And finally, I’d like to give a special thanks to outgoing President Susan Fulmer, who will be staying on the board in an ex officio role. I’m excited to be your new president. I have been a part of the Chamber on and off for 14 years, most recently as a board member. Boys and GirLs

cLuB neWs Outstanding is the only way to describe the start of the new year at the Boys & Girls Club! New kids, new pro-grams, new staff and new volunteers and last but not least new bathrooms made January truly OUTSTANDING. First we want to thank our friends at the Senior Center who have shared their bathrooms with us since November as the county made our bathrooms accessible for those in wheelchairs! Hopefully no one at the Center kept track of how many times we have gone there to use the bathrooms, but we quit counting at 250!!! Once again they proved themselves to be great neighbors! A new grant from the US Office of Judicial Programs will bring an evidence-based program called “Positive Actions” to our 3rd and 4th graders. As an add on for this program, we are looking for adult volunteers who are willing to serve as mentors, volunteering one hour a month with an awe-some kid! Call the Club at 665-4466 for more information about this opportunity. Everyone at the Club is working on being G.R.E.A.T. (Generous, Respectful, Encouraging, Accountable, and Trustworthy) as part of our character education. We’ll be enthusiastically enjoying our annual spring ‘Club Divided’ tradition as we all choose purple or gold sides to celebrate College Night at UM. What color will those celebration cup-cakes be this year… gold or purple? The biggest news is that the Teen Center (located at the Scout Lodge) will soon be a reality here in Montevallo! Our full-time Teen Center Coordinator, Lindsey Gannoway is preparing to open the door on February 8 at 3 pm. The Center will be open from 3 to 7 pm each school day. The staff will work with members to decide what programs they will offer and to make the Teen Center a welcoming and fun place for Montevallo students ages 12 to 18. Cost for mem-bership is $25 per year, and a trial two-week membership is available for $1. A meeting will be held at Parnell Library on February 2 at 6 pm at the Parnell Library to answer ques-tions, and receive suggestions from our community.

MonteVaLLo’s arBor day is sat., feB. 27 The City of Montevallo has declared Saturday, February 27th as Arbor Day. Montevallo’s 24th Annual Arbor Day is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Orr Park Recreation Building. More than 700 trees & tree seedlings will be available for adoption by residents of Montevallo and surrounding towns and communities. Also, there will be drawings for large trees and planting supplies. The day’s activities include a panel of urban and community tree experts to answer your questions about trees. There will be demonstrations on proper tree planting, pruning and tree care. This year’s vendors include: Green Valley Nursery, Cedar Creek Nursery, Montevallo Civitan Club Recycling Display, Tim Tingle and his wood carvings, Shelby County Master Gardeners, Cahaba River Society, University of Montevallo Environmental Club & Ebenezer Swamp Committee, Aldrich Coal Mine Museum, Montevallo Community Garden, Living River Retreat, Alabama Wildlife Center, Alabama Forestry Commission, and Alabama Urban Forestry Association. More vendors are committing every day to participate. Again this year, we are fortunate to have Randy Glover from Centreville with his pictures of the Cahaba Lilies. Randy is an excellent source of information on the rare Cahaba Lilies. Members of the Montevallo Trail Committee will be present with pictures and maps of Montevallo’s Walking Trails. The artist himself, Tim Tingle, will host a walking tour of the Tree Carvings in Orr Park plus there will be a guided tour of Ebenezer Swamp. Any questions about this year’s Arbor Day, please call City Hall at 665-2555 (extension 101) or the Arbor Day Chair, Herschel Hale, at 616-0671.
