MAKE SAUCE:

Heat sugar in a 12-inch heavy skillet over medium heat, stirring with a fork to heat sugar evenly, until it starts to melt, then stop stirring and cook, swirling skillet occasionally so sugar melts evenly, until it is dark amber. Stir in butter, water, rum, vinegar, and a pinch of salt (caramel will harden and steam vigorously) and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until caramel has dissolved. Add cream and bring to a boil, stirring, then remove from heat. Cool to warm.

MAKE BEIGNETS:

Preheat oven to 250°F with rack in middle. Set a cooling rack in a large shallow baking pan.

Heat 2 inches oil in a 5- to 6-quart heavy pot over medium-high heat to 375°F.

Meanwhile, peel apples and cut crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Cut out core with cutter, then pat apple rings dry.

Put 1 1/4 cups flour in a large shallow bowl and make a well in center. Beat egg in a small bowl with a fork, then stir in cider and 1 tablespoon oil and pour into well. Stir with fork until a lumpy batter forms.

Working in batches of 3 or 4, dredge apple rings in remaining 1/2 cup flour, shaking off excess, then dip in batter to coat, letting excess drip off, and fry, gently turning over once with a slotted spoon, until golden brown on both sides, about 2 minutes total per batch. Transfer to rack and keep warm in oven. Return oil to 375°F between batches.

Just before serving, dust warm beignets with confectioners sugar. Stir sauce, then serve on the side.

COOKS’ NOTES:

If you can’t find self-rising cake flour, you can substitute self-rising all-purpose. Use 1 cup in the batter and 1/2 cup for dredging. Increase cider to 1 cup and follow recipe as directed.

Sauce can be made 3 days ahead and chilled, covered. Warm before serving.

Beignets are best freshly made but can be fried 2 hours ahead and kept, loosely covered, at room temperature. Reheat beignets (they should not touch) on a rack set in a large shallow baking pan, uncovered, in a 325°F oven until hot, 15 to 20 minutes. ▪

Israel’s Netanyahu Says He Is ‘Determined To Speak Before Congress’Krishnadev Calamur

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today his country had a “profound disagreement” with the White House on Iran and he was “determined to speak before Congress” on March 3 on the Islamic republic’s nuclear program.

“I am going to the United States not because I seek a confrontation with the President, but because I must [fulfill] my obligation to speak up on a matter that affects the very survival of my country,” Netanyahu said in a statement.

In the statement, Netanyahu noted “serious disagreements” between past U.S. and Israeli governments, saying, “None of these disagreements led to a rupture in the relationship between Israel and the United States. In fact, over time, our relationship grew stronger.

“But we do have today a profound disagreement with the United States administration and the rest of the P5+1 over the offer that has been made to Iran. This offer would enable Iran to threaten Israel’s survival.”

Earlier, Netanyahu tweeted:

The P5+1 refers to the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council – Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States – plus Germany. They are engaged in talks

1616 SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKSSAY YOU SAW IT IN THE CH-LINKS

with Iran on its nuclear program. The West says Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies. Israel views Iran as an existential threat.

The dispute over Netanyahu’s speech began last month when House Speaker John Boehner invited the Israeli leader to address Congress. The White House was not consulted about the invitation and called it a departure from diplomatic protocol. Obama, citing the proximity of Israel’s March 17 election, said he wouldn’t meet with Netanyahu while the Israeli leader is in Washington.

Obama reiterated his position on Monday during a joint news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He said:

“We have a practice of not meeting with leaders right before their elections, two weeks before their elections. As much as I love Angela, if she was two weeks away from an election she probably would not have received an invitation to the White House — and I suspect she wouldn’t have asked for one.”

As NPR’s Jackie Northam reported: “Obama and Netanyahu have developed a prickly relationship over the past few years.”

Valerie Jarrett, Obama’s senior adviser, told NPR’s Renee Montagne in an interview that will air Wednesday on Morning Edition that the president has had several conversations with Netanyahu on the issue.

“This is not a space where personal feelings are appropriate,” she said. “This is a space where the president is doing what he thinks is in the national interest of the United States and which he also thinks is in the security interest of Israel.”

Obama said he has “very real differences” with Netanyahu over Iran, but added that U.S.-Israeli relations should go beyond Likud, Netanyahu’s political party, and the GOP.

Still, Netanyahu’s planned speech to Congress has irked many Democrats.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the longest-serving lawmaker in the Senate, said he would skip the speech, calling it “a tawdry and highhanded stunt that has embarrassed not only Israel but the Congress itself.” The state’s other senator, Bernie Sanders, an Independent, is also skipping the speech. Several House Democrats have also said they won’t attend.

There is bipartisan support in Congress to impose more sanctions on Iran, but Obama has threatened to veto any sanctions, saying diplomacy must be given a chance to work.

Netanyahu’s planned speech has also been criticized in Israel where opponents say the prime minister is damaging ties with Israel’s closest ally in order to boost his electoral prospects. ▪

Analysis: Hamas attack tunnels remain the greatest threat to Israel The IDF destroyed the last of the tunnels uncovered in the Gaza war on Monday, however Hamas continues to rebuild and improve what it knows is a vital strategic asset.

The IDF’s controlled explosion of a tunnel on Monday is a symbolic act that completes the achievement of one of the most important goals of last summer’s Gaza war - the destruction of some 30 Hamas attack tunnels.

The tunnel, located near the Gaza border in the area of the Karni crossing, some three kilometers from Kibbutz Nahal Oz, was uncovered during the war, but the destruction

of the tunnel was controlled and carried out in coordination with local residents. It was a branch of an attack tunnel that started in Gaza’s Shejaiya neighborhood. The tunnel, found to contain old weaponry, was destroyed in order to prevent Hamas from using it again in a future war.

Hamas did indeed suffer damaging blows in the war. The uncovering and destruction of the tunnels was one of the heaviest blows dealt to the organization. The defense establishment speaks of a “deterred Hamas,” but the concept of deterrence is clearly fragile. Therefore, in the IDF it is estimated that it is just a matter of time until the next round of fighting. It could be a matter of months or years.

There is one undisputed point agreed upon in the defense establishment: Hamas is continuing in its efforts to learn lessons from the war and rehabilitate its military capabilities. A week does not go by without reports of the organization carrying out rocket-launching experiments from different sites in the Strip, westward into the sea.

Hamas is still finding it difficult to smuggle weapons into Gaza, especially rockets, because of good Israeli intelligence and because of Egypt’s contribution to weakening the organization. Egypt is demolishing houses between Sinai and the Strip to create a 1,000 meter buffer zone which could potentially be expanded to three kilometers from the border. Cairo sees Hamas as a group which must be combated due to its support of jihadist terror in Sinai.

However, this doesn’t prevent Hamas from making domestically-produced rockets. In the past six months, since the conclusion of the Gaza war, Hamas is believed to have made several hundred rockets, good for various ranges, of the types used during Operation Protective Edge. However it is not known at this point if Hamas has received technological help from Iran that could potentially improve the rockets’ range and accuracy.

Hamas is also trying to divert building materials and cement to reconstructing the tunnels, even though soil conditions in the area allow for relatively easy and quick digging that makes it possible to build sturdy tunnels with a limited amount of cement. Wooden support posts generally suffice.

Therefore, Israel’s biggest problem remains the tunnels. Hamas has begun digging them again with the understanding that they are a strategic tool which must be updated and improved, as well as doing everything possible to make it more difficult for Israel to detect and uncover them in the future. ▪Yossi Melman is an Israeli journalist and writer who specializes in security and intelligence affairs. STANDING BEFORE HASHEMA righteous Yid once stopped by the roadside to daven. A powerful minister came riding by and greeted him, but he did not reply. The minister waited for him to finish and then screamed: "Good-for-nothing that you are! Doesn't it say in your Torah that you should guard your life? So why didn't you return my greeting? I could have chopped off your head with my sword!"

The Yid replied with a question, "If you were standing in front of a king, and your friend passed by and greeted you, would you return the greeting?"

"Of course not!" said the minister.

The Yid continued, "And if you did return the greeting to your friend, what would the king have done to you?"

"He would have chopped off my head!" said the minister.

The Yid concluded, "How much more so does this apply to the King of Kings, Who is eternal!"

The minister was appeased and the Yid continued his journey in peace.

In a letter to his chassidim, the Alter Rebbe explains why davening is likened to standing before a king. If a person standing before a mortal king busies himself with his own matters, he is publicly displaying his foolishness. Moreover, by publicly insulting the king he is forfeiting his life. But what if a person lacks the sensitivity to appreciate the awesome privilege of beholding the king in all his glory? He, too, should at least conduct himself with respect when in the royal presence. How much more so does this apply to the eternal King.

One must give close attention to the responses to Kaddish, for its holiness is even greater than that of Kedusha. Even during Shemoneh Esreh one should pause and listen to Kaddish [until the end of the sentence, "Yehei shmei rabba…"]. Those who speak during Kaddish should be admonished, even if there is a minyan present without them.

During chazoras hashatz one should concentrate and listen to the brachos of the chazzan. It is forbidden to talk, recite Tehillim or learn, even if one answers Amen. Those who do otherwise should be admonished.

If someone engages in mundane conversation during chazoras hashatz, his transgression is too great to bear, for by speaking while the congregation is involved in praising HaShem, he is showing that he has no connection to Him.

In order to ensure silence during davening, the Alter Rebbe enacted a decree that no idle talk should be spoken from the moment the sheliach tzibbur begins until the end of the last Kaddish. This applies during Shacharis, Mincha and Maariv.

SHOWING REVERENCEThe Zohar writes that by speaking during davening one implies that he does not believe HaShem is in shul, for if he did, he surely would not talk.

The Smak says that we ought to deduce a kal vachomer from the way idolaters conduct themselves in their places of worship: throughout their prayers, they stand in silence. How much more so does this apply to us, who stand in the presence of HaShem.

When Satan complains that Yidden commit aveiros, HaShem rejoins that if the goyim had accepted the Torah, they would have been far worse. However, when Satan argues that Yidden converse during davening, this response does not apply.

A hint for this can be found in the possuk, "HaShem yilacheim lachem v'atem tacharishun." The pshat, of course, is that "HaShem will fight your battle, and you shall remain silent." In addition, on the level of derush, that possuk is hinting that

HaShem will protect us – on condition that we remain silent and refrain from idle talk during davening…

The two tzaddikim – Reb Yaakov Yosef ("Reb Yeivi") of Ostroho and Reb Pinchas of Koretz – couldn't agree: What was the issue that needed the most urgent attention? Reb Yaakov Yosef held that it was the habit of idle conversation during davening, so he would go around and constantly arouse people to refrain from talking in shul. Reb Pinchas held that the most widespread problem was the lack of tznius, and he focused his efforts on correcting that.

One day, while they were debating this question, each trying to convince the other that he was right, they finally agreed that they would open a Chumash at random, and the first possuk to catch their eye would indicate who was right.

They opened a Chumash Bereishis, and immediately saw the words of Shimon and Levi concerning Dina: "Should he deal with our sister so grossly?!"

A victory for Reb Pinchas!

"Wait," said Reb Yaakov Yosef. "Let us look at the explanation written in Targum Yonasan." Sure enough, there it is written: "It is not proper that it be talked about in the shuls that… idolaters defiled the daughter of Yaakov Avinu..."

Sometime around the year , the Rebbe entered the shul at 770, stood at the bima, and announced that he had just come from speaking with his father-in-law, the Frierdiker Rebbe, who had asked him to convey the following message: "My father (the Rebbe Rashab) was with me and asked, 'How does it come to pass that in your beis midrash people talk during kerias haTorah?' "

CONSIDER THIS! Why shouldn’t one talk during davening: for the sake of others, for himself or for HaShem?

RABBI CHAIM CHAZAN

A SIDE JOB FOR A ROVIs it permissible for a person in a position of spiritual authority (such as the rov of a community), whose salary is insufficient, to engage in a secular vocation on the side to supplement his income?

There is a fundamental dispute among the rishonim1 as to whether it is permissible at all to accept remuneration for studying or teaching Torah. Normative halacha as practiced today in virtually all communities allows rabbonim, teachers and kollel yungeleit to take salaries. Indeed, in our generations poskim2 actually discourage the once-held-virtuous practice of preferring to benefit by the toil of one’s own hands over using one’s Torah knowledge as a means to earn a livelihood. The rationale: Our minds and hearts are diminutive in comparison to those of previous generations and even with full time study we don’t manage to produce scholars like those of the past.

The Alter Rebbe writes in his Shulchan Aruch3: "One who is appointed as a leader of the community may not perform any labor himself in the presence of three people, so that his dignity will not be compromised. Instead, the community is charged with providing him with a respectable livelihood, so that he will not need to perform manual work at all. Indeed, they must make him wealthy. This is derived from the description of the kohen godol as being 'the most prominent of his brethren,' which is interpreted as a charge to 'make him prominent due to the wealth of his brethren.'' This principle applies to community leaders in all generations and in all regions4."

Poskim5 include publicly-known non-manual labor such as work as an accountant or musician in this prohibition. There is a dispute6 among poskim as to whether work in private on a permanent basis is permissible.

[It should be noted: According to the above-mentioned Rishonim who prohibit taking money for dispensing Torah knowledge, the prohibition for a rov to labor must apply only to work beyond the needs of his livelihood,7 or they may possibly hold that private labor is permissible].

REBBETZIN MENUCHA ROCHELRebbetzin Menucha Rochel, the daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe, was born on Yud Tes Kislev in the year when the Alter Rebbe was freed from prison. She married Reb Yaakov Kuli Slonim and later moved to Chevron in Eretz Yisroel. She was a very saintly woman, to whom many mofsim are attributed, and would often have people come to her home, seeking her blessing and advice. She passed away of the 24th of Shvat v(1888) and is buried in Chevron.

While preparing to travel to Eretz Yisroel, Rebbetzin Menucha Rochel went to the Tzemach Tzedek and expressed her fear of travel, being that it was then winter and she would perhaps fall sick from the rain. The Rebbe replied, “No worries! You will travel between the rain drops!” For the rest of her life, not a drop of rain ever fell on her!

They began their journey from Lubavitch, traveling to Shklov, where they changed wagons which would take them further. Upon his return to Lubavitch, the wagon driver, who had been hired for the first leg of the journey, related to all about his wonderful trip from Lubavitch to Shklov. Not one drop of rain had fallen on his wagon! Unfortunately, he had not been so lucky on his return trip, when he was bombarded with loads of “tzoros” from all the rain and mud.

(This wagon driver would always pride himself with this story. The Rebbe Maharash once told him, “Listen, the goy who drove the Baal Shem Tov was also part of the kefitsas haderech, yet he still remained the same goy…”)

During this time period, there was a group of bandits in Chevron called “The Black Hand,” who would break into Yiddishe homes, robbing and plundering, cursing and threatening all the while. This carried on, until one day the group leader’s wife was having difficulty giving birth and both she and the baby where in grave danger. Having no other choice, the chief bandit sent a message to the home of Rebbetzin Menucha Rochel pleading for a blessing. She sent back a message that if he would cease his wicked activities against the Yidden, everything would be alright. The goy swore that he would stop at once, and hurried home, to thankfully discover that his wife had given birth to a boy. Thus, the Yidden of Chevron were able to live at ease, without fear.

A MOMENT WITH THE REBBE

THE OHEL IS WARM For hours on end, both in the scorching sun and in the heavy snow, the Rebbe would stand at the Ohel, davening for klal Yisroel.

Understandably enough, elder chassidim often begged the Rebbe to watch over his health, and make these visits shorter and less frequent.

On one such occasion, on Shabbos Parshas Vayikro 5727 (1967), a delegation of elder chassidim, headed by the venerable mashpia, Reb Shmuel Levitin, entered the Rebbe's study, and explained that because of the extreme cold at the Ohel, they were anxious about the Rebbe's wellbeing.

The Rebbe would not hear of it.

“I cannot work without going to the Ohel," he said. "I must carry the load. And as to your claim that it is cold at the Ohel, ask Reb Zalman Duchman (who was one of the delegation). He goes there often, and he'll assure you that it's very warm there…”

Breakthrough in Iran talks might be terrible for Israel but wonderful for NetanyahuDespite widespread criticism, news of an impending deal could turn PM’s Congress speech into a dramatic, Hollywood-style closing argument.

In the coming weeks, the Obama administration has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deliver a potential coup-de-grace to Benjamin Netanyahu’s electoral prospects. What it needs to do is make sure that nuclear talks with Iran plunge into crisis a few days before Netanyahu’s controversial speech to Congress; that would be tantamount to pulling the political rug out from under him.

Picture it: 48 hours before the Israeli prime minister goes to Capitol Hill to lambast a U.S. administration and other world powers who are “galloping ahead” to a “dangerous agreement” with Tehran, American negotiators announce a breakdown in talks. “We won’t give in to Iran’s excessive demands,” John Kerry or someone similar will announce. “Israel’s security is paramount to the president, no matter what some of its leaders may say, and we will not place the Jewish state in danger.”

Netanyahu would be left dangling in the air, for the entire world, including Israeli voters, to see. Here he is, playing footsy with the Republicans and John Boehner, breaching protocol and otherwise badmouthing the White House and the Democrats, upsetting American Jews and confounding the most supportive of media pundits – all in the name of defending Israel from a “bad agreement,” which, it seems, Obama had no intention of signing? Coming to Congress under such circumstances, Netanyahu would look ridiculous, as some would say, or like something that rhymes with muck, as Yiddish speakers might have it. What would he tell Congress? “Oops”?

At the same time, however, a contrary scenario – which seems much more plausible, if you listened to Obama’s press conference with Angela Merkel on Monday – could very well produce

The Dog, the Fish and the Dream

Rabbi Nachman of Kosov had a relative named Rabbi Yudel* of Chudnov who

was also a follower of the Baal Shem Tov.

Rabbi Yudel was careful not to accept favors of others. He preferred to provide

for himself from his own work, running an iron ore business. Once, Rabbi Yudel

went to check on one of his iron ore mines. Being a long way from his home, he

decided to spend the Shabbat in a small village near the mine. He asked Reb Meir,

a local householder in that village, if he could spend the Shabbat with him.

Reb Meir answered, “Rabbi Yudel, it would be my honor if you would be my guest for this

Shabbat. However, I don’t have any fish or meat for you to eat at the Shabbat meals. To my

knowledge, no one has caught a fish here lately. And while I do have some meat that can

be prepared, you being a chasid, won’t be able to eat it because you didn’t have a chance to

examine the knife used by the shochet.” [In those days, the chasidim were very careful to

check the knife used by the kosher-slaughterer to be sure the edge of the knife blade was

razor sharp and free of any knicks that would render the meat of the slaughtered animal

unkosher.-ed.]

Reb Meir continued, “Rabbi Yudel, I suggest that you journey to the next village where a

certain wealthy man lives. He is an old acquaintance of mine and I know that he’ll be very

pleased to host you for the Shabbat. He has his own shochet and will be able to provide fish

and meat that will meet your standards.”

Rabbi Yudel decided to follow Reb Meir’s advice and started to walk on the road towards

the next village where the wealthy man lived. The road connecting the two villages passed

through a large pond that one had to cross to go from one village to the other. Usually, the

water in the pond was quite shallow. But after a strong rain or in the spring after the snow

melted, the water in the pond became much deeper. When Rabbi Yudel reached the pond,

he wasn’t aware that strong spring rains had caused the pond water to be exceptionally deep.

Just as Rabbi Yudel was about to step into the pond and cross to the other side, a dog

jumped in. The dog started howling from fear; it couldn’t swim so it was starting to drown.

The howling of the drowning dog upset Rabbi Yudel so much that he began to shed tears.

After this experience, Rabbi Yudel decided that the water was too deep for him to continue

his way to the next village. So he returned to the village that he had just left. When Reb

Meir saw him he asked in wonderment, “Rabbi, I thought you were going to the next town

to celebrate the Shabbat.”

diametrically opposite results. The closer the P5+1 powers appear to be to a nuclear agreement in the days before Netanyahu is scheduled to take to the podium on Capitol Hill, the more rational and justifiable Netanyahu’s speech will start to seem.

Many people will have grown tired by then of the ongoing sniping, bickering and debate over the propriety of the speech, and focus instead on its contents. Possibly that is what Netanyahu himself believes, as he reiterated Monday that he has no intention of canceling his speech.

For many years, Netanyahu has been touted, justifiably or not, as a leader who has almost singlehandedly rallied the world to confront Iran’s nuclear ambitions. If the negotiations with Tehran start to seem like a done deal, many Israelis – indeed, many Americans – could maintain that he has earned the right to make one last closing argument before a verdict is handed down – and his life’s work is demolished.

Addicts of Gregory Peck’s rendering of Atticus Finch’s closing remarks in “To Kill a Mockingbird” or Matthew McConnaughey’s in “A Time to Kill” could come to savor Netanyahu’s dramatic last stand, even if they aren’t convinced by it.

That’s why for Netanyahu the politician, a deal that seems imminent as he heads to Washington at the beginning of March would be nothing less than a godsend. Discussion of the merits or demerits of the deal would take center stage, while the details of Netanyahu’s diplomatic misbehavior would fade into the background.

More significantly, and probably more importantly from Netanyahu’s point of view – regardless of how well he does in his speech, oratorically speaking – the Israeli media is bound to focus obsessive attention on the emerging deal with Iran throughout the final weeks of the Israeli election campaign.

This would undoubtedly work in Netanyahu’s favor: he is, after all, “Mr. Iran.” The first rush of emotional reactions in Israel to news of an impending deal would almost certainly be alarmist, suspicious and negative, and Netanyahu would be the first to profit.

Then there won’t be enough time left before the March 17 vote for Israelis to ask themselves what Netanyahu could have done differently and how he might have averted this disastrous deal that he is now railing against: How much more leeway he might have had if he hadn’t antagonized and alienated the president or taken sides in America’s partisan politics; how much influence Netanyahu might have maintained with European leaders if had at least tried to keep up appearances of engaging in a serious peace process with the Palestinians; how many credible demands he could have made that would bolster Israel’s security if he had linked progress with the Palestinians to an acceptable deal with Iran.

But Netanyahu wanted to have his cake and eat it, to extend his credit in every arena but never go bankrupt, to burn his bridges but then walk over them as if nothing had happened. He refused to engage the Palestinians, continued to expand settlements, nixed a deal on Gaza, thumbed his nose at Europe, treated the U.S. president as if he was a junior member of some anti-Zionist party and then cried foul when the world chose to ignore him.

Some might consider his behavior shortsighted chutzpah, but if a last-minute deal with Iran turns Netanyahu’s Congress speech into a climactic, Hollywood-style ratings-bonanza – and if it then wins him the election – it will once again be Netanyahu who will be laughing all the way back to the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem. ▪

Rabbi Yudel replied, “When I reached the pond, I didn’t realize how deep the water is at this time

of the year. Just then, a dog jumped into the pond. Unfortunately, it couldn’t swim and it drowned.

It saved my life! Thank G-d. But the howling of the drowning dog upset me so much that I couldn’t

continue, so I decided to return here for Shabbat.”

Reb Meir said, “Rabbi Yudel, of course you’re always welcome to stay with me but what will you eat

for the Shabbat meals?”

Rabbi Yudel asked, “Could you please see if there is any chance at all that you might get a fish for

the Shabbat meals?”

Reb Meir requested a few of the local villagers to try extra hard to catch a few fish. They agreed.

Almost miraculously, they returned that very afternoon with an unusually large pike.

When Reb Meir saw the fish, he said in amazement, “In all the years I’ve lived here, I’ve never seen

such a large fish.” The villagers that caught the fish nodded their heads in agreement.

That day, being Friday, Reb Meir’s wife prepared several sumptuous meals for the Shabbat with

the fish.

Later that night, Rabbi Yudel was sitting at the Shabbat table with Reb Meir and his family. After

making Kiddush, eating the Shabbat dinner and singing several Shabbat songs, Reb Meir and his

family left the table to go to sleep.

Rabbi Yudel stayed at the table to study a holy Torah book, as was his custom before going to sleep.

Suddenly, a strong feeling of tiredness came over him and he put his head down on the table to rest.

After a few short minutes, he fell into a deep sleep.

During this sleep, he had a vivid dream in which his departed father appeared and spoke to him.

“My son, I was reincarnated as that fish you were eating tonight. Do you remember that man I

always spoke so strongly against because he was an informer against our Jewish brethren? Well, he

was reincarnated as the dog that you saw drown in the pond. He finally made up for his behavior

as an informer when he drowned to save you.”

Rabbi Yudel’s father continued speaking in the dream, “I was reincarnated as the fish because I

publicly condemned this informer. As the Torah says, ‘You shall not bear a sin on his account.’* My

son, the tears you shed when the dog howled as he drowned atoned for me. Please be careful how

you eat the fish. Be sure to hold the proper intentions in your mind. This will help elevate my soul.” ▪

Biographical note: Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer [of blessed memory: 18 Elul 5458- 6 Sivan 5520

(Aug. 1698 - May 1760 C.E.)], the Baal Shem Tov [“master of the good Name”-often referred to

as “the Besht” for short], a unique and seminal figure in Jewish history, revealed his identity as an

exceptionally holy person, on his 36th birthday, 18 Elul 5494 (1734 C.E.), and made the until-then

underground Chasidic movement public. He wrote no books, although many claim to contain

his teachings. One available in English is the excellent annotated translation of Tzava’at Harivash,

published by Kehos.
