i. Total Credit Hours Required for Graduation:       14.     Rationale for Change(s) –  if rationale  involves accreditation requirements, please  include specific references to that.

These changes have been proposed to streamline the Sociology major. The total hours required for the major will not change. Instead, the possibilities for meeting requirements in the "Premajor," "Major Core," and "Outside the Major" areas will be made more flexible. For example, the Premajor requirement will still total 6 hours, but students can take 6 hours all at the 100 level, or take 6 hours all at the 200 level, or take one 100 level course and one 200 level course. In the Major Core area, one of the required courses in Sociology (SOC 305) will be replaced with any 300+ level Sociology course. In the Outside the Major area, the same number of 15 hours (3 of which may be at the 200 level) will be required, but students can select from any non-Sociology course instead of a specified list. We believe these changes will increase efficiency for students entering the major and progressing through the major. The changes will not affect the Arts and Sciences college requirements or the Sociology or Criminology minor requirements. The changes may affect the Department of Community and Leadership Development; a letter of support from that department is attached.
