6 SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKSSAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKS

The Palestinian effort to have the U.N. Security

Council set a deadline for Israeli withdrawal from

the West Bank failed to win the necessary nine

votes for approval this afternoon. Palestinian

spokesmen had spoken confidently before the

vote of winning nine or even 10 votes. But two

nations whose support they said they expected,

Nigeria and South Korea, ended up abstaining.

In the end eight nations voted for the resolution,

two voted no and five abstained.

The outcome ended up confirming what some

Palestinian and Israeli spokesmen had said

weeks ago: that the resolution would fall short

if it came up for a vote in 2014. Palestinian chief

peace negotiator Saeb Erekat had warned in a

December 15 interview with an Arabic-language

Israeli radio station that the resolution didn’t

have nine votes.

Jordan, which holds the Arab group’s seat on

the Security Council, was said to be pushing for

a delay in the vote until next week, when five

new members take their seats, including fiercely

anti-Israel Malaysia, which will take the Asia-

Pacific seat currently held by South Korea. But

the Palestinians insisted on holding the vote

before the New Year’s holiday.

Jordan submitted the resolution to the

Security Council Monday night, over furious

objections from Israel and an American hint of

a veto.

The resolution called for an Israeli-Palestinian

agreement within a year and full Israeli

withdrawal from the West Bank by the end of

2017. The full text appears after the jump.

France tried in mid-December to put together

an alternative draft resolution that eased some

of the terms that most alarmed Jerusalem

and Washington, in hopes of securing U.S.

backing and perhaps getting unanimous council

support. Palestinian officials were said to be

reluctantly supporting the French effort. Just

before Christmas, though, the Palestinians let

it be known that they would submit their own

draft, and that instead of softening the language

they were hardening it even further.

That evidently made it easier for Washington

to peel away enough support to yield today’s

result: instead of nine supporters the resolution

won eight, with two voting against and five

abstaining.

The Palestinian tactics mystified Israeli and

American diplomats and prompted speculation

that the Palestinians were intending to lose the

vote. It was thought that they wanted to put on

a show of toughness to counter rising anger on

the Palestinian street and increasing pressure

from Hamas, but they didn’t want to anger

Washington by forcing it to cast a veto at a time

when it needs Arab support against ISIS.

Intriguingly, during the council discussion

following the vote Palestinian U.N. delegate

Riyad Mansour delivered a long, detailed,

furious denunciation of Israel behavior and

repeatedly criticized the council for failing to

act on its “responsibility” to intervene. But he

ended, incongruously, by thanking by name

the five council members whose terms end

tomorrow for their service: Rwanda, Australia,

South Korea, Luxembourg and Argentina. Three

of the five abstained (Rwanda and South Korea)

or voted no (Australia) and thus provided the

margin for the resolution’s narrow defeat.

Think of it this way: The council’s 15 members

include the five permanent members — U.S.,

U.K., France, Russia and China — and 10 non-

permanent members. Five of those 10 joined

the council in January 2013 and leave tomorrow

while rhe other five (Chad, Chile, Jordan,

Lithuania, Nigeria) joined in January 2014 and

serve for another year.

Of the seven no’s and abstentions that blocked

the Palestinian resolution, two came from the

five permanent members, two from the class of

2014 and three from the class of 2013 that leaves

tomorrow. In other words, it was the class of

2013 that provided Washington and Jerusalem

their margin of victory. And that was the group

that Mansour chose to salute in closing his

speech.

And if you’re wondering, no — none of the

other speakers saluted the departing class of

2013. Only Mansour.

Voting yes: China, France, Russia, Argentina,

Chad, Chile, Jordan, Luxembourg.

No: United States, Australia.

Abstain: United Kingdom, Lithuania, Nigeria,

South Korea, Rwanda.

The full text of the Palestinian draft resolution

appears after the jump.

In debate following the vote, U.S. ambassador

Samantha Power said that America supports the

principle of two states for two peoples embodied

in the resolution, but that the draft submitted

by Jordan addressed the needs of one side only.

She said it ignored Israel’s legitimate security

needs and “sets the stage for more divison, not

compromise. It could very well provoke the sort

of confrontation it purports to oppose.” And

she complained that the resolution had been

presented for a vote without giving council

members any opportunity to discuss it.

In a warning to Israel, she said that the United

States would continue to oppose actions that

undermine peace, “whether those actions come

in the form of settlement activity or unbalanced

resolutions within this council.”

In Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin

Netanyahu had lashed out at the Palestinian

effort during a Monday meeting with Indiana’s

Republican Governor Mike Pence, telling

reporters it was part of an “attack from Iran

and Islamic radicals” on “Israel and western

civilization.”

In Washington, State Department spokesman

Jeff Rathke told reporters Monday afternoon

that the draft resolution isn’t “constructive,” that

it sets “arbitrary deadlines,” “fails to account for

Israel’s legitimate security needs” and is “likely

to curtail useful negotiations.”

Israeli and Western diplomats had expressed

mystification at the Palestinians’ insistence on

rushing the resolution before the council during

2014, when it stood a good chance of failing,

rather than waiting a week for Malaysia to take

its seat. That would have given the resolution

nine votes, enough for passage. Washington was

expected to block passing by casting a veto, but

the nine votes would have given the Palestinian

cause a moral and propaganda victory.

Washington was eager to avoid having to cast

a veto, which would likely stir ill-will among

Arab allies whose cooperation is needed in the

fight against ISIS.

There was some speculation, in fact, that the

Palestinians wanted to submit the resolution in

order to present a tough public posture in the

face of growing Hamas pressure, but wanted it to

fail in order to avoid tensions with Washington

and to leave the door open to renewed

negotiations in the event that a more moderate

Israeli government is elected in March. Today’s

events do nothing to negate that speculation.

In early December the Palestinians floated an

initial draft of their resolution, with its deadlines

of one year for statehood and three years for

“complete withdrawal” of “Israeli security

forces” to the agreed borders.

1010 SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKSSAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKS

THE SPEEDIEST OF ALLRabbi Chaim Halberstam, the Divrei Chayim of Sanz, used to say that his prayers went up to Heaven only via Tsfat, the small holy city in the north of Israel. Therefore, he wished to have a synagogue in Tsfat to serve as his personal “channel.”

In the 1860’s He sent his eldest son, Rabbi Yechezkel-Shraga Halberstam (eventually to be known as the Divrei Yechezkel of

Shineva), to establish such a shul. The Shinever made the journey to Tsfat twice, where, in addition to his mission, the famous “Mikveh of the Holy Ari”* was for him a major attraction.

He was an exceptionally pious Jew, and one of his long-established personal customs was to go the mikveh several times a day. Of course, as a pious Jew and a Torah scholar of the highest level he could never justify taking so much time away from Torah study, so he trained himself to be exceptionally quick in getting undressed, jumping into the freezing waters of the underground spring-fed Ari mikveh, immersing, emerging, toweling and dressing.

One afternoon, as he was undressing in the mikveh chamber, a much older man entered the room, undressed-immersed-dressed and started to leave before Rabbi Yechezkel could even finish undressing. He was astonished-how could anyone do this so much faster than he could!

“Who are you?” he called out; “what’s your name?”

The man glared at him fiercely. “Why are you asking me my name?” Then he walked out.

The Divrei Yechezkel quickly put his clothes back on and ran out after the man, but he was already out of sight.

1313SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKSSAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKS

After finally establishing the Sanz Shul in the Tsfat’s Old City Jewish Quarter (where the remodeled version still thrives today), the Divrei Yechezkel made his way back to Europe. His father, the Divrei Chayim, demanded a detailed report of everything he had done and experienced. The son complied, but when he finished the father was not satisfied.

“That’s it?” he queried.“Yes.”“No, it can’t be,” stated the Divrei Chayim firmly. “You left something out.”“No I didn’t.”“Yes you did!”

The Divrei Yechezkel racked his memory. He had given his father an exhaustive detailed verbal report that had taken over an hour. What more could there possibly be to say?

Then he recollected the strange incident at the Ari Mikveh. “Strange, but not particularly significant,” he thought to himself. “Nevertheless, I’d better tell him about it.”

He related to his father the entire incident. His father looked up at him compassionately.

“My son, the next time you merit to greet Eliyahu HaNavi (Elijah the “Prophet), don’t ask him his name. Ask him for a blessing!”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Source: As heard by Yerachmiel Tilles from good friend, loyal Sanz chasid, and famous kabbalistic artist, Yaakov Kaszemacher of blessed memory, soon after moving from New York to Tsfat in 1978.
Biographical notes:
Rabbi Chayim Halberstam of Sanz [of blessed memory: 25 Nissan 5553 - 25 Nissan 5636 (April 1793-April 1876 C.E.)] was the first Rebbe of the Sanz-Klausenberg dynasty. In addition to being a renowned Torah scholar, he is famous for his extraordinary dedication to the mitzvah of tzedaka. His voluminous and wide-ranging writings were all published under the title Divrei Chayim.
Rabbi Yechezkel-Shraga Halberstam of Shineva, (of blessed memory: 20 Shvat 5573 - 6 Tevet 5660 ( Jan. 1813- Dec. 1899 C.E.)], was the eldest son of the Divrei Chayim, Rabbi Chayim Halberstam of Sanz. As an emissary of his father, he founded the Sanzer community and synagogue in Tsfat in 1870. He served as the rabbi of Shineva from 1855 till 1868, and then again from 1881 till his passing. A great Torah genius, many of his Torah insights into Scripture, Law and Kabbalah are collected in Divrei Yechezkel.
When a person passes on to the next world, the first question the When a person passes on to the next world the first question the Beis DinBeis Din on high on highasks him is, "Were your business dealings honest?"
A certain Yid was so occupied with his business throughout the entire week that he only had Shabbos to devote himself to learning Torah. He felt so bad about this that he asked a chochom: "What can I do that will be equivalent to all other mitzvosand will bring me to Olam HaBa?"
The chochom answered, "Since you are a businessman, make sure to deal honestly with both Yidden and goyim; tilt the scale to benefit your customer; and always do your business dealings with a smile."
The chochom concluded, "If you do so, may my portion in Olam HaBa be like yours!"
Although Lavan tricked Yaakov Avinu countless times, Yaakov Avinu remained honest with him, never taking anything he was not entitled to. He watched over Lavan's sheep in the sweltering heat and bitter cold, and replaced any lost sheep even when the loss was entirely not his fault.
The Shulchan Aruch goes into great detail when it paskens that it is forbidden to mislead anyone, whether a Yid or a goy, in business dealings, even when an extremely small amount is involved.
A few examples: If a customer is expecting a certain product, it is forbidden to sell him something of lesser quality. One is not allowed to polish a product so it will
appear to be of superior quality. A worker must work faithfully, doing his job with the utmost diligence. If one gives his word to make a deal, he must abide by his word of honor. Indeed, a yereh Shamayim should not only keep his word: he should even abide by a decision he made in thought!
( " ' " , " " " " )
The amora Rav Safra had an item for sale. One day while he was reciting Kerias Shema, someone approached him and offered to buy it for a certain price. Since Rav Safra did not respond, the man assumed that he wanted more money, and offered a higher figure. When Rav Safra finished, he sold it to the man at the original price, since in his mind he had agreed to that offer.
HONESTY BRINGS SUCCESSThe Torah promises that if a person deals honestly, his earnings will increase, whereas if he is dishonest he will lose his money. Furthermore, one who deals honestly will be rewarded even for business he did not do, for had he done so, he would have surely been honest.
Once, as Eliyahu HaNovi was walking on his way, a man approached him and asked him many questions in Torah. After Eliyahu HaNovi answered each one, the man related the following:
"A goy once came to my home to buy a large amount of dates. I only had a small measuring container, and therefore needed to measure small amounts and then total all the measurements together. Because of this, and the fact that my house was dark, I miscalculated and gave him less than I was supposed to. Later, I used the money to buy a jug of oil, and put it in the same place where I had sold the dates. A short while later the jug broke, and all the oil spilled out."
Eliyahu HaNovi explained to him that the Torah forbids stealing from a goy, just as it forbids stealing from a Yid.
CHINESE OR ANGE CHICKEN Orange chicken is a Chinese-restaurant favorite for good reason. Think of it as a Chinese-American version
of fried chicken nuggets coated in a savory citrus sauce punctuated with a light touch of chile heat. What’s
not to love? Making it at home—instead of resorting to takeout—is much easier than you might think, and
probably involves about as much time as it takes to find the menu online and wait, wait, wait for the delivery.
And we guarantee you will be bowled over by the layers of flavor and texture!
PREPARATION
Start the chicken:
In a shallow, medium bowl toss the chicken pieces with the soy sauce and wine. Let stand while you make the sauce.
Make the orange sauce:
Using a vegetable peeler, remove 4 lengthwise strips of zest from 1 orange—each strip should be about 3/4 inch wide and 3 1/2 to 4 inches long. Arrange the zest in one layer between paper towels and microwave on high in 20-second increments until dry and brittle but not browned, 60 to 80 seconds total. Let the zest cool then finely chop it. If desired, use a Microplane to remove some of the remaining zest from the orange and reserve it for garnish. (If desired, zest the second orange for additional garnish.)
Squeeze enough juice from both oranges to measure 1/2 cup. In a small bowl, whisk together the juice and 2 teaspoons cornstarch until the cornstarch is dissolved.
In a 10-inch skillet, heat 1 tablespoon oil over moderate heat until hot but not smoking. Add the garlic, ginger, crushed red pepper, and dried orange zest and stir-fry until golden, about 30 seconds. Add the soy sauce, wine, vinegar, and sugar and stir until the sugar dissolves, about 5 seconds. Stir the orange juice–cornstarch mixture then add it to the skillet. Bring the sauce to a boil, stirring, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 1 minute. Remove the skillet from the heat and set it aside while you fry the chicken.
Fry the chicken:
Line a large rimmed baking sheet with paper towels.
In a 10-inch cast-iron skillet, heat 1/2 inch of oil until a deep-fry thermometer registers 365°F. Meanwhile, coat half of the chicken, a couple pieces at a time, in cornstarch, making sure they are well coated and gently knocking off any excess, then transfer to a plate. Carefully add all the coated chicken to the hot oil, spacing the pieces apart from each other. Fry the chicken, turning it once or twice, until deep golden, about 5 minutes. While frying, adjust the heat as necessary to keep the oil at 365°F. Using a metal spider or a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken as done to the paper-towel-lined baking sheet. Continue to coat and fry the remaining chicken in the same manner, returning the oil to 365°F between batches.
Once the chicken is fried, place the skillet of reserved orange sauce over moderately low heat and bring it to a simmer, stirring and thinning the sauce with a little water if necessary. Add the chicken, and stir until thoroughly coated in sauce.
To serve:
Transfer the chicken to a serving dish and garnish with the scallions, and, if desired, the red chile slices and the freshly grated orange zest. Serve immediately with rice.
for success in an upcoming commercial venture.
"Have you written out your partnership contract?" the tzaddik asked.
"No," they said.
Reb Meir wrote the letters alef, ff beis, gimmel, daled on a piece of paper and handedit to them.
Seeing their amazement, he explained, "In these four letters, the secret to successis hidden. Each one is an initial: alef isf emunah, beis is bracha; gimmel is gneiva, and daled is dalus. If your transactions are trustworthy, they will be blessed; if you cheat,you can expect to become poor..."
Shlomo HaMelech writes, "Treasures of wickedness will not avail, but tzedakawill rescue from death." Since the word tzedaka is related to tzedek, which means "righteousness," the Meiri explains this possuk to mean that money acquired in adishonest manner will not bring benefit to a person; benefit can only come from money that is acquired righteously.
Another explanation of the above possuk: Tzedaka – in its usual sense of "charity"– that is given from dishonest money will bring no benefit, as it will fall into the hands of undeserving recipients. However, tzedaka given from righteously-earned money will find its way to worthy causes, and thereby protect the donor from death.
( , , , )
The Rebbe added that recognizing how a favorable livelihood comes from HaShemwill lead a person to deal honestly. For what use is there for money made dishonestly, if it will be spent on doctor bills and other unfortunate expenses?
CONSIDER THIS! Why is dealing honestly more significant than all other mitzvos??
Is success from honest business or loss due to dishonessty aaaapunishment or a natural consequence?
To preface: The Torah requires a Yid to be moral and honest in all matters. Often,even if one cannot point to a specific se'if in Shulchan Aruch that forbids something,fit is nevertheless obvious that the Torah forbids behaving in such a manner. So toohere, it is self understood that cheating on a test is an act of deception which flies inthe face of Torah's value of honesty.
However, the truth is that even from a dry legal perspective, cheating on a test involves several Halachic issues. Some instances of cheating have direct financialconsequences and thus would be considered gneiva. For example, if one was hiredbased on test scores that were achieved by cheating, the salary received based onfalse pretexts constitutes theft.
Even when there are no monetary implications, the very act of deceit that causesanother person, including a goy, to have a mistaken assumption or impression, is referred to in Halacha as gneivas daas. Chazal list seven types of thieves, the worst of which is someone who steals "the opinion” of others, i.e. leads them to falseconclusions. Therefore, leading a teacher to believe the answers on the test are hisown, when in reality they were copied from someone else, violates the prohibitionagainst gneivas daas. It should be noted that many rishonim hold that gneivas daas is an issur deoraisa.
In summary: there is no difference between limudei kodesh or lehavdil secular studieswith regard to the prohibition of gneivas daas.
Rebbetzin Rivkah was known as a great baalas tzeddaka, often pawning her jewelry for money to be given to the poor. In her later years, when theyeshiva Tomchei Temimim was instituted, she took care of feeding the bochurim, an occupation she did with deep love and enthusiasm, as she would do for her ownchildren. She passed away on Yud Shvat, c(1914).
Rebbetzin Rivkah excelled in her fine middos and consideration for others. When she married the Rebbe Maharash, she would often eat at the home of the Tzemach Tzeddek and sit to the right of her mother-in-law, Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka. Though Rebbetzin Rivkah was left-handed, she taught herself to use her right hand, since shefelt that using her left hand would be disrespectful…
Rebbetzin Rivkah's admiration for her husband, the Rebbe Maharash, was exceptional. She would never sit when he was standing, and if he entered the room while shewas sitting, she would stand up. Even when she had pains in her leg and the Rebbe reprimanded her, she remained standing.
Once, when exiting the Rebbe Maharash's study, Rebbetzin Rivkah's dress got caught in the door. Not wanting to knock and disturb her husband's learning, she sat there fora few hours until the Rebbe opened the door to leave the room.
(
When the Yeshivah Tomchei Temimim was established, Rebbetzin Rivkah took upon herself to provide for the talmidim. Often, students would eat "teg" (meals eaten at local residents) in her home, overseeing the food preparation herself. She would take an interest in each bochur, asking how his learning was progressing, if he had whereto eat every day and the like, and encourage them to add in their diligence in Torah and avoda.
A MOMENT WITH THE REBBE
POSTPONING THE MAILYechidus had finished in the wee hours of the morning, and the Rebbe had asked Reb Leibel Groner to bring in the mail. After working through onepile, the Rebbe asked for another one. And then another.
Reb Leibel knew how exhausting yechidus is for the Rebbe, and he realized that these letters would keep the Rebbe awake until shacharis. But on the other hand, a mazkir must do as he is told. Not daring to suggest anything rto the Rebbe outright, Reb Leibel came up with a plan. He wrote a notesuggesting postponing the mail for tomorrow, and placed it atop the next pile of letters that the Rebbe asked for.
When the Rebbe saw the note, the Rebbe looked up, smiled and commented,“Do you want me to put this letter off for tomorrow too?” And the Rebbe continued dealing with Klal Yisroel's needs all through the night.
3131SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKSSAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKS
At that point France entered the picture,
proposing a more moderate version that it
hoped could win unanimous council support,
Washington included. Reports at the time
indicated that the Palestinians were willing to
give the French proposal a chance.
On December 15, chief Palestinian peace
negotiator Saeb Erekat told an Arabic-language
Israeli radio station that their resolution didn’t
have the nine votes necessary to pass the council.
He said they were hoping to line up support
from France and Luxembourg and to convince
Washington not to veto.
Last week, however, it became clear that the
Palestinians were going ahead with their own
resolution, and that instead of softening its
terms they had actually hardened them.
On Sunday night, December 28, Palestinian
leader Mahmoud Abbas phoned Secretary of
State John Kerry and told him the resolution
would be submitted to the council this week and
would include certain new terms.
France was pushing to give the talks three years
instead of one and to organize them under an
international umbrella. The idea of international
sponsorship for peace negotiations has gained
considerable support in recent months among
Israeli centrists and security professionals. Many
see it as a way to put moderate Arab powers
behind the concessions that the Palestinian
leadership appears incapable of making on
its own.
Some of the changes in the new Palestinian
resolution are in tone: As reported by the
Israeli news site Ynet, the final version calls for
withdrawal of Israeli “occupation forces” instead
of “security forces.”
It also adds at least two demands that weren’t
present in the earlier version, Ynet reported:
release of Palestinian prisoners and a complete
freeze on Israeli settlement construction,
including in East Jerusalem.
The hardening of the resolution was
expected to reduce the likelihood of France
and Luxembourg voting for it. But Palestinian
sources were saying today that they had secured
French and Luxembourg support despite the
new language. Palestinian ambassador Riyad
Mansour told today’s press briefing that the
new version “incorporates some of the French
changes.” He added that the Palestinian move
was “the last chance to save the two-state
solution.”
Hamas on Monday called the U.N. measure
a “disaster” for the Palestinians because it
accepts the principle of Palestinian and Israeli
states living side by side, each with a capital in
Jerusalem, and thus abandons the fight for a
Palestinian state in all of historic Palestine.
Members of the Security Council:
Of the 15 council members, five are permanent
members with veto power: the U.S., U.K.,
France, Russia and China (the five major powers
that won World War II).
The other 10 are elected by the U.N.’s regional
groups: Africa, East Europe, Latin America and
Caribbean, Asia-Pacific and WEOG (Western
Europe and Others, which includes U.S.,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey and
Israel). They serve two-year terms, with five
new members rotating in every year. In practice,
one of the two Asia-Pacific members is always a
member of the Arab group.
Five current members joined in January 2014
and will serve until the end of 2015: Chad, Chile,
resolution, a just, lasting and comprehensive
peaceful solution that brings an end to the
Israeli occupation since 1967 and fulfills the
vision of two independent, democratic and
prosperous states, Israel and a sovereign,
contiguous and viable State of Palestine,
living side by side in peace and security within
mutually and internationally recognized
borders;
2. Decides that the negotiated solution will be
based on the following parameters:
– borders based on 4 June 1967 lines with
mutually agreed, limited, equivalent land swaps;
– security arrangements, including through a
third-party presence, that guarantee and respect
the sovereignty of a State of Palestine, including
through a full and phased withdrawal of the
Israeli occupying forces, which will end the
occupation that began in 1967 over an agreed
transition period in a reasonable time frame,
not to exceed the end of 2017, and that ensure
the security of both Israel and Palestine through
effective border security and by preventing
the resurgence of terrorism and effectively
addressing security threats, including emerging
and vital threats in the region;
– a just and agreed solution to the Palestine
refugee question on the basis of Arab Peace
Initiative, international law and relevant United
Nations resolutions, including resolution 194 (III);
– a just resolution of the status of Jerusalem
as the capital of the two States which fulfills
the legitimate aspirations of both parties and
protects freedom of worship;
– the just settlement of all other outstanding
issues, including water and prisoners;
1. Recognizes that the final status agreement
shall put an end to the occupation and an end
to all claims and lead to immediate mutual
recognition;
2. Affirms that the definition of a plan and
schedule for implementing the security
arrangements shall be placed at the center
of the negotiations within the framework
established by this resolution;
3. Looks forward to welcoming Palestine as
a full Member State of the United Nations
within the time frame defined in the present
resolution;
4. Urges both parties to engage seriously in the
work of building trust and to act together in the
pursuit of peace by negotiating in good faith
and refraining from all acts of incitement and
provocative acts or statements, and also calls
upon all States and international organizations
to support the parties in confidence-building
measures and to contribute to an atmosphere
conducive to negotiations;
5. Calls upon all parties to abide by their
obligations under international humanitarian
law, including the Geneva Convention relative
to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time
of War of 12 August 1949;
6. Encourages concurrent efforts to achieve a
comprehensive peace in the region, which
would unlock the full potential of neighborly
relations in the Middle East and reaffirms
in this regard the importance of the full
implementation of the Arab Peace Initiative;
Sleep Apnea and Fatigue:What Happens at Night Affects You During the Day
There are many causes of fatigue, including diabetes, sleep problems (sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy or restless legs syndrome), anemia, thyroid problems, and others. In short,
fatigue can be caused by any condition that results in a shortage of blood in the body, metabolic disorders, infections, ailments that are infl ammatory in nature, and, of course, sleep disorders. Fatigue can also be a strong indicator of depression.
Additionally, there is another condition called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Th is is a complicated and debilitating disorder characterized by deep and persistent fatigue which does not improve with rest and gets worse with any mental or physical activity. Typical symptoms include an inability to participate in normal day-to-day activities, muscle pains, failing memory, diffi culty staying focused, and sleeplessness, among others. CFS can sometimes be caused by sleep apnea.
Testing for Sleep ApneaMany patients do not realize that excessive daytime sleepiness
is often a sign of a more serious condition – sleep apnea – that can affect their heart, and lead to stroke, diabetes and other serious medical conditions. It is therefore imperative that those
experiencing fatigue and daytime sleepiness undergo a sleep study, either at home or in a sleep lab, to determine whether or not they suffer from sleep apnea, and measure the severity of the condition.
Sleep apnea is treated with either a CPAP mask and hose machine or a dental device. Aft er just a few weeks of treatment, patients see a dramatic improvement of fatigue symptoms and improved energy levels. Fatigue score of 8.8 (in a scale of 0 to 10, where 10 defi ned the highest levels of fatigue) have been found to be reduced to 0.1 aft er treatment.
Other therapies for treating snoring and sleep apnea include avoiding sleeping on your back, which can be done by using tennis balls sewn into a tee shirt or special sleep apnea pillows.
Unfortunately, about one-third of the cases of fatigue go undiagnosed. Th is happens primarily because doctors mostly go by what the patients report. Th us, if you are suff ering from fatigue, be sure to report to your doctor all symptoms so he has a complete picture to work with. Only then can an accurate diagnosis be made and an eff ective treatment program be designed to restore your energy and vitality and allow you to achieve all you want to accomplish during the day.
Fatigue, as most of us understand the term, means tiredness. It is a condition that affects the mind or body, or both, and generally manifests itself in an overwhelming feeling of exhaustion, a reduced desire to work, and an inability to effectively execute one’s responsibilities. Fatigue could happen suddenly (acute), or it may last a long time and become chronic. Most people who suffer from these symptoms find it difficult to explain their condition, and usually just say that they are feeling “tired.”
