Soap Box Derby Rolling At Full Speed What’s The Buzz? Our Man About Town R.L. Crabb Bob Crabb grew up in Nevada Coun- ty and has spent most of his adult life work- ing in and around Nevada City. But it’s most likely that you know him best as the creator of the It Takes A Village Idiot cartoon strip that runs in The Union on Tuesdays and Saturdays. He credits Dan O’Neil, in1979, with mentoring him in the art of the strip and, one way or another, Crabb has been drawing cartoon strips and comic books ever since. Over the years he has developed his own unique style which you might recognize on this year’s Soap Box Derby poster which he created. In addition to creating strips for local papers like The Independent, The Moun- tain Messenger and Nevada City News he worked in San Francisco’s high-octane un- derground comic book world with the likes of Phil Frank, Hunter Thompson, Paul Krassner and Robert Crumb. Through it all, Crabb feels a deep connection to Nevada City. “Some years ago, I was informed by a city official that one of my comic books was included in the materials placed in the time capsule at the new City Hall. I guess a part of me will always remain in Nevada City, at least for the next 150 years.” Event co-ordinator Rich Bodine is assembling the final pieces for Nevada City’s first Annual Soap Box Derby taking place on Nimrod Street next to Pioneer Park. There will be a total of 49 heats before the ultimate winner sprays the air with champagne in the winning gesture of all great champions. In addition to the races, there will be pine wood derby races hosted by the Cub Scouts and a putting contest hosted by The Friendship Club. There will be multiple food vendors and a beer and wine garden. Touchdown Produc- tions will film and later televise the races on NCTV. And of course there will be commemorative t-shirts. This is a free event with proceeds benefitting The Pioneer Park Project. Go to www.ncderby.com for information or to contact Rich Bodine with any questions.
