BSBI’S CHAI LIGHTS

Rabbi’s Corner

“God Won’t Fix This”

As we go into the month of March, our

Torah readings concern the building of the

Mishkan, the portable sanctuary used by

the Israelites during their years of

wandering in the wilderness and then set

up in Israel after we entered the land.

Why does the Torah give so much space

to this subject? It covers four parshiyot, four weeks of Torah

reading. When the world was created, the Torah devoted

just a portion of the first parasha, total of thirty-four

verses. The construction of the Mishkan is fifteen times that.

A lot of space is devoted to the subject because there is an

important lesson here for us to learn. Until the Exodus, our people were always dependent on

outside support. Now, in the wilderness, they were still

largely dependent upon God: the manna that fed them and

the pillar of cloud by day or of fire by night that directed

their journey. In order to develop, to become an independent

people, they needed a project. At the beginning of parashat

Trumah, Exodus 25, God tells Moses to instruct the people

to “take” contributions for the project to be described, but

then says, “from every person whose heart moves him to do

so.” There seems to be some ambivalence here about

whether contributions have to be totally heartfelt. Then it

goes on to list items needed. I am always amazed at the

inclusion of dolphin skins on the list. Where would they get

those? Notes in commentary say it really means sheep or

goat leather. I think the important point here is that the

Torah is beginning to set the stage for its underlying

message: the people have to have some “skin in the game.” In verse 8 we find the most often quoted line: “And let them

make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.”

Commentaries all note that it does not say “that I may dwell

in it,” but rather, “among them.” Here is the point: by

involving themselves in the project of building the Mishkan

the Israelites will feel God’s presence. I like the way Rabbi

Jonathan Sacks puts it:

“God does not live in buildings. He lives in builders.

He lives not in structures of stone but in the human

heart.”

Words from the President

Dear Congregants, We have compiled the feedback from Rabbi

Shalom Kantor’s visit. We had nearly 100

responses. He received excellent ratings from

the congregation. I am proud of the warmth

and energy of our congregation. We had

outstanding attendance, enthusiasm, and

interaction. Rabbi Kantor, as is the case with

most desirable candidates, will visit with three other

synagogues. We will continue to stay in touch with him. Recently, two search committee members and I traveled to the

Jewish Theological Seminary in NYC to participate in

Interview Week. We met with four of the upcoming JTS and

Ziegler graduates, Class of 2016. We were very impressed with

our interviews and have invited two of these Rabbi’s to visit

with us.

SAVE THE DATES: UPCOMING RABBI CANDIDATE

VISITS On behalf of the search committee, I am excited to introduce

these two wonderful candidates. On the weekend of March 11,

12 and 13th

, Rabbi Raysh Weiss will visit with us, joined by her

husband and daughter. On March 18th and 19

th, Rabbi Zachary

Sitkin will be with us. Each Rabbi is looking forward to getting

to know our BSBI Community. Just as we did before, you will be asked to RSVP via e-mail to

the services/events you are able to attend. It was very helpful

to the planning committee to have your attendance in advance. Following each rabbi candidate visit, you will be asked to

provide your feedback as you did with our first candidate,

Rabbi Shalom Kantor. Thanks to everyone for your participation in the process. It is

an extremely busy and exciting time for visiting Rabbis as well

as searching congregations!

Rabbi Candidate Visits

March 11-13, 2016: Rabbi Raysh Weiss

March 18-19, 2016: Rabbi Zachary Sitkin

Please watch your e-mail for a full schedule of events

along with the RSVP link. Your timely response is

greatly appreciated.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend as many

events as you can. We want to show the candidates

what a great place BSBI truly is and give everyone a

chance to meet them.

Prepare for Pesach

Pesach may not start until April 22nd

this

year, but it’s not too soon to start thinking

about necessary preparations. Take a look

at the Pesach Guide provided by the

Rabbinical Assembly at this link:

guide

Buy Your Scrip @ BSBI!

The Supermarket Gift card program is sponsored by Sisterhood, Hadassah, and the

Synagogue, and the profits from the sale of gift cards are returned to the three

organizations. The program has a dedicated corps of volunteers who print the labels for the envelopes, pack the envelopes with the monthly gift card orders, and deliver the

filled envelopes. We have gift cards for the following stores:

Stop & Shop, ShopRite, Big Y, Highland Park Market, Crown Market, CVS

Not a participant yet? It's simple - Just come in and purchase the cards with a check (preferred), or with a

MasterCard, Visa, or Discover Card. This is one way you can really help the organizations you love and that

are so meaningful to you! And just think, you get to visit your temple, see friends, or stop in and visit with

the Rabbi or office staff. If you would like to commit to a monthly distribution call Brenda Lerner at 860-643-9700 or Saundra

Roethel at 860-643-9563, ext. 100. If you are not ready to commit to a monthly order, please stop into the

synagogue office. Saundra would be more than happy to assist you in the purchase of gift cards. If it is not

convenient for you to pick up your gift card order, one of our volunteers will be happy to deliver them to

you.

Meals on Wheels –

Volunteers Needed! The Meals on Wheels

Program of Visiting

Nurse and Health

Services of CT is in

need of volunteers to deliver meals within

our local communities

on Mondays,

Wednesdays, and

Fridays.

BSBI Chesed: Kindness and Caring

The Social Action Committee is pleased to announce an expanded effort, BSBI Chesed: Kindness and Caring.

Members of our congregation who are experiencing illness, loss, or are alone have already been receiving

cards from their synagogue family through Marilyn Lassow. Now, if they wish, they can also receive calls

from Elaine Kahaner and/or visits from Debbie Cinquemani. Marilyn Lassow, a BSBI member for many years, is a retired teacher, who is involved with many aspects of our Jewish

community and spends countless hours helping others. Elaine Kahaner, a BSBI member since 1971, is a retired psychotherapist

who worked at Manchester Memorial Hospital for many years, and now facilitates group support and discussions for family

caregivers. Debbie Cinquemani, also a long time member, is an Interventional Radiology RN in the Medical Imaging Department

at Manchester Memorial Hospital. Her expertise and bedside manner gives encouragement and confidence to people in need of

reassurance. BSBI Chesed: Kindness and Caring is asking you to let us know who might benefit from a card, a call, or a visit. Help us extend

the friendliness and warmth the congregation wishes to provide to all its members. We can be reached by phone or email:

Cards: Marilyn Lassow, 860-646-2291, [email protected]

Phone calls: Elaine Kahaner, 860-983-3929, [email protected]

Visits: Debbie Cinquemani, 860-645-6146, [email protected]

And this is only the beginning! BSBI Chesed: Kindness and Caring is developing a plan to involve more members of the

congregation in this important work. Stay tuned…

Something New is Coming We are very excited to be kicking off our

new Pesach Greeting Project this

month. As we indicated last month, this

is a new variation on Shalach

Manot. However, rather than sending boxes at Purim we will be mailing

greetings for a Sweet and Joyous

Passover to those families whom you

designate. We are making it very simple

for you to participate by giving you the

option, should you choose, of completing

the process online . You will shortly be

receiving an email that will bring you into

the site and give you all the information

you need to send warm wishes to any or

all congregants, school families and/or

religious school and synagogue staff. In addition you will receive a snail mail

letter giving you the option of

participating via paper, pen and of course,

checkbook. Stay tuned for this exciting

opportunity to enhance our celebration of

Passover. Knit & Kvetch

Tuesday, March 8th We are now in our eleventh year of

charity giving. Our next meeting is

Tuesday, March 8 at 1:30 pm. If you would like to join Knit & Kvetch, please

contact me. Remember, if you can’t come

to the meetings you can always knit at

home. Call me for suggestions of the

items that are needed. Also, as always, we can always use yarn

(100 % ACRYLIC only -no wool please)

or monetary donation to help continue

our mitzvah. Your checks can be made

Do you like to laugh? Sir Jeremy Bell returns to BSBI for what promises to be another

hilarious program on March 12th

Through comedy and drink, Bell

will demonstrate how badly our founding fathers behaved. It’s time

for real history — no more redcoats

and muskets! This will be a night filled with riotous songs, snuff, and

swordplay! See the naughty side of

Ben Franklin, who told us why

“Beer is proof that God wants us to be happy.” A reception begins at 7:30 p.m. and

Bell’s program begins at 8:30 p.m.. Tickets purchased before March 8

Admission includes the reception, multiple beverage tastings, and a

very fun show!

they can remain independent. Do you play golf? Do you know anyone who plays golf? (If no, do

you eat dinner?) If you’ve

join us. The cost is on par (pun intended) with other golf

tournaments, and it includes golf, a

dinner. (All Kosher, of course.) Don’t play golf? Join us for a great

dinner. The event is not only fun, but we have fantastic raffle and

auction items available. We need

everyone’s support to make this a

success!

“Seeing the world on the bicycle” Sunday, March 6

breakfast featuring BSBI’s very own Matt Friedman. Matt will

discuss the wonderful opportunities

available when touring the world by bicycle. He will address some of

common questions surrounding the

process of arranging the tour of your dreams. Slides and videos will

adventures including their 700-mile

trek (with 50,000+ feet of total elevation change) from the Golan

Heights to Eilat!

How can you help? From buying computers and water

heaters to supporting special

earlier, were the initiators of the

project we call Beth Sholom B’nai

Israel. But the present members can and must also be involved. In fact,

we are no different than any other

organization. A small percentage of the membership gets involved and

the vast majority of the members

have the advantage of the work done by the small minority. But in fact, the advantage that the

majority gets is limited by the fact

that they are not involved. The act of involvement – beyond writing a

check, which is certainly appreciated

and necessary – is that the effort expended is itself a benefit. In the

words of Pirke Avot “L’fum tza’arah

agrah,” the reward is proportionate to the effort. Let’s go back to the

name of the parasha: Trumah. The

root means to elevate. The act of

giving and getting involved causes us to elevate our lives. The name of

project described in the parasha is

Mishkan, and the root refers to closeness. By involving ourselves in

the holy work of maintaining our

synagogue, we may feel closer to

our community and closer to our God. Give it a try. You will be glad

you did.

It is important to note that it is

insufficient for the Israelites to make

their material contribution. They

actually have to be involved in the

project. The relevance of this idea is

obvious as we look at synagogue life.

The synagogue today is the heir of the

Mishkan. For 369 years the Mishkan

was the religious center of Jewish life.

Then it was the 1st and later the 2

nd

Temple. Now it is the local

synagogue. But in all these structures

the same principle applied: you had to

be personally involved to get anything

out of it. Your giving to support it is expected

and appreciated. That is why the

verb used is “Va’yikchu” and they took. That verse also says, ‘of those

whose heart so moves them.’ So we

want more than just your check; we also want your heart. But there is

more. We need your involvement.

More importantly, you need your

involvement. You cannot just leave it to someone else – or more

accurately, if you do just leave it to

someone else, you lose out an important benefit. The Israelites we

read about in the wilderness were in

on the ground floor of this project. The Jewish community of

Sandals Lecture and Day of Learning

Is The Rabbinate All Fun & Games? Annual George and Lillian Sandals Memorial Dinner and Lecture

Tuesday, April 12th

On Tuesday, April 12th, at 6:15 pm, we will be holding our Annual George and Lillian Sandals

Memorial Dinner and Lecture sponsored by Sisterhood, Hadassah and Beth Sholom B’nai Israel. (Please note that Minyan will be at 6:00 pm.) Our guests will be Rabbi Jeffrey and

Mindy Glickman. Rabbi Glickman has served Temple Beth Hillel in South Windsor, Connecticut, for two decades. He has a Master’s Degree, Rabbinic Ordination and Doctorate from Hebrew Union

College. He also received an MBA from UCONN. He is a certified public school teacher, has

taught at several universities and serves as chaplain to the Fire and Police departments. Mindy

Glickman operates a family business, writes on Jewish topics and her passion is bringing people to Israel.

Together they have a love of games. Their first game, AttrAction, brought so much joy to those who played it, they felt it

needed to have a broader audience. They developed it, and licensed it to R and R Games. This got them started down a path. In just four years, they now have nine companies manufacturing their many games, including: Melissa and Doug,

Fat Brain, Back Alley Traders, Foam Brain, Identity Games and the Israeli company, Gaya, The Art of Thinking. They believe that games model the values that a people hold dear. Regardless of how glitzy a game is, it will be replayed only if the values resonate with the players. They see the world through values — implicit and explicit. The games they

design are all values based, even though they appeal to different markets. They have been described as “flowers which

continue to blossom.” Their website is http://turntothewonderful.com. They will bring some of their games with them to give away. RSVP to Marilyn Lassow, 102 Hollister Street, Manchester, CT 06042 by returning the enclosed form along with your

check. Specify your choice for dinner; chicken, fish or vegetarian. The cost is Adults, $20.00; Youths under 18, $15.00;

Dessert and Lecture only $5. Send in your check, made out to BSBI Sisterhood no later than March 31, 2016.

BSBI Community

Let's Celebrate Together on April 23rd

לה? לי כל תו ז ל לת תתו לו שת תו תו ת שנ לו

Why is this night different from all other nights?

It is so chic to enjoy a traditional Seder in a different setting. Some folks go to Israel,

take a cruise, or book a hotel. Your choice: Kibbutz, Katskills or Karibbean? You can

choose our Kommunity for giving thanks and retelling the story of our liberation.

Join us at the BSBI community Seder on April 23, when ritual is sprinkled with the

spice of heymish. And you don't have to do the work.

Support BSBI’s Library!

There are many ways to support BSBI’s amazing library. Donate funds to the

library to help us purchase new books to expand our collection, keeping it

new and up to date. Volunteer a few hours of your time to help with upkeep and day to day operations. Another great way to support the library is to come in and use it! Members

can check out books for 4 weeks – no library card required! Simply stop in when BSBI is open (excluding Shabbat), fill out the card in the back of the

book and leave it in the box. This allows us to keep track of our materials,

and aids in loss prevention. Not sure what you’re looking for? We have a large assortment of

biographies, fiction, and non-fiction work, including an extensive Holocaust

collection. The library also has a range of children’s books, located in the

Silverstein Center. Stop in and search our catalog in the library. We also have a file on our website that can be searched by author or title (press the

“ctrl” and “f” keys on your keyboard and type into the field that pops up near

the top or bottom of the screen). Surely there is something here for everyone!

Featured Book:

Einstein: His Life and Universe by Walter Isaacson

Celebrate Einstein’s birthday on March 14th or the recent discovery of proof that his concept of gravitational waves exist by picking up this book about his life from the BSBI Library.

The library has several books on Einstein (as well as other significant Jewish figures) in both the adult and children’s libraries.

Support BSBI While Shopping Online

Do you make purchases on Amazon.com? If so, make sure to follow these easy steps to log in using AmazonSmile!

1. Go to this webpage to set BSBI as your charity of choice: http://amzn.to/1HPEx61. This link should already have BSBI selected.

You can also get to this page by going to the BSBI website, www.myshul.org and clicking on the link on the homepage under

“shopping”.

2. Sign in with your Amazon account. If you do not have one, the page should prompt you to create one. There is no cost to create a

basic Amazon account.

3. When you shop, make sure that you go to https://smile.amazon.com/ rather than the regular Amazon site. If you do not do this

step, your purchases won’t be counted towards the percentage that BSBI receives.

4. Not all items are eligible for this program, especially those sold by other sellers. When looking at the item you’d like to purchase, look for a note like the one below. If that note is there and you have logged in to the link above, 0.5% of your purchase will be

donated to BSBI by Amazon – there is no additional cost to you! Every little bit counts! Thanks to everyone who has already participated.

Jewish War Veterans: Sergeant John L. Levitow Post 45

The commander of the Jewish War Veterans’ Post 45, Jerry Baggish, is reaching out to BSBI members and friends who are Jewish war

veterans to join the organization. Jewish veterans of all ages are needed to keep the JWV a special place. If you are interested in

becoming involved, contact Jerry at 860-684-5367 or [email protected].

“Rum and the Founding Fathers” Presented by Sir Jeremy Bell Sir Jeremy Bell returns to BSBI for what promises to be

another hilarious program. Through comedy and drink, Bell

will demonstrate how badly our founding fathers behaved.

It’s time for real history — no more redcoats and muskets!

This will be a night filled with riotous songs, snuff, and

swordplay! See the naughty side of Ben Franklin who told us

why “Beer is proof that God wants us to be happy.”

7:30 PM: Wine and Cheese Reception 8:30 PM: Sir Jeremy Bell

Tickets purchased before March 8th

are $45, after that date they will cost $55. Admission includes

the reception, multiple beverage tastings, and a very fun show.

Purchase tickets by returning the enclosed form to Ken Wichman or paying by credit card online at

http://www.myshul.org/events/rum/.

Tickets will be held at the door. Non-Alcoholic beverages will also be available.
