Majority of workers in MDC’s are in tertiary sector (provision of services) *NA = ¾
Much less in LDC’s (less than 25%) Service sector divided into 3 types
1) Consumer services
2) Business services
3) Public Services

Consumer Services
Provide services to individual consumers who desire them & can afford them
Retail Services: ¼ of all jobs in US- provide goods for sale to consumers- wholesale, restaurants/food service, shops selling other goods
Personal Services: 1/5 of all jobs in US- provide services for well-being/personal improvement- health care, education, beauty salons, recreation
Business Services
Producer Services: 1/6 of US jobs- provide services to help people conduct other business- financial services (banks, real estate etc.), professional services (law, engineering etc.), & support services (advertising, janitorial etc.)
Transportation & Similar Services: Diffuse & distribute services (7% of jobs in US)- transportation (primarily trucking)- Information services (publishing, broadcasting)
Public Services
Provide security/protection for citizens & businesses
4 % of jobs in US Police, fire, military
