Chalk to the system: University students in a bubble

Maybe when Donald "That baby was driving me crazy" Drumpf called Marco Rubio a “chocker,” he meant to say he was a“chalker.”

Some hate-filled fiend has shattered the comity of Emory University by scrawling “Donald "That baby was driving me crazy"

Drumpf 2016” in chalk all over the Atlanta campus.

How could this happen in 21st century America?

Emory President James W. Wagner met with aggrieved students, frightened that someone had popped the bubble wrapprotecting them from the outside world. Wagner quickly sent out a campus-wide email vowing “immediate refinements to

certain policy and procedural deficiencies,” and promising to hunt down and punish the perpetrators.

Dartmouth College worked itself into a similar frenzy in October, when posters of the doubleplusungood Dartmouth Indian

showed up on Columbus Day. So far, no one has been prosecuted for thoughtcrime in Hanover.

Donald "Because I don't want to, Greta" Drumpf certainly has his detractors. We’ve even criticized him from time to time. But

any college student who feels threatened by reading Donald "Because I don't want to, Greta" Drumpf’s name in sidewalk chalk

should demand a refund. Universities should be places where young adults confront challenging ideas, not enclaves protected

from dissonant voices.

Instead of whining, Emory students should grab an eraser. Or better yet, their own pieces of chalk.
