During CES 2015, Ford announced Smart Mobility, a multi-decade roadmap to target the problems associated with greater urbanisation and the global growth of a car-owning middle class. The company’s vision is based on mobility, big data, autonomous vehicles and the customer experience.

• This week GM introduced a host of new features enabled by 4G LTE connectivity on select 2016 models, due to hit showrooms this year. One of the most interesting is called OnStar Driver Assurance.

• The feature predicts when certain engine parts might fail and warns drivers so they can get them fixed or replaced before problems occur—a major improvement over the dubious "check engine" light.

• Sensors in the vehicle track how the parts are performing. That data is then uploaded to OnStar’s cloud-based servers (over 4G LTE, of course) and run through algorithms that assess the parts’ conditions. If it appears there’s a problem with something, drivers get notified via email, text message, in-vehicle alerts, or through the OnStar RemoteLink smartphone app.

• Initially, the Driver Assurance technology will focus on the battery, starter motor, and fuel pump—all critical to starting a vehicle and keeping it running reliably. Owners must also enroll their vehicle and opt in to the program. GM expects to roll out the capability to some versions of the 2016 Chevrolet Corvette, Equinox, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe, followed by others lines during the 2016 model year.

• The consumer electronics trend most likely to impact multiple industries in a significant way over the next 5 – 10 years is the driverless car. Urban planning, media, air/rail/truck transport, construction, schools, restaurant chains, Internet retail, telecomm and more will be impacted. Watch what the automakers show and then follow the announcements at NAIAS, the week after CES. Even more, watch for companies starting to position themselves for a time when people gain one to two hours per day.

• Self-driving technology from automotive suppliers Delphi and Valeo at CES 2015 suggest that current adaptive cruise control systems may soon add self-steering, so drivers can let the car take over in stop-and-go traffic and on long highway runs. Delphi even showed the full capabilities of its self-driving technology in an urban environment, but that likely won't hit production for many years.

Intel's SD card-sized Edison was one of the highlights of the show, a tiny board built around a two core Quark system-on-a-chip, with memory, radio and a full set of SDIO ports. Quark is Intel's processor for the IoT, a sub-Atom (hence the name!) 32-bit device devoid of SSE and other extensions, while still supporting as many interfaces as possible. It's also very low power, drawing less than a watt. That makes it ideal for sensor-driven devices - especially in control systems, as it's designed for real time operating systems
