As previously
mentioned, the end of
the year trip for CJHS is
coming soon. Mr. Cass
has planned a trip to the
St. Louis Zoo. To go on
this trip you must have 1
point or less. The day we
will be going on the trip is
May 21, 2014. On May
30th & June 3rd CJHS
Spring Fling will be taking
place. CJHS is a busy
place in May!
For CJHS and
other West Frankfort
schools, the end of the
school is coming quickly.
Each school in the West
Frankfort District will be
taking their end of the
year trips. For CJHS the
end of the year trip will
be coming soon! We will
be going to the St. Louis
Zoo. I think we are going
to have a lot of fun at
the zoo.
Since the end of
the school year is coming
up we all need to keep
our grades up. CJHS ex-
ams will be held on May
28th and 29th. I know
some people don’t like
school but why wouldn’t
you not like CJHS? We
have great teachers and
great kids here at CJHS.
As the school year comes
to an end, our teachers
and friends will be
missed over the summer.
This year the 8th
graders they will have a
graduation towards the
end of May. This will take
place on May 24th. On
May 22nd the CJHS Hon-
ors Night will be taking
place.

Summer Dress Code By Deanna Stinson
Warmer weather
has arrived. Summer is
practically right around
the corner. Students, not
all of them, but most of
them want to wear short
shorts and tank tops to
school because it is
warmer. However, some
people forget that there
is a dress code at school.
Mr. Cass said
that so far we have done
really good this year
when it comes to follow-
ing the dress code. Ac-
cording to our handbook,
the dress code says stu-
dents should always be
neat and clean. Rule #7
states that all students
clothing must cover them
from the collar bone to
the mid-thigh area. So
remember, next time you
pick out you outfit for
school, you need to be
following the dress code!
More informa-
tion can be
found in the
CJHS hand-
book.

Last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the CJHS Theater Class pre-
formed Annie at the Paschedag Auditorium. The school play was really
good. I just want to congratulate everybody that was in the play. I also
want to thank you all for representing our school that way. This play
showed other towns that CJHS is a good school.
My personal favorite part of the play was where Kaity Hixon
grabbed the baby doll’s head, ripped it off the doll, and then the head was
kicked around the stage. I was surprised that the dog did so well in the
play. I thought for sure that this part would go wrong. I thought the dog
was just going to sit there and look at her like that’s not my name. However, he didn’t! He got up and went
to “Annie.”
Overall the play was a success. Personally, I think that this play was the best play I have seen in
my life. Good job to everyone that participated. CJHS is proud of you!

By far the cutest celebrity couple right now would have to be Jay- Z and Beyonce. Jay Z and Beyonce
started dating more than 12 years ago, but they had a business relationship before they started dating. Busi-
ness is what got theses two together. However, Beyonce’s talent is what stood out most to Jay-Z. As time
went by their professional relationship went from business to romantic.
They started dating in 2003 because of a collaboration they did called Bonnie and Clyde. They have
been inseparable ever since. Life went on and they got married April 4, 2008. Following that they had a
baby girl which they named Blue Ivy Carter. She was born on January 27, 2012. Beyonce said in an interview
with Oprah that “I would not be the women I am today if I did not go home to that man and it gives me such
a foundation.” Then Jay-Z said, "You know what, I am very attracted to who makes me laugh and is that
charming. Really, I could be charmed by anyone. I am just a sticker for somebody that is charming.”
Beyonce and Jay-Z are now living their life in their $6.5 million mansion in New York, raising their
baby and recording music.

The spotlight teacher of this issue is Mr. Dial. He has been a teacher for nine years. Mr.
Dial previously taught at the Alternative High School in Anna before coming to CJHS.
Mr. Dial became a teacher because he remembers in 6th grade his teacher talking about be-
ing a teacher and he thought he could do it. His favorite subject
other than Math is Literature. His least favorite subject is Statis-
tics.
Mr. Dial’s biggest challenge being a teacher is dealing
with the frustration of students not trying their best. His inspira-
tion is people that get up every morning and go to work/school in-
stead of just staying in bed and giving up. Mr. Dial’s favorite singer
is Sammy Hagar. His favorite season is summer.

Here at CJHS the 8th grade spotlight student is Marah Elizabeth
Wilmore! Some of Marah’s hobbies include singing and acting. Her favorite
teacher is Mrs. Deason. She’s went West Frankfort school her whole life.
Marah’s favorite football team is the Wisconsin Green Bay Packers. Her fa-
vorite movie is Frozen because who doesn’t like Frozen!? One of her favorite
colors is Aqua Marine. McDonald’s and Subway is Marah’s favorite fast food
restaurants. As we all know, Marah is a very smart, talented girl. Her favor-
ite subject is literature with Mrs. Deason. Marah, being the hard worker that she is, helped build sets for
“Annie” over her spring break.

Macayla Bowers is a seventh grader here at CJHS. She was born on March 9, 2001 in Carbondale. Her
favorite food is spaghetti. Her favorite color is teal. Macayla plays softball and it’s her favorite sport. Her
favorite singer is Lorde and her favorite actress is Jennifer Aniston.
Macayla said her favorite animal is a sea turtle. Macayla also said that she
wants everyone to get along and be nice to each other. I hope you guys know
a little more about Macayla Bowers.

Super Heroes
have been a sign of hope
through the years for
kids of all ages and today
I will talk about four of
those amazing heroes.
They are Batman, Spider-
man, Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles, and The
Incredible Hulk.
Batman was origi-
nally a comic book before
it was turned into a movie
in 1966 and it turns 75
years
old this
year.
In my
opinion,
this
once
great
super
hero as become dark and
in turn less of a hero to
kids around the globe.
Our next super
hero is that of the Amaz-
ing Spiderman.
Now he is a
real American
hero fighting
those bad guys
whether they
are crazy ones
or just your
common crimi-
nal. This great super hero
also came out in comic
book form in 1963 and
since then we have seen
him in countless battles,
in multiple cartoons, video
games movies, and toys.
In my research, I have
learned that Spi-
derman is still
O.K. for children
everywhere.
This
brings us to the
Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles.
They are great super he-
roes and kids love them.
Their show first came on
in the year 1990 where
they have battled their
enemy Shredder more
times than not. These
crazy turtles just don’t
give up because they are
on a mission to stop this
evil doer from taking over
the world.
This brings us to
our last super hero and
even though he is last he
definitely not least.
Actually he is big-
ger than a truck.
Guess who I’m talk-
ing?! You are right
is the incredible
hulk. Over the
years, we have seen
him fight many peo-
ple but his biggest and
most recurring enemy is
the Abomination, who like
hulk was a failed experi-
ment. This super hero was
created in a lab in the
year 1962. Since then he
has been in countless bat-
tles against countless
enemies. This great hero
has been in multiple mov-
ies and a lot more TV
shows but he is truly a
great American super-
hero.
These are just a
few superheroes that
kids look up to. Each one
has been around for a
long time, and I can’t see
them going anywhere any-
time soon.

SpongeBob is a
fictional T.V. show that
was created for children’s
entertainment. Sponge-
Bob was created by Steve
Hillenburg. Hillenburg is
a former marine biologist
and a former science
teacher.
SpongeBob’s name
was going to be Sponge-
Boy but that name was all
ready legally owned by
someone else. Tom Kenny,
the man behind Sponge-
Bob’s voice in the show
says, “SpongeBob’s laugh
is meant to make viewers
think of the ocean.” Ac-
cording to SpongeBob’s
license, he was born on
July 14, 1986. However,
the cartoon did not air
until 1999.
For two years,
the creators of Sponge-
Bob stopped making new
episodes. Then the series
of SpongeBob returned in
2005. Ever since then
they only make one or two
episodes a year.
In my opinion
SpongeBob is the best
show ever. You can learn
so much about the ocean
and ocean life from
watching this show. Here
is a fun fact about
Spongebob. The woman
who is the voice of Plan-
tations’ wife is married to
the man who plays
SpongeBob’s voice? That’s
pretty weird. Go home
and watch SpongeBob!
Call of Duty Ghost is basically like any other Call of Duty but with aliens. The Single
Player Campaign is possibly the worst one yet. The story is that America is invaded by South
America because South America hacked America’s space missile weaponry. Why they do this? I don’t know
maybe they wanted to impress a lady they found in Wal-Mart. Anyway, now America is severely weakened so
they send in the Ghosts who are super sneaky elite soldiers. These soldiers apparently don’t really know that
they are ghosts. For example the first time your feet are on the ground and a gun is in your hands you go and
get yourself in a huge gun fight. You might even end up blowing up a chopper. So the Single Player Campaign is
just the same as all of the other Call of Duty’s. The only difference is that Call of Duty Ghost’s has a dog.
The Multiplayer Mode on Call of Duty Ghosts can be won by doing one thing; sitting in a corner and
snipe anyone who crosses your sight. The Alien Mode is better than Survival Mode that was in Modern Warfare
3, but Alien Mode in Call of Duty Ghost still falls short of Nazi zombie.
I would say that all in all Call of Duty Ghost is not fun at all. I would give the final rating for Call of
Duty Ghost a 5 out of 10. Personally, I would suggest you wait for it to be twenty dollars before purchasing
this game.

As you know, all
of the 8th graders will be
moving onto high school
soon. High school will be
very different than Jr.
High. A lot of people talk
about their high school
experiences being good
experiences. Many people
are afraid to go onto high
school, but there are also
a lot of people who are
excited.
High School is
different in many ways.
The building is much big-
ger, the classes are dif-
ferent, and there are
many more people. You
can obviously tell by look-
ing that the building is
bigger. At the high
school, you can be placed
in classes that have stu-
dents of all grade levels.
There are four grade lev-
els at the high school
they are freshman,
sophomore, junior, and
senior.
Freshman Orien-
tation was held on May 1st
at 6pm at FCHS. Mrs. Dill
from the high school held
the orientation. The ori-
entation helped 8th grad-
ers in many different
ways. They were able to
get to know the building,
it clarified a lot of things,
and even allowed upcom-
ing Freshman to get a
start on their classes. At
orientation, students
walked around the school
to get to know where the
classes will be next year
Students were also able
to ask questions as well.
I think that high
school will be scary at
first but will eventually
be a good experience for
all of us. High School
seems intimidating be-
cause it will be so differ-
ent. I do believe that
high school will be an en-
joyable time.
giant black alligator, and
crocodiles. They have zip

At Sea World
(which is also located in
Florida) they have two
roll coasters, one splash
ride, killer whales, sting
rays, dolphins, sea tur-
tles, gift shops, eagles,
one balled eagle, African
fish eagle, a possum, and
walruses.
Disney World is
also located in Florida. At
Downtown Disney they
have Lego Land, Candy
Florida is a good
vacation spot. I have been
to Florida twice. I plan to
go back in July. Most peo-
ple just think of Florida
as a place to lay on the
beach. However, there is
a lot of other stuff that
Florida has to offer.
Florida is the sec-
ond biggest cattle state,
second only Texas in the
U.S. They have a lot of
alligators. Orlando has a
place called Gaitorland.
They have white alliga-
tors, green alligators, a
Shop, and a Rainforest
Café.
Universe Studios
is located in Florida.
They have rollcoasters,
dinner places, water
rides, gift shops, and 3D
rides.
If you haven’t
made a trip to Florida
before you really need to
go. All of these places are
a lot of fun.

Hobby Grade Re-
mote Control’s are differ-
ent from the Remote Con-
trol’s you buy from places
like Target and Toys R
Us. Hobby Grade are
much more expensive. A
Hobby Grade RC can
range from $200 up to
$5,000. Sometimes the
prices can go even higher.
Hobby Grade are
much more durable and
are much faster than the
toy versions. I have one
that will go 65 mph and is
four wheel drive. The
Hobby Grade is custom-
izable were the others
are not. You can upgrade
them, you can buy LED’s
for them, tires, different
motors, and a lot more.
There are many
different brands of
Hobby Grade RC’s. One of
the best is Traxxas.
Traxxas has been around
for quit along time. They
have the world’s fastest
out of the box RC car; it
reaches speeds up to 100
in fewer than 5 seconds.
There are races all
around the world for
these RC’s. This is a really
fun hobby to be involved

In the NBA Play-
offs sixteen teams get
put in the playoffs. Those
teams get put into two
conferences called the
East and the West. Eight
teams are put into each
conference. Those teams
then get seeded from 1 to
8. They compete in a best
of 7 series to see who will
go to the next round. This
continues until there is a
champion. The last 2
years Miami Heat has won
the championship and I’m
sure they would like a 3rd.
The first round
matchups for the western
conference were 1 San
Antonio Spurs vs 8 Dallas
Mavericks, 2 Oklahoma
City Thunder vs 7 Mem-
phis Grizzlies, 3 Los An-
geles Clippers vs 6 Golden

4 Houston vs 5 Portland

that the Miami Heat will

Wrestling is a big
thing for my family and
me. I have five brothers
and they are all in Wres-
tling. I think it’s an amaz-
ing sport. I personally
compete in wresting along
side my brothers. I use to
be on a team but now that
I am entering high school
I am too old to compete
with the team that I have
been with.
As a girl, I still
have to wear the uni-
forms that the boys wear.
The only difference is
that I wear a shirt under
the uniform. In wrestling
a singlet and certain
shoes are required. You
have to wear a head gear
as well. Some people like
to wear knee pads be-
cause they don’t want to
get mat burns. I wear
knee pads because I get
mat burns all the time
from practicing without
knee pads. The majority
of the wrestlers that I
see are boys. Usually I
wrestle the boys. In my
weight group there are
only about three or four
girls.
While I was on a
team we traveled around
to different tournaments.
I have been to a lot of
tournaments. I have been
to Benton, Mt Vernon,
Carbondale, and Pinckney-
ville. At Pinckneyville I
took fourth place. I have
placed as high as third
place. I have met some
new people going to all
those away tournaments.
I have met Jimmy Hicks,
Chandler Bowling, Blaine
Riley, Emily, and Riley.
Jimmy is really good in
Wrestling. He has taken
first in just about all the
tournaments he has com-
peted in. Chandler is very
good too. He is fast and
strong and often gets
first place as well. Blaine
is very fast and always
wrestles hard. Blaine is
out for a little while right
now because at state he
messed his arm up. He is
out of Wrestling for a
little while. Emily is fast
and very good at wres-
tling. She has often won
first place at these tour-
naments. She was really
good. I see her every now
and then at tournaments.
Riley is good as well. She
has speed. I wrestle her
as well. I have learned a
lot from all the new peo-
ple I have met at the
tournaments.
Once I get to
high school I can try out
for the wrestling team.
Last year there was only
one girl on the wrestling
team at FCHS. I have
talked to some girls here
at CJHS and they are
interested in wrestling in
high
school
as
well.
Angel
Brown
said
she
wants
to join
wres-
tling
her
freshmen year. Cheyenne
Parkhill wants to join as
well. The girls I have
talked to have never been
in Wrestling before. I
told them it is always
good to try something
new.
I never thought I
like wrestling but I do a
lot. I always thought it is
going to take a lot of
practice to be the best. I
practice a lot but not as
much as I should. I really
enjoy the sport. If you
have never been in Wres-
tling before I suggest you
try it on next year! It is
an amazing sport.

CIY is a Christen
Concert that came to St.
Louis, Missouri. There
were a lot of things to do
at CIY. AT CIY you can
listen to music, watch a
comedy show, and there
is also a break time where
you go down to the stores
and buy stuff like t-
shirts, jackets and CD’s.
I attended CIY
this year for the first
time. The First Christen
Church and First Priority
both had a hand in getting
me there. In order to go
to the concert we had to
do a little fundraising.
The First Christian
Church sold BOGO cards
in order to fund this
event.
Before the con-
cert we were given a little
book that had papers at-
tached to it. Towards the
end of the concert, we
were told to fold that
extra paper into air-
planes. Before we actually
folded the airplanes, we
were encouraged to write
something that we
thought we were good at
on the airplanes. After
both of
these
things
were
done, we
threw
the air-
planes at
the band that was playing.
We were also encouraged
to make an airplane that
stated what our friends
were good at as well. We
were then allowed to
throw the airplane at our
friends. During this time,
there were a lot of air-
planes flying through the
air. I really enjoyed this
part of the concert.

Many people have
heard of the songs like “A
team”, “Give Me Love”,
and “Small Bump.” Did you
know that these songs
were written by Ed
Sheeran?
Ed was
born on Febru-
ary 17,1991.
Ed’s full name is
Edward Chris-
topher “Ed”
Sheeran. Ed
grew up in
Framlingham,
Suffolk. In
2008, Sheeran
moved to Lon-
don in hope of starting a
career in music.
In 2011, Ed’s tal-
ent grabbed the attention
of some important people,
such as Elton John and
Jamie Foxx. He later
signed a deal with
“Asylum Records”. Later
that year he released his
debut album “+”. This
album, contained the
songs “Lego
House”,
“Drunk”, “Kiss
Me”, Wake
Me Up” ,and
many others.
In 2012,
Sheeran went
on to win two
BRIT Awards.
He won one of
the awards
for “Best British Male”
and the other for “British
Breakthrough”.
Ed wrote the 1D
song, “Little Things ”and
he spent most of 2013
being the opening act for
Taylor Swift in her “Red”
tour.
So as you can see,
Ed Sheeran has made a
large impact in a short
time. If you are ever

head to E wing to spend
5 hours with my mom
and some other enter-

E wing is a wing
of Decatur correctional
that houses inmates
with babies (and their
babies), “caregiver” in-
mates who act as baby-
sitters for the babies,
and participants of the
Reunification program.
The Reunification pro-
gram, a program that
allows inmates ap-
proved to live on E wing
to have their children
on the unit, is what I’m
there for.
Saturday, April
19th we celebrated
Easter on E wing. There
were about 15 other
kids that day and
things were kind of
hectic. There were lots
of activities including a
bunny hop race that
stripped me of my dig-
nity when I came in
dead last (numerous
times) against mainly 8
year olds. Besides the
About twice a
month at approximately
6 in the morning my
grandpa and I drive 3
hours north to a town
that reeks of dog food
and gas station bath-
rooms. Why, you may
ask, would we inflict
this torture upon our
nostrils and our sleep
schedules? My mom is
an inmate at Decatur
Correctional Center
(prison) (no, I mean lit-
erally, prison).
Ironically
enough, I much prefer
the town of Decatur,
IL from inside the
walls of the correc-
tional center. There,
the stench is replaced
by outdated sterility.
From here most would
continue on into the
shakedown room and
finally into the sadly
illustrated visiting
room where, gasp, you
don’t actually have to
talk through glass and
a weird telephone con-
traption as shown on
Legally Blonde. Instead,
I do my shakedown and
planned activities, I
get to hang out with my
mom while listening to
horrible country music
on her 13 inch TV. The
TV only works because
of the adhesive cov-
ered shampoo labels
holding the antenna in
position against the
wall. I get to eat prison
pizza which is a deli-
cacy I am glad I was
fortunate (or unfortu-
nate) enough to experi-
ence , have lotion slath-
ered on my face by my
mom, read her Rolling
Stone magazines, and
kick her butt at Scrab-
ble. Despite the odor
and cringe worthy
grammar of some of
the women, I wouldn’t
trade these visits for
anything.
