Nin at Don Kiki Cigar Superstore, I got to proof our cigar ring and make plans for launching the new Southern Biker Magazine Cigar at the 75th Annual Daytona Bike Week. I also met with Jody Kinberger, owner of the Daytona Dream Inn to finalize plans to be our host hotel for Bike Week along with several beach and pool area events and giveaways for everyone that stays at his place during Bike Week 2016.


Racing at Daytona International Speedway American Sportbike Racing Association, Championship Cup Series and American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association all took their turns on the famous racing course putting on motorcycle racing at the Daytona International Speedway. Also going on was Team Hammer Advanced School who hosted their motorcycle racing school on the road course. Demo rides were available in the turn four front parking area by Suzuki, Indian, Victory, and Yamaha.

Media DayThe Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau hosted Media Day which included a number of dignitaries and VIPs. Shawn Abbatessa, Director of Market Development for Daytona Beach took the honor of presenting the speakers. Sponsors, motorcycle industry individuals, local law enforcement, city politicians and others spoke in regards to the upcoming event and hopeful for a great outcome.

I was so happy to see Sharon Bernhard back at work at the DB-CVB after some much needed personal time off. I also met some new media friends at the event; Debra and Bud Herman.

I met Draik Beauchamp in March of 2014 to interview and write an article

on him and his racing career. Little did I know that the little guy who started racing at five years old would shortly win championships and begin making a name for himself.

Draik lives with his father and stepmother, Kurt and Alicia Beauchamp in Knoxville, Tennessee. The family bases everything on their Christian faith and helping Draik achieve his goals in life. Having to race year-round makes it hard on school life, except Draik has been home schooled since sixth grade.

Now just 15 years old, this year Draik has been clocked at over 140 mph posting seven race victories and 33 podium finishes riding his #77 Suzuki Sv650 on his way to the Lightweight Twins Superstock Expert “National Challenge Series” championship and his #1 plate. Oh, I forgot to mention he also won five regional championships. “This has been my most successful year in road racing,” Draik said. “Racing is second nature to me. I don’t really care what their age is. I would really be pleased to be a professional road racer, being paid to go race.”

Racing at a race. It was from several of the racers and kid racers and parents wanting to recognize him for being so helpful to them. Great children are taught by great parents.

Draik has lofty goals which include racing Moto GP and winning a championship one day. As for the immediate future, I got it from a very reliable source (his dad Kurt) Draik will be moving up to challenge more experienced racers in the Pro MotoAmerica KTM RC390CUP series next year. We wish him all the best and support him where needed.

In order to race, funds have to be present to so. Draik runs his own commercial lawn mowing and odd-job business to help fund his race travel expenses. His 20 race sponsors help but when moving up and getting better, more are always helpful. The 9th Annual Tennessee National Guard Toy Run brought riders from around the

south east area and Airmen & Soldiers of the Tennessee National Guard to ride in support of children receiving care at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital at Christmastime. It was a nearly perfect day as the cold reminded everyone that winter is around the corner yet the sun came out to warm the day to about 62 degrees.

Registration began at Knoxville Harley-Davidson East as riders began to fall in line and prepare for a Tennessee River and country side ride. Escorted by Knox County Sheriff’s Office’s best; the Tango Squad, our feet never touched the ground until we arrived at our ending destination, Knoxville Harley-Davidson West. There the riders enjoyed fresh smoked BBQ, pork chicken and spicy bologna as Roy Dunmore with Dunmore Smokin’ who was there the night before smoking his tasty creations. The riders also kicked in funds on all the awesome donated auction items and nearly everyone received a door prize. Thank you to our very generous sponsors. And that age old question was answered… “Yep, Santa rides a motorcycle.”

Lots of toys and hundreds of dollars were raised to purchase more toys for the children and families who are in the hospital during Christmas. It just makes sense to help as none of us would want our children to be in the hospital during Christmas. But maybe we’ve helped make the hospital stay a little easier and when we deliver the toys near Christmas time, maybe ‘ol Santa himself will visit those children and put a smile on their face, at least for a day.

I’m grateful to be able to organize this ride for this great cause with some of our very own soldiers, after giving so much, who are giving back to their community. Kristin & I are so honored to host this event every year and look forward to next year’s 10th anniversary event. It will be the best one ever. “HUA” to all those of the TNNG, God Bless and Thank You!

While talking with Ricky Kelley, owner of Harley-Davidson of Columbia, who said the event sold

out in just six minutes, we realized we were in for a huge fundraising event. Beginning our day at Harley-Davidson of Columbia, my wife and I met with several Southern Biker Mag Road Crew members who were treated to VIP passes and an outstanding location to view the awesome concert line-up with our own table and chairs compete with wait service very close to the stage. Talking with several friends and meeting new ones, I met a very nice lady riding in the event for her first time; Commanding General of Fort Knox, Major General Peggy Combs. It was an honor to see her at the event and on a motorcycle too as she is the relieving Commander for my brother-in-law, Major General Jeff Smith. We then settled in and got ready for the ride.

Led by Dierks himself, hundreds of motorcycles roared off for an hour long trip from the dealership to the Ascend Amphitheater in downtown Nashville. The evening’s lineup included Brooke Eden, Thomas Rhett, Florida Georgia Line, Canaan Smith, Cole Swindell, and Cadillac Three. To end the night with bang, Dierks raised his performance level and brought down the house with the best performance we had ever seen. (A side note: Dierks’ band played for the four other big acts and they did it without rehearsing or a microphone check. That in itself was amazing since the band sounded and played as if they had been performing together for years.)

The event’s focus is to raise money to benefit Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. In the past nine years they raised over $3 million, so this year the organizers wanted to smash all other years totals. And

they did just that. At the end of the night, Dierks was joined by 10-year-old Children’s Hospital patient Dalton as the check was unveiled; $636,479. He was totally overjoyed and immediately signed the check to a huge applause and celebration from the thousands in attendance.

“You always want to make each year different and raise more money especially with it being the 10th anniversary,” said Dierks. “We had a killer lineup and moved over to the new Ascend Amphitheater, but I was completely shocked to see that first number when they flipped over the check… a six! A really big thanks to all the fans and friends who helped make it such a huge night.”

Sponsoring this event each year is just one of the biggest things we could help do for the children at Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital and those parents whose children are there and sometimes can’t afford to pay for large expenses that sometimes come with medical needs. Helping charities and people, especially children in need, is the reason we got involved with the Music & Miles for Kids event and we look forward to helping raise even more funds with Dierks and his event organizers for the next ten years and more.

Ten Considerations to Avoid a DUI during the Holiday Season

After successfully handling over 3,000 DUI cases, there are a few reoccurring themes on how folks run into trouble. This article's intent is to help you to

NOT need my services in the first place. The first recommendation for avoiding a DUI is not to put yourself in the situation in the first place (aka "Don't Drink and Drive"). Rest assured, not only can a DUI damage your reputation, your family life, lead to loss of employment, etc., it's also very dangerous business. Practically speaking, a $10-$60 cab ride can save you thousands!

Mistake #1: Think that it won't happen to me. There's a first time for everyone. Just because you've got away with it for the last 10 years, doesn't mean your luck will hold out another 10. In fact, it is often after folks "straighten up," they get a DUI. This is to say, sometimes people will begin to act "more responsibly" by drinking only 3-4 rather than 6-8. However, if pulled over, an admission to an officer that you have had 3-4 is sufficient "probable cause" to lead to your arrest and the night in jail. And remember, 90% of people pulled over tell the officer that they had "a couple" or "two" to drink. Such a statement is a surefire way to land yourself in jail for the evening.

2. "Belief" that a couple glasses of water or cup of coffee will make you alert or sober. Water or a cup of coffee doesn't make you sober, just more hydrated and drunk, or more awake and drunk. Time is the only way to truly sober up. Keep in mind that the old wive's tale that people use about a drink an hour is wrong. Everyone is different, but a closer approximation is roughly 1/2 a drink an hour for women and about 2/3 of a drink an hour for men.

3. "Belief" that if you get too drunk, then you will have the awareness to drive home. Most of us are smart folks until we have a couple too many drinks. The best solution is to get a ride, take a taxi, get an Uber on your way to go out for the evening. If you purposefully give yourself no other option other than to take another taxi home, then you prevent yourself from later in the evening rationalizing "driving only a short distance home," "not leaving your vehicle somewhere unsafe," or the embarrassment of "trying to get a ride back to my car tomorrow morning." Avoid the temptation when you've had too much to drink. Give yourself only one option to get home by not taking your personal vehicle out in the first place.

4. People often ask what should I tell an officer if he or she asks if I've had something to drink? Do I tell the truth? Although the author cannot recommend giving a false statement to an officer (possibly a crime), rest assured that ANY admission of drinking an alcoholic beverage will likely lead to the necessary "probable cause" that an officer needs for your arrest. You always have a right not to incriminate yourself.

5. Always be nice to officers. Cooperative doesn't mean you have to incriminate yourself, doesn't mean you have to do a field sobriety test and doesn't mean you have to give a blood or breath test, but simply being polite and being kind is more likely to lead to NOT being arrested, or at the very least, makes your case far more defendable down the road.

6. To blow or not to blow (to consent or not to consent to blood or breath testing): Refusing a test can lead to another charge and possible loss of license, although this is not an automatic action. Providing additional evidence will likely lead to a stronger case against you. When in doubt, it is your right to refuse a blood or breath test (or refuse a field sobriety test).

7. Won't they just get a search warrant if I try to refuse a chemical (breath or blood) test? Answer: They may or may not; however, there are certain procedural steps that must take place correctly and lawfully in order to get a valid search warrant. Consenting to a blood or breath test gives up most of your rights when it comes to defending your case later.

8. Make sure your headlights, taillights, running lights, reverse lights, blinkers, even your license plate lights are all in working order. Don't give law enforcement an additional reason to pull you over. Remember that registration sticker you got in the mail?---STOP READING NOW, and go stick it on your license plate, no seriously go stick it on now!! (but don't forget to come back and finish the article). I can't tell you how many clients have been pulled over for this very thing, and the sticker was in the glove box or on the kitchen table! There is no need to give law enforcement a perfectly valid reason to pull you over when you've potentially been drinking. While we are on the subject, don't forget your insurance card. I'm not your daddy, but it is a good idea to have all of these essential items all together in one place for easy access. In fact, officers often state that the suspected person appeared drunk because they "fumbled with their wallet," or "fumbled when trying to provide license, proof of insurance and registration."

9. Motorcycles. Although it is technically legal to have a drink, and for some of us, two drinks and drive a car, I do not recommend driving a motorcycle under any circumstances after any drinking. The response time necessary to ride a motorcycle is drastically reducced from that of a four-wheeled vehicle. Save your chrome, don't throw your leg over that bike if you've had ANYTHING to drink. Drinking and cruising is potentially a costly mistake, bringing harm to yourself, loved ones, and other drivers.

10. Plan, plan, plan. Arrange a ride at the beginning of the night, before your decision making is altered in any way Go ahead, call your favorite cab driver, download the Uber app - fill in the credit card info to make the ordering an Uber/Cab easier, less complicated and quicker later. Arrange for a sober ride in advance of your potentially impaired decision making...A cab is always cheaper than a DUI.

To recap, safety is essential. Always do the safe thing. It's cool to be safe, it's cool to wear a safety vest if it means not getting a DUI or run over. No one is going to make fun of you or think less of you for doing the right thing. Encourage others to do the right thing and Don't Drive Impaired. (By the way, driving impaired is illegal and less than drunk -- You don't have to be full drunk to be charged with DUI). The last thing any of us want to do is to spend our hard-earned holiday money we might otherwise spend on our families and loved ones on a DUI and a DUI attorney.
