HELP AJ PROVIDE CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR KOSAIR KIDS WITH CANCER

Adath Jeshurun is collecting donations to help make a brighter Christmas holiday for children in the Kosair Children’s Hospital Cancer Care Unit on Christmas Day. Donations are needed to purchase Christmas

gifts, as well as to provide snacks for children and families on the Oncology floor at Kosair. Please send your donation in any amount payable to “Adath Jeshurun” with a notation on the check that says “Kosair.” Donations may also be made online at www.adathjeshurun.com/kosair.

J-HARMONY REDUX – THEY’RE COMING BACK!

Mark your calendar for the 2017 AJ Music Festival on Sunday evening, February 19th at 7:00 p.m. By popular demand, we have invited back the two a capella groups who blew us away at the 2015

Music Festival. Our guest performers are uber-talented college students in the groups “Staam” from Washington University, and “Hooshir” from Indiana University. They rocked us the first time; they'll astound us the second! Ticket information will be available soon.

LOOKING FOR A MEANINGFUL RESOLUTION FOR 2017?

How about resolving to attend an AJ minyan just one day per month? That’s just 12 times per year! Our AJ minyan morning service takes place at 7:15 a.m.

Monday – Friday, 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, and 8:45 a.m. on Sunday. Our afternoon service takes place every afternoon at 5:45 p.m. (Sunday afternoon only at KI.) The services are short, but meaningful and the minyan “regulars” will welcome you with open arms. Please join us!

If you would like to sponsor a tax-deductible Kiddush lunch at AJ, please contact Molly Evancho at [email protected] or call 458-5359. You can also obtain more information on the AJ website by visiting:

www.adathjeshurun.com/kiddushsponsor

The Congregation gratefully acknowledges the generosity of the following for their sponsorship of the Shabbat Kiddush lunches:

• December 3, 2016 – Sponsored by John & Renee Rothschild in honor of their 74th wedding anniversary.

• December 10, 2016 – Sponsored by the Julie Olson Shabbat Scholar Fund.

• December 17, 2016 – Sponsored by Bernie Faller in honor of Rhoda’s 70th birthday.

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEESBy AJ President, Dr. Armand Rothschild

Chanukah Candle-Lighting Blessings

One candle is added to the menorah each night. The first night, December 24th, light only the shammus (the candle in the center) and one Chanukah candle. By the eighth night, all of the candles should be lit. Candles should be added to the menorah from right to left (like Hebrew writing). The shammus candle is lit first. While holding the shammus candle, recite the following blessings.

Blessing over Candles ---------------------------------------------------------------

Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam Praised are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe

asher kidishanu b'mitz'votav v'tzivanu Who has sanctified us by your commandments and commanded us

l'had'lik neir shel Chanukah. (Amein) to kindle the lights of Chanukah. (Amen)

Blessing for Chanukah --------------------------------------------------------------

Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam Praised are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe

she'asah nisim la'avoteinu bayamim haheim baziman hazeh. (Amein) Who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days at this time.

Shehechiyanu (first night only)---------------------------------------------------

Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu, melekh ha'olam Praised are you, Lord, our God, sovereign of the universe

Shehechiyanu v'kiyimanu v'higi'anu laz'man hazeh. (Amein) who has kept us alive, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season. (Amen)

After reciting the blessings, use the shammus to light the Chanukah candles from left to right (newest to oldest.)

KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE!

Several years ago, Adath Jeshurun members Phyllis & Michael Shaikun learned first-hand the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. They were

fortunate enough to live to tell about their near-tragedy. Now they would like to educate others about the importance of installing carbon monoxide monitoring devices. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless lethal killer that can be detected by the proper placement of carbon monoxide detectors in the home. The Shaikuns have generously endowed the Phyllis & Michael Shaikun Tikkun Olam Fund to underwrite the cost of carbon monoxide detectors to help make them affordable for everyone. Carbon monoxide detectors are available in the synagogue office for $10 each. To obtain a carbon monoxide detector, stop by the synagogue office during business hours. Please bring exact change, a check payable to AJ, or a Mastercard or Visa.
