Where Portuguese explorers used to set out for their circumnavigations of the globe near the splendid tower of Belém, the historic icon of Lisbon built in the sixteenth century at the mouth of the Tagus, there stands today one of the world’s leading medical technology institutions. Over 400 physicians and scientists use the Champalimaud Centre as a centre for their medical research. So even today, people set out from here to explore the unknown. However, the search they now set out on from the water’s edge is for new methods of treatment. Designed by the prominent Indian architect Charles Correa, the building presents itself as an exemplary piece of innovation, both in terms of concept and architecture. It mirrors modernity in its purest expression and most beautiful form. Whilst the building itself creates an enclosed environment, the glazed facade towards the inner sunken garden provides a large amount of daylight to the interior. Views into the green gardens are an important part of the visitor's visual experience at the Champalimaud Centre. Patients can recover from their treatments outside and retreat into the concealed garden spaces. The lighting concept both follows Correa’s aesthetic ideas and deepens them at the same time. The sources of light are hidden wherever possible to convey discretion. Warm, soft light was specified in the publicly accessible spaces to create a comfortable and relaxing environment. Concealed light sources were used where possible to avoid glare and visual discomfort. In the examination rooms, large square recessed lights are mounted in the ceiling above the examination bed. These are equipped with both warm and cool white lamping and are fully dimmable. This offers a flexible solution providing a comfortable warm white environment and also remains practical for the doctors who may require cooler or brighter lighting for some examinations. 1/3
