BackgroundParticipation will provide volunteers with the skills to undertake ecological burning as part of the 'Saving the Small Purple-pea' project.The opportunity will be available to volunteers who successfully complete Basic Fire Fighter training.
Opportunities for volunteersVolunteers will have the opportunity to:• Gain basic bushfire training and accreditation• Learn about ecological burning practices• Learn basic plant and animal identification
Bush fire training will be delivered by the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS).
Volunteers are eligible to join their local RFS brigade on completion of the training if they choose.
Once volunteers have successfully completed this training they will be issued with certificates of attainment which may be used as recognition of prior learning if they wish to pursue further training independent of this project.
TrainingThis course has been designed to give volunteers the knowledge and skills to fight bush fires safely and effectively under constant and direct supervision.
Delivery is broken down into the following subjects, however may be altered by the trainers depending on specific outcome requirements:

4. First attack fire fighting
5. Bush fire behaviour factors
6. Bush fire development
7. Examples of bush fires
8. Hazards and precautions
9. Hand tools, knapsacks, ropes and ladders

11. Water supply and pumps
12. Bush fire fighting techniques
13. Bush fire hazard reduction
14. Immediate emergency care
15. Bush fire fighting team work
16. Radio communications
17. Rural fire brigades

Central West Local Land Services will:• Provide morning tea and lunch on training days• Cover the cost of the training• Provide an opportunity for volunteers to
undertake ecological burning post successfulcourse completion as part of the 'Saving theSmall Purple-pea' project
Volunteers will:• Be required to commit to, and participate in the
full four days training – attending all days (Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 April)
• Cover the cost of their own transport to and from training
• Wear clothing suitable for field work including long trousers, boots/covered sturdy shoes, long sleeved shirt and hat
• Need to bring their own water and/or drinks for the training days.
Volunteers will need to submit an Expression of Interest form (see Attachment 1) and have been notified of their acceptance into the training by Central West Local Land Services.

The project is being managed by Central West Local Land Services with funding from the National Landcare Program to assist in the Recovery of the Small Purple-pea. Ecological burning will be carried out in 2019 on various sites, (including Crown Land and private property) over a total of four hectares. This component of the project has been designed to facilitate an improved understanding of ecological burning, and how it can be used by land managers and the Aboriginal community to enhance biodiversity and habitat for the Small Purple-pea.Central West Local Land Services is seeking expressions of interest from community members who would like to volunteer to gain Basic Fire Fighter accreditation and participate in ecological burning in the future.*Training has been scheduled for four days from Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 April from 8.30 am -4.30 pm
This project will offer volunteers the opportunity to:• Gain basic bushfire training and accreditation• Learn about ecological burning practice• Learn basic plant and animal identification.
