Welcome to the April /May edition of The CF15 Directory.

One of the great things about publishing The CF15 Directory is getting the chance to meet and talk with people from all walks of life.

From advertisers, charity event coordinators, competition winners & contributors, I have met & talked to so many people within and around CF15.The experience has been amazing & has confirmed to me how important community is. Since my little boy started nursery I have also been lucky enough to meet many other mums dads & others who are or were in a similar position to me, due to the recession were made redundant & are now running their own businesses from home. It’s inspiring to hear about those who, despite the still sorry state of the employment market, are able to make a go of something new. It’s a sure sign that the days of doom and gloom are behind us!

This edition is jam packed with information for you, Easter baking, articles & the usual mix of useful numbers and community news. April & May will hopefully see some warmer weather, so why not get out and about & support one of your local events, have a tidy up in your garden & if it does stay warm then why not get the BBq out & start summer early!

In the last edition I ran a competition to win an early bird supper for two at Seasons kitchen & Bar in Radyr, I would like to congratulate Hannah Edwards for winning. Enjoy your meal! This edition you have the chance to win a giant chocolate Easter egg courtesy of The Carpet Genie. All you have to do is find the missing word from the word search on the competition page!

Lastly I am looking for ideas for features for forthcoming editions. Also I am always pleased to hear about your news, this is YOUR magazine, so please do send your articles, recipes or community news to me. Why not advertise your business in The CF15 Directory, with 8000 copies distributed & each edition on line; it’s a sure way to get your business noticed!

Happy Easter,Joanna

News from Radyr Primary School:

It has been another busy and highly productive term for the pupils and staff at Radyr Primary School. We currently have children representing Cardiff and the Vale in Rugby, Football, Cricket and Gymnastics with excellent results being reported. Our Rock Bands performed for the first time to a capacity audience of excited children in early February and our parents were entertained in the evening by ‘The Funk Sinatras’, an event which raised just over £1000 for the school. Thanks to this and the many other fundraising activities organised by our PTA, our Nature Trail and Nature Area are nearing completion and we were delighted with the results of our Nature Trail Logo Competition. The winning entry by Brooke has been carved into each of the benches in our nature area which is due to be opened shortly. The Junior Yard has been enhanced with quiet areas, a climbing wall, adventure equipment and a football area and as soon as our leaning boundary wall has been repaired, work (chosen by the school council) will begin on the junior yard. Our caretaker has been working hard to create allotments for each year group and we are keen to hear from any volunteers who may be able to spare an hour a week to work with a small group of children, maintaining and developing these areas. On St David’s Day we celebrated our whole school Eisteddfod during which the children sang, recited poetry, danced, gave recitals on various instruments and displayed their fantastic art work to the school. We were delighted that our Reception and Year One Children were the winners of the Cardiff and the Vale Peace Festival Art Competition with their design of a solar powered car. Two representatives attended County Hall to receive their certificates and prize for the school which was presented by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Cardiff. Representatives from our School Council also visited County Hall to take part in the Grand School Council meeting, sharing ideas with other school councils from across Cardiff. Following our win of the Cardiff Really Rubbish Campaign ‘design a Caddyman’ competition at the end of last year, pupils were invited to the Norwegian Church to take part in the launch of this year’s competition. Our local PCSO Tori has been patrolling the streets with our Junior PCSOs (from Year 6) to monitor parking outside of the school. The children are delighted to report that the majority of our parents continue to park considerately around the local area. We are fortunate to have been visited by Reverend Jenny Wigley and Reverend Susan McIvor who have delivered assemblies for the children recently and we are looking forwards to hearing our school choir perform in the Saint Davids Hall on the 1st of April in aid of the Breast Cancer Care Charity. If you would like to keep up to date with events at Radyr Primary School, please log onto our website www.radyrprm.cardiff.sch.uk

Newsletter from County Councillor Rod McKerlich

The main issues which residents have raised since I last wrote are:

Dog Fouling: this is a major concern to those who encounter the consequences on their route to school or on a walk round our villages. I have arranged the installation of extra litter bins and urge people to use poop bags and place them in a litter bin.

Taylor Wimpey: residents in Sidings are unhappy about the attitude of this developer in respect of non existent grit bins, inadequate parking facilities and reluctance to share with the community the community site or benefits from developing that site.

Nat West Bank: this is now open on only 3 weekdays. Representations have failed to change this but local senior management have guaranteed that closure will not occur.

Radyr Village Centre: there is a unanimous view that a major reorganisation is needed but no consensus on what is required; consultation is on-going.

Parking around schools: this is often both dangerous and inconsiderate and is a matter of concern to neighbours and other parents.

This year, we have elections for County Council and Community Council; each of these bodies and their elected members can make a big difference to the local communities they serve. No doubt you will receive a lot of literature and be visited by canvassers. This is your chance to say what you expect in the coming term of office.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF CARDIFF-CITY OF LLANDAFF(Formerly the Rotary Club of Llandaff)

Founded 1964

Llandaff Rotary Club held soccer and netball tournaments for school teams from Cardiff during March.

The club arranged two splendid afternoons at the Western Leisure Centre – this eleventh annual competition was enjoyed by all the youngsters and their supporters.

The boys and girls in the football and netball teams were a credit to their schools. The club acknowledge the help and support of the teaching staff that brought the teams,

provided referees and generally made the competition worthwhile. Staff at the Leisure Centre made a considerable contribution to ensuring that the equipment was in place at

the right time. The winning teams were presented with Cups and shields courtesy of our sponsors

South Wales Police 3 Peaks ChallengeYou may recall an article in last year’s April/May edition of Th e CF15 Directory, when we told you about a group of intrepid South Wales Police offi cers, based in the Vale of Glamorgan who were taking part in the 3 Peaks Challenge…Well the walk didn’t put them off & they are at it again, & this time there are more of them! Th e 3peaks last year proved so successful that more offi cers have volunteered to take part in the gruelling challenge.

For those of you who don’t know, the 3 peaks challenge involves travelling to & climbing Snowdon, Scaff ell Pike & Ben Nevis, in 24 hours. Th e event; organised for the 3rd year running, by Morganstown resident Sergeant Steve King, is to raise vital funds for Ty Hafan & Cancer Research Wales.

Ty Hafan was established in 1999 to provide respite, palliative and end of life care to children in Wales who suff er from life limiting conditions. Life limiting conditions are those which mean the child or young person is not expected to reach nineteen years of age.

Cancer Research Wales was founded in 1966 by Doctor Ken Davies, & since then their achievements for cancer research have been considerable. Th e research lab based at Velindre Hospital is a centre of excellence for the non-surgical treatment of cancer.

Both of these charities rely heavily on the people of Wales to take part in sponsored events such as the 3 peaks, and to make donations so that they can continue their vital work.

Th e offi cers will be undertaking this diffi cult task mid-May, starting off from Gwaelod y Garth & heading to Snowdon, with the hope that Snowdon will be scaled & descended early enough for the Scaff ell Pike walk to be started while it’s still day light! Ben Nevis will then be walked either in the middle of the night, or at day break! Several members of the team, including Sgt.King, are also planning a trip to scale the giddy heights of Kilimanjaro in 2013, again in aid of charities.Sgt King is looking for contributions for both the SWP 3 peaks challenge this year & for the Kilimanjaro event in 2013, from small personal donations to corporate sponsorship & off ers of kit, food & drinks. Many of last year’s sponsors are already on board, including Burnt Tree vehicle hire who have again kindly donated the use of two mini buses.

You can fi nd out more about the challenge & how to get involved in either donating or sponsorship by contacting Sergeant King on 07870635765 or by emailing

Ffion’s Fun FactualsThe Last Supper

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples asked Jesus, “Where would you like us to plan for you to eat the Passover feast?” Jesus replied to them, “Go into the city and you will find a man, and tell him that we would like to come to his house for Passover.”

First of all, what is the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and what is the Passover? These are actually the same things. The Jews celebrated the Passover ever since the time of Moses, when the Lord saved all the Israelite babies. This was when the Lord ‘passed over’ their houses, and they were kept safe. This is another big story your teacher will have to tell you another time.

During the time of the Passover celebrations the people didn’t eat or have any bread in their homes with yeast in it. Yeast is what makes the bread all big and puffy. Without yeast the bread is flat, and that is called unleavened bread. Now back to the story.

The disciples did just as Jesus asked, and they found a place and got ready for the Passover.

The evening came, and Jesus and the twelve disciples sat to eat the meal. The disci-ples were eating quietly, they had a lot on their minds. They were worried because some people wanted to kill Jesus because he was getting so popular.Jesus could see the disciples were worried. He said to them quietly, “I tell you the truth, one of you here will betray me.” The disciples looked at each other in shock, and some of them asked Jesus, “It isn’t me, is it Lord?”

Jesus replied, “The one who dips his bread into the bowl with me will betray me. I will die, just as it is written, but the man who betrays me will feel sorry forever. Then Judas, with his head down spoke quietly to Jesus, “It isn’t me, is it?” Jesus an-swered, “Yes, you are the one.” Judas’ head went down even lower, he had hoped that the other disciples had not heard what Jesus said. Luckily, they were paying more attention to Jesus breaking apart some bread.

He thanked God for the bread and shared it with the disciples and said, “Take this and eat it. This is my body which is given for you”. Then he took a full cup, thanked

God for it and said, “This is my blood, which will be poured out for many peo-

Page 19: CF15Directory April / May 2012

19Please mention The CF15 Directory when responding to adverts

ple so their sins may be forgiven.” Then they all took a sip from the cup.

The meal continued after this, it was a long celebration. The disciples took their time, because they enjoyed talking with Jesus and asking Him questions. (Just like when you go out to eat with your parents and their friends, sometimes they seem to talk forever, and you just want to go home...).

After some time Jesus got up from the table and went to a different part of the room. He took off his everyday clothes, and put a large towel around him, making himself look like a servant. After that, he poured water into a large bowl and began to wash the disciples’ feet. Then dried them with the towel that was wrapped around Him.

First of all, Jesus is like a King - but even greater than a king, He’s the King of King’s! By washing the disciples feet He was doing something that only a servant would do. This would be like if someone famous came to your house and started to clean your room, even getting down on their hands and knees to clean under your bed! It prob-ably would never happen.

When it was Peter’s turn to get his feet clean he said to Jesus, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You don’t understand what I am doing, but you will later.”

“No,” said Peter, “you will never wash my feet.” He said this because he didn’t feel right having Jesus wash his feet. He knew Jesus was very special.Jesus replied back to him, “If I don’t wash your feet, you cannot be with me.” “Then, Lord,” Peter replied, “don’t just wash my feet but my hands and head too.” Jesus then explained that He only needed to wash his feet; and that would make his whole body clean.

When Jesus had finished washing all of the disciples feet, he put his everyday clothes back on and returned to the table. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” Jesus asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and that is who I am. And now that I have washed your feet, you can also wash one another’s feet.” This is an example of how you should treat others. You don’t have to actually wash other people’s feet, but by doing nice things to other’s and acting like a servant for Jesus, that is what He wants you to do. If you do these things Jesus will bless you.

1. How many disciples did Jesus have?2. What does Jesus compare the piece of bread to?3. What does Jesus compare the wine to?4. What did Jesus do to his disciples?

A message from the local police Huw and Tori.

At this present time we are having an increase in shed and garage burglaries. It is the time of year where new garden equipment is being purchased and bicycles are being used more.

We would like to remind residents that locking sheds and garden gates sends a message to prospective opportunist thieves that our area is not an easy target. To report incidents please use the 101 service, however if any persons are seen to be attacking sheds or garages please use 999.

South Wales Police off er crime prevention advice on ourbobby.com, along with crime statistics for each ward.

Please also advise if you would like to be involved with our email “community messenger” service. Much like the old ringmaster system, it advises residents by email of recent crime patterns and helpful crime prevention tips. To express interest please contact us as below.

JA Consultants is a long established business, offering guaranteed, cost effective, solus or shared option distribution services to clients throughout the UK. Established in 1975, the business operates in south Wales.

The company has well qualified and strategically placed professional teams, matching existing and future client expectations to a high standard. Services are designed to compliment your existing marketing strategies. Delivered direct to your potential clients premises, the service can be arranged as either 'solus' or as part of a shared drop. This unrivalled service is available at competitive rates.

We operate to the highest industry standards and as a result have a satisfied network of clients, situated throughout the UK, including universities, colleges, schools, local authorities, health boards and government departments, local, regional and multinational businesses, companies and organisations.

New and existing clients are assured that every effort is made to deliver your business marketing materials safely within an agreed timescale. A high percentage of new clients use us because of dissatisfaction with the low standards of delivery offered by cheap rate individuals or companies who perhaps mix them in with newspapers or other clients’ flyers SO THAT the bundle then becomes identified as spam.“Buyer Beware” is a useful adage to help stamp out dishonest individuals and companies.

Our ratings in terms of client satisfaction are between 90 and 100% (over a five year period and approximately 200 clients).

1 ¼ lbs/ 560g ready made marzipan1 lb/ 450g dried mixed fruits (currants, raisins, sultanas, glace cherries)3 oz/80g candied chopped peel8 oz/ 225g plain flourPinch salt1 tsp ground cinnamon1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg6 oz/ 175g butter6 oz /175g fine/caster sugar3 large eggs, beatenMilk to mix2 tbsp apricot jam

Preparation:Heat the oven to 325°F/170°C/Gas 3Line a 7 inch cake tin with greaseproof paper.Divide the almond paste into 3 and take one portion and roll it to a round the size of the cake tin.In a large roomy bowl mix the dried fruits, peel with the flour, salt and spices. In another large bowl cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Add the beaten egg to the butter mixture a little bit at a time, beating well after each addition - do not try to rush this process as the mixture could curdle. If it does curdle simply add a tbsp of the flour and mix again, this should bring the mixture back together.Carefully fold in half the flour and half the fruit into the egg and butter mixture, once incorporated repeat with the remaining flour and fruit.Put half of the cake mixture into the tin, smooth and cover with the round of almond paste. Put the remaining cake mixture into the tin and smooth the surface carefully. Bake in the centre of the oven for 1 hour.Lower the heat to 300°F/150°C/Gas 2 and bake for 3 hours until the cake is golden brown. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin.Roll another third of almond paste, again to the size of the tin. Make the remain-ing almond paste equally into 11 tiny balls.Once the cake is completely cool, remove from the tin and brush the top of the cake with apricot jam and cover with the disc of almond paste. Place the 11 tiny balls of paste evenly around the edge. Brush the paste all over with a little apricot jam and place under a hot grill until lightly browned. The cake can then be decorated as you wish with tiny Easter eggs or any other Easter theme. Enjoy!

ÒMy Special BobÓ Let me introduce you to my pony Bob, he is an amazing pony and is very special to me. Bob is special because he has a real sense of humour, he is cheeky and naughty, he causes trouble

all the time and constantly kicks his stable door for your attention and makes faces at you like in his picture! Bob is my first pony and I have done a lot with him like show jumping, dressage, crosscountry, drag hunting and lots of riding over the mountains to the forestry and beach. We have been to loads of places to compete with him like

Hereford, Milton Keynes and David Broomes. Bob has come on lots but sadly I will grow out of him soon and will not be able to ride him any more, I donÕt want to stop doing things with him so because I am growing out of him I want to start driving him. We tried him in a trap and he

was brilliant, we took Bob to David Brooms Event Centre to have a lesson with James Broom and he thinks he has a lot of potential in him and was very impressed with him. Once I have grown out of him I am interested in driving him myself and competing him in a trap. We would be able to do dressage like before but with a trap. Instead of show jumping and crosscountry jumping we would do obstacles and cones where you have to drive as fast as

you can around the course not hitting any of the gates or knocking the balls off the cones. Bob is too special to me and so I will not sell him and I will keep him and look after

him forever. Because I will not be able to ride him and will need to buy a trap and harness, which is expensive I have started saving all my pocket money and Birthday money so I can keep Bob always and we can still have fun together. Megan Coles & Bob aged 10 & 12 from Morganstown.
