Meet our new Executive Director...

We  are  thrilled  to  announce  Zim  Zimmerman  as  the  new  ExecuPve  Director  of  Camp  Mountain  Chai  and  Alpine  Meadows  Retreat  Center.  Zim  joins  us  aJer  spending  the  past  11  years  as  the  director  of  Shwayder  Camp  located  in  the  majesPc  Rocky  Mountains  just  outside  of  Denver,  Colorado.  He  is  one  of  the

lucky  few  who  had  the  privilege  and  honor  to  direct  the  very  camp  he  aaended  as  both  a  camper  and  staff  member,  and  is  now  excited  to  bring  that  experience  to  bear  upon  the  success  of  CMC.    Preferring  smaller  environments,  the  size,  mission  and  personal  nature  of  Camp  Mountain  Chai  is  what  originally  caught  his  aaenPon  and  ulPmately  led  him  to  the  decision  to  become  part  of  the  CMC  team.

Zim  has  served  on  the  regional  board  of  the  American  Camp  AssociaPon  for  six  years  and  was  on  the  planning  commiaee  for  the  2011  ACA  naPonal  conference,  the  largest  yearly  gathering  of  camp  professionals  in  the  country.  An  avid  outdoorsman,  Zim  finds  solace  both  on  the  ski  slopes  and  backpacking  through  the  high  country.  Although  Zim  claims  to  have  no  rhythm,  he  currently  is  co-‐owner  of  a  dance  studio  in  Denver  with  his  fiancé,  (who  just  happens  to  be  a  professional  dancer)  KaPe.    Zim  and  Steve  have  also  known  each  other  for  the  past  four  years  and  are  excited  to  be  working  together.

Aside  from  his  lifelong  commitment  to  Jewish  summer  camping,  Zim  has  a  personal,  secondary  goal  of  converPng  the  world  to  the  delicious  wonders  of  jalapeño  and  pineapple  pizza.    We  wish  him  the  best  of  luck  with  this  endeavor!

Please  welcome  Zim  to  the  CMC  family  by  emailing  him  at  [email protected].

Our year-round staff has grown...by 11 feet! No, Sas & Steve are not suddenly taller since we

were last together, however the Camp Mountain Chai full-time family has grown,

and we’re excited to introduce to you the latest

members to our team.

Meet our new Communications and Program Director...

We  are  excited  to  announce  that  Jon  Bell  has  joined  the  Camp  Mountain  Chai  year  round  staff  as  our  CommunicaPons  &  Program  Director.  Jon  spent  11  summers  as  a  camper  and  counselor  at  Camp  Nebagamon,  in  the  great  Northwood’s  of  Wisconsin.  While  a  counselor,  Jon  directed  the  camp’s  swimming  and  archery  programs,  helped  lead  and  run  special  all  camp  days  and  facilitated  various  evening  programs.    Jon  leJ  the  camping  world  aJer  college  to  gain  a  variety  of  legal,  business  development  and  markePng  experience.  Having  never  lost  the  passion  for  the  overnight  camping  world,  however,  Jon  jumped  at  the  chance  to  join  the  CMC  family  on  a  full  Pme  basis.

Originally  from  Highland  Park,  Illinois,  Jon  earned  his  BA  in  History,  PoliPcal  Science  and  Badger  Football  from  the  University  of  Wisconsin-‐Madison,  and  a  JD  from  Loyola  University  Chicago  School  of  Law.  An  avid  runner,  soJball  &  volleyball  player,  Jon  finds  the  transiPon  from  the  Chicago  winters  to  the  300  plus  days  of  San  Diego  sun  to  be  “more  his  style”.  Jon  can’t  wait  to  get  up  to  camp  this  summer,  and  conPnue  his  lifelong  enthusiasm  in  a  growing  and  thriving  camp  environment.

Please  welcome  Jon  to  the  Camp  Mountain  Chai  family  by  emailing  him  at  [email protected].  Seriously,  he’s  furiously  scrambling  to  memorize  hundreds  of  camper  &  staff  names...send  him  a  line  saying  hi!

4th,  5th  &  6th  graders  from  San  Diego,  Los  Angeles,  Inland  Empire,  and  Palm  Desert  braved  the  drive  up  the  mountain  and  reports  of  wintry  weather  to  spend  a  fun-‐filled,  acPon-‐packed  weekend  at  camp!    Joined  by  5th  graders  from  the  San  Diego  Jewish  Academy,  campers  were  split  into  six  color  war  teams  for  the  weekend.    The  teams  spent  the  weekend  learning  about  the  Ten  Commandments  through  a  series  of  fiercely  compePPve  contests  including  Steal  the  Bacon  (kosher,  turkey  bacon,  of  course),  Paper  Bag  DramaPcs  and  Human  Baaleship.    The  teams  made  cheers  and  prepared  skits  to  perform  in  front  of  the  camp.  We  had  prepared  for  some  serious  winter  weather,  but  instead

were  surprisingly  treated  to  weather  not  all  that  different  from  what  we  leJ  behind:  plenty  of  sunshine,  with  temperatures  in  the  60s  during  the  day.    Not  to  worry,  the  campers  found  those  last  few  patches  of  snow  conveniently  shoveled

off  to  the  side,  and  found  plenty  of  Pme  in  an  otherwise  packed  schedule  to  play  in  it!  We  put  our  gloves  and  scarves  back  into  storage  and  parPcipated  in  summer  favorites  like  archery,  gaga,  soccer  and  our  ropes  course.    Before  we  knew  it,  the  weekend  was  over,  and  we  had  to  get  home  in  Pme  to  watch  the  Super  Bowl.    All  in  all,  a  great  Pme  was  had  by  all,  and  camp  spirit  was  evident  everywhere  you  looked,  making  us  all  the  more  excited  for  the  summer  ahead!

This past winter, 750+ Jewish young adults traveled to Israel on a URJ Kesher Taglit-Birthright Israel. Camp Mountain Chai partnered with URJ Kesher for our first-ever CMC Staff Birthright trip, and it was a huge success! Sas had the privilege of spending ten days in Israel with 47 amazing individuals; the perfect blend of CMC staff members (current and alum) and new friends from across the United States and Israel.

Our group traveled throughout the Holy Land, visiting beautiful cities and important religious sites, trying new foods, learning about the history of the Jewish people and the Jewish faith, and creating meaningful relationships with one another and with the land of Israel. The program was designed to allow the participants to explore Israel in a group setting while developing their individual identities and solidifying a connection to Judaism and the Jewish people.

The coming together of all these people, each searching for a new connection in their own way, only solidified the importance and value of Jewish experiential education – one of the principal tenets of what we do at camp. It was a fantastic opportunity to make new friends, and to spread the CMC magic across the world. We are thrilled to announce that four of our new friends from our birthright experience will be joining us on our CMC staff this summer!

We cannot wait for our new friends to join the CMC family, and we’re already excited and looking forward to next year’s Birthright experience… Israel 2014, here we come!

Meet some of our 2013 CMC Staff... Sarah Tagger,  General  Counselor  2012,  RETURNING  STAFF  MEMBER  2013Hi  everyone!  My  name  is  Sarah  Tagger  and  I  love  camp!  I  am  so  thankful  to  be  part  of  the  Camp  Mountain  Chai  Family  once  again.  Since  last  summer,  I’ve  embarked  on  my  freshman  year  at  the  University  of  California,  Santa  Barbara.  Classes  here  are  quite  challenging,  but  really  interesting  nonetheless!  During  my  Freshman  year  I  have  become  very  involved  in  both  Hillel  and  Chabad  here  at  UCSB.    The  exciting  thing  is  that  at  times  it  feels  just  like  being  at  camp,  there  are  so  many  fun  Jewish  activities  and  great  people  to  meet  at  UCSB!

In  my  free  time  I  enjoy  volunteering  for  a  few  different  organizations.    I  am  on  the  board  for  ASI,  American  Students  for  Israel,  which  has  provided  an  amazing  opportunity  for  me  and  others  to  learn  more  about  Israel  and  all  the  conflict  in  the  Middle  East.  And  I  can’t  forget  about  all  of  the  time  I  have  spent  on  the  beach  here;  it  is  such  a  beautiful  place!

This  upcoming  summer,  I  am  so  glad  to  come  back  to  camp  as  a  senior  counselor!  I  cannot  wait  to  see  all  of  the  returning  campers  and  meet  the  new  ones!  It  will  truly  be  a  fantastic  summer.  Not  to  mention,  Cardio  Funk  will  be  making  a  grand  return,  and  we’re  so  excited  to  bring  it  back.  This  will  be  my  fourth  summer  at  CMC,  and  I’m  convinced  it’ll  be  the  best  one  yet!

Rachel Kavanaugh,    Behavior  Specialist,  NEW  STAFF  MEMBER  2013Hey!  I'm  Rachel  Kavanaugh  and  will  be  the  new  Behavior  Specialist  this  summer!    My  role  at  camp  this  summer  is  to  be  another  resource  for  the  campers  and  help  out  with  any  challenges  or  issues  that  may  arise  while  at  camp.    I  want  everyone  to  have  a  great  experience  at  camp,  and  my  role  is  dedicated  to  making  sure  that  will  happen!

This  will  be  my  first  summer  at  CMC,  but  I  am  so  excited  and  can't  wait  for  camp  to  start!  Currently,  I  am  studying  for  a  doctorate  in  School-‐Clinical  Child  Psychology  at  the  Ferkauf  Graduate  School  of  Psychology  in  New  York  while  also  working  at  Mount  Sinai's  Seaver  Autism  Center.    After  achieving  my  degree,  I  hope  to  work  in  Early  Intervention  Clinics  and,  eventually,  with  children  in  schools.

While  I  have  loved  living  in  New  York,  I  am  a  California  native  and  am  therefore  even  more  excited  to  be  coming  back  to  this  wonderful  state  for  the  summer.    I  have  heard  beyond  wonderful  things  about  CMC  and  know  my  first  summer  will  be  amazing  and  unforgettable!    I'm  already  counting  down  the  days  until  camp  starts!!!

Meet the 2013 CMC Staff...The  backbone  of  any  successful  summer  is  undoubtedly  the  outstanding  young  men  and  women  who  make  up  our  staff,  and  our  2013  CMC  staff  is  shaping  up  to  be  yet  another  incredible  group!  As  we  conPnue  to  complete  our  team,  we  are  thrilled  to  have  the  following  outstanding  individuals  signed  on  for  2013:

Dr. Jamie Friedman, M.D.

Dr.  Jaime  Friedman  has  been  pracbcing  pediatrics  in  San  Diego  for  over  10  years,  first  working  at  Rady’s  Children’s  Hospital  in  the  Urgent  Care  and  then  moving  to  Children’s  Primary  Care  Medical  Group  in  2004.    She  is  now  the  lead  physician  of  the  new  4S  Ranch  office.    Dr.  Friedman  is  Board  Cerbfied  and  a  Fellow  of  the  American  Academy  of  Pediatrics.    She  has  been  one  of  San  Diego  Magazine’s  Top  Docs  for  the  past  8  years  and  was  elected  Best  Doctor  in  East  County  by  The  Californian  in  2011.

Dr.  Friedman  went  to  medical  school  in  Balbmore,  Maryland,  where  she  grew  up,  and  did  her  pediatric  residency  in  Portland,  OR  at  Doernbecher  Children’s  Hospital.      She  grew  up  ahending  Jewish  summer  camp  on  the  east  coast.

Dr.  Friedman  started  working  at  Camp  Mt  Chai  the  first  summer  it  was  open.    She  has  watched  it  grow  and  has  helped  shape  the  Health  Center  into  what  it  is  today.    Her  favorite  part  about  working  at  camp  is  watching  the  campers  grow  up  to  be  counselors.      Dr.  Friedman’s  own  children  are  now  full  bme  campers  and  love  the  camp  atmosphere,  as  well  as  being  immersed  in  the  Jewish  culture.    Their  favorite  bmes  at  camp  are  the  July  4th  carnival  and  Shabbat.

Meredith Nevin, R.N.Hello!  My  name  is  Meredith  Nevin  and  2013  will  be  my  second  summer  as  a  nurse  at  CMC.  My  daughter  Marina  has  been  a  camper  at  CMC  for  three  summers,  and  my  enbre  family  has  ahended  numerous  weekend  retreats  there  over  the  past  five  years.    When  I  am  not  at  camp,  I  am  working  as  an  orthopedic  &  neurological  nurse  at  Sharp  Hospital,  where  I’ve  worked  for  3  years.  I  absolutely  love  my  “day  job”  but  will  of  course  jump  at  every  opportunity  to  escape  to  CMC  for  a  weekend  retreat  or  summer  adventure!

Over  the  past  several  years,  my  daughter  and  I  have  grown  to  feel  like  a  part  of  the  CMC  family.  We  have  made  so  many  wonderful  friends  with  whom  we  stay  in  contact  throughout  the  enbre  year.  Many  of  our  friends  from  CMC  also  are  members  at  Congregabon  Beth  Israel,  where  I  have  been  a  member  since  early  childhood  and  where  my  daughter  will  have  her  Bat  Mitzvah  in  a  few  years.  Among  the  numerous  reasons  we  love  going  to  camp  is  the  embracing    of  Jewish  community  that  reinforces  our  faith  and  encourages  conbnued  explorabon.  Addibonally,  my  daughter  loves  learning  new  games,  mastering  skills  on  the  ropes  course  and  archery  range,  and  kayaking  on  the  beaubful  lake  with  her  friends.  The  staff  is  selecbvely  chosen  by  the  CMC  directors  and  as  a  parent,  I  trust  that  my  daughter  is  in  the  best  of  hands  during  her  stay  there.

We  are  looking  forward  to  another  amazing  summer  experience  with  CMC  and  I  look  forward  to  being  a  part  of  the  medical  team  who  will  care  for  your  children.    Thank  you!

If this is your first time sending any of your children to sleep-

away camp we highly recommend for you to join us for this important and informative meeting. (No  children  please,  this  is  a  parents  only  meeting)

In addition to learning tips and tricks regarding getting you

and your child ready for camp you will also have the

opportunity to speak with our directors one on one.

More information to follow.
