The annual awards program of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce is the largest single celebration o f e x c e l l e n c e i n o u r com mu n it ies. The event, held Thursday, Jan. 24, at the Ramada Conference Center, will be a total sellout - with C h a m b e r m e m b e r s a nd others joining to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of award winners.

2013 marks The Chamber's 125th annual meeting and there will be 15 individuals a n d / o r o r g a n i z a t i o n s receiv ing t he prest ig ious awards – but many, many o t h e r b u s i n e s s e s a n d organizations are deserving of recog nit ion. This yea r there were 45 nominations of people who have done remarkable t hings in our c om mu n it ie s--w ho h ave cont r ibuted to ou r loca l

T h e m u c h h e r a l d e d r e v i t a l i z a t i o n o f t h e L e w i s t o n - A u b u r n community is being led by an ever more robust business community that has been creat i ng a nd preser v i ng j o b s , n u r t u r i n g f e l l o w entrepreneurs, supporting the civic infrastructure of L-A, and helping make the A nd r o s c o g g i n C h a m b er the most dynamic business organization in Maine.

T he R ay G eiger Aw a rd , na med i n honor of t he brother who f irst brought Geiger Brothers to Lewiston and who became a tireless c o m m u n i t y a d v o c a t e , has often been conferred on people who have had close connect ions to t he Chamber and have served the organization in various capacities. Few people have demonstrated longer or more substantive support of the Chamber than this year’s recipient of this prestigious award, Larry Raymond of the law firm of Isaacson and Raymond. Engaged in active

service with the Chamber for nearly half a centur y, Raymond first served as chair of the Chamber board from 1967-1969, then again for three more terms between 19 9 9 -2 0 0 5, f ol low e d b y continued ser v ice on the Regional Image Committee.

The Business Leadership Award for a larger company w i l l b e p r e s e n t e d t o Ca rbonite. Ra n ked 51st Fastest Growing Company in North America on Deloitte’s 2 01 2 Te c h n o l o g y F a s t 500(TM), an international leader in providing backup protect ion for computer d a t a , C a r b o n i t e h a s re c overe d more t h a n 7 billion potentially lost files. Less than two years ago, the company chose Lew iston as home for its customer service center, bringing back to America scores of jobs that had previously been filled in India. The company employs more than 350 people and has been the recipient of numerous regional, national, and internationa l honors since its founding in 2010.

There will be two Business L e a d e r s h ip Aw a r d s f or smaller companies. The first wil l be presented to Next Level Business Coaching and Kurk Lalemand. Dedicated to helping clients grow and prosper, Lalemand has twice been declared “Coach of the Year,” by the Professional Business Coaches Alliance of Canton Ohio, the only i nd iv idua l ever to have been a multiple recipient of his indust r y’s highest recognition. Lalemand has been a staunch advocate for the Chamber and has served as board chair. The second will be conferred on Katahdin Studio Furniture a n d Jo h n S t a s s . S i n c e 1997, t hey have created h a n d c r a f t e d h a r d w o o d f u r n it u re for t he mu sic room, the home, churches, museums, l ibra r ies, etc., for some of America's best k n o w n m u s i c i a n s a n d celebrities including such notable figures as Melissa Etheridge and the late Andy Grif f ith. Since 2000, they have been located at the top of the historic Hill Mill, in Lewiston.

Two Communit y Ser v ice Leadership Awards will be presented again this year, further ref lecting the scope of exceptional contributions to the quality of life in L-A. The first will be given to Rita Dube for her extraordinary ef for t s to est abl i sh t he Franco American Heritage C e n t e r a s a p r e m i e r e p e r f o r m a n c e v e n u e i n Lewiston-Auburn and as a great place for functions of all kinds. Dube retired as the Center’s first and only director in December, in the process having helped save the historic St. Mary’s Church from the wrecking

ball and facilitating millions of dol lars of renovat ions and improvements. But the Franco Center was just the latest in a long line of civic engagements by one of the community’s most treasured leaders.

T he second Com mu n it y S e r v i c e Aw a r d w i l l b e presented to Tree Street Y o u t h a n d f o u n d e r s Ju l i a S le e p e r a nd K i m Pelletier. A program which b e g a n a s a h o m e w o r k help program in 2005 has grown geometrically into a comprehensive center for

downtown young people to get help with their studies, apply for post-secondar y s c h o o l s , a nd g e n e r a l l y m a i n t a i n a n u r t u r i n g environment. Located in the heart of downtown Lewiston at 144 Howe Street, it serves as a v ibrant hub of dai ly yout h-driven act iv it y for 120-150 students in grades K-12 and is the only center solely focused on meeting the educational and social needs of at-risk youth.

COMMUNITY

The Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce functions at the convergence of business, education, public service, and community. At the height of awards season each year, t he Cha mber recog ni zes those whose contributions to the quality of life in our towns in the past year were among the particularly notable.

Dick Roy, of Mecha n ics S a v i n g s B a n k , w h o s e i l lustrious 30-year career in loca l ba n k ing a nd as a n adv isor to cou nt less area businesses absolutely p e r s o n i f i e s t h e v a l u e s honored by the Ken Additon Small Business Advocate Award. The award has been conferred annua l ly since 2004 to t hose who best embody Additon's unique spi r it a nd ded icat ion to his clients. Additon was a great friend to the Chamber a nd t he sma l l bu si ness communit y, a nd a l l past recipients of this award have cited Additon's inspiration as the source of their own motivation.

A u b u r n ’ s i n n o v a t i v e alternative education high school is among the most

suc c e s sf u l prog r a m s of its k ind any where in the country. It has been a model of transformation for young people at potent ia l r isk, helping them transition into productive adult members of ou r com mu n it y. T he program is administered by principal Russ Barlow, who works direct ly w it h t he business communit y t o i d e n t i f y w o r k- s t u d y o p p o r t u n i t i e s f o r h i s students, a nd has direct personal relationships with each individual participant i n t h is g rou nd-brea k i ng program, as wel l. Barlow is the 2013 recipient of the Chamber’s Education Award.

For the fourth consecutive yea r, t he C ha mber w i l l present the Cool Chamber Award to an entity which ha s m ade a s ig n i f ic a nt d i f f e r e n c e i n r e d u c i n g

energy usage and preserving resources. Auburn’s Procter and Gamble – Tambrands, a m o n g t h e l a r g e s t commercial employers in the twin cities, announced a l on g-t e r m v i s i on f or environmental sustainability in 2010 a nd has a lready achieved the goal of sending zero waste to landfills.

“Having the opportunity to select those organizations or indiv idua ls I consider to be especially worthy of recognition each year is one of the greatest perks of the presidency of the Chamber,” Ch ip Mor r ison bel ieves. This year, there will be two recipients of the President’s Award. Presented only when appropriate recipients have been identified, the first of this year’s awards will be conferred on The Vault, and owner Susan Hall. Purveyors

of fine specialty wines and exceptional craft beers, Hall's unique shop has been among the driv ing forces in the revitalization of Lewiston’s Lisbon Street neighborhood, and through a variet y of wine and beer tastings and ot her specia l events has supported a growing list of area nonprofit and charitable efforts, as well.

T he s e c ond P r e sident’s Awa rd w i l l be presented to Emile Clavet and Kevin D e a n , f ou nd e r s of t h e i n n o v a t i v e a l t e r n a t i v e e l e c t r i c i t y p r o d u c e r , Electricity Maine, which ha s prov ided a w ay for c o n s u m e r s a n d s m a l l businesses to save money on their electricity bills. This yea r t hey a re ex pa nding to Ne w Ha mpsh i re a nd are planning several other states. The entrepreneurial

team of Clavet and Dean has started more than 20 businesses in the past two decades and they have been full participants in the local business community. They are being honored for their true entrepreneurial spirit.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

For t he f i r s t t i me, t he You ng P r ofe s sion a l s of the Lewiston Auburn Area (YPLA A) will present their own awards as part of the Chamber’s annual meeting program. YPLAA is a division of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce and is a part of REALIZE!Maine’s statewide initiative aiming to develop a net work of young people to promote and expand on professional

and personal opportunities in Maine. YPLA A works to strengthen a vibrant young professional community by promoting career, social, and community development.

T he f i rst of t wo Y PL A A awards will be presented to Travis Dow, head of sales for Uncle Andy’s Digest. In the past two years, Dow has launched the Maine Home Show, an opportunity for more than 100 vendors of home-related products and services like landscaping, pool and spa pros, insulation

Dow’s other recent effort is MenusInLA.com, an online directory of local restaurants.

The second YPLAA honoree is Cam Luu, owner/operator of Wei Li Chinese restaurant, i n A u b u r n , w h o w a s nominated for his “generosity of spirit,” and support for musicians at ELHS, the folk dance programs at Lewiston P ubl ic L ibra r y, a nd t he

Franco American Heritage C e n t e r, a m o n g o t h e r s . Recognition of his dedication t o t h e s u p p o r t o f t h e cultural development of his adopted home community comes despite Luu's largely anonymous efforts in the course of the past 10 years.

T h e 2 0 1 2 C h a m b e r ’s New Member of the Year awa rd w i l l be presented Revelation Massage, whose mission is “to increase the wellness of individuals and communities.” The mission is accomplished by delivering high-quality, customized, and user-friendly massage t h e r a p y t o i t s c l i e n t s , a nd t he com m it ment to c o m m u n i t y o u t r e a c h initiatives include offering e duc a t ion t o t he lo c a l community, and supporting t he a r ts, educat ion, a nd

h e a l t h o r g a n i z a t i o n s through financial support and outreach initiatives. In their first year of operation, ow ner K i m Jacques ha s been a n act ive member of The Chamber Regional Image Committee and an ambassador at almost every single Chamber event over the past year.

Part of the vitality of the L -A c om mu n it y i s t h at it i s t he ser v ic e c enter anchor of a larger civic and business community, and t h e C h a m b e r a n nu a l l y r e c og n i z e s out s t a nd i ng regional business leadership as well.

The 2013 Poland Business Awa rd w i l l be presented to Jones Associates, state-l icen sed a nd nat iona l ly c e r t i f i e d p r o f e s s i o n a l foresters, licensed surveyors, wet la nd biolog i st s , a nd i nd iv idua ls t ra i ned a nd e x p er ienc e d i n er o sion

control techniques and all facets of mitigation design. The newest program in the f irm’s 20-year history has been the formation of an environmental restoration services division which uses specialized equipment to implement restoration and mit igat ion/compensat ion projects.

The Lisbon Business Award will be presented to Benoit’s

Baker y and Wine Cellar. Specialists in the creation of artisan cakes, breads, and pastr ies, Benoit’s unique wine cellar offers a selection of more than 500 bott les, along with a consultation ser v ice to help faci l itate exactly the right choice. Nick Benoit’s goal was to create “a great classic feel combined with a nostalgic atmosphere.”

The Turner Business Award will be presented to Ricker Hill Orchards, which has been g row ing apples for

10 generations, since 1803. Donuts, pies, a corn maze; school tours and other kids’ activ it ies, and an on-site disc golf course, are all part of the total experience, but the orchards have always been about apples – modern, hei rloom, specia lt y, a nd t radit iona l Ma ine crops. In t he mid 1990s, Ricker expanded into cranberr y cu lt ivat ion, a n ef for t to diversify crops and provide another delectable, locally harvested fruit.
