BSBI’S CHAI LIGHTS

Rabbi’s Corner

The Pesach Seder has some very strange

practices. We say that we are inviting all who are hungry

to come and join us, but if we do have an empty

seat at our table, it’s the one for Elijah the

prophet. Besides, who offers a party invitation

after the party is already underway? Our Seder, and in particular the Maror, is supposed to remind us

that we suffered as slaves. In our house anyway, there is nothing

about suffering in the way Lisa does the Seder, except the work to

prepare it. It is the most lavish meal of the year. Our tradition has always stressed the importance of deeds over

words or beliefs. And yet, at the Seder, we surely don’t just do,

we explain, and explain some more, and then tell lots of stories.

Why not just do the rituals and get to the meal? Not a few people

have suggested this. (You know the line about “They tried to kill

us; we survived; let’s eat.) About half an hour into the Seder, we read the passage authored

by Rabban Gamliel. “R. Gamliel would say: Those who have not

explained three things during the Seder have not fulfilled their

obligation. These three things are: the Pesach offering, Matzah

and Maror.” Now you tell me? We need to explain just three things and we

will have fulfilled our obligation? Of course not. We know the Seder has 15 steps and even the

“family-friendly 30-minute Seder” takes half an hour. So what is

Rabban Gamliel saying? It is apparent to me that we are being

told that these three symbols are especially important and you

dare not make short shift of them. What’s so important? The Pesach was the sacrificial offering done in the days when the

Temple stood in Jerusalem and the sacrificial cult was the

primary vehicle of Jewish worship. So if we have not been doing

it for nearly two millennia, why is it so important? Because we

don’t forget. Memory, in its various manifestations, has been the

keystone of Judaism forever. Our ancestors gave of their most

precious possessions to bring sacrifices as a means of worship;

Words from the President

Dear Congregants, This has been an active two-year term,

and the time has come to remind you

to Save The Date: Tuesday May 17th,

for our Annual Meeting. We will bring

back the deli dinner, and details are

right around the corner. On behalf of the Board of Directors, our condolences go

out to all our congregants in recent mourning. May your

loved ones always be a source of peace in your heart. My thanks to all the congregants who carved out time to

be with us on the two Shabbatot we hosted potential

Rabbi candidates. A very special thank you to all those

who helped to make both weekends run smoothly. Your

efforts were noticeable and appreciated. You can expect

a formal announcement upon securing a new Rabbi. The Board committees have been actively working on

the following: member recruitment and a new members

directory, refining religious school forms and policies,

safety and security measures, and continued building

beautification, the upcoming retirement party, upgrading

our financial software, revamping the High Holiday

B'dikat Chametz, The Search for Leaven

Thursday night, April 21st at your home

After the house has been thoroughly cleaned and prepared for

Pesach, we search again for any crumbs that may have been missed.

This search is actually an educational ritual. Several pieces of

chametz are "planted" around the house and then "found." This is

done in a very ritualistic manner utilizing a feather, a wooden spoon

and a candle. The prayers to precede and follow the search may be

found in your Haggadah or on page 4 of the bulletin. Be sure to

include your children or grandchildren in this fun ritual.

Why fast when you don't have to?

Attend the Siyum B'chorim service on

Friday, April 22nd

. The service begins at

7:30 AM and will conclude at 8:15 AM.

A light breakfast is being provided by

Susan and Maury Luxemburg following

the service.

Sale of Chametz

On Passover we are forbidden to have chametz (leaven foodstuffs) in our possession. Therefore, we plan our shopping so as to have no

chametz left by Pesach. If some does remain, we burn it on the morning before Pesach. Today however, with canned goods, liquors,

and well-sealed packages, it has become impractical to discard all unused chametz. Plan to bring your unopened chametz to the

synagogue by Sunday, April 17 at 11 am, so that we can take it to the Food Pantry for the needy. Alternatively, you may put it in a

closed place you do not intend to use during the holiday. This chametz is then covered or locked. We then make arrangements for it to

‘leave’ our possession. To do this, you may designate the Rabbi to act as your agent to sell the remaining chametz to a non-Jew who

makes a small down-payment and purchases it before Pesach. After the last day of Pesach, the Rabbi asks her for the balance. If she

does not wish to pay the full amount she sells it back to us through the Rabbi. If you wish to observe this tradition, you may designate

Rabbi Plavin as your agent for Mechirat Chametz by giving him the form below by 7:30 AM, Friday, April 22nd

. Any donations

made in conjunction with this tradition will go to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund for distribution to worthy causes for Pesach. This

donation is optional.

Something New

We are very excited to be kicking off

our new Pesach Greeting Project this

month. As we indicated last month, this

is a new variation on Shalach

Manot. However, rather than sending

boxes at Purim we will be mailing

greetings for a Sweet and Joyous

Passover to those families whom you

designate.

Don’t forget to send in your Pesach

Project greetings either in the paper

version or online. You will have

received a packet in the mail as well as

an email giving all the information you

need to participate. This is a wonderful

way to combine support for BSBI and

Sisterhood with a lovely new custom of

sending good wishes to your friends and

neighbors for Passover.

Knit & Kvetch

Tuesday, April 12th

We are now in our eleventh year of

charity giving. Our next meeting is

Tuesday, April 12th at 1:30 pm. If you

would like to join Knit & Kvetch, please

contact me. Remember, if you can’t

come to the meetings you can always

knit at home. Call me for suggestions of

the items that are needed.

Also, as always, we can always use yarn

(100% ACRYLIC only -no wool please)

to help continue our mitzvah, or

monetary donations. Your checks can

be made out to BSBI Sisterhood/Knit

and Kvetch and mailed to the BSBI

office marked Attn: Sisterhood so that

they are properly distributed.

comparison to our ancestors, and too

many others today, we have little to

complain about. Yet, lest we get too complacent, we go

on to the next paragraph in the

Haggadah. It begins “In each

generation….” and in Hebrew, “Bchol

dor vador…” That little phrase rings a

bell. It brings us back to a passage we

chanted earlier. “Bchol dor vador

omdim aleynu…” “In every generation

they have risen against us to destroy

us….” Sadly that is an eternal verity,

and ‘eternal’ means even today. Anti-

Semitism is surely on the rise in Europe,

and to an extent here in the USA. In the

world at large, Israel is now the Jew

among the nations, and the BDS

movement is a politically correct

(according to some misguided people)

way to exercise modern day Anti-

Semitism in a big way. This should be a

topic of discussion at every Seder table. May your Passover observance be

sweet, and may your Seder (or Sidarim)

be joyous, meaningful and bring

blessing to all around your table. Chag Kasher v’Sameach. A zissen

Pesach.

Furthermore, in offering a lamb, they

were taking their lives in their hands.

The lamb was a god in Egypt. To

sacrifice a lamb would be absolutely

contrary to the Egyptian culture and

norms, and so that is exactly what we

do. We are reminded that swimming

against the tide is what Jews do. We do

not just follow the crowd and pick up

whatever abominable fad or value

happens to come along. We have eternal

values that must guide our lives as Jews. The Matzah is the major symbol of the

holiday. Here we are told it reminds us

of our ancestors’ haste in leaving

slavery. Earlier in the Seder we said it

reminded us that there are many in our

world afflicted by hunger; it is the bread

of poverty, and as Jews we must come

to their aide. Both explanations are true

and important. We see that the bread of

affliction becomes the bread of

redemption. We must learn the lesson

that our suffering must lead us to help

others in need of redemption, make us

more sensitive to their needs. Third and last is the Maror. Gratitude

should take precedence over

complaining, and that’s why this comes

last, but complaining is just human. We

can’t help it. But the key point is that by

Is The Rabbinate All Fun & Games? Annual George and Lillian Sandals Memorial Dinner

and Lecture, Tuesday, April 12th

On Tuesday, April 12th

, at 6:15 pm, we

will be holding our annual George and

Lillian Sandals Memorial Dinner and

Lecture sponsored by Sisterhood,

Hadassah and Beth Sholom B’nai Israel.

(Please note that Minyan will be at 6:00

pm.) Our guests will be Rabbi Jeffrey

and Mindy Glickman.

Rabbi Glickman has served Temple Beth Hillel in South

Windsor, Connecticut, for two decades. He has a Master’s

Degree, Rabbinic Ordination and Doctorate from Hebrew

Union College. He also received an MBA from UCONN. He

is a certified public school teacher, has taught at several

universities and serves as chaplain to the Fire and Police

departments. Mindy Glickman operates a family business,

writes on Jewish topics and her passion is bringing people to

Israel. Together they have a love of games. Their first game,

AttrAction, brought so much joy to those who played it, they

felt it needed to have a broader audience. They developed it,

and licensed it to R and R Games. This got them started

down a path. In just four years, they now have nine

companies manufacturing their many games, including:

Melissa and Doug, Fat Brain, Back Alley Traders, Foam

Brain, Identity Games and the Israeli company, Gaya, The

Art of Thinking. They believe that games model the values

that a people hold dear. Regardless of how glitzy a game is,

it will be replayed only if the values resonate with the

players. They see the world through values — implicit and

explicit. The games they design are all values based, even

though they appeal to different markets. They have been

described as “flowers which continue to blossom.” Their

website is http://turntothewonderful.com. They will bring

some of their games with them to give away. RSVP to Marilyn Lassow, 102 Hollister Street, Manchester,

CT 06042 by returning the form (available at this link:

http://bit.ly/1WODzcU) along with your check. Specify your

choice for dinner; chicken, fish or vegetarian. The cost is

Adults, $20.00; Youths under 18, $15.00; Dessert and

Lecture only $5. Send in your check, made out to BSBI

Sisterhood no later than March 31, 2016. If you have

missed the deadline, check with Marilyn to see if you can

come for dessert and lecture: [email protected].

Please Note: Anyone planning an event at BSBI must fill out a Facility

Reservation form and return it to the office. Events will not

be added to the calendar without this form. Copies will be

available in the office and online at

http://www.myshul.org/resources/forms/. Thank you for

your cooperation.

BSBI Social Action Toiletry Drive

It’s time to start collecting toiletries for area shelters. A box has been set up in the coat room. Items needed include: shampoo, conditioner, combs/brushes, soap, face/body cream, toothbrushes and paste, deodorant, and razors.

Pesach is just around the corner!

Buy Your Scrip @ BSBI! Before you shop, stop by BSBI and pick up your

gift cards. The Supermarket Gift card program is

sponsored by Sisterhood, Hadassah, and the

Synagogue, and the profits from the sale of gift

cards are returned to the three organizations. The

program has a dedicated corps of volunteers who

print the labels for the envelopes, pack the

envelopes with the monthly gift card orders, and

deliver the filled envelopes. We have gift cards

for the following stores: Stop & Shop, ShopRite, Big Y, Highland Park

Market, Crown Market, CVS

Not a participant yet? It's

simple - Just come in and

purchase the cards with a

check (preferred), or with a

MasterCard, Visa, or

Discover Card. This is one

way you can really help the

organizations you love and that are so

meaningful to you! And just think, you get to

visit your temple, see friends, or stop in and visit

with the Rabbi or office staff. If you would like to commit to a monthly

distribution call Brenda Lerner at 860-643-9700

or Saundra Roethel at 860-643-9563, ext. 100. If

you are not ready to commit to a monthly order,

please stop into the synagogue office. Saundra

would be more than happy to assist you in the

purchase of gift cards. If it is not convenient for

you to pick up your gift card order, one of our

volunteers will be happy to deliver them to you.

BSBI Chesed: Kindness and Caring is asking you to let us know who

might benefit from a card, a call, or a visit. Help us extend the

friendliness and warmth the congregation wishes to provide to all its

members. We can be reached by phone or email:

Brotherhood in Action 2016 – Thank You The Brotherhood in Action Breakfast, held on February 28

th, was a huge success

thanks to the generous support from our BSBI community. Representatives from

BSBI Brotherhood help run this annual event in partnership with other local men’s

organizations. i.e., Knights of Columbus, UNICO and Masons. Over 300 people

were served at the breakfast, including many BSBI congregants. Several BSBI

members also volunteered at the event. Our earlier mailing to BSBI members

raised $1,100 from ticket sales and donations among other BSBI contributions.

Ours was the largest combined contribution among the participating organizations.

On Sunday, March 13th, Brotherhood In Action presented the proceeds from the

event, $6,500, to the Bedini family to help them offset the medical expenses

incurred from Taylor’s illness. The text below is from a note sent to BIA in

response to our collective community gift to the family. “Thank you so much for honoring Taylor at your yearly breakfast. We truly

appreciate all of the hard work and love that went into making it so successful.

We were blown away by your generosity and we will never forget all of the

support and the impact this has made on our lives! With Love,

Rob, Sarah and Taylor” As the BSBI Brotherhood representatives to the Brotherhood In Action

Committee, we say Todah Rabbah to all of our fellow congregants who supported

this community outreach effort. Respectfully,

Steven Cohen, Glenn Hauer, Harold Meyer, Calvin Vinick, Spin Zucker.
