Communications Committee to Keep Members Informed, Build Community Awareness
By Ellis Simon In September Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David established a Communications Committee. Its mission is to help the Temple do a better job of keeping members informed and telling our story to the public so we can raise awareness, build community support and attract new members. Launching the committee was one of Temple President Larry Mack’s priorities. Vice President Martin Skolnick chairs the committee. Past President Ira Salwen, Trustees Samantha Baharvar, Helene Parsons, Jonathan Winderman and Ellis Simon, Chai Lights editor Barbara Kaplan and contributing editor Steve Lander have joined in. “Communications have changed, and we need to take a more sophisticated approach to take advantage of new and established technologies in a consistent, unified manner,” Marty Skolnick said. He added that Temple members interested in serving on the committee should contact him.The committee plans to make better use of our website and social media (Facebook, Twitter); send fewer – but more comprehensive – emails; launch a weekly email listing of events for the coming week. Members who prefer not to use digital technologies will be able to request paper copies. The committee looks forward to working with, and supporting, all arms of CBS-BD, including Sisterhood, Men’s Club and the Jewish Learning Center.

President’s CornerBy Larry Mack, M.D., President
Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David
As the High Holy Day season draws to an end, Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David continues to be a center of tremendous energy. I would like to express my most sincere thanks to all of you who have simply been wonderful in helping the Shul move forward these past few months. I have received so many compliments, words of thanks and approvals, for our efforts during the High Holy Day services. Guests we have never had in our Temple before were so taken with our warmth and feelings of inclusion. And all of you were the reason for our successful services. At Selichot and Tashlich services we also had very good attendance, a strong showing of our commitment to our Shul community. I have said before, it takes people to make a community, and congregants to make a Shul. The increased sharing and participation on all of your parts was just wonderful. Even if I tried, the “yasher koach” list would be way too long to include in this publication. To our religious leadership, Temple officers, Board members, Religious Committee members and congregants: all of you did such a great job. A big “yasher koach” as well to Beth Hammerman and Cece Friedman, and all the committee members who helped make the showing of the documentary, “In our Backyard,” an enormous success. This program was a joint effort by CBS-BD and NCJW. Following the viewing several of the film’s participants were actually present during a very informative panel discussion with the audience. A quick update on some active fronts: we have completed contracting for the replacement of the roof above the lobby area; two small bathrooms are slated for remodeling shortly; two leaks were repaired in the sanctuary area; the sinks and toilets in the ladies bathroom are in the midst of repair by the manufacturer; the large tree on the front lawn of the Temple was taken down, as it was hollowed out and diseased, to prevent its falling onto the building; our trees and shrubs have been pruned; AC/Heat ductwork on the roof has been replaced due to leaks; and we are nearing completion of ShulCloud’s installation as our online Temple manager software at a significant cost savings to the Shul. A healthy New Year to all, and if you need me you can reach me by email at: [email protected] directly; or by leaving a message with the Temple office for a callback. Our Kol Nidre pledge is coming to an end. If you have

Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur this past year were, thank G-d, successful. The crowd was good; the kavanah, I felt, was good, the Chazan was terrific and the lay people who read the Torah were Gevaldig! The feedback that I received was generally positive. I had good/positive reviews of the sermons and generally there was a positive review of almost everything. However, there were some congregants that were upset about some of my comments and indeed were upset concerning some of my levity while on the Bimah. It was brought to my attention (by a third party?) and indeed I apologize and will do the best that I can to curb my levity and comments on the Bimah. I am sorry if I offended anyone and hope that you will accept my sincere apology and my resolve to improve. Thank you very much.
The Choir LoftBy Rachel Guinsburg
Under the superb direction of our Chazan, Daniel Mendelson, and the fine conducting skills of Hillary Beyer, once again the CBS-BD choir made beautiful music during this year’s High Holy Day services. Rehearsals began dur-ing the latter part of the summer, a few weeks prior to the High Holy Days. Some members of the choir have participated for many years. Others, like myself, are newer and were warmly welcomed by all. I thoroughly enjoy participating and look forward each year to the holidays. Also, we are hoping to work toward some Shabbat and additional holiday “gigs.” Do you like to sing? New members are welcome (no experience necessary.) Send me an email if you are inter-ested ([email protected] ). I will be happy to answer any questions.
The Choir in the sanctuary just before Kol Nidre. L to R: Michelle Morrison, Claire Gordon, Hillary Beyer, Bernie Genzer, Cantor Daniel Mendelson, Rabbi Howard Diamond, Rachel Guinsburg, Al Weiser and Dr. Al Morrison.

Deeply GratefulI am deeply grateful to all my friends and fellow congregants at B’nai Sholom-
Beth David for their many warm expressions of sympathy, whether at my mother’s funeral, shiva calls or in condolence cards following her passing on September 18th. I especially want to thank those of you who made donations in her memory. Thank you all for comforting me during these past few weeks
and helping to make this difficult period somewhat more bearable. Yours truly, Jay Abrahams

From Jacob to Moses to David: How Our Struggle is Our IdentityBy Brandon Melendez, JLC School Board Member and Congregant
As Jews, we have grappled with our faith from antiquity to modernity. The Golden Calf at the foot of Mount Sinai; the infusion of Hellenism that brought rise to the Maccabee movement; the Jews who tragically considered themselves “Germans first” are all examples of the secular world and the Jewish world coming into conflict. This struggle with our faith is at the heart of our experience as Jews. It is the root of our cultural heritage and the place from which we derive our identity as a people. In Genesis, upon returning to his father’s lands, Jacob is obstructed by an unnamed angel. Tradition and scripture informs us that Jacob had obtained his blessings in life by both taking advantage of his brother and deceiving his blind father. The angel confronting him was, in many ways, Jacob having to reconcile a checkered past in order to have a clean slate. Jacob needed to make peace with his poor choice to return to Canaan and had to overcome the angel to proceed - and the fight was long and arduous. One can imagine that it was physically trying, without a doubt, but the spiritual strength and certainty it must take to stand toe to toe and overcome an angel is beyond comprehension. Jacob left this battle triumphant but it had taken a toll. The angel wounded Jacob, and for the rest of his days he walked with a limp, but he had been fundamentally fortified. G-d renamed Jacob, and Jacob renamed the place following the transformation. Henceforth, Jacob was known as Israel, for he had wrestled with G-d and the place was known as Penuel, for Israel had seen the face of G-d and lived. Furthermore, his descendants, both biological and spiritual, would also be Israel, and would have to face G-d in their own ways, in their own places. The legalistic traditions of
our faith are well rooted in wrestling with the scriptures and divine law. As we wrestle with G-d, we struggle to conform, suppress, and obey. Each of us personally wins some matches, and loses others. Though it seems cliché, to err is human and to forgive divine, and annually we are reminded of this at Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This tradition of struggling with piety doesn’t end with Jacob. Though we take our name from him, we most closely identify with Moses and David. Moses who gave us the law and David who wrote the poems of prayer; Moses who taught and David who conquered and ruled; Moses who spoke, though lame, and David who triumphed, though small—these men, too, were flawed and they struggled. Moses famously was not permitted entry to the promised land for his disobedience. David sent a man to his death to take Bathsheba, the man’s widow, for his own. They struggled with G-d and transgressed. We should heed as much of the lessons of their failures as we do of their triumphs. Our great men were but men, and we have as much to learn from their great deeds as we do from their human flaws. If we leap forward to today, to our world, our country, our town, and our congregation, we should feel deeply connected to our forebears and our namesake in our struggles—though this connection does not lighten our load. However, it does put our lives into an historical, biblical context. When we, as modern-day Jews, question the feasibility of keeping Shabbos, or attending a minyan, and make decisions about what fits into our lives, we, too, are struggling with G-d. This should not be taken as a sign of weakness or the erosion of the bedrock of our faith but rather as a confirmation of it. We are the spiritual successors of our namesake, the
grandson of Abraham who became known to the world as Israel. We are Israel, and therefore we struggle with G-d so that we can persevere with G-d. When our communities find it difficult to get young families into seats in our sanctuaries we should consider that this battle is eternal and quintessentially Jewish. In wrestling, holds can be broken. To win the match contestants must grapple, change positions, and find the next hold to gain control of the match. As a people, it is our responsibility to find what those who are removed from our communities are struggling with so we can change positions and grapple together to support each other. The old holds don’t always work. It is frustrating and vexing, but it is nonetheless what we were chosen for. The battle may be taxing, we may find ourselves walking with a limp, but we will have also seen the face of G-d and lived…not in spite of it, but because of it. Being chosen, after all, does not mean we have it easy. We were chosen to wrestle with G-d, not stroll into the Promised Land unopposed.

Sisterhood NewsBy Maxine Geller, Sisterhood President
SISTERHOOD is a vital part of Jewish life. Besides fundraising, we provide programs designed to inspire and organize Jewish women. This past year we have held activities that raised funds to pay for the publication of Chai Lights, to purchase jelly apples for children on Simchas Torah and to provide the Helen Kroner program for our Jewish Learning Center. In addition, we delivered Mitzvah Meals for sick and/or bereaved Congregants. We have joined with other women outside our Temple community to raise awareness of social injustice such as sex trafficking and battered women. Our affiliation with Women’s League for Conservative Judaism provides educational programs which inspire and enrich our lives. Please participate when you are able. We know today’s women wear many hats and have limited time for themselves. I am always available by phone or email. Sisterhood Book ClubBy Muriel Smith
At our last meeting the Sisterhood Book Club discussed The Chilbury Ladies Choir by Jennifer Ryan. This historical fiction novel describes a group of women who reside in a small English village and form a ladies choir to help lift their spirits during the early years of World War II. The year is 1940 and the reader is presented with a vivid portrayal of the role of women during this period of our history. The next meeting of the book club will be Thursday, November 9th at 2:00 pm. The book to be discussed is The Rent Collector by Camron Wright. The locale for this book is Cambodia and the story is that of a family hoping for a brighter future. NOTE: Sisterhood Book Club meetings will now take place on the second Thursday of each month, not on Wednesdays.

“In Our Backyard” Documentary Well ReceivedBy CeCe Friedman
On Sunday morning September 24, more than 100 congregation members and members of the National Council of Jewish Women — Long Island Sections, Peninsula Section and South Shore Section — attended a free screening of the documentary by filmmaker Danielle Rose entitled “In Our Backyard.” The film documents sex trafficking in Brooklyn, New York through the stories of three young women, while also presenting the work of determined aid organizations, law enforcement agencies and politicians. It is estimated that 100,000 children are in the sex industry right now in the United States. New York City is a major hub, with Brooklyn a prime location for sex trafficking. After the movie Ms. Rose, Ashley, one of the survivors depicted in the film, and representatives of LIAT (Long Island Against Trafficking), The Safe Center LI, and ECPAT USA, participated in a question-and-answer session. Although the film was sometimes difficult to watch, it also showed the resiliency of the young women in the film. These young women escaped this horror but there are many others who have not escaped or who will be entrapped. The more we present these programs, hopefully more will be educated to protect themselves. The film aims to raise awareness of this unspoken world of sex trafficking in Brooklyn and to fight this serious epidemic. If you know of other venues to show this film, please advise Beth Hammerman, CeCe Friedman, or the filmmaker at [email protected].
Larry Mack, President of Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David, asks how do we get Hollywood celebrities to address this issue.
Question and Answer session after the film
The film was well attended by congregants and members of NCJW from our local area.
The panel – spokespeople from The Safe Center, LIAT, ECPAT, Danielle Rose, filmmaker, and “Ashley”, a survivor who told her story in the film.

Rabbi Emeritus Schwartz’s Colorful Past In the spring of 2017 several articles appeared in online Jewish magazines detailing Rabbi Barry Dov Schwartz’s years before he became B’nai Sholom’s rabbi in the early seventies. One, entitled “The Rabbi Who Tracked Down Nazis,” appeared in Moment, an independent Jewish intellectual and cultural magazine founded in 1975 by Elie Wiesel and Leonard Fein. It details Rabbi Schwartz’s exploits as a young rabbinical student in the early 60’s and how he met, worked with and established a long-standing friendship with Simon Wiesenthal, the Nazi hunter. The second article, “An Air Force Chaplain’s Unforgettable Passover, 50 Years Ago,” published in Tablet, a daily online magazine of Jewish news, ideas and culture, tells the story of Schwartz as an Air Force Chaplain and his Passover postings in Goose Bay in Northern Canada, Spain and Israel. Both articles, totaling several thousand words, detail Schwartz’s exploits and experiences and make for fascinating reading. JLC Students Enjoy First Annual Sukkot FestivalBy Dan Seid, Principal, The Jewish Learning Center
This past High Holy Day season was a busy time as the JLC had over 12 Junior Congregation programs happening. Attendance at High Holy Day services was higher than average this year and the staff of the JLC did a fabulous job of attracting students to our rich and meaningful prayer services. This year the JLC had its first ever “Erev Sukkot Festival,” which highlighted the beauty and ritual traditions of the Festival for our students. On Wednesday, October 4 students met in the Sukkah for pizza in the hut, edible sukkot-making and a special arts and crafts etrog project. Mrs. Cener, Morah Shlomit, Ms. Marissa and specialty Art Teacher Ms. Nina presided over the Festival and did a great job of bringing joy to the JLC Students during Sukkot. Students then joined the Rabbi for a special lesson on the blessings over the lulav and etrog and a group discussion of the importance of Sukkot. Students, families and synagogue members enjoyed the event.

The First Ever FORWARD Jewish College GuideBy Barry Goldberg, College Commission
The on-line Jewish news and culture site, The Forward, has published its first-ever college guide. The editors spent months collecting data and crunching numbers, surveying campus professionals and speaking to students, parents and alumni, to create a comprehensive picture of what Jews take into consideration when they look for a college. At a time when campus life is either pilloried or parodied, this guide drew from 10,000 points of data to paint a real picture of Jewish life at 171 colleges and universities across the country. They created a formula to rank the schools, one that took into account nearly 50 variables because they understand that students have different Jewish concerns and priorities. Some want a vibrant Hillel and a kosher dining hall. Others look for a campus brimming with social activism. Or a great Frisbee team. Or all of the above. It’s all in the survey — along with solid information about academics, cost and other factors. There are fun facts from each campus, some surprising rankings, and dozens of firsthand accounts by Jewish professionals and students. The guide is a work in progress, and is intended to be updated every year — with your help. Send along your comments and suggestions to [email protected].
