Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce

What an incredible night we had at our Awards Dinner and Installation of our 2020 Board of Directors! Many awards and recognition were given to the outgoing board members who served their two 3-year terms with integrity, adding value to the chamber with their leadership. There was also a heart-felt welcoming to the “new” members to the Board of Directors. Starting with this new idea to marry the previous two separate events, an awards breakfast and then followed by an installation breakfast…we’re already off to a “different than before” start for 2020! “New” Board Members are in quote marks because we have three past Board Chairs who were sworn in as board members, bringing their expertise forward, and making this year’s board stronger than ever! I am so incredibly grateful for the dedication and quality they bring to our Chamber leadership.

With new events that we have planned throughout the year, my focus is on adding value to each and every member, and how together we can accomplish greater things. These are really put in to play already. I was always taught that you’re stronger with a team, and accomplishments can be celebrated together. I am so grateful for the enthusiasm and support the board has given me and to the new and continued events, and we are so very excited for our plans to come together. Many of the new events are planned with different ideas and targets in mind - a “think outside of the box” approach involving the community, getting your name out there, and always working closely with you to showcase your business or organization and maximize your membership! You never know if the next person you meet could be your next best customer. So let’s be kind to one another, because together we can change the world.

John Ulrich Lions Club of Laguna Niguel To many, John Ulrich just seems to be everywhere. A true “Super Volunteer,” John was named the Laguna Niguel “Citizen of the Year” for 2019 and it is a well-deserved honor. If you have been to virtually any

Chamber event in the past several years, you would have seen John Ulrich taking on responsibility to help make things go smoothly.A 15 year resident of Laguna Niguel, John was an executive in the high tech computer industry with Motorola Internet and Networking Group and was the Vice President of Operations at Gateway Computers. John was a key change agent at the key executive level where he oversaw operations in multiple departments within the enterprise business.Among his high profile project leadership roles, John served as Project Director for 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and was the primary change agent of the UK business unit. He has enjoyed a long history of community service of over 40 years as he moved around the country and London. Since his retirement he has immersed himself in Laguna Niguel service opportunity in a diverse way to support Laguna Niguel wherever the need has existed. John is one of the most visible and active volunteers in the community, actively serving on the City of Laguna Niguel’s Military Support Committee and Senior Committee, the Niguel Botanical Preserve board, and in regional and local leadership for the Lions Club. John holds an BA for Wayne State University and an MBA from University of Michigan. What stands out to you from your experiences at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics? The Motorola CEO, Bob Galvin, assigned me to coordinate the digital scoring, videos and interface for the entire Olympics operation. We worked on it for over two years leading up to the Games. I had “Infinity" access for the full 19 days of the Olympic Games and got to spend time with Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson and “The Dream Team” and observe President Bush exchanging Olympics pins with the Russian swimming team.. What was the best business lesson you ever received? Communicate well with those on your team. Be fair to everyone and treat every day like it is your employee review. What did you learn in the U.S. Air Force that you have carried over to professional life? The computer skills that drove my entire career. I had three job offers the day I left the Air Force, and I was able to progress from low level technician into Tech Support and then into management, and I ended up the VP of Operations at Gateway, responsible for over $4 Billion in business each year. What is your best/most interesting Chamber memory? Working closely with dozens of fellow Chamber members at our Beer & Wine Garden at the city’s Community Carnival, and at the annual Pancake Breakfast on July 4th each year. The hard work and camaraderie are just the best.

Mary Smith Allen Family Motors

When something big is going to happen at the Laguna Niguel Chamber, you can bet that Mary Smith will play a leadership role in getting it done right. One of the most respected businesspeople in our community, Mary has been a local icon at our Chamber and in the automobile business for over 30 years. Born in Ohio and raised up the road in Long Beach, Mary moved to San Clemente in 1975 and has lived in Laguna Niguel with her husband Jim since 1987. She had worked a weekend receptionist position at a San Diego dealership, so she applied to a dealership in Mission Viejo. The first call-back she received was from that BMW dealership.Mary started with Allen Family Automotive Group in 1981. With a natural ability to organize, implement and manage people and situations, Mary worked her way up the hard way and was promoted from Office Manager to Controller, and then became the Chief Financial Officer for the Allen Group in 2005. Her leadership at the Chamber and with the Allen Group has left an indelibly strong mark with all with whom she has come into contact. What drives you every day? I embraced the challenge of learning all the different functions of the auto business. While at the bank and then here at Allen I found working with and training staff and developing improvement processes was what drove me to make the business better. What is the best business lesson you ever received? I have learned so many business lessons in my career. Treat people as you would expect them to treat you, or better. Listen first, speak last, hear all sides of an issue before making a decision, but don’t delay decisions! Act, but not by reacting. Lastly, know that there is always something that you don’t know. It’s what you don’t know that gets you! What is your “dream car?” I have been in the fortunate position for over 30 years to have a new car provided to me every 4,000 miles and I have driven most of our product lines. When we were a Saab dealer I drove a turbo convertible all summer, which was a blast. I have to admit the luxury of a Cadillac sedan, the interior designs, the great ride - rates high on my list. You do so much behind the scenes. Would you rather lead, follow or get out of the way? I love to lead. After all, I have been a “Controller’ for the last 25 years or so!! I am take-charge and also have strong opinions. I know this about myself, so I make the effort to step back and let others direct so that the shape of the decisions isn’t always my view. Or my way.

A large contingent of Chamber members joined elected officials and their representatives, along with the staff of the brand new Broadstone Vilara apartment community for a fantastic evening of great food, music and camaraderie on January 16th.The evening kicked off with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony as only the Laguna Niguel Chamber could put on. The overflow crowd got into the action by lining up on a spectacular winding staircase above Vilara’s beautiful front lobby and cheering on the ribbon cutting. Broadstone’s ownership group and local staff were on hand, and were presented proclamations (pictured on this page) from the City of Laguna Niguel by Mayor Laurie Davies, County Supervisor Lisa Bartlett by Community Rep Sergio Prince, the State Senate and Assembly by Community Representative Melissa Caldwell, and the Chamber by our new Chair, Michelle Endo.

Prescription Medication Take Back ResultsDue to increased community involvement and through the hard work of our dedicated Police Services team, the 2019 ‘Prescription Take Back Events’ were a great success! Laguna Niguel Police Services personnel collected a total of 965 pounds of unwanted, unused, or expired prescription medications. These events are part of the City’s ongoing efforts to prevent drug use and to keep prescription medications out of the wrong hands. As a reminder, Laguna Niguel Police Services accepts prescription medications for proper disposal at the Police Services Headquarters (30111 Crown Valley Parkway) Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. We encourage all residents to take advantage of this free resource.

Laguna Niguel Business WatchLaguna Niguel Police Services offers businesses the opportunity to become part of ‘Business Watch’ – a crime prevention program that enlists the active participation of citizens, in cooperation with law enforcement, to reduce commercial crime in the community. Laguna Niguel business owners often know what is going on in the community and with their participation in ‘Business Watch’, crimes may be prevented in the community.

‘Business Watch’ members place a decal in their business’ front window and post Business Watch signs on their commercial property, warning criminals that they are in an active Business Watch Community, and that business owners in this area are

looking out for each other. Each member of ‘Business Watch’ is also assigned a member number (on decal) which is used to contact business owners in case of an afterhours emergency. Contact Laguna Niguel Police Services Crime Prevention Specialist Kimberly Sawyer at (949) 362-4305 for more information or to join.

RICK RIEGLE TO ANSWER FOUR QUESTIONS AT OUR FIRST NETWORKING BREAKFAST OF 2020

2020 looks like an exceptional year for the Chamber’s famous Monthly Networking Breakfasts, and the morning gathering on February 18, 2020 is a great way to kick off the year. The Chamber Spotlight will be on the world of finances and investment, and nobody could be better to share some light on that ever-changing environment than our 2018 Board Chair and our current Treasurer, Rick Riegle of EdwardJones. Rick was raised in Orange County but ventured north to Pullman, Washington and attended Washington State University. He met his

future wife, Sue, at her cousin’s wedding in Spokane and (because of her) moved to Seattle after graduation. They raised their three children there until they had the opportunity to move back to California for a position with the Orange County Register. Ten years ago, Rick kick-started back to school at UC Irvine to become a Certified Financial Planner and soon started his second career with EdwardJones, one of America’s leading financial management firms. Once they established themselves with the firm’s office in Laguna Niguel, Rick’s first move was to join the Laguna Niguel Chamber, and he has been a leader in the Chamber ever since. He loves living and working in this great community and spending time with his four grandkids and Sue. As Rick often says, “I have the great fortune of going to work every day at a career that I truly love and to volunteer for a fantastic organization where I have made many great friends.”Come hear Rick answer those Four Questions on February 18th. It promises to be informative and entertaining.
