CHANGED BY JESUS

Has anyone ever said to you, “I can read your face like a book?” If so, you probably should refrain from playing cards. They generally mean that whatever is in your heart or on your mind is apparent on your face. The Apostle Paul wrote something similar to the Corinthians in 2 Corinthians 3: You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone, revealing that you are a letter of Christ, delivered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on stone tablets but on tablets of human hearts. learn from them. The Sunday morning Adult Bible class will also focus on “heroes” of the faith as we meet them in the Bible—not necessarily the same ones we will meet in the sermons. This class will be both Zoom (led by Pastor Jeff Shearier) and in-person (led by Jeff Weiblen). The class will start June 13. The series will end on Rally Day Sunday, September 12. We will invite members to share their faith stories during the worship service, wrapping up our focus on how Jesus changes us. So, if you think you would like to share your story, let me or Kerry Bauer or Eric Oswald know. There will be more information to come.

JUNE 2021, VOL. 11 NO. 6

We’ve completed our year at the preschool! It’s hard to believe that the year is already over. We will be holding an in-person graduation in the evening of June 2nd for our PreKers. Despite the pandemic everything has run smoothly for our school. And with restrictions lifting and people feeling more comfortable, we are looking good for enrollment next year. That being said, it looks like we will be in need of a preschool aide for next year. If you, or someone you know, would like a part-time job for next school year please let me know. Being a preschool aide is a great opportunity to show Jesus’s love to His children while preparing them for the rest of their lives, both spiritually and academically. Are you or do you know of someone who is looking for a 3-year-old preschool or 4-year-old PreKindergarten program? Did you know that word of mouth is the best way to advertise? Our preschool still has open spots available in both programs. To qualify students must be 3 or 4 by September 1st and potty trained. For more information or tour please contact Miss Mary or Laiva Hoffman at 503-649-3380, [email protected], or visit the website at blpaloha.com.

SCHOOL NEWS

Dear FHLCS families, The following message is from the school board regarding their next steps in calling a new Principal: The Call Committee and Board of Directors of FHLCS are excited to share that God has led us to extend a call to Mrs. Angela Schlie, of Elmhurst, IL to be our next principal. Angela has been a Lutheran educator for 22 years and has served as principal at Immanuel Lutheran School in Elmhurst since 2018. She is married to husband, Tim, with no children of their own. Fun fact about Angela is that she participates in the sport of curling – we have let her know that she could continue that activity through Evergreen Curling Club in Beaverton! We invite your prayers for Angela and Tim as they deliberate this call and consider where God is leading them in ministry. She now has 2 calls to consider, whether to remain at Immanuel or to join us at FHLCS. Please pray for peace, for clarity, and for confidence in her deliberation. As our Call Committee sought God’s will in identifying our next principal, we prayed that He lead us to discern, to understand, to accept, and to act upon His will. Feeling confident in His direction, we share those same prayers for Angela and Tim now. We ask for prayers for peace, clarity, and confidence for Immanuel Lutheran Church and School in Elmhurst, too, as they await Angela’s response and consider their future ministry.

JUNE 2021, VOL. 11 NO. 6

Dear Bethlehem, Last month I became an uncle to Zoey Grace Oswald. Her birth is a miracle I will happily share in person. From a practical level she simply shouldn’t have been born, though she was certainly

wanted. I don’t have kids of my own so the last time I held a newborn was 20 years ago. I had no idea just how gentle you had to be with a baby who is only 8 pounds and that their neck is literally just going to fly around. You let it go for a moment- it will do it’s own thing. Forward, backwards, sideways no idea where it’s going but it will be fast. You have to hold it all times. I’m very afraid I’m going to do the wrong thing and I will be holding just a head. The rules state every three hours you have to feed her, so she is woken up by her parents and they are woken up to feed her what I’m told will be months on in. Yet even though babies are fussy, smelly, and demand attention- they bring such a peace and calm. You have to slow down and be gentle and peaceful with them. All the while the baby you’re holding isn’t. God designed us to be held, especially as infants, but I don’t think we ever grow out of that. You don’t want to see your kid in pain when they cry, but you also know the kid will get through it and that a cry is a good sign. But you want to just be there for the child

YOUTH & CHILDREN NEWS

YOUTH & CHILDREN

Youth: June 6th is confirmation Sunday where Kristin

Agard will confirm her faith at the 11am service! Join us for that! June 13th will be graduation Sunday! We want to honor our high school and college graduates! Camp Lutherwood middle schoolers and now high schoolers

August 1st through the 6th. We will be getting info out to the

high schoolers soon about that week and what that means

for you guys! But we still have room available for more to go.

Ask Eric if you’re interested in being a part!

Children: VBS: Vacation Bible School will be August 16th

-21st this year. It will be Rocky Railway theme and likely will be done family style in the community center from 9:30-10:30am each day with take home fun of crafts and gizmos each day! Look for more details to come as we look to see how God’s power pulls us through! If you have any railroad themes and ideas let Eric know!

and relieve the pain. God has to be the same with us. God allows the pain sometimes so we can turn to Him, know His forgiveness and learn from our errors. But our pain doesn’t hurt Him- means He’s not a fan of co-dependency. “Oh you hurt yourself by lying again? Shocker! Yeah I got you. You need food- I made a lot. You need friendship- I filled the earth with people.” Whatever your need is- God provides- He’s literally provided everything for everyone- good or bad. Caring for others and infants is calming. I wonder if it’s calming for God too. There’s certainly moments where we’re somehow able to rise above the pains and toils of this world and see Jesus holding us and we realize- you know what I’m going to be alright. Ash Wednesday and Easter were those moments for me this year- we saw more people at church then we have in a year and it was a beautiful sound to hear so many singing and knowing God was and is with us. Though our pain doesn’t hurt God- Jesus is willing to take on all our sin and the pain it causes on the cross and when He did He held His arms out to us and says “This is my body given for you” so that we might be held by Him forever. Because of that we can rest well. Knowing God’s got us just like parents hold on to their children. God bless, Eric Oswald DCE

QUILTERS TO BEGIN MEETING AGAIN After over a year's break, the quilters are going to begin meeting on Monday mornings starting on June 7. We will start at 10:00 and go until around noon. Several ladies have met and put a bunch of quilts together so there are lots to be tied. We will be meeting in the Sonrise Room as usual. LWML-REBEKAH GUILD At the end of June the national LWML will be meeting in Lexington, KY for their in person convention. Even if we can't be there in person, they will be streaming live and you can watch if you wish. It is really almost better than being there!!! Just go to lwml.org starting June 24 and information should be available. The Mite Box will be out for donations on June 13 and the second Sunday of every month. Our local society has not met yet, but hopefully we can get something happening during the summer and be ready to go in the fall.

LWML AND QUILTERS

COMFORTS OF HOME COMFORTS OF HOME volunteers wish to extend our sincerest appreciation to those members of our congregation who answered our plea over the last several months for replenishing our inventory of bedding linens and kitchen items. Our outreach ministry to Love INC (In the Name of Christ) in Hillsboro continues to be a resource for people transitioning to housing as well as those who may find themselves in other circumstances causing their lives to be in a state of flux. We have been able to still serve our community as we adjusted to a curb-side pickup format of greeting families during the Covid 19 crisis. Thanks to all of YOU! Through You and your donations God makes it possible for us to continue to assist families in greater need

through our ministry here at Bethlehem.

As we move into June, the sun is shining, the grass is growing, and the library display has new books, so come check it out! For the present, the display is on the wall opposite the library door. Dig deeper into the love of God with John, the beloved disciple, or study the amazing change in Peter’s life, from faltering fisherman to courageous disciple. What do these two men have in common? Both were first-hand witnesses of Jesus’s ministry, death, and resurrection. Two great books currently on display: The Beloved Disciple: Following John to the Heart of Jesus by Beth Moore The Peter Promise: Powerful Principles from the Life of Peter by Luis Palau The library also offers books for children, located on the bottom shelf opposite the library door. Check out these fun titles on display!

Through the Roof (Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man) by Mary Manz Simon Thank you Jesus (Jesus Heals 10 Men with Leprosy) by Mary Manz Simon The bright, cartoony illustrations by Dennis Jones in this

series highlight the joy and wonder these people felt when

they witnessed Jesus perform a miracle that changed their

lives. Look in the children’s section for more books from

this series!

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE CHURCH LIBRARY

ACOLYTES:

Worship in the Lutheran tradition has a richness and depth that can bring great meaning to those who value symbolism and biblical imagery. Candles are a wonderful symbol in the church — usually associated with celebrations. But candles are also an important symbol of Jesus Christ, who is the light of the world. Acolytes help us focus our attention on Christ by lighting the candles in our sanctuary at the beginning of worship. They start by lighting their wicks from the Christ Candle — and then distributing that light among the other candles. So it is with us — our light comes from Christ, who invites us to “let your light shine before men.”

Acolytes are young people in grades 5th through 8th grade who serve in this role as one way of helping them to recognize that they are a vital part of the body of Christ, the church. If you are interested in acolyting, contact the office.

This month we begin a new series of interviews with our board members. Dan Jeffery, President of t h e B o a r d , k i c k s o f f t h e s e r i e s . Q: What has been your favorite experiences on the Love INC Board of Directors? A: A decade ago, our local Love INC founder Carol, recruited me to the Love INC Development Board. I served on that Board for 2 years, took some years off, and then rejoined the Board four year ago. Those first couple years were exciting times learning about the Love INC mission and model and working to implement it here in Hillsboro. A highlight from the last 4 years has been

coordinating our Love INC Golf Event. I have enjoyed being involved in every part of it: planning, promoting, and, of course, golfing in it! It is such a great day! It is so good when the Body of Christ, from different churches, can get together to play and help raise necessary funds to allow Love INC to continue its work to reach our neighbors with the Love of Christ.
