STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name: Saad Altami Level: 20 Hometown: Kuwait City, Kuwait. Major: Mechanical Engineering

Hi Saad, how long have you been here? I came to Tucson Oct 5th, and this is my first time to America. I have visited many countries but America has been the farthest from Kuwait. Where have you visited? London, Rome, Paris, Frankfurt, Austria, and the Arab countries around Kuwait. So you are in the student parliament in Kuwait, what does that mean? Its like the real parliament - but of education, we make laws about education and we can start new ideas and vision. The real parliament deals with the government and country - we deal with education. I won in an election with 88% of the vote! In Kuwait there are many political parities, but similar to America, there are two main ones: the islamic party, and the democratic party, 24 males and 24 females. Wow! And why were you better than your opponent? How did you convince 88% of the voters to vote for you? I am a human rights activist in my country - the government sent me to jail for 12 days. Many many people went to the judge and marched in the street demanding my freedom. Many people were also tweeting and using social media to voice their opinions about me being in jail. Why did you get arrested? How was it in jail? Because I am a human rights activist and the government didn't like that. My experience in jail was not a bad one, and when I got out, I ran for parliament. I won and made lots of laws about student and human rights. I told the minister that we want a human rights meeting  - to teach students how to respect other cultures and religions. What does that mean, to be a human rights activist? I invite all the people and the government to respect human rights and spread human rights to people all over the world. Don't kill people, respect the opinions of humans, and invite people to talk about their rights. How long were you in parliament? From 2013 - 2014. And who can vote for these education parliament seats? Any high school student can vote regardless of age, they can be 14 or 80 - as long as they are students. Would you like to return to politics when you return to Kuwait? Yes - I come from a political family. My grandfather was in parliament from 1971 - 2003 and my grandfather on my mother's side was also a member of parliament in the 70s.

Wow! Thanks for sharing Saad!
