Long-Time Bookkeeper RetiresBy Rachel Guinsburg

Margaret Richards has retired from her po-sition as Bookkeeper at Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David following twenty-nine years of dedicated ser-vice to our synagogue. During these years, Margaret worked with different rabbis, can-

tors, office, facility and learning center staff, presidents, board members and congregants. Her loyalty and devo-tion to our congregation has guided us through difficult and joyous times. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you very much for all Margaret has done during her long career with our temple. We pray that Margaret and her entire family remain in good health and continue to go from strength to strength, enjoying many happy years of retirement and spending well-deserved time with family and friends.

Message from the RabbiBy Rabbi Howard Diamond

Let’s look back on this past year. As individuals, all of us have had some good things happen; all of us have had some not-so-good things happen. All of us have done some things that bring us closer to G-d (mitzvos); all of us have done some things that have distanced us from G-d (sins.) As a community, I look back and reflect on some truly wonderful events: the Hanukah celebration, community Pesach Seders, the college student Shabbat dinner, and Pu-rim. Of course, we’ve had some truly sad events: deaths, people moving to Florida, etc. All of us have great hopes for this coming year…as individuals, as families, as a commu-nity, and, of course, for Klal Yisroel. As we resolve to dedicate ourselves this holiday season (Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Succot and Simchas Torah) to embrace the mitzvos and using those mitzvos as tools to-ward getting closer to G-d (more spiritual) then, not only will this coming year be one of good health, prosperity and success, but, in fact, all of the ominous clouds gathering around our home – Israel – will miraculously vanish. Let me take this opportunity to wish all of you, from my family to you and yours, Shana Tova. A Good Year for Health, Prosperity and Happiness.

Honoring Our Deceased Loved OnesBy Steven I. Friedman, Cemetery Committee Chairman

This year’s High Holy Day season is now a fond memory and our thoughts and prayers include mem-ories of our deceased parents and other family members and friends. We traditionally visit the graves of our dearly departed during this season to remember and honor those who are no longer with us. As the Chairman of Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David’s Cemetery Committee, I wish to re-mind all congregants that the responsibility of maintaining Family Plots and Individual Graves at all our cemetery facilities rests with individual families and not the synagogue itself. The synagogue maintains all the common walkways and entrances to our dedicated sections at Mon-tefiore Cemetery in Springfield Gardens, Queens, NY, and the New Montefiore and Wellwood Cemeter-ies in West Babylon, NY. When the two congregations merged several years ago we adopted the Constitution of Temple B’nai Sholom as our guiding document. Congregation Beth David had a perquisite that included maintenance of all the graves, paid for by the synagogue, that was then billed to the individual families. This practice is no longer in effect. Therefore, please make all the necessary arrangements for grave maintenance with the cemeteries themselves, i.e. perpetual or seasonal care. In the alternative, you can individually tend to the graves yourselves. Here are the telephone numbers of the cemeteries so that appropriate arrangements can be made:Montefiore Cemetery, Springfield Gardens, NY - 718-528-1700; New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, NY - 631-249-7000; Wellwood Cem-etery, West Babylon, NY - 631-249-2530. As always, a grave will be available to members in good standing during your time of need. However, you can purchase graves, in a location of your choosing, at this time, as well. Graves cost $1,000 apiece, and purchase can be arranged through the Temple office.

Thank You - Todah Rabah

“The High Holiday prayers state that God has inscribed a judgment against all who have sinned, but teshuvah (repentance), tefilah (prayer) and tzedakah can reverse the decree. Tzedakah is a good deed that is made in partnership with God. Accord-ing to Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), the word tzedakah comes from the word tzedek, which means righteous…Kabbalists explain that tzedakah is a partnership between the righteous and God, acts of tzedakah are permeated with God’s goodness, and giving tzedakah can make the world a better place.” (From Tzedakah: More Than Charity by Lisa Katz at www.judiasm.about.com/cd/beliefsa/tzedakah_what.htm). We acknowledge, and thank you for, the many recent donations made to the funds of Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David.

By CeCe Friedman

The South Shore Section of NCJW (National Council of Jewish Women) sponsors an evening book group that meets once a month. We have an excellent facilitator who is a retired professor of English/Women’s Studies and brings a world of knowledge to each discussion. At our first meeting of the Fall/Winter session we discussed Go Set a Watchman, with references to To Kill a Mockingbird, both by Harper Lee. The schedule for the next three meetings is:

Nov. 16 The Paying Guests, by Sarah Waters Dec. 7 Let Him Go, by Larry Watson Jan. 2016 My Notorious Life, by Kate Manning (date to be decided) We welcome new members who love to read worth-while and challenging books and discussing them with like-minded people. A plaque in the synagogue lobby next to the coat check room memorializes five members of Temple B’nai Sholom who were victims of a great disaster. However, the plaque does not mention what brought such sorrow to the congregation and the entire Rockville Centre community. The “great disaster” was the worst wreck in the history of the Long Island Railroad. It occurred 65 years ago on the evening of Wednesday, November 22, 1950, the night before Thanksgiving, between Kew Gardens and Jamaica on the main line from Penn Station. That evening, the 6:09 train to Hempstead stalled when its air brakes locked and the engineer could not release them. The 6:13 train to Babylon, traveling on the same track at a high speed, slammed into the stopped train around 6:32 p.m., causing 78 fatalities and 363 injuries. The five members of the congregation killed in the accident were Michael Bloomberg, Joseph Ellner, Herbert Hyams, Abraham Shaefitz and Louis Stoloff. They were survived by their wives and ten children. Rockville Centre, as a whole, was especially hard hit by the disaster. Besides the five B’nai Sholom members, 14 other residents of the village lost their lives. In all, nearly one in four victims lived in Rockville Centre. Coming just eight months after another LIRR catastrophe occurred in Rockville Centre that claimed 32 lives, the community was devastated and outraged. In an editorial, the Rockville Centre News & Owl newspaper called the LIRR “the number one railroad killer in the nation.” The two accidents led to a number of reforms to improve LIRR safety and operations, culminating with its acquisition by New York State in 1966. Today, the date November 22 is remembered mainly for another tragedy that occurred 13 years later, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Remembering a Great DisasterBy Ellis Simon

Editor’s Note: Ever wonder about the artifacts you see in the Temple’s lobby? The Torah Scroll behind glass, the silver objects in the glass showcase, the plaque next to the cloakroom? Here’s our first attempt to research and write about them. If you have any information about these objects, please share with the Chai Lights staff and, in turn, we will share with the congregation.

B’nai Sholom-Beth David’s New Playground

On Wednesday October 7th, St. Mark’s nursery school, along with Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David, had a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the unveiling of the new playground.

Mayor Murray of Rockville Centre and Rabbi Diamond both spoke. It was a beautiful day and everyone enjoyed themselves.

JLC Hebrew School at Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David is rocking, rolling, and JAMMing into the 2015-2016 school year. This year we have restored and expanded our JAMM (Jewish Art, Music and Movement) program for 3-4 year olds. Children have begun an early childhood Jewish education with experienced early childhood educator Allyson Casden. Students have been engaged in experiential learning with a focus on project based learning to begin teaching them Aleph-Bet, Jewish Holidays, customs, and religion at an early age. Student and parent feedback from the program has been excep-tionally positive. Our Tel Aviv (7th Grade) students have been working with Mrs. Cener and Rabbi Diamond on a curriculum that teaches prayers, holidays, and customs with a focus on community service. Teens in this class will be engaged throughout the year with hands-on community service opportunities teaching them that there is more to being Jewish than ritual obligations. Jews have a required mitzvah of Tikkun Olam, or making the world a better place. Our teens in this class will be exposed to communities, organizations, and people that will engage them in real world opportunities to make the world a better place. Students and families from the Jerusalem class will be experiencing an unforgettable family program with educator extraordinaire Jill Kaplan on Sunday October 25, from 10:30-11:45. The Program is entitled Chayei Sarah, and will expose families to the life of one of our famous matriarchs. However, details to this program are top-secret. Be sure not to miss out on the fun and surprise of this family event.

On September 20th, Rabbi Diamond hosted a Barbecue for students of Central Hebrew High School that also included members of Oceanside Jewish Center. OJC Rabbi Mark Greenspan was in attendance. Dozens of students attended. There was music, great food, and an orientation about Central Hebrew School. Barry Goldberg did a fantastic job manning the grill and Chumi Diamond had a great hamburger recipe. Thanks to Rabbi Diamond and Rebbetzin Fran Diamond for their hospitality.

Rabbi Diamond led a sizeable crowd of congregants across the foot-bridge that spans Peninsula Boulevard from North Village Avenue to Hemp-stead Lake State Park on Monday, Sep-tember 14th, the first day of Rosh Ha-shanah, to perform Taschlich, which is usually done next to a body of water. The goal of Tashlich, from the Hebrew word meaning “to cast”, is to throw both our sins, which can be represent-ed by bread crumbs, and Satan into the Heavenly sea. After the Tashlich prayer, clothes are shaken and pockets turned inside out as a tangible act to achieve the spiritual goal of shaking sins from our soul.
