1.1.General
Systemplaners,system-integratorsandusersdemandreliabledevicesandprocedureswhichfacilitatetheimplementationofversatilesolutionswithanincreasingofferofusecasesofEnOceantechnology.TheEnOceanAllianceCertificationProgram–linkedwithacorrespondingmarkingondevices–isTHEtoolfortheEnOceanAlliancetosecureinteroperabilityofEnOcean-baseddevices.
Itcoversallelementsofthecommunicationadequatelydefined.TheprimaryobjectiveoftheEnOceanAllianceCertificationProgramisaself-declarationofthedevicemanufacturer,similartotheEuropeanCE-declaration.Asapartoftheprogramanoptionalextensionforasupplementaryverificationbyanindependentandaccreditedtestlaboratoryisforeseenstraightfromthebeginning.
The“EnOceanAllianceCertificationHandbook”–thisdocument-formsakindofabracketfortheentireprocessandsecuresasmoothexecutionofthecertificationprocess.Atonesideitsupportstheunificationandbythisthetraceabilityofthecertification’sdocumentation,attheothersideitisaguidelinefortheproductdevelopmentprocess,supportingthedevelopmentbasedproductqualityandthusthedesiredproductinteroperability.

Chapter1,IntroductionandMotivation,providesaninsightintothephilosophyoftheEnOceanAllianceCertificationProgram.Theapproachchosenanditspragmaticimplementationwillbedetailedandtheobjectivewillbeexplained.Thischapterisamendedbythedefinitionsandreferences.
Chapter2,theCertificationProcess,outlinesthedifferentrolesinvolvedinthisprocess,anddetailsthephasesoftheprocess.Athirdsub-chapterexplainshowcertificationshallworkasapartofproductimplementationandshowsthatcertificationisasupportiveprocesstoachieveproductqualityandnotanadditiveburden.Theroll-outoftheprocessconcludesthischapterdeliveringthedefinitionsofthecertificationlevels,theirconditionsandvaliditydates.

1.2.Philosophy
MembercompaniesoftheEnOceanAllianceofferproductsorservicestoverydynamicandrapidlydevelopingmarkets.Toalargeextentmembercompaniesarespecialistsintheirpartofthemarket;veryseldomtheyprovideallelementsforaconsistentsystem/datanetwork/communicationchain.Mostofthemprovideelementsofacommunicationinfrastructurewhichrequireelementsfromothermembercompaniestointeractwithforaseamlesstransportofdata.AtypicalinstallationofproductsbasedonEnOceantechnologycouldbebuiltwithsensorssuppliedbycompanyA,connectedtogatewaysfromcompanyB,andservingactuatorsfromcompanyC.Suchaninstallationwillonlyworksuccessfullyandefficientlyifallofitscomponentsareabletocommunicateproperlywitheachotherandbythisprovidethefunctionalitythesecomponentsandthenetworkweredesignedfor.

Theproofofperformanceaccordingtothespecificationofaparticulardeviceremainswithintheresponsibilityofthemanufacturer.TheresultofthisproofisamandatorycomponentoftheEnOceanCertificationtodeliverareliableend-to-endperformanceoffunctionalitytooperatorsandcustomers.Self-powereddeviceshavetobesupplementedbyadeclarationoftheenergyconceptatthislevel.Onlybythis,theperformanceofadeviceoveradefinedperiodoftimecanbeadequatelyensuredwithenergycollectedfromtheambient.
1.4.PragmaticImplementation
TheEnOceanAllianceCertificationProgramappliesashellprinciple,i.e.themanufacturerofaproductapplyingaplatform/radiochip/radiomoduleofasupplierwhichpassedalreadytheEnOceanCertificationProgramandbearsan“EnOceancertified”logocanbenefitfromthecertificationeffortspentontheplatform.
Theplatforminheritsitspropertiestotheproductaccordingtothefollowingrules1:
a) Iftheproductutilizeslessthan100%ofthefunctionalitiesoftheplatform:theproductmanufacturermayreferentirelytothecertificationresultsandcertificationapproval(EnOceanAllianceCertificationdocument)oftheplatform;certificationtestingoftheproductisnotrequiredbutrecommended.Theproductdocumentationneedstostatethedifference(s)betweenplatformandproduct.Thus,thiswillbedocumentedaswellintheCertificationDocumentationofthisproduct.TheuniqueCertificationNumberallocatedbytheEnOceanAlliancetotheplatformneedstobestatedintheEnOceanAllianceCertificationdocumentoftheproduct.TheproductwillreceiveitsownCertificationNumber.

TheEnOceanAlliancedecidedtofocusontheself-certificationandallowforthirdpartycertificationasanalternative.Inconsequencethisrequiresthecertificationprocesstoallowforarangeoftestenvironmentswhileensuringreproducibilityofthetestresultsatthesametime–withotherwords:testcaseshavetoberobustandtoleranttoachievetheobjectiveinteroperability,thecertificationprocessneedstobestringent.ThephilosophyadoptedfollowstheintentionoftheEuropeanCE-Certification.Whicheverwaywillbechosenbythedevicemanufacturerthecertificationprogramcoversallelementsessentialforreliablecommunicationbetweentwoormoredevices.
AnEnOceanAllianceself-certificationrequiresseveralstepstobeperformedbythemanufacturerofthedevicewhichcanbeperformedwithoutsignificantadditionaleffortaspartoftheanyhowrequiredverificationoftheproductdevelopment.TheexecutionoftheindividualcertificationtestcaseswillfollowthetestspecificationsdevelopedbytheEnOceanAlliance.Bythismeans,itwillbeensuredthatalldeviceswillundergoanidenticaltestprocessandthetestcoverageaswellasthetestresultswillbecomparableandreproducibleindependentlyfromtheindividualdevicemanufacturer.

3.2.Approvalofcertificationstatus
Oncethecertificationtestingwillbecompletedandthedocumentationwillbesubmitted(refertochapter2.2.3)theapprovalmanageroftheproductmanufacturermayenterthedataoftheproductandtheproductdocumentationintothecertifiedproductdatabase.BydoingsotheapprovalmanagerinitiatestheReviewPhaseoftheCertificationProcess(refertochapter2.2.4).
TheReviewPhase(referto2.2.4,please),startingwiththesubmissionoftheEnOceanAllianceCertificationdocumentandendingwiththeassignmentofauniquecertificationnumberwillnormallynotexceedfourweeks.OncethisReviewPhaseispassedtheproductisapprovedtobemarkedwiththe“EnOceanAlliancecertified”seal,i.e.theEnOceanAlliancetechnologylogo.
IncaseofanegativeresultoftheReviewPhasetheEnOceanAllianceCertificationManagerwillcontactthesubmitterandrecommendfurtherstepstosecuretheinteroperabilityoftheproduct.
