    FROM the PRESIDENT

    CANANDAIGUA

    CHAMBER of COMMERCE

    TABLE of CONTENTS

As I reect on the Chambers past year, I amvery proud of what was accomplished in 2013.Through staff changes, board changes, or justchanges in the world, the Canandaigua Chamber has maintained our place as the go-to businessorganization for business growth and advocacy. We are able to do this through the ongoingsupport and engagement of our membership.

The beginning of 2013 continued a transition atthe chamber of new staff. I could not be happierwith the Chamber team that has been in placesince March. Fresh perspectives from Becky,Thomas and Kelly, mixed with the wisdom ofChamber experience from Elisha and I, havealready proven to be helpful. Our Chamberteam brings together complementary skill sets, knowledge, and expertise that enable us to serveour membership and the community at a very high level. With everyones inaugural year nearlycomplete, I expect great things from the team this

year and into the future. An expanded focus on economic developmentcontinued in 2013 with the rst year ofour contract for services with the City ofCanandaigua. The Chamber staff and economic developmentcommittee has stayed extremely busy workingon a variety of projects, beginning our businessretention and expansion program, working withthe Zoning and Code Enforcement Taskforceto create recommended changes in this area tothe City, continuing to build relationships with

important economic development stakeholderson both the local, regional and state levels, and building the database of available properties inCanandaigua for both sale and lease. One of our goals this year was to make theChamber the go-to place for economicdevelopment. I feel very condent that we havedone this and have begun to make the Chambersname synonymous with economic development.

As you will read the Year in Review section ofthis report the Chamber held a number of very

successful events in 2013. These events, whether big or small, serve as great opportunities fomembers to connect and build their business andcommunity.

At the end of this year, we were pleased toadd a new benet to our membership. On- line Chamber-U is now available through apartnership that we established with Coggno.

Online learning is a growing trend and I ampleased we are able to provide this service to oumembers.Moving ahead into 2014, I am anticipating aneven stronger focus on Economic DevelopmentWe will hopefully see the beginning of the NorthShore Canandaigua project and possibly a couplof others. The Chamber will also be adding a part timeYoung Entrepreneurs Academy programcoordinator. We believe strongly in this programthat we started in the fall of 2012. This positionwill give the program the dedicated attention andtime it needs to see it thrive. The staff will also be focusing its energy onmembership retention, ensuring that ourmembers are aware and are taking advantage ofthe benets that the Chamber provides. As alwayswe will also be looking to grow our membershipwith businesses looking to grow and engage inthe Canandaigua community. Additionally, wewill be giving our members new opportunitiesfor advertising on the Chambers website.

I would like to end by expressing my sincerethanks to our 2013 Chair, Floyd Rayburn, theChamber Board and staff. It is through their hardwork, time and dedication to the Chamber that2013 was the successful year that it was! I lookforward to working with our new board and theChamber team to make 2014 another great yearfor the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce.

It was an honor to serve as the Chairman of the Boardof the Greater Canandaigua Chamber of Commercefor 2013. I had the pleasure of working with a very

engaged board of directors along with Alison and herstaff.2013 was the rst year of a three year economicdevelopment contract the chamber has with the Cityof Canandaigua. Fifteen community minded leaderssit on our economic development committee. Thepeople on this committee have met with very fewcancellations every two weeks this year. Along withthat, we set up a zoning and code enforcement taskforce to bring to light any road blocks there may be to businesses wanting to locate here. In 2013, we worked with over20 different possible start-up businesses. We also set up a databasethat is on the chambers website of available properties for new

businesses to start up and existing to expand. This database isalso on the Greater Rochester Enterprises website. The chamber has continued to have a close working relationship with citystaff, GRE, and the Ontario County IDA. Being a CHAMBER ofCOMMERCE, it only makes sense for the chamber to be a majoreconomic driver for the area. This is becoming a national trend. This past June, we graduated our rst Young EntrepreneurialAcademy Class. I had the pleasure of teaching seven young mindsfor 30 weeks with a lot of help from Alison and Elisha. This wasan experience like no other. I think I learned as much from themas they did from me. It was a huge success and in November westarted our 2nd YEA class. YEA sponsorships have increasedover last year and we hope to continue that trend.

All the chamber events were very well attendedand revenue increased. The ATHENA dinner held at FLCC was the single most attended

event in recent history with 403 attendees. We held the Anniversary Gala at The Inn on theLake with the North Shore Project presentation, which was extremely well attended and veryinformative. At the business awards luncheonwe had a walk down memory lane with BruceKennedy as he gave us a history lesson on MainStreet, which was also well attended, and Brucedid a great job.It has been said that in business, you are only

as good as your weakest link. This Chamber team has proven t be a very strong, positive, forward thinking one! Many accoladego out to Alison Grems, President/CEO; Thomas Lyon, Econom

Development Specialist; Kelly Rotter, Administrative AssistanBecky Simmons, Director of Membership and Visitor Serviceand Elisha Snow, Communications & Events Coordinator. Thisyear was Elishas 10 year anniversary at the chamber. It has also been said that youre only as good as the people yosurround yourself with. I was very fortunate to have many peopldonate their time and effort as they too, want Canandaiguato be The Chosen Place. Thank you to all volunteers, Boarmembers, committee members and staff.I now leave the Board Chairmanship in the very capable hands oRandy Farnsworth.

    2013 CHAIRPERSON - FLOYD RAYBURN

As we enter the New Year, 2014 begins with hopeand expectations that this year will be one ofcontinuous improvement.Through the dedicated efforts of the ChamberBoard of Directors, the Chamber Staff, theChamber Committee Members, the ChamberVolunteers, the Mayor, the City Manager, the CityCouncil, the IDA, and many community leaders,2013 was a year lled with focus, determination, and a revitalized commitment to excellence at your

Chamber of Commerce.Unquestionably, New York State faces numerouschallenges; both real and perceived. But the business owners and public ofcials of the Greater Canandaiguaarea realize that great expectations only lead to great resultsthrough the combined efforts of many moving in harmonytowards common goals. That is our competitive advantage, thatis the difference our community provides, that is why we look atevery new challenge as an opportunity to prove Canandaigua isthe Chosen Spot.We are blessed to have a strong regional health system inThompson health, a UR: Strong Health Afliate, the CanandaiguaAcademy and surrounding school districts along with FLCC

offering excellence at the primary and secondary level of education. Also, STC (Smart SystemTechnology and Commercialization Center) aSUNY College of Nano-Science and Engineerinfurther offers us many opportunities for regionaleconomic development. With the expansion of thCanandaigua Airport complete, Canandaigua isprimed for positive growth. Finally, our contract with the city to performeconomic development, the YEA program, th

ATHENA Program, our special events and theongoing service commitment to our membershipwill be the continued focus of our team.

In closing, I want to thank Floyd Rayburn and the previouschairs that I have had the opportunity to work with: Bill FugeRuss Kenyon, and Jack Moran. Your hours of dedicated servicand leadership along with Alisons team have provided th building blocks and core beliefs and values to expect more greaccomplishments in 2014.To all our members, I hope you continue to join with us and help make the greater Canandaigua area a place to Make More Memories.
