The Swastika Controversy in RVC SchoolsBy Ellis Simon

Social ActionBy Jay Abrahams, Chairperson

The Rockville Centre community became enmeshed in a controversy over hate symbols and free ex-pressions this spring that members of the B’nai Sholom Beth-David family responded to at a School Board meeting and in the local newspaper. In an eighth grade art class at South Shore Middle School, two students created works depicting the horrors of the Nazi regime that featured images of the swastika. They were included in a class exhibit and hung for several weeks until parents of Jewish students complained to the school board. After they were removed, the school board held a public forum on the matter at which members took responsibility and apologized for the incident and promised reforms. But the controversy did not end there. The Rockville Centre Herald criticized the board’s decision, calling it censorship. “The swastika may make some people uncomfortable, but censorship is never the answer,” it said. The editorial prompted a flurry of letters to the editor disagreeing or agreeing with the newspaper. “If I were to display art using the “N” word”, or using a derogatory sign or word offensive to gays, would that be OK in the name of freedom of speech?” wrote Rabbi Diamond. “Certain things are simply just too evil to gain anything positive from.” “If there was better understanding and sensitivity to what seeing a swastika in our schools means to members of our Rockville Centre community, the artwork would not have hung for several weeks without an outcry,” wrote Temple Past President Herb Friend. The brouhaha taught an important lesson. As schools nurture students’ creativity, they need to be mindful of the sensitivities of members of a diverse community. Just like the Confederate flag, the swas-tika, too, can evoke feelings of pain, intimidation and hatred.

I am pleased to announce the formation of a new Social Action Committee, which shall have the responsibility (and, indeed mitzvah) of bringing to our Congregation’s attention issues and news of relevance and importance to not just our local Jewish community, but also to our national community and to C’lal Yisroel in general. A big “Yasher Koach” to Men’s Club president Jason Greenberg for inviting representatives of Ezer Mizion to speak to our Board at its July meeting. Ezer Mizion is the largest Jewish International Bone Marrow Registry in the world (and the fifth largest overall.) Over 2,000 lives have been saved by the Registry. The President’s CornerBy Nanci Moskowitz

I hope you have been enjoying this summer. The fact that the High Holy Days are a month later than last year gives us all the opportunity to spend some extra time having fun in the sun. Not so here at Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David. Come into the Temple on almost any day or night, at any time, and you will see lots of activity. There are early morning minyanim, classes with the Rabbi, Shabbat Services and Sunday morning minyan. Then there are committee meetings - High Holy Days, Financial, House, School Board, Executive Committee and Board meetings. From the Knitting Club to the Book Club, the Yiddish Club and Mah-Jongg, there is something for everyone. Come join us!! Serve on a committee!! Join an activity. If there is something you would like to do, speak with me and we will try our best to accommodate you. We are here for you…in sickness and health…in good times and bad. Come on down!! I wish you, your families and friends a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

Message from the Rabbi - Life LessonsBy Rabbi Howard Diamond

In the Parsha of Matos, as the nation prepares to cross the Jordan River and enter into the Holy Land, the Torah records, in great detail, the account of the Israelite war against the Midianite nation. As they prepare for battle, Moshe is commanded to take a thousand men from each tribe to go out to fight. A thousand (men) per tribe, a thousand per tribe, for all the tribes of Israel shall you send to the army (Bamidbar 31:4). According to one opinion in the Midrash, since it says three times (twice in v.4 and once in v.5), each tribe actually sent three thousand men to battle. Hence, the total tally of men sent to war was: 12,000 to fight, 12,000 to guard the supplies, and 12,000 to pray. From here we learn the importance of prayer in battle. It is not enough to go out to war and fight; we must always keep our eyes and hearts upward, towards our Father in heaven. Yisrael trusts in Hashem. He is their Help and their Shield (Ps. 115:9). A thousand (men) per tribe, a thousand per tribe, for all the tribes of Israel shall you send to the army (Num. 31:4). The Ba’al Ha Turim teaches that this verse begins with an alef and ends with an alef to teach you that all of them (those who went out to battle) were of one heart, dedicated to their Father in heaven. From here we learn the impor-tance of unity in battle. It is not enough for each man to go out for himself, to himself, but each man must be united with his brother in arms, both of them dedicated to their cause, fighting I’shem Shomayim – for the sake of Heaven. And Israel camped there opposite the mountain (Lev. 19:2), Rashi: like one man with one heart. The unity of Torah must accompany us through all times in life, in all situations, in every instance. A thousand (men) per tribe, a thousand per tribe, for all the tribes of Israel shall you send to the army (Num. 31:4).The Ba’al Ha Turim (Num. 31:6) teaches: And Moshe sent them to war; but did not send the princes of the tribes out to battle, in order not embarrass the tribe of Shimon, whose prince (Zimri) was (previously) killed (by Pinchas, when Zimri was publicly sinning with a Midianite woman!). Nevertheless, to spare the tribe of Shimon shame, Moshe did not send the tribal leaders out to battle. From here, we learn the importance of respecting the dignity of our fellow man. Despite the fact that the prince of Shimon brought punishment upon himself with his lewd and promiscuous behavior, Moshe wanted to spare his tribe any undue shame. From all of the above, we learn how Jews must always behave in battle….and in life. Our eyes must always be turned upward in prayer; we must be united in our hearts, as we go forth in life; and we must be sensitive, kind and caring to the needs and feelings of fellow Jews. Of her son Eliraz, (1978-2010) HY”D (Maj. Eliraz Peretz, 32 years old), who fell in battle in the Gaza Strip, Miriam Peretz writes, “I have a feeling that Eliraz’ last thought was of the Jewish people, that even in the last moment of his life, he was occupied with the great mission that stood before him, not with private thoughts. That’s my feeling, but in his pants pocket we found drawings that his children made for him. He had taken them with him on the mission. In another pocket was a book of Tehillim psalms. “When they brought me Eliraz’ tallit, I sniffed it. It smelled of the army, of the grease they use on the rifles. I pictured Eliraz at the height of his holiness. That grease symbolized the struggle of our spirit and faith: the tallit that belonged to a combat soldier enfolded a book of Tehillim and a rifle.” Prayer, unity and sensitivity…Battle Lessons…Life Lessons.

Temple FirstBy Larry Mack

I hope you are all getting in the swing of the start of the new school year. So many new things are happening, and our Temple life continues to sprout new connections and new growth. At this time of year we will be initiating the Kol Nidre Appeal over the next few weeks. Please expect a call from one of the committee members, and remember, this is the biggest financial appeal for any Temple. Please try to open your wallets as much as you can. Remember, a great deal of the actual operating costs are paid for by our donations, and our ongoing and expanding programs need all the funding we can give. We did a great job last year, but I must ask that you all try to do even better this year. A wonderful holiday to all of you, and remember Temple First!

Upcoming TempleEvents

By Barry Hochhauser, Fundraising

The fundraising committee has been plan-ning exciting events beginning after the High Holy Days. We will end 2016 with a bang. Save the dates and details to follow! We have already started planning for 2017. Look for announcements regarding a Wine Tast-ing and Art Auction, a Limited Edition Raffle, and a Siyum HaTorah, where we will be repairing the Torah

BE A PART OF OUR AMAZING SISTERHOOD! 2016-2017 dues are just $40.

What is Sisterhood? By Maxine Geller & Caryn Morgenbesser, Sisterhood Co-Presidents We are women of all ages, in all stages of life, who come together to make meaningful new friendships in a relaxed social environment. From a combination of our membership dues and our main fundraising events, including New Year’s Greetings, Purim Bags and sales from our Judaica Shop, we are able to implement our programs, contribute to our Synagogue’s wish list and help support our local and Jewish world charities. Year to year, Sisterhood provides the funding for babysitting during the High Holy Day Services, gifts for students who become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, and packages sent out by the College Commission to our students. We also support the Jewish Theological Seminary through Torah Fund. We financially support the maintenance of our cardiac defibrillator and oxygen tank. This year, we have purchased Women’s Tallit for our Sanctuary.

Whether you come to meetings, attend programs, help us organize or plan events/fundraisers, or just pay your dues, YOU are choosing to support Sisterhood and all we do.Your level of participation is up to you, but please remember that a dynamic, warm and welcoming group of women awaits you. Please join and experience firsthand how much FUN you can have with Sisterhood. Wishing all a Happy and Healthy New Year! From the Learning CenterBy Dan Seid, Educational Director

Many Middle School, High School and College students require a completion of community service hours for graduation and/or National Honor Society. I encourage all past and current Hebrew School students and their families to sign up to volunteer at the Jewish Learning Center (JLC) throughout the 2016-2017 academic year. Adults are encouraged to volunteer as well!We have a vast amount of opportunities for volunteering, and I can always work with someone’s schedule and abili-ties. Some volunteer opportunities include: Assisting in our JAMM, 3-4 year old class (Sundays) Assisting in our Primary K-1 class (Sundays) Assisting in our Art class (Sundays) Hebrew Reading Assistant (Sundays & Wednesdays) Kitchen/Breakfast/Snack monitor (Sundays & Wednesdays) Helping in the office (Sundays & Wednesdays) Junior Congregation Assistant (Friday evenings and Saturdays). Contact Dan for specific weeks available. Family Education Assistant (Some Sundays)

Hours of Hebrew School are Sunday 9am-Noon and Wednesdays 4:30-6:30pm, but I can work around anyone’s schedule because I am in the office 3-4 days per week and always welcome volunteers. Please contact me early to schedule a time to volunteer! If anyone has a suggestion for a different role to volun-teer, please contact me. Thank you for your continued service and commitment to your synagogue and school!

MembershipBy Nancy Hochhauser, Membership Chairman

Our members are our most valuable asset. Each and every one of us shares similar values. Together we build a stronger community. Whether we connect through prayer, learning, socializing or celebrating, we all think of Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David (CBS-BD) as our second home and want to share this feeling with others. As I embark as Membership Chairman, I have two goals. First, to create a “welcome wagon” committee that welcomes and informs new members of the variety of activities, committees, programs and classes that are available at CBS-BD. Second, get more members involved. If you are interested in a certain activity or program at the Temple, but aren’t sure how to participate, please send me an email ([email protected]) and I will make sure we put you in touch with the right people. Lastly and more importantly, if you know of a Jewish family who is new in town or simply looking for a new synagogue, invite them to a Saturday morning service or a social event. Let them see firsthand that CBS-BD is a warm, welcoming synagogue family. On that note, Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David welcomes these new members:

Tikun Leyl Shavout

Our annual Tikun Leyl Shavuot took place on Saturday evening June 11th. It was a great evening for Torah discussion. Gerald Sidney, Martin Greenberg and Rabbi Diamond lead the discussions. Mass quantities of cheesecake were consumed. Sampson Engoren gave a brief explanation as to why we eat cheesecake. Hope to see you next year so we will need more cheesecake.

Highlighting OurUpcoming Bar & Bat Mitzvahs

By Terri Glass, MD

With the warm weather it is difficult to think about the upcoming seasons of autumn and winter and, of course, snowfall. School attendance is on the minds of all parents. However, many are waiting until Labor Day to consider future plans. The High Holy Days are probably only passing cogitations and Hebrew school registration is only a passing thought. Upcoming events, such as the presidential election in November, are always significant. As a volunteer in the Hebrew school art classes last year, the youngsters I assisted were already discussing the November 2016 presidential election. For upcoming Chai Lights I will be interviewing and writing a profile of bar and bat mitzvah candidates which will highlight accomplishments and introduce these young people to the entire congregation. Several are also students in the art classes in which I assist and some of the mothers were classmates of mine in Rabbi Diamond’s 2011-2012 post-Bat Mitzvah class.

An Open Letter to UJA and CBSBDBy Karen and Mark Skolnick

Many thanks to Congregation B’nai Sholom Beth-David for selecting us as UJA honorees this year. A special thanks also to Jack Friedman and Barry Hochhauser for their tremendous efforts in chairing this event and to Joel Greenberg for his kind words of introduction. Needless to say this honor was a proud moment in our lives and we are grateful for having had the privilege of representing our congregation. Our commitment to Jewish causes and our synagogue remain prime focal points in our lives. We recognize UJA’s programs as among the most valuable forces in the preservation of Jewish values, identity and our homeland. Through the years our association with our Temple and Jewish causes has served to solidify our connection to our Jewish identity. Once again, we are humbled by this honor.

Sisterhood Book ClubBy Muriel Smith

The women of our Sisterhood book discussion group continued to meet this summer. We chose The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom. This popular National Blue Ribbon Book was enjoyed by most of the members of our group. A sequel has been written by the author, titled Glory Over Everything, and just released this spring. The book discussion group meets monthly, the second Wednesday of each month. Any Sisterhood member is welcome.

Summer Happenings

Wedding Bells: Congratulations to Rabbi & Fran Diamond’s daughter, Temima, and newest son-in-law, Yehuda, - now Mr. & Mrs. Yehuda Joffe.

Ally Hochhauser and Marty Greenstein, B’nai Brith Youth Organization Regional staff (and son of Shoal) at the 2016-2017 BBYO Nassau/Suffolk Region Installation held at Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation. Ally was installed as the Region’s S’ganint officer. Rockville Centre has BBYO chapters for teens 14 and older that will begin meeting in the fall. For information, please see Ally!

Installation and Hebrew School Graduation on a lively Kaballah Shabbat: June 3rd, Can-tor Mendelson, a few of his buddies, his musi-cal parents, Learning Center Grads and a large crowd prepared to welcome the Sabbath and new officers of our Temple with music, singing and dance.

Israeli Scouts: We were pleased, once again, to welcome the Israeli Scouts Car-avan to our synagogue for a lively eve-ning of song and dance. Thanks to CeCe and Jack Friedman for their hard work arranging the visit and for obtaining housing for the scouts during their stay in Rockville Centre.

On Sunday morning, May 22nd our local Jewish community gathered together at Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David for a UJA fundraiser. Each synagogue chooses an honoree. We always get a great turn-out and make lots of money for UJA. This year our synagogue chose Karen and Mark Skolnick as our honorees. Joel Greenberg, a past president, was chosen to introduce the Skolnicks and presented them with their gift from the UJA for their synagogue and com-munity service.

Rockville Centre, NY

Cemetery BusinessBy Steven I. Friedman, MD, Chairman, Cemetery Committee

This year’s High Holy Day season is rapidly approaching and our thoughts and prayers include memories of our de-ceased parents and other family members and friends. We traditionally visit the graves of our dearly departed during this season, to remember and honor those who are no longer with us. As the Chairman of Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David’s Cemetery Committee, I wish to remind all congregants that the responsibility of maintaining family plots and individual graves at all our cemetery facilities rests with individual families and not the synagogue itself. The synagogue maintains all the common walkways and entrances to our dedicated sections at Montefiore Cemetery in Springfield Gardens, Queens, and the New Montefiore and Wellwood cemeteries in West Babylon. As in the past, graves are free, when the need arrives, as a benefit of membership in the synagogue. Spouses can pur-chase/reserve the gravesite immediately adjacent to their predeceased loved one for $1,000 per grave. At the last meeting of the Board of Trustees it was decided to increase the price we charge to purchase graves for future needs. This allows families to assess their needs for other non-synagogue family and friends. It also allows one to pick the site of burial rather than burial at the next available grave in the row. One can pick a site close to the road that runs along the boundaries of our cemetery properties or adjacent to a particular planting or tree, if so desired. Presently the cost per grave is $1,000. However, the cost per grave is scheduled to increase. We have one or two Family 8 grave plots available for purchase. We have countless other purchase opportunities for those with lesser needs. Please feel free to contact the Temple office, 764-4100, and I will make arrangements to meet with you and discuss your purchase op-tions. On behalf of the other members of the Cemetery Committee and my family, I want to wish all the members of Congre-gation B’nai Sholom-Beth David a healthy, prosperous and joyous New Year.

A few weeks ago Steve Lander agreed to take on the responsibility of Calendar Chairman. He is the go-to person when events need to be scheduled. If you, your com-mittee or your group are planning an event – any event - you need to contact Steve to make sure that it is not in conflict with other scheduled events. Steve will add the event to the Chai Lights calendar and to a calendar hanging in the hallway opposite the office. Text or call Steve at 516-637-0432; email [email protected].
