The Motion Control System SIMOTION:Simply brings motion into your machines
State-of-the-art machines must continually fulfill even higher requirements. The challenges of higher
product quality, increased productivity, faster production rates, and reduced downtime must all be
achieved while minimizing life cycle costs. Additionally, widening ranges of tasks, increased axis counts and
shorter innovation cycles must adapt as quickly as the market requires while keeping machine price and
operating costs as low as possible. To achieve this you must replace mechanical components with electrical
components.
The solution to all of these challenges has been packaged into one motion control system – SIMOTION.
Your advantage: shorter, simplified automating from the harmonizing of individual modules and their
interfaces.
One system. From a single source.
In order to realize the most complex machines, SIMOTION supports the
machine development through the entire life cycle. This is achieved with
tools which simplify planning in the development phase as well as support
for commissioning with diagnostic functions. The objective: to achieve the
highest possible degree of simplicity. This shortens development and
engineering times, as well as the time to market for your machines.
Additionally, higher production rates and the highest product quality
are guaranteed.
Various degrees of freedom for more flexibility
The modular system design follows the trend towards modular machine concepts. Many different machine
versions can be implemented and scaled with just a few modules – assuming that every module has its
own intelligence. Therefore, SIMOTION covers all functionality and offers, with PROFIBUS and PROFINET,
the proper interfaces for communication between modules. This means you profit from our wide range
of powerful and innovative automation and drive components with this standard system platform. Further,
when implementing your application, you can select between several platforms and programming
languages. The advantage: high-performance machines with a higher degree of flexibility, shorter
construction and commissioning times with lower machine costs!
SIMOTION has an almost unlimited degree of flexibility due to the perfectly harmonized hardware andsoftware modules. This is one reason why the system is establishing itself across the widest range of sectors:
Packaging industryPlastics industryGlass industryWoodworking and metal finishingTextile industryPrinting industryConvertingGeneral machinery construction

SIMOTION – facilitates …
… powerful, flexible and innovativemachine design
… high clock cycles with a maximumproduct quality
… lower costs over the complete life cycle… faster time to market
Controls a complete machine with justone system.
Plays the game with just two fingers.

Motion control is becoming increasingly critical as mechanical designs allow more complex control with faster,
more precise motion. In order to keep control of the tasks as simple and flexible as possible, a new system
philosophy was selected for SIMOTION: motion control, merged with PLC and technology functions. This
concept allows complete machine control with just one system. This includes everything from axis control to
technology function support, such as pressure control for hydraulic axes.
Problems that occur from interfaces between individual components, often critical from a time perspective,
are completely eliminated. This results in programming and diagnostic cost reductions for the complete machine.
While you enjoy the same level of user friendliness as you would with a PLC system.
Three strategies for your success:Hardware, software and engineering that are perfectlyharmonized with one another
An integrated environment for seemless engineering
The SIMOTION system is comprised of three components:an engineering system, runtime software and hardwareplatforms. With SCOUT, SIMOTION not only offers an inte-grated, seamless engineering system, but it also providesall the tools required for programming, parameterization, testing and commissioning as well as diagnostics, all froma single source.
4
Runtime software – scalable and powerful
The runtime software has a modular structure whichcomprises of a PLC, according to IEC 61131-3, and additionalfunctions such as positioning, synchronous operation andcamming. But above all, these functions are available asstandard commands, which means that motion sequencescan be programmed just as simply and flexibly as with aPLC. Due to the free programming in conjunction with theexcellent motion control functions, SIMOTION is the idealautomation platform for all production machines requiringmotion control.
A matching platform for every machine type
In order to provide a high degree of freedom for yourparticular application, you can select from three hardwareplatforms. You decide which suits your machine the best– user applications and programs can be run on all threeplatforms. The various platforms can also be combinedwith one another. Once a SIMOTION program has beenwritten, it can run in the drive-based, PC-based, andcontroller-based platforms without any changes.

In order to fully utilize the system performance of SCOUT – the engineering system for SIMOTION –
we placed the greatest emphasis on user friendliness. Just one system is used to engineer the
motion control, PLC, technology functions and the drives. Configuring, programming, testing,
and commissioning – everything can be graphically handled from one workbench. With the
intelligent user navigation, a context-sensitive help function and the automatic consistency
check, SIMOTION significantly simplifies motion control programming – especially for entry
level personnel. Further, all of the tools associated with SCOUT are completely integrated to
make engineering even more efficient. SCOUT can be used as a stand-alone tool or in conjunction
with SIMATIC STEP 7.
One tool – all tasks:Engineering tasks are efficiently and quickly executed
SIZER – perfect component selection from the driveto the control
Not only can the drives, the motors and the appropriateSIMOTION controller be selected and sized with the easy-to-use software engineering tool SIZER, but also all of thesupplementary components required for the entire solution;right down to the appropriate cables. The software, designedto allow the user to generate a solution using intelligentfunctions and resources, simplifies creating the machinecontrol solution for even the most specific requirements.
SIZER navigates the user through the entire machine sizingprocess, step-by-step, taking into account both simple andcomplex load characteristics as well as travel profiles.Additionally, to help users follow this process, SIZER displaysthe entire workflow progress graphically. But this is not all– with the added functionality of the CAD Creator, youquickly have all of the motor-specific 2-D/3-D dimensiondata at your fingertips.

Simple to use:The programming
When it comes to the programming, SIMOTION provides you with an extremely high degree of
flexibility as the system can speak several “languages”: In addition to the ladder diagram (LAD),
function block diagram (FBD) and the high-level structured text language ST (structured text) according
to IEC 61131, motion sequences can also be programmed using Motion Control Chart (MCC).
Einfache und intuitive Programmierung mit MCC
Simple graphical programming – with MCC
The intuitive user prompting of MCC – Motion Control Chart– makes it easier to program even the most complex motionfunctions. The machine sequence is shown clearly andtransparently using a flow diagram. In addition to motioncontrol commands, there are also commands for I/O access, logic and arithmetic operations, sub-routine calls and evencommands to control the program flow.
Increased user friendliness with the cam editor –Cam Tool
Complex motion interrelationships can also be simply andgraphically programmed using the Cam Tool editor.
Everything included: the runtime system
In order to be able to handle the wide range of motiontasks for the widest range of machines as simply as possible,a special architecture was developed for the SIMOTIONruntime system. Basic functionality, such as the PLC logicis already integrated in each and every SIMOTION device. This functionality can be expanded as required using tech-nology packages and function libraries. Technology packagesprovide complete functionality of things like motion andtemperature control while the function libraries includestandard functions for tasks that are frequently required. You can also develop your own libraries of functions.
The combination of technology packages, function librariesand the runtime system result in the unique functionalityof SIMOTION: scalability, flexibility and expandability –from commissioning, through operation, up to service &maintenance.
Scalable:Providing various levels of functionality with software modules and technology packagesFrom simple control functions up to completemechatronic sequences
Flexible:Using the integrated, freely programmable PLC accordingto IEC 61131-3Using technology packages that can be freely instantiatedwith an extensive functional scopeBy being able to operate servo, vector, stepping and hydraulic drives

SIMOTION – permits …
… fast entry into programming through MCC… simple programming of PLC tasks using
LAD or FBD... fast commissioning and reduced downtime
through extensive diagnostic functions
One system – one data management: All of the information relating to the machine – such as
configuration data, programs, motion profiles, HMI screens, and drive data – are saved in one
project. Once a drive is commissioned, all the required data can be simply called up from the
central project management.
Simply integrated:Central management with all the tools
Simply harmonized: configuring the axes
Axis handling is also significantly easier than with conven-tional systems as a result of wizards which navigate theuser through the process. Intelligent axis objects set up inthe software to include all relevant information – such asthe name, the connected drive, encoder type with resolution,closed-loop position control parameters and even themechanical axis system data – can be saved and visualized.Axis properties and information can be immediately retrievedand used in a user program for any axis type.
Everything at a glance with the axis control panel
Also integrated into SCOUT is an axis control panel used tosimplify commissioning. Operations including traversing, testing, optimizing, etc. are easily done in the control panel.
Simple commissioning: testing and diagnostics
SCOUT offers testing and diagnostic functions – the sameas are used for PLCs – to commission the user program. Forexample, the states of blocks and variables are displayed, break points are set and variables traced.
In addition to these testing and diagnostic functions, thetrace function integrated into SCOUT, significantly simplifiescommissioning and troubleshooting.
This means that program variables, such as position actualvalue and the following error can be simultaneously recordedin millisecond intervals. Data that is recorded can also besaved and compared with new traced data.
Commissioning and machine optimization is also simplifiedwith features such as a function generator, FFT analysisand Bode plot diagram to display frequency characteristics.
Everything under control with IT Diag
SIMOTION IT Diag is especially suitable for first leveldiagnostics even once production has started.
Using only a standard web browser, SIMOTION IT Diagprovides machine and control information with its built-inweb server. It also provides services to update project filesas well as firmware. Custom HTML pages can be createdand stored in the controller to display diagnostic informationfor a particular system in the machine as well as for theentire machine itself.
SIMOTION IT Diag can be used to virtually eliminate time-consuming and costly service calls as well as to greatlyreduce machine downtime.

Machines with servo drives …
… are completely controlled using the SIMOTION C platformto handle all the input/output signals as well as to coordinatethe motion of the servo drives. This is easily done becauseall process signals from the controller I/O to the distributedI/O on PROFIBUS DP, are all maintained in the SIMOTIONcontroller.
The SIMOTION C platform can be supplemented with theSINAMICS S120 servo drives for optimal motion handling. Then, to complete your machine with user control andvisualization, a SIMATIC Operator Panel can be connectedto the controller via PROFIBUS DP or Ethernet.
For modular machines …
… SIMOTION can fully utilize its tremendous flexibility. This is because different machine segments can be con-trolled from one SIMOTION system – or even from multipleSIMOTION platforms. For instance, one segment with aservo drive and distributed I/O can be controlled from theindustrial PC SIMOTION P. Another segment and an auton-omous module, that also has several servo drives anddistributed I/O, can then be controlled from a SIMOTION Ccontroller. Solutions can also be implemented withSIMOTION D directly in the drive.
SIMOTION systems and servo drives are synchronized viaPROFIBUS DP or PROFINET with PROFIdrive, regardless ofthe chosen hardware platform.
Tight integration between the motion controller and theoperator interface can be achieved with SIMOTION P.The HMI application can be engineered easily withProTool/Pro as well as with other tools including OPC.

Machines with many axes …
… are a challenge for any motion control system. The reasonfor this is that each axis increases the load on the systemas well as the bus. SIMOTION tackles these challenges usinga distributed automation structure. The machine is sub-divided into various modules, each controlled with its ownSIMOTION system.
The individual systems are then connected to one anothervia PROFIBUS DP/PROFINET. This architecture allows therealization of machines with many axes, complex functionsand high performance requirements.
The drive-based version SIMOTION D is especially suited forthis type of application, thanks to its compact design andtight integration within an axis group.

SIMOTION and the SINAMICS S120 drive system –a perfect team
SINAMICS S120 is a modular system of drives for high-performance applications in industrial
machines. It has numerous components and functions that are harmonized and coordinated
with one another. This means that you can optimally adapt the drive for your particular
requirements. SINAMICS S120 offers high-performance single-axis drives and coordinated drives
(multi-axis applications) with vector or servo functionality. It addresses a power range extending
from 0.25 to 4500 kW for supply voltages of 1-ph. 230 V, 3-ph. 380–480 V and 3-ph. 660–690 V
(50/60 Hz), and is available in different housings.
SIMOTION P and SIMOTION C with SINAMICS S120
SIMOTION P and SIMOTION C handle the automation ofthe complete machine or of individual machine modules. The drive control is implemented in the SINAMICS S120,which communicates with SIMOTION via PROFIBUS DP orPROFINET.
SIMOTION D and SINAMICS S120
Motion control tasks are becoming increasingly more com-plex – and the requirements placed on precision and speedare increasing as well. SIMOTION D was created by integrat-ing SIMOTION into the high-performance SINAMICS S120drive system. This means that SIMOTION D provides theoptimum solution to the obstacle of having many coordi-nated axes with high cycle rates. This allows a distributedautomation structure where the machine is split up intovarious axis groups, each with its own SIMOTION system. An additional benefit is a compact machine design. Threedifferent performance versions are available in the form ofSIMOTION D425, D435 and D445. This makes it easy foryou to select the proper performance for your particularmachine. Motion control via PROFINET: If your machine needseven higher performance
PROFINET is the open, innovative Industrial Ethernetstandard that meets all requirements of the automationenvironment. PROFINET uses standard TCP/IP forparameterizing, configuring and diagnostics. UsingPROFINET, process data is transferred in real-time along thesame bus cable. PROFINET offers two real time properties:RT (real time) for factory automation and IRT (isochronousreal time) for motion control. SIMOTION integrates PROFINETwith RT and PROFINET with IRT for motion control withSINAMICS drives. This allows the realization of machineswith higher requirements, such as large axis counts, highdynamics from shorter clock cycles, and the ability totransmit large quantities of data. For PROFINET, even withreal-time communication, there are always sufficientreserves for IT communication.
Process, diagnostic and maintenance functions can all beexecuted simultaneously to reduce downtime and increaseproduction. Even existing PROFIBUS networks can be easilyintegrated into a PROFINET architecture to provide evenmore flexibility.
PROFIdrive – the well-proven drive interface
For PROFINET and PROFIBUS, the functional interfacebetween controls and drives is clearly defined by thePROFIdrive drive profile of the PROFIBUS User Organization(PNO). This benefits current PROFIBUS users who arechanging over to PROFINET because this standard interfacemeans you do not need to make any changes to your userprogram.
