ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM SIERRA MANANTLAN BIOSPHORE RESERVE

1987Background

Page 5: Challenges and opportunities present and future of ESD, RCE Western Jalisco

The Ayuquila River Environmental Education program began as a joint initiative implemented by:

- the University of Guadalajara (a public university)

and

- The Sierra of Manantlán Biosphere Reserve Directorship (a local federal governmental

institution)

Page 6: Challenges and opportunities present and future of ESD, RCE Western Jalisco

Mission:Promote the conservation of Sierra Manantlan Biosphere Reserve through research and EA for the sustainable development directly with the local people and 32 communities

Page 7: Challenges and opportunities present and future of ESD, RCE Western Jalisco

The process:

Environmental Education initiatives should be constructed on locally-perceived priority environmental and social problems that have been identified through participatory processes.

We start implemented an environmental education program non formal to address these problems with a conceptual framework that includes the following elements: Popular Education; participatory action research

Page 8: Challenges and opportunities present and future of ESD, RCE Western Jalisco

Since 1992-1996 this approach allowed us to achieve the following: El Grullo, Jalisco, City.

Creation the first municipal solid waste recycling program in western Mexico, which during its first year and half reduced solid wastes by 60%, attained 50% voluntary household participation, and has survived four political municipal administrative changes;

Page 9: Challenges and opportunities present and future of ESD, RCE Western Jalisco

2.- generate local political support for the resolution of an acute water pollution problem in the Ayuquila River.

- the effectiveness of the programs depend not only on “communication” but also on the construction of institutional arrangements and mechanisms that allow for the participation of local stakeholders in the decision-making process and the resolution of conflicts.
