Dr.Somphone DOUANGDARAPresident of Lao Airlines

Welcome on Board

I am truly proud to witness the recent dramatic growth to 600,000 passengers selecting to fly on Laos Airlines. Laos’ flagship carrier credits better market trends compared to previous years and a higher level of service quality for this expansion. Further, the airline is also experiencing a sharp increase in cargo transport. On top of this, Lao Airlines is continuing to expand its domestic and international routes to offer more options for busi-ness passengers and tourists.

In less than two years, the ASEAN Economic Com-munity (AEC) will come into force, which includes an open sky policy. This will inevitably create stronger regional competition among airlines and the services they offer. To remain competitive and continue to expand, Lao Airlines will continue to take action to improve and strengthen its service standards and facilities for passengers. With my best wishes,

LAO AIRLINES IN-FLIGHT MAGAzINE

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the 19th issue of Champa Holidays magazine for October and November 2013, as we enter the months when tourists flood the country. The intermittent rainfalls during “Adventure Season” tend to end after the Festival for the Dead (Boun Khao Salak), which falls on 19 October this year, or for those following the lunar calendar, the 15th night of the 11th month of the year 2556, known as “The Year of the Little Serpent”.

In this issue, you will explore much of what’s new for this year’s peak tourism season. Topping the list is a brand new natural adventure activity, “The Vang Vieng Challenge”, which scales a waterfall using a cable system and suspension bridges to a bril-liant mountaintop sunset view, and a forest overnight with din-ing on local dishes in an authentic green atmosphere set in pris-tine nature. The sunrise and abseiling descent is equally thrilling and a great opportunity to really dive into the local nature while catching an adrenaline rush. You’ll walk away with a memorable experience to last a lifetime.

Readers will also discover the latest activities, hotels and restau-rants in Singapore, one of Lao Airlines international destinations closer to home, this issue reveals the newest Vientiane restau-rants and hotels. And for a great Lao adventure, Champa Holidays takes you on a wild 4WD excursion looping Luang Namtha on rough trails.

Sabaidee, and we will see you in our next issue.

19th oct End of Buddhist Lent, Boun Awk Phansa is the final day of the three-lunar-month Buddhist Lent, during which monks, novices, and Buddhist men stay and pray in temples, and are not allowed to travel, except for emergencies. Phansa means “year” or “rainy season”, during which this holy period occurs. On the dawn of Boun Awk Phansa, followers donate money and make offerings at temples around the country. In the evening, Buddhists hold candle-light processions around the temples, followed by the Lai Heua Fai or Loi Ka Thong celebration, when the faithful send small candle-lit “‘boats” - constructed with slices from banana tree trunks or leaves and decorated with candles and flowers - down the local rivers.

5th oct 20th oct Vientiane Boat Racing FestivalThe Boat Racing Festival in Vientiane marks the end of Buddhist Lent, or Boun Awk Phansa. While many boat racing festivals are held throughout the various Lao provinces, the Vientiane event is the largest. Massive crowds head to the river-front, with nearby roads blocked off to accommo-date the massive crowd, carnival attractions, and hundreds of vendors selling food, clothes, and a variety of goods. Beer gardens, craft stalls, res-taurant rows, game booths, and amusement park rides cover the festival’s expanse, which stretches over a kilometre along the riverfront.

Upcoming Festivals, Events, and Important Dates

17th NovThat Luang FestivalThe traditional five to seven day That Luang Festival has been held for more than four centuries. During the celebration held at Vientiane’s iconic stupa, several activities are spread throughout the esplanade area. The crowd peaks on the final day, with an alms-giving ceremony in the morn-ing, followed by a ritual hockey game (tee khee) between government officials and villagers, and a candle light procession in the evening.

The 10th China-ASEAN Expo and China-ASEAN Trade and Investment Summit, held in Nanning in China’s Guangxi Province from 3-6 September 2013, addressed the expanding trade between the Mainland and Southeast Asia, while emphasising that the event has played a significant role in boosting the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area under the framework of their strategic partnership.

Savy Ningning, Deputy Secretary of the China-ASEAN Trade Minister Council for China, said “The value of trade between China and ASEAN reached a historic high in 2012, topping USD400 billion for the first time. This statistic shows that the increase in trade value has dramatically climbed from USD54.77 billion in 2002 to USD362.80 billion in 2011.” China is currently ASEAN’s top trade partner, and ASEAN just overtook Japan to become China’s third most important trade partner.

Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong stated that Laos currently has a new policy to promote foreign investment to attract more business to the country. He said Laos welcomes investors from China and fellow ASEAN member countries, who might be interested in doing business or carrying out feasibility studies. Statistics show China continually ranks in the top three countries investing in Laos.

Laos has also determined priority industries and sectors for foreign investments such as infrastructure development, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, energy, and mining.

New thai-Lao Bridge Boost-ing Bokeo’s EconomyThe soon-to-open fourth Thai-Lao Bridge linking Houay Xai with Chiang Rai, Thailand’s Xiengkhong Town is already boosting Bokeo Province’s economy, as investors race to reserve land near the crossing, with an eye on increased trade and good investment returns.

Bridge Construction Manager Vanthong Boudtavong said, “Land reservations near the international border and close to bridge and road have been growing dramatically as busi-nesses increasingly come to book land plots for various purposes, ranging from trading to providing hospitality services such as restau-rants, hotels, and guesthouses to shops. They are claiming plots on both sides of the road in an area covering almost 26 hectares.”

He added, “The bridge will considerably improve transportation within Laos’ northern region and help promote trade, investment, and communication, which will result in high-er revenues for the people in this province, particularly those in the agricultural sector.”

When it is officially open, the fourth friend-ship bridge crossing the Mekong will boost economic growth in northern Laos, particu-larly in Bokeo Province, as it will link Thailand to China via the new 180-km Lao Route 3. In addition, the bridge will provide Laos with better seaport access, which could attract more foreign investment to the country and region.

The bridge construction project is an evenly split joint venture between the governments of Thailand and Laos. The total cost, includ-ing a six-month contract extension, is USD 49.5 million, and China’s External Assistance Department, Ministry of Commerce granted the funds for Laos’ 50 per cent stake.

The 14.7-metre-long bridge is taking 36 months to build. A pair of 3.5-metre wide roadways and a 1.25 metre wide walkway run over the border, while the border road on both sides measure 2 metres in length.

Reels will Roll Again in Luang Prabang

Film may not be the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Laos, but interest in the Luang Prabang Film Festival has been steadily growing since it began four years ago. Movie-goers and industry professionals from all over Southeast Asia look forward to this event as it presents an outstanding collection of curated films from all 10 ASEAN countries. With back-to-back screenings of the some of the region’s best films produced in the past five years, it is no wonder LPFF has got people’s attention.

“Great programming is the key,” says Gabriel Kuperman, LPFF’s founder and director. “A film festival is nothing if it isn’t showing incredible films.”

A big part of LPFF’s mission is to help build interest and capacity in the Southeast Asian film industry, as well as teach and inspire local and regional filmmakers, particularly here in Laos. “You do that by bringing together the best of the best, creating a space for regional filmmakers to meet and collaborate,” Kuperman says.

The fact that Luang Prabang has no working cinemas didn’t stop him. Screens are rigged on garden lawns, within the walls of a five-star hotel, and at the Handicraft Market, right in the center of town, where stalls are replaced with approximately 1000 blue plastic chairs to create a massive open-air theater. As one attendee last year noted, “it’s like the whole town is transformed into a cinema.”

This year’s event starts on December 7th and runs until the 11th. In addition to the film screenings, there are a series of panel dis-cussions, multiple exhibitions, and Q&As with the filmmakers.

1. Welcome to LaosDyed-in-the-wool backpackers ride the green border-busses from the Friendship Bridge to Vientiane’s central bus station, and deserve a budget Beer Laos after a long trip through Thailand. Welcome to Laos and the Phiou Restaurant, tucked in the terminal’s corner next to the toilets. Framed jigsaw puzzles hang from the fading azure-trimmed white walls, blending well with the blue plastic Pepsi banners draped by classic yellow Beer Lao tablecloths on the 10 wooden tables. From plastic stools, fresh arrivals can ease into Laos’ languid pace while watching hawkers flog goods through coach win-dows amid a symphony of beeping buses. And the bill…10,000 kip.

2. Payday CelebreJust cash your pay cheque or exchange money at the BCEL bank on Rue Pangkham? Celebrate with a Beer Lao at the spacious, 12-table restaurant with no name across the street. It’s easy to spot; stickers advertising cars and mobile phone services straddle the open front under engraved wooden trim. Inside, patrons and staff fixate on the TV, but the young man, who does everything from cook to floor sweeping, serves you in a second. Dormant bird nests and bee hives dangle from the ceiling, and the head and fur coat of some mammal highlight the wall decor. Pay no attention to the clock stuck at 11.00. Just enjoy that cool 10,000 kip Beer Lao.

3. Grandma’s HouseNothing beats a Beer Lao at grandma’s sandwich shop on Samsenthai Road, just around the corner from Nam Phu and

across from M Point minimart. It’s like having a brew at home, as grandma only has one metal table on the sidewalk. She serves up a slate of baguettes to soak up a lunchtime beer from the stand in front of her open-front home, but having a lone lager as the hordes pass by presents a great sideshow just steps away from the iconic giant wine shop wooden barrel. And best of all, grandma prices her Beer Lao at 10,000 kip.

4. Pre-dinner PouringFor a pre-dinner Beer Lao or two or three, head to the corner of Pangkham and Phainam Roads next to the venerable Day Inn. The 4 Junctions Beer Vitsara opens at around 17.00 and packs the place with Lao men after work. With local music piping from an aging stage speaker, young girls donning tight green Beer Lao skirts serve up bottle after bottle, as the owner cooks up Lao snacks. Plants encircle the open air bar decked out in Beer Lao paraphernalia, with an antique wagon leaning in the corner. The bathroom features a flushing urinal, but women face a challenge when unleashing their 10,000 kip Beer Lao.

5. Treating VIPsWhen asked to meet in front of the upscale Settha Palace to join a visiting tourism pro-fessor from the University of Macau for a Beer Lao, I jumped at the chance. Little did I know we were heading across Pangkham Road to the Khamphew Ngua Phao. Red Chinese lanterns beckon the thirsty to the restaurant’s spacious interior, with generic speakers humming Lao music. “The vinyl yellow Beer Lao table cloths mixed with the fading beige walls make for a Picasso-like cavalcade of colours,” the professor said. “I also liked the cobwebs intertwined with the fan, which adds to the ambience.” As we left, he concluded, “Heh, for 10,000 kip a pop, that was great.”

Pimentón steakhouse It is stark, modern and already fully fledged since Franco-Lao Chef Serge and his wife Regina from Spain opened Pimentón in July 2013, and the couple continues paying relentless attention to the details to fuel their ongoing creative process to make the open-fire steakhouse a great new dining option in Vientiane.

The enticing menu offers an unmatched choice of dishes, ranging from grilled classics - asado Argentino, grilled chicken, charolais rib eye steak, beef aiguillette, and beef tenderloin from the Franco Thai Farm - to rather mysterious dishes (go for the gazpachuelo) exclusively available at Pimentón. You will also find classic Spanish tapas, a good selection of cheeses and charcuterie such as jamon Serrano, and a variety of chorizos or salchichon. You’ll also be mesmerised when it comes to selecting the perfect wine for your meal, with a great variety of vintages from Italy, France and, of course, Spain.

As part of the restaurant’s ongoing creative process are regular modifications to the menu. And, its distinctive lighting is a real atmosphere maker, with industrial style steel pipes to brighten up your meal. Earthenware designed by Chef Serge and Santhip-one Factory is used for water jars and tapas plates. It definitely feels great to land in an eatery full of taste and surprises.

Bamboo HouseBamboo House, which opened its doors earlier in 2013, aims to recreate the genuine, modern feel of a South Korean restaurant, and it has paid attention to every little detail to achieve this goal. The service staff present patrons with small wet tissues before serving meals. The latest in ventilated fire grills and wine buckets highlight each table. The restaurant imports its fish as well as its meats and poultry - sirloin, rib eye, boneless short ribs and duck - from Korea to ensure the kitchen is capable of creating authentic traditional dishes. Selections are finely cut with scissors for an authentic Korean barbecue experience. The Bamboo House also offers a seafood grill with shrimp, crab, and shellfish along with the only marinated crab in Vientiane.

Ray’s GrilleRays Grille recently moved its location to a charming colonial house on Si-hom Road in the centre of Vientiane. Ray’s delicious beef or chicken Philly cheese steak baguettes are still available as is a new menu item, the best imported beef burgers in Southeast Asia, according to Trip Advisor. No matter how you down Ray’s juicy burgers, by hand or fork, they are truly addicting. The slate in front of the restaurant contains a well rounded selection of American/Tex-Mex favourites topped by the restaurant’s most popular dish, steak quesadillas filled with thinly sliced imported rib-eye steak onions, cheese, and salsa. Both the Philly cheese steaks and quesadillas are also available with chicken or pork. Don’t miss the large Cobb salad topped with artichoke hearts, chicken, bacon, egg, and feta cheese coated with Ray’s mouth watering blue cheese dressing. And for vegetarians, Ray’s offers a tasty selection of homemade falafel.

ibis Vientiane Nam PhuPierre Molinari stepped out of Accor Hotel’s box with the ibis Vientiane Nam Phu. Besides bringing an international brand, owner Mr Molinari wanted something modern and trendy at his 64-room hotel, and with a Paris designer, he hit the mark.

Located within steps of the Nam Phu Fountain, the staff’s greet-ing smiles await at the front door, before you enter an expansive lobby that merges with the restaurant. Red shaded lamps hover above, with a inviting bar serving spirits and gourmet coffee.

The restaurant’s open kitchen bookends the room, where pasta fans enter heaven. The eatery presents a choice of pasta and sauces, some with a Lao fusion slant, and diners select their combination. Mr Molinari stressed the importance of hygiene and international service quality.

As with most ibis hotels, the rooms offer comfortable sleep-ing quarters with necessary amenities. “The rooms are simple but reasonable,” Mr Mr Molinari said. “You don’t need to pay for things you don’t need.”

Mandala Boutique Hotel“Surprised” popped into my mind when wan-dering into a Vientiane neighbourhood at Vat Si Muang just outside the main tourism hub. A small sign announced, “Mandala”, and a driveway leading to a large home that belonged in 1960s California.

The hotel’s General Manager Philipp Bode met me at the 50-year-old house’s foyer, having arrived this year to refurbish the residence to maintain its ‘60s feel. “What we want to create is a feeling of home…as we are small and more relaxed.”

He retained most of the original furnishings, floors, and structure, while converting other structures into rooms. The hotel currently offers 23 “green” four-star rooms in its retro accommo-dation with modern amenities, and some rooms offering temple views.

“This is a work in progress”, Mr Bode said, and he intends to create three family rooms, transform the front yard into a garden lounge, and focus on details. Sliding glass doors encase the restaurant serving Lao and international dishes. He added, “We’ll have theme nights, so watch for that.”

Shangri LaoShangri Lao offers a luxury tent camp alongside Elephant Village to deliver an amazing experience. Located 12 km from Luang Prabang Town on the Khan River, Shangri Lao features themed tents based on French Dr Neis’ 1882-83 expedition in the area. You can stay in “Inspira-tion”, “Water Healing”, “Rejuvena-tion” and similarly named tents.

Lanith Luang PrabangImagine a hospitality complex with a cause that centres on a bar and restaurant offering international service quality. Due to officially open in November, Lanith Luang Prabang (LLP) is already doing just that in a quiet Nam Don Riverside neighbourhood at the Kuang Si Waterfalls Bridge just 3.5 km from town in Ban Khoi.

LLP offers four guestrooms with minimalistic décor, snug beds, and sizeable balconies with views of the garden pond and Nam Dong River village. The meeting room can accommodate up to 36 delegates, and offers a choice of set menus for coffee breaks and meals.

But, LLP’s spacious 60-seat Balcony Bar & Restaurant headlines the show, starring Michelin star-rated Chef Pit Wanderscheid presenting “The Mekong Spirit” evolving menu, highlighting basic French cuisine using Luang Prabang products. The outlet, decked out in local wood furnishings and encircled by a wide terrace, offers free transport to and from town.

“This is a work in progress,” explained owner Markus Peschke, who said the number of tents will reach seven in 2013. Handcrafted 19th century-style furniture dons each of the spacious bamboo-and-canvas tents with hardwood floors. An attached bathroom offers either an era tub or whirlpool. Guests can also choose to stay in the eight-room lodge.

The facilities add a modern touch. Suspension bridges weave through the property to the reception area serving Twinnings Tea and gourmet coffee, and on to an infinity pool and bar. For dining, the camp restaurant’s menu presents a la carte Lao and Western dishes. Add in elephant tours following Dr P. Neis exploits for the perfect stay.

LLP. a Luxembourg initiative, presents a model for public-private sector partnerships that pays off as proven in Lanith’s “Passport to Success” skills training programme, which generates revenue to sustain the project.

My body shook from the effort; all the tension numbed my mind, as I reached the top of 250-metre Nam Tham waterfall we had just assaulted in a daring adven-ture feat. By the time I arrived, some team members had already changed to dry clothes and were playing card games on the wooden deck overlooking the majes-tic limestone karst mountains below the dark clouds.

Soaked to my bones and baffled by the bizarre experience, I asked Green Discov-ery Laos Founder and Program Director Inthy Deuansavan, who had invited me on this survey trip, “So, when are you officially opening this climbing tour?”

“In September,” he said. “However, there won’t be as much water as now.” Climbing up a gushing waterfall over a protected route on a via ferrata, which means “iron road”, is not very common, and even when the water is low, the experience will be far from boring.

The via ferrata technique has been used in the Alps since the 19th century, hence the Italian name. Basically, a steel cable periodically fixed to rocks runs along the route to secure the climbers, who use a via ferrata kit - mainly a harness and carabiners (clamps) - to secure themselves to the cable and limit any slip. Further, Green Discovery has installed iron pegs all the way up the waterfall as an additional climbing aid.

The trip also entails abseiling from the top of the waterfall on the way back down in a controlled descent on the rock face using a rope. You also walk on scenic suspended bridges from one platform to another, and zip line on seven cables, which allows Vang Vieng Challengers to catch their breath and rest their sore muscles, though it’s a bit frightening being perched high-up above the canopy and roaring waterfall.

Green Discovery ranks the company’s tours into four categories to match their levels of difficulty: Discovery, Experi-ence, Adventure, and Challenge. Among the almost 200 programmes developed by Laos’ leading adventure ecotourism company, only three qualify for the heavy-duty Challenge listing, and this new Vang Vieng experience, appropriately named “The Vang Vieng Challenge”, happens to be one of the chosen few. Needless to say, you’re going to get an adrenaline rush, and though you won’t need to master any specific skills beforehand, make sure you feel fit enough for the strenuous climb.

INSIDE LAOSINSIDE LAOS

The trek kicks off after a 15-minute sawng thaew drive from Vang Vieng. The first rope bridge hanging above the fast running water greets visitors, and presents an invitation to adventure like leaping into Alice’s looking glass. However, before heading off to the awaiting rumbling rivers and rocks, the Green Discovery guides gear you up with a via ferrata kit: harness, carabiner, and helmet.

The first two hours of trekking are bliss, with an explosion of colours along the line of red-and-yellow helmeted trekkers hiking through the verdant paddy fields set in a mist surrounded by shredding karsts, typical of the Vang Vieng landscape.

There were many rivers to cross before reaching the bottom of the challenging waterfall, where the adventure really begins...two hours of intense climbing. Where the river is wide, rope bridges straddle the hurdle, and it’s easy to become dizzy, as you focus on your feet, while the murky water runs fast right below. And where no bridges have been built, forming a human chain solves the problem. But when you are up against the waterfall wall, you’re quite alone. It’s just you, your carabiners, and the rocks.

But, you have to do it, because there’s no turning back, as you cannot cross the many rivers alone, and it would be a pity to give up and decide to sleep against the rocks, when you can enjoy such a beautiful sunset from the top.

As with any adventure trip worthy of that name, the feeling of great accomplish-ment rewards the effort after making it to the summit, where snacks stall your appetite until the Green Discovery staff complete the preparation of a well-earned dinner of grilled fish, meat, mixed vegetable, roasted eggplant with tomato sauce, and sticky rice.

As night falls, the clatter of pots in the improvised kitchen, people chit-chatting and playing cards nearby, and other members of the team starting to organize their things before night fall adds to the atmosphere of this classic, successful Green Discovery adven-ture tour, The Vang Vieng Challenge.

“We’ve changed plans,” Somsavath said after greeting me at Luang Namtha’s airport.

I’ve known Somsavath - a Luang Namtha native and owner of Phou Iu Travel and Eco-Tours, Luang Namtha’s top adventure specialist

- for a few years, and his modifications always added more bang for your buck. “Where are you taking me?”

As per the original plan, we would head to Nalae Town in the province’s southeast for the night. A boat ride down the Nam Tha

River to Ban Khone Kham still stood second. Overland from Nalae to Vieng Phouka remained third, “But then…”

“But then…” often leads to memorable adventures. Rather than take the paved road back to Luang Namtha Town and on to Sing District, we’d forge

through unknown conditions to Long District. From here, we’d tackle a rarely travelled road to the Xieng Kaeng Region, and a view of the Mekong and Myan-

mar’s mountains, before continuing to Sing.

It took Somsavath 2.5 hours to hustle the 4WD pickup over the 75-km twisty, bumpy dirt road that followed the Nam Tha to Nalae Town, and we expected conditions to get worse.

However, thoughts of our impending rollercoaster ride vanished the next morning at the boat landing. We joined boatmen huddled around a fire, cooking fish, a staple for folks living along the Nam Tha, and everyone fishes. Throughout our upcoming cruise, we watched young men paddle to bamboo traps set across rapids, and women, boys, and girls casting nets from the banks.

The long, narrow, motorized vessel powered downstream, while the misty morning air shrouded some of the hills rising right from the shorelines. The river lazily snaked through the tree-lined countryside, though occasional light rapids snapped the front oar-man into action. He pointed and signalled and buried his stick in the tumult until we safely passed.

Then he’d sit like the rest of us, taking in a silent documentary starring vegetable gar-dens, scattered villages, women washing clothes, old forests, streams feeding the river, flocks of ducks and lone birds, and plenty of boats.

The river show ended 90 minutes later at Ban Khone Kham, which is gaining popularity as a halfway overnight stop on the Nam Tha cruise from Luang Namtha Town to Houei Xay on the Mekong.

A small party welcomed us, before Mr Boraphan, the village’s English-speaking guide, led us around the 64-house Tai Lue community. The first stop – Ban Khone Kham’s recently refurbished riverside lodge – stood on posts over-looking a set of rapids next to an island of shrubs.

Behind the lodge, the 100-year-old vil-lage’s stilted houses climb a hill, and ev-erywhere we went, two or three women would be weaving cotton sins (tradi-tional skirts) at looms under a house.

The village also distils lao khao rice alcohol, which I soon discov-ered. A group met us at the village chief’s house, bottle in hand. One man said, “A little for a greeting, and more to relax.” The second choice won.

On the cruise back to Nalae, we stopped at Ban Phou Khang, interrupted a few school classrooms, and visited Si Boun Huang Temple, home of the village’s annual Rocket Festival.

The 76-km drive to Vieng Phouka started deceptively smooth. We quickly passed the Khmu villages of Ban Phou Tin and Ban Long Moon, and peeked at the green-coated mountains we’d cross.

The dirt road got bumpier, as it traversed the monoliths. We hit 900 metres above sea level at Ban Tha Luang, the last village in Nalae, and topped out at 1,164 meters at Ban Phou Let, a trek-king and homestay destination. Then, 2.5 hours later, we pulled into Vieng Phouka Town.

After dinner, I dove into bed, while Somsavath and Tone, who was mapping our Luang Namtha lap, scoured the town to ask if the road went all 84 km to Long Town. “Half said ‘Yes,’ and half said, ‘No,’” Somsavath announced the next morning. We decided to go for it…

…and immediately got lost. The road degraded into a rut-filled trail. We paused at a precarious log bridge, shrugged our shoul-ders, and continued for 30 minutes before meeting a young hunter. He informed us we were on a 50-km cul de sac.

We tried again, and though the road often resembled a cart path, we were passing known villages: Ban Nam Mai and its cave treks, Ban Houei Hok’s Akha homestays, and Ban Tok Lat’s steep climb to Phou Phan Ha Waterfalls.

A broken tree blocked the road about halfway to Long, but Tone and I managed to pull it back enough for Somsavath to pass. We climbed to 1,282 metres, forded the Nam Long River, paused for a panorama of the Nam Ha National Protected Area’s mountain peaks, and continued to Ban Nam Bo and its path to the Nam Long Waterfall some 16 km outside Long Town.

The ordeal took nearly five hours, so we reset a tight Xieng Kaeng target, about 70 km away, for sunset, and left Long at 15:00. The more conventional Route 17B to Sing Town was only 45 km long, but for us, it was “Xieng Kaeng or Bust”.

The trail crossed rivers and passed pointed peaks jutting higher and higher. We hit a series of switchbacks, and the road ruts grew deeper. Then, the GPS device’s memory overflowed. Somsavath stopped, calmly plugged the gadget into his com-puter, went through some IT ritual, and on we went.

We reached Ban Ja Mai, and just one more mountain to round as the sun closed in on the somewhat hazy horizon. We made it to the 1,800-meter-high Xieng Kaeng viewpoint in time, but the mist presented an opaque view of Myanmar’s mountains and a vague Mekong view. Bor pen nyang (never mind), we agreed, and continued on the 36-km downhill run to Sing Town, stopping once, as an Akha village hailed us into a party for a beer.

The Long-Xieng Kaeng-Sing leg took five hours, making the 40-km drive to Luang Namtha Town to complete the circuit a well-earned walk in the park.

Sizzling SingaporeAward winning travel writer Heidi Fuller-love, New York Travel Writers Society Travel Radio Personality of the Year 2013, just visited Singapore and reports to Champa Holidays magazine on what’s new and hot.

ly'dt3xGfyocfocsj'7;k,maoltw\

With some of Asia’s most stylish bars and restaurants, shopping streets, and strik-ing architecture, Singapore is a fascinating melting pot of cultures and a bubbling hotbed of new events.

From river safaris to designer shopping, celebrity-studded haunts, and exclusive slee-peries, follow Champa Holidays on the latest tour of the hippest, hottest new things to do in one of Asia’s coolest cities.

Shop till You Drop Not long ago, Haji was just another tiny lane in Singapore’s Kampong Glam District. Once renowned as the best place to buy Indonesian textiles and Muslim prayer carpets, some of the city’s foremost designers have set up shop here over the past few years. Today, shoppers view Haji as Singapore’s hippest fashion street on par with Paris’ chic Le Marais district.

Dozens of boutiques line this winding street. If you’re seeking tailored menswear, try Know It Nothing, a classy finery shop in a newly renovated industrial space, where suits hang side-by-side with the store’s own art collection. For rock star clothing, check out The Blog Shop, a trendy store where celebrities like Gwen Stefani buy their frocks and feathers when they’re in town.

Page 52: Champa Holidays

Then, head next door to Pluck and spend a fortune on stunning interior design ware, before enjoying some comfort food in the store’s own ice cream parlour. And if you need to unwind after your spree, head for “The Sanctum”, a chic chill out space, where you can join a yoga class or enjoy a relaxing shiatsu massage.

Set Out on a Safari The first attraction of its kind in Asia, River Safari presents a thrilling new water theme park based on 10 of the world’s most striking freshwater habitats. You can head out in a boat to discover attractions ranging from Mekong freshwater stingrays and fear-some Chinese alligators, to Kai Kai and Jai Jai, the giant panda pair gifted by China to mark 20 years of friendly Singaporean relations. River Safari also offers a range of white water rafting rides and the “Amazon Slow Boat”, which takes you to observe fauna and flora found along the Amazon.

Stay on Your Own IslandIf you’ve always fancied having your own island, but don’t like roughing it like Robinson Crusoe, head for Pulau Joyo. A short boat hop from Singapore lands you at Riau Archipelago’s brand new driftwood-decorated dream haven, and delivers a sophisticated melange of rustic chic and local charm. Stay in a tree house or driftwood cabin, drink cocktails on the white sandy beach at sunset, and watch pink dolphins gambol in the sea from your sunny seat.

Dine like a GourmandFamous for its gourmet dining scene, Singapore has attracted some of the globe’s top chefs, who have set up local restaurants.

Opened just a year ago, &MADE is the brainchild of Bruno Menard, the first three-star Michelin chef to open a restaurant in Singapore. Dishing up a fine-dining spin on burgers and fast food, this brightly lit, black-and-white tiled eatery serves refreshing liquid salads, gourmet burgers (try the spicy lamb corian-der and curried raisin version), as well as a range of sapid desserts.

If you’re seeking a more upmarket dining experi-ence, head for the newly opened Ikyu, an achingly hip restaurant with concrete floors and fitting metal fixtures, where chef Takuma Seki serves foie gras with pink pepper and other original dishes.

Celebrity chef Jason Atherton’s newly opened Esquina presents another must-try. An upmarket tapas bar with only a dozen or so seats drawn up to a scrubbed steel food counter, they serve bite-sized specialities including delicious barbecued mackerel snacks and titbits of roast lamb served with black olive polenta.

This watering hole, hidden behind a bland door along North Canal Road, serves a range of intriguing cocktails includ-ing the flavour-packed Kaya Toast made with Earl Grey Tea, dark rum, lemon juice, honey and Kaya.

Award-winning mixologist, Joel Fraser, has dealt another hot newcomer on the cool drink scene at The Cufflink Club. This dimly lit drinking space with black tables and leather bar seats has a range of speciality cocktails includ-ing Walking Dead made with 13 different rums.

Club with the StarsSingapore seethes with hip-and-happening nightclubs, but the venue that’s currently attracting the city’s beauti-ful people is Pangaea, Singapore’s version of this super sophisticated chain of night lounges, which are already famous in New York, London, and Miami. Housed in de-signer Moshe Safdie’s stunning Crystal Pavilion, Pangaea attracts stars ranging from Kate Moss to Madonna, who hang out when they are in town. With individual granite dance tables and glamorous hostesses who wait on you hand and foot, critics are already hailing Singapore’s Pan-gaea as one of the world’s most luxurious nightspots.

Slumber in StylePlenty of options exists for those seeking to sleep in style in Singapore, but one of the latest modish hotel’s on the scene is Starwood’s new W. Opened in October 2012, this sophisticated Starwood Sentosa Cove accommodation opens the door to rainforest-themed deco, a heated out-door pool with underwater speakers, mooring for yachts, and complimentary guest cabanas. Many consider its Skirt restaurant as the best place in town for a sumptuous steak dish.

For another chic alternative, try the recently refurbished Four Seasons. Following Hirsch Bedner’s complete makeover in July 2013, this Orchard Road hotel offers two swimming pools, four tennis courts, spacious rooms with panoramic views, marble clad bathrooms…and even a bubble bath menu.

Finally for a quirky sleep-themed option, check out the shiny new POD. This boutique capsule hotel along Haji Lane presents personalised concierge services, compli-mentary laundry service, a hot buffet breakfast and 83 bite-sized rooms with fold-down tables for laptop use.

ART

Now, tourists do not need to journey to Sekong, Salavan, and Champasak Provinces to learn about the Katu, as Dr. Linda S. McIntosh has created an extraordinary exhibition, “Carving a Community: The Katu People” at the easier to access Luang Prabang’s Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre.

Opened in September 2013, the presentation displays Katu handicrafts backed by woodcarvers demonstrating their techniques used to decorate Katu communal houses. Visitors will also learn about the importance of exchanging gifts in Katu society and how trading items plays an important role in wed-dings and other rites.

Dr. McIntosh, curator of the exhibit and advisor to the centre, added that special events related to the exhibit are planned through September 2014.

She goes on to explain the history, culture, and lifestyle of the Katu, and with seven Lao government tourism projects under her belt, her insight into this ethnic minority, with only some 30,000 residents in Laos, captivates any audience.

“While in southern Laos, travellers often visit the Bolaven Plateau for a taste a nature and fresh coffee,” she said, adding that if tourists head east, they’ll reach the country’s youngest province, Sekong, established in 1984 and home to most of Laos’ Katu, though they have settlements in Champasak, Salavan, and Attapeu Provinces.

Visitors to Sekong can find original Katu settlements in Kaluem District located in the mountainous Lao-Vietnamese frontier. However, beginning in the mid-1970s, some Katu villages reset-tled in more accessible areas in Sekong on the eastern Bolaven Plateau in Thateng District.

One of the first villages to relocate, Ban Huaysay, sits just a couple of kilometres west of Thateng Town, and visitors are welcome to watch women weave Katu-style cloth on unique foot-braced, body tension looms. They also create beaded textiles, which to them was once worth a buffalo or imported jar, according to Dr. McIntosh. Today, a beaded skirt costs 1 million kip or more.

What’s New with the KatuDr. Linda S. McIntosh PhD takes Champa Holidays magazine inside Luang Prabang’s Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre to discover its latest exhibit, woodcarvings, and fascinating way of life.

Weavers happily sell the ethnic garb to tourists during a visit, during which they can also observe everyday activities, such as grinding cassava and shelling peanuts.

Less than 20 km east of Thateng town, two villages, Chunla Pai and Kandone Mai, house community meeting halls, considered the heart of Katu society, where they hold important festivals, celebrations such as weddings, and meetings.

Like most Lao ethnic groups, Katu architecture stands out in its own way. Houses on stilts are capped with thatched, tortoise shell-shaped roofs, and elaborate woodcarvings adorn the house pillars, crossbeams, and walls. The Katu believe the village guardian spirit resides in the central pillar of the community hall. Human figures, plants, and animals, especially pythons also decorate a communal house

According to Dr. McIntosh, the Katu once compared their lives to that of a python, which go for long periods without food. After feeding, a python is satiated, which is how the Katu feel after a feast. Years ago, when living in the mountains without much land for growing rice, people relied on cassava for subsistence. Further, the Katu don’t often hold community-wide feasts, so they are rarely sated with sacrificial meat.

Kandone Mai villagers hold the Katu’s most important ritual, a buffalo sacrifice festival, on 5 March, to mark the date the village was established. The date varies in other villages, but is general-ly held in March, Dr. McIntosh said, adding this festival presents the opportunity to witness villagers in full traditional costume.

Katu textiles, especially skirts, contain complex designs of aircraft, buffalo, and other animals. The loincloth worn by men for special occasions requires a process that takes a year to complete. Married women weave loincloths for their husbands and sons.

Katu men make intricate baskets and traps from different types of bamboo and rattan foraged from the forest, and they vary in form and size, depending on their use. Loosely woven baskets are intended to carry wood, bamboo, or corn while they use densely woven vessels to transport rice. Men also use a basket with three compartments, the precursor to today’s backpack. They use the sections to hold tools, tobacco, rice, as well as col-lected forest items.

If you cannot make the journey to Sekong, you can find the next best thing at the “Carving a Community: The Katu People” exhibit at Luang Prabang’ s Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre. It’s a stop that culture vultures cannot miss.

Project inside Laos Project Green Care

Green Care resumes activity on dry grounds !

With occasional downpours falling from the skies during previ-ous months, Green Care Fund’s team took a few months to seek new donors and networking opportunities in the hopes of gain-ing assistance in resuming their youth camping tours in the wild this October for the third straight year.

These trips allow youngsters, mostly from Vientiane Capital, to enjoy nature while learning about the forest ecosystem and its relevance to their own urban environment. The programme aims to bring urban Lao youth into the forest, and convey an appreciation for the beauty and amazing complexity of its ecosystem.

Groups of about 38 teens, usually from Vientiane, leave early on Saturday mornings for the short drive from the capital to Tad Leuk in the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area. Upon arrival, they set up tents, before receiving interesting lectures from Dongdok University Faculty of Science’s Department of Biology. They then split into smaller trekking groups to venture into the forest.

When the night falls, the group gathers around a bonfire for din-ner, while the students present reports about what they learned and experienced during the day’s nature trail hike. The following day, the lecturers intersperse their lessons among games, songs, dances, and treks, before it is time to leave the forest and go home.

Freelance animators also join in every outing, and additional lecturers, guides, and the Phou Khao Khouay Parks Authority provide security staff. All tours are accompanied by a first aid expert, mostly assigned by the Lao Red Cross. Two teachers and two parents from the selected school are also invited to join in the jaunt. And the fund is making a name for itself on the international stage. In August 2013, a camera team working for the Japanese TV station, NHK, filmed a Green Care field trip for a documentary themed “Learning with fun”, which is Green Care Fund’s second motto. The fund’s main theme remains “Sowing the Seeds”, which aims to keep more young participants continuing along this path.

Green Discovery Laos created this private and independent non-profit fund in early 2011, and the initiative reflects the na-tion’s leading tour operator’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. Confronted almost daily with the complexity of problems concerning natural resource conservation, the tour company realised the necessity to proactively engage with other similarly-minded organisations working in Laos.

The Fund further wants to raise awareness about how the impacts of forest degradation and wildlife depletion directly and indirectly reach into the children’s own lives. Also on the agenda are the importance of waste disposal management and the problems related to mono-cultural farming.

The main donors making these tours possible include The Agro-biodiversity Initiative (TABI, Laos), Swiss-based KUONI/Asian Trails Laos, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIz) under its ProCEEd programme, and various private sector donors. Green Discovery remains an important sponsor, though Green Care operates independently from the adventure tour operator. The founders and management of Green Care can look back with pride, as they have now successfully organized 13 camp-ing weekend youth learning journeys to Tad Leuk for nearly 430 teenagers, and are preparing their 14th trip.

Lao Airlines’ Passenger Numbers surgeLao Airlines held a meeting, chaired by Managing Director Dr

Somphone Duangmala, with the carrier’s deputy managing di-

rectors, branch representatives, and key business partners at the

carrier’s headquarters on 22 August 2013, to review its business

performance with its partners and consult with them over im-

proving efficiency, discuss future plans, and announce a 19.2 per

cent increase in passenger numbers.

Seats filled in the national flagship carrier leaped from 531,653

passengers in 2011 to 658,252 in 2012, with much of the credit

going to regional route expansion made possible by the pur-

chase of new Airbus A320 aircraft. Lao Airlines also noted it will

add two Airbus A321s and two more ATR72-600s to its fleet in

2015.

During the meeting, Commercial Department Deputy Director

Mrs Phoutthasone Vannachack noted, “Lao Airlines was founded

in 1976, and currently has 14 aircraft, including four Airbus A320s,

four ATR72-500s, two ATR72-600s, and four MA60s.” She added,

“The national flag carrier mainly provides air passenger service as

well as charter, cargo, and different mail services.”

Mrs Vannachack went on to explain, “Lao Airlines is now operat-ing international routes to Bangkok and Chiang Mai in Thailand; Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam; Kunming, Jinghong, and Guangzhou in China; Singapore; and Seoul in South Korea. Domestic flights head from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, Pakse, Savannakhet, Xieng Khouang, Oudomxay, Houay Xai, and Luang Namtha. In addition, our company cooperates with other airlines.”

Participants were also informed that Lao Airlines will soon open daily flights from Vientiane to South Korea, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phnom Penh in Cambodia..

Lao Airlines further sought ways to improve the airline’s service performance and resolve its pricing issue at the meeting by dis-cussing and consulting with its business partners so they better understood the carrier’s policy.

Also at the event, Lao Airlines awarded its 10 business partners with the highest ticket sales: Indochina Travel, Asia Holiday, Trans-Express, Lee Go Air Service, Lao American Air Service, Lao Air Service, Joy Travel, Lao Passenger Service, Thai’s Express, and Oudomsin Travel Service.

Lao Airlines seeks staff to Meet GrowthThe Champa Holidays magazine team had the opportunity to interview Lao Airlines Director of Organisation and Personnel Department Sisavath Manivong, and discovered the carrier is recruiting staff to fill vacancies in several departments due to its ongoing growth.

According to Mr Sisavath, who also serves as a legal advisor for Lao Airlines, the carrier’s Organisation and Personnel Department is extremely important, and the starting point for all those entering into employment with the company. The de-partment’s main goal is to recruit qualified and knowledgeable staff, which must be ready for the expected tough competition when the ASEAN Economic Community agreement kicks off in 2015.

“Lao Airlines currently employs 862 staff, including 293 wom-en, 11 foreign pilots, and four foreign advisors. Of these, 551 are based in Vientiane, 254 work in provincial offices, and 42 operate Lao Airlines overseas representative offices.” Mr Sisavath said.

“Lao Airlines is constantly expanding its business by acquiring more new aircraft and revising tasks and duties inside different departments in response to future growth,” he explained. “To implement the development plan of Lao PDR’s national flag-ship carrier, and to provide sufficient and qualified human re-sources, Lao Airlines has recruited 50 new staff this year alone, and an additional are in the recruitment process, and will be assigned to work in the Commercial Department, Food Supply Department, and Champa Holiday Travel Company.”

Mr Sisavath added that among these new vacancies, there are three openings in ticketing service, one position open for graphic design and advertising, three in customer service, one for wrapping and aircraft loading service, and four for the air-lines’ travel company.

He went on to explain, “Those who wish to join our national flagship carrier team, and think that they are suitable candidates, can apply for any position, and of course the selection process will be carried out in a transparent and fair manner.”

Recent university graduates, who majored in any topic, are eligible to apply, and will be considered for appropriate positions based on their suitability, as there is no airline-related degree available from schools in Laos. The selection committee will recruit candidates, who most closely meet the various job profiles, for further training before they start to work.

Applicants will have to take an examination and then have a face-to-face interview. If one passes the first two tests, they will attend classes and then on-the-job training for three months before be-coming a full employee of the company.

Also during the selection process, Lao Airlines places more weight on those qualified to meet international standards. This is particu-larly important for staff, who will be working for the Commercial De-partment, as they should be computer literate, speak English, and have a good character to ensure the airline is effective and competi-tive in the changing economic climate.

Lao Airlines is 100 per cent state-owned company operating air pas-senger, cargo and mail services. The company also provides land services such as warehouse space, transport, tours, and hotels.

Lao Airlines is headquartered in Vientiane, and has domestic and foreign representative offices. Branches within the country are lo-cated in Xieng Khouang, Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Oudomx-ay, Houay Xai, Savannakhet and Champasak. Overseas offices op-erate in, Bangkok, Guangzhou, Kunming, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Siem Reap, and Singapore. The company is currently preparing to add branch offices in Japan and Myanmar.

DOS & DON’TS

IN LAOSWELCOME TO LAOS! WE HOPE YOUR VISIT IS ENJOYABLE AND REQUEST THAT YOU RESPECT THE LAO LAW, CUL-TURE AND CUSTOMS.PLEASE READ ON TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE DO’S AND DON’TS FOR CULTURALLY SEN-SITIVE TRAVEL IN THE LAO PDR.

The Lao word for Hello is “Sabai dee”, usually said with a smile.Touching or showing affectionn in public will embarrass your hosts.

Lao people traditionally greet each other by pressing their palms together to ‘NOP’, although it is acceptable for men to shake hands.

Remember, your head is ‘high’, your feet ’low’, it is polite to gently crouch down when passing someone who is seated. Never, ever step over

someone in your path.

Kissing and hugging in public is impolite. Please be discrete.

created by insmai.com

In Laos your head is ‘High’, your feet ‘Low’. Using your feet for anything other than walking or playing sport is generally considered rude.

Lao people speak softly and avoid confrontation. Please do not shout or raise your voice. Before you take a photo of someone ask if it is ok.
