Our normal learn to fly program concludes early next week and then we will run an extension program for our ‘high flyers’ including a cross-country flight. Thank you to our flying instructors, Gavin and Reg, for all their work with our students, and for providing our students with this unique experience for the last twelve years. Thank you to Shaun Theiber for co-ordinating travel arrangements for the program. Special thanks to Barrie and Garry, our support staff members, for driving the students down and back to Batchelor each day. VACATION SCHOOLS PROGRAM In the last week of this coming July four week school holiday break we will again be conducting our Academies of Excellence Vacation Schools extension program. Students will have the opportunity to complete programs in a variety of areas including dance, creative writing (with published children’s authors), visual art (in different medium with different instructors), and engine design and app development for android phones (with Charles Darwin University Engineering lecturers). We will be circulating an information flyer to all Year 6-12 students in the last week of the term, and placing this information on our School website. (Thank you to Madelaine Brand, Dean of Administration at the Senior College, for all her work organising this program). SIX SCHOOL WEEKS UNTIL OUR ANNUAL FETE Our Fete, the Nightcliff Community Fair, is our largest fund raising and friend raising event for the year. It is now only six school weeks away! Early Learning Notices ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT YEARS 4-9/MIDDLE SCHOOL Darwin Libraries With the celebration of National Literacy and Numeracy Week in the second week of Term 3, students and families are reminded of the invaluable information source at our doorsteps, our Libraries. Year 7 students reported excellent access and success when searching for resources for their Term 2 SOSE Viking assignments. At times, students given a research task find themselves frustrated as online information is not clear, reliable or relevant. Libraries now provide an impressive and up-to-date catalogue of fiction and non-fiction books, CDs, DVDs, magazines and encyclopaedias, which are all available for browsing and borrowing. As the holidays approach, students might familiarise themselves with their local Library and develop skills in accessing useful resources for both school work and leisure. Libraries are located in Casuarina, Darwin City, Karama and Nightcliff. Libraries are free and membership is easily arranged. Please visit http://www.darwin.nt.gov.au/libraries/library-locations for more information. Middle School Student Stationery Supplies for Term 3 Year 6 to 9 students are required to re-stock their stationery supplies to enable a productive start to Term Three. Pens, pencils, a ruler, eraser, sharpener and a calculator are the basic requirements for all classes. Please check and determine which items are required. As students remain in their Homerooms for a significant portion of the day, labelled items are easily returned to their owner. Well-resourced students will facilitate a positive start to Semester 2. Louise Hand Assistant Principal Years 4-9

Early Learning Notices CSIRO Incursion The Transition classes were very excited to learn all about minibeasts on Thursday when the CSIRO visited our school. The Transition children were able to participate in fun and educational hands-on activities to increase their knowledge of minibeasts. This is a wonderful way for the students to finish their term topic and consolidate their learning. Transition to Year 3 Athletics Carnival On Friday 14

th June, the Transition

children were involved in the Transition

to Year 3 Athletics Carnival. It was great to see so many of our families come along on the day to help cheer on and support the children. Thank you to Adam Gulla and Karly Denmead for their organisation of this event. Preschool 5 Orientation On Friday, the Preschool 5 children participated in their very first orientation session to Miss Nicole’s Pre-Transition class. The children really enjoyed looking around the ‘big school’ classroom and finding all of the fun resources they have in their classroom next term. In Week 10 the Preschool 5 children will have their final orientation visit. Contact Details I have now moved offices to Room 17A. This is situated at the far end of the Educational Administration Centre in the next set of offices. If you wish to contact me at any stage my door is always open, Phone: 89850186/Email: [email protected]. Rhiannon Hale Early Childhood Coordinator Preschool Long Day Care Centre (Wombats) On the Monday 27

th May, our morning

group had an incursion from Alzheimer’s NT Australia. During the incursion, the children sang some old nursery rhymes and our visitors joined in with their favourites including: ‘Twinkle, twinkle’ and ‘Jack and Jill’. After this, the children and our visitors made puppet people and box ‘houses’ for them to live in. It was a wonderful incursion and we look forward to seeing our four friends Ernie, Jacqueline, Helen and Ralph again. This week we have been learning about sustainability and recycling in Wombats. We have used recycled paper in Art and made it into wrapping paper to wrap ‘presents’ for our families. We also cut out pages out of old magazines into strips to make decorations for the top of our ‘presents’. This activity is promoting the children’s cutting skills and fine-motor skills through folding and wrapping. On Tuesday the children were so excited to see that their seeds have grown into healthy pumpkin shoots. The children enjoy watering the plants each day. Please can all parents ensure that the front door of the Wombats’ classroom

is properly closed after you enter and exit. REMINDER – Please can all parents ensure that if your child requires care during the school holidays that you book by Friday 21st June so that we can finalise staffing. Helpful tips for parents: Take photos of your child’s artworks and projects and store them safely in a digital archive. If you have any questions about our program, or would like to speak to our staff, please call our direct number on Phone: 8985 0124. Miss Daisy and the Wombats Staff Preschool It has been a short week but a productive one. The Preschoolers have been busy completing their usual weekly program. We welcome back Miss Donna who was away for a week due to illness. To continue our fascination with juicing and making drinks, we made some yummy smoothies for cooking. Preschool 1 and 2 have been fostering their creative artistic skills each, creating a mural for the Darwin Show Art Exhibition Competition. Both murals are interesting and colourful, yet different. The children have done a great job! Preschool 5 will begin their orientation this Friday to Pre-Transition. The children will be attending Assembly at 8.30am and will then visit Miss Nicole's class in Room T1 at 11.00am. Thank you to our classroom helpers for the week: Jodi, Lachlan's Mum, from Preschool 1. Thank you everyone and we look forward to a great last week of term. Miss Nerida and Miss Christine

Junior School Notices Year 1A McGilchrist This week, students have enjoyed sharing their favourite thing so far about Year 1 in their News presentations. It has been lovely to hear students reflect on their experiences so far throughout 2013. In Literacy, students have enjoyed finalising their work on character descriptions. We hope you enjoy reading and looking at our new work displayed on our classroom window.

Junior School Report During Maths, students have been looking at multiplication. Students have participated in a series of grouping activities, using their whiteboards and working in groups to model different examples of this. Students have been familiarising themselves with the different terminology such as ‘groups of’ and ‘times’ that are associated with this concept. Students have also enjoyed measuring the heights of their dwarf beans and using this information to make a class graph. They have found it interesting comparing the growth and physical appearance of those plants getting sunlight, compared to those that have not had any sunlight at all. 1A enjoyed their last Art lesson for the term by painting an apron. As we have been looking at ‘Life in the Top End’, students made an apron to reflect on the many outdoor meals and barbeques enjoyed throughout the Dry season. Students had a wonderful time at the House Athletics Carnival and would like to thank all of the parents and caregivers who came to cheer 1A along. Melanie McGilchrist Year 2A Pearce This week and last have been super busy! In Maths, we have completed an investigation using 2D & 3D shapes! We designed castles using only 2D and 3D shapes, and then made them out of paper! We absolutely loved constructing these castles in pairs and they look great! Come and see them on display in our room.

This week we have started looking at calendars, months and seasons. If you have any spare 2013 calendars or older, could we please borrow them to help us with our Maths? Thank you to everyone who has already brought us some! In History, we have looked at Bush Tucker, and next week we will look at how Indigenous people made medicines. We have also started designing Aboriginal Artworks (both modern and traditional dot paintings on canvas) to send to the Darwin Art Show – these are now finished and are being sent to the Art Show to be displayed! Congratulations to this week’s award winners, Nicolas and Grace. Chloe Pearce Year 2B McBride Week 9 was another busy and jam packed week in 2B – especially considering it was only a four day week! Today the class had a fabulous time at the Year 2-3 House Athletics Carnival and enjoyed rotating between the different sports. It was great to see all of the students having a go, trying their best and displaying excellent sports and team skills. This week we have continued learning about healthy food choices and why it is important to lead healthy lifestyles and have healthy friendships. The students enjoyed writing a mystery letter to another student in the class, telling them why they think they are fantastic. The class also enjoyed reading out the mystery letter they

received to the class and listening to some of the reasons why we are all so special. We finished our ‘Under the Sea’ class mural for the Darwin Show this week and it is now ready to be submitted to the show. It looks absolutely wonderful and all of the students did a fantastic job sticking on crepe paper to create the sky, sea and sand of the ocean ecosystem. The class should all be very proud of their efforts and the end result is testament to their hard work and focus over the last couple of weeks! On Thursday next week, we will celebrate the end of semester with a shared healthy lunch with the other Year 2 classes. We will also watch a movie together and there will be some fun activities to celebrate all of their wonderful achievements over the first semester. Please return the permission slips on the letters sent home as soon as possible. Congratulations to Jayden, Sahasra and Ethan for being awarded Merit Certificates this week. A big thank you to Miss Anna, Natalie’s Mum, for coming in to listen to the students read throughout the week. With next week being the last week of semester, please remember to return all class readers and library books as early as possible. Susannah McBride Year 2C Hartley One more week to go! This week we have been revisiting 2D and 3D shapes through a Maths investigation. Students were asked to design a castle using only 2D and 3D shapes. We enjoyed making these, and photos will be placed onto Edukite for viewing. Also this week, we have been focusing on finishing our draft and good copy narrative stories. This term we have been learning about the structure of a narrative and how all the parts work to make an exciting story. We cannot wait to see the finished products. Students participated in a fun House Athletics Carnival on Friday, showcasing many skills they have mastered from their sports lessons. A reminder for all library books to be returned by the end of term. If books have been lost, please see Ms Kathy. A note was sent out regarding preparations for the Fete. As we have Jar Surprise, it would be lovely for

Year 3B Decurtins Only one more week until the end of Term 2! We have had a very busy, yet rewarding, term and we are all in need of a well-earned break to rest and recharge our batteries. For the past fortnight, our writing activities have been based around the children using their creativity and imagination. Last week’s task required the children to write about three things that they would wish for and why. This week’s task required the children to pretend that they were super heroes. The children wrote some amusing, creative texts and enjoyed sharing them with the class. During Maths, we have been focusing on different angles and division. We have also been playing a few Maths games in order to improve our mental recall of addition and subtraction facts. Leonie Decurtins Year 4A Brierley Students have been conducting an experiment on germs this week. They observed and recorded information about the effects that germs have on a potato that has been touched by clean hands, dirty hands or not touched at all. In English, we have been busy using our knowledge of Vikings to write a historical narrative, incorporating our grammatical knowledge of adverbs, adjectives and phrases to make our writing more interesting. Congratulations to Matilda Nathan and Thomas Bottolfsen for receiving Merit Certificates this week. Helen Brierley Student Representative Council This year, the Student Representative Council (SRC) has been very busy working on many different activities, projects and fundraisers. We have raised money for the Red Cross and the RSPCA. The students have been involved in planning and organising these events from scratch and have been excellent in helping on the day of the event.

The SRC have been proving themselves as responsible students and have been reminding peers of school rules and safe play. They should be very proud of themselves for the job they have done so far. The SRC have organised cake stalls, the Mother’s Day stall, guess the eggs competition, RSPCA colouring in competition and free dress days throughout Semester 1. They have also been involved in speaking at Assemblies each week and passing on information to the whole school. Thank you to all the parents who supported us throughout the semester. You helped us make cupcakes, slices and advertising signs for the school! We could not have done it without your contributions to our fundraisers. Also, we need to thank everyone who purchased our goods and supported the charities involved each time. Our hope for next term is that we can raise as much money as possible for charities, like we did this semester, and continue to take on more responsibilities in our roles as SRC members. The SRC Dream Team Tournament of Minds (ToM) 2013 During the past two weeks we have been accepting expressions of interest from students in Year 4-10 for 2013 Tournament of Minds (ToM). In the next couple of weeks, after consultation with parents, we will commence team selection in

preparation for the challenge in Term 3. If your child has expressed an interest in participating in this event we will contact you to let you know, and confirm with you their availability to take part in this exciting and valuable learning opportunity. In past years, we have experienced great success in this event and have represented the Northern Territory in the Mathematical Engineering, Literacy, Social Sciences and Applied Technology in the Australasian Pacific Finals. The ToM program is a very exciting and rewarding experience for students. Past team members realise the importance of ongoing commitment, dedication and positive team work when participating in ToM. If your child is interested in joining a team, they need to be aware that there will be regular meetings, workshops and rehearsals to attend throughout the final week of Term 2 and Term 3 (many are held after school and/or on the weekend). They also need to be an active member of their team by attending all of these sessions. More information about ToM will be provided in future Bulletins, but should you like to read more about it in the meantime I recommend visiting the ToM webisite: www.tom.edu.au. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me: [email protected]. Jo Masters

Middle School Report Middle School Notices Year 6A Edwards As the term draws to an end and we can see our well-earned break coming closer, 6A are still working very hard. For the last two weeks we have claimed the Hey Pronto trophy (drawing with 6C this week) which we are all very proud of. In Maths, we have been learning about data and have been collecting data on which exercises are the most popular. We have been using a premade sheet with exercises which we will turn into a pie graph later in the week. Last week (Week 8) we collected data relating to how many laps we could do between cones laid out at different distances. It was pleasing to see everyone participate and document improvements across the week. In English, we have been doing creative story writing. Students have really taken well to planning out their pieces. Below are some excerpts from the stories, some of which are still a work in progress:

I was walking along the road of district 12 when it happened. The Capital seized control again and under the control of President Leaf everyone knew what would happen.... Ken was on the roof when he saw a plane, when he looked at it closely he saw that it had the word ‘war’ on it.... Once in a kingdom was a very happy castle where a baby named Antyour was born. While in a kingdom further away was another castle not so happy. At this castle was a baby named Peter...

One more week to go before a well-earned break! Tarrant Edwards Year 6C Morvant It is hard to believe that there is only one more week until the mid-year holidays! The students have been working industriously on many tasks and are always busy. This week we changed our room around into a big ‘C’ shape and there seems to be even more space now! It was lovely to have a long weekend last week. This week has really flown by and we only have five more days until a lovely big four week block. I wish all families the best for their travels. I hear of some amazing trips that will be happening. Joe Christie has headed off to the USA for a holiday and many others are traveling here or there. Connor McCabe is very happy to be going to see his AFL team, Sydney, play at the MCG in Melbourne. It is perfect weather for camping too. I hope you all enjoy our glorious Dry season with friends and family. We ask parents to deliver their donations of slabs of Soft Drink or bottles of water to the Middle School Office so we can start to stockpile for the Fete. You can contact me on [email protected] with any questions or to let me know what you would like to contribute. Please remember to bring your drink bottle and hat to school each day to stay SunSmart. Donna Morvant

Year 8E Lewis This year, 8E will be running the Pre-Loved Book Stall at the Essington Fete. We need your help to ensure that the stall is a success! Could you please donate any unwanted books that you may have, whether they are: fiction, non-fiction, for babies, children, teens, or adults. Your books can be delivered to 8E Homeroom (MS17) or ask your classroom teacher to contact Ms Lewis and a representative will come down to your classroom to collect them. 8E would like to thank you for your assistance. Kathryn Lewis

Middle School Report Design and Technology Electives Year 8 and 9 students have been busy designing and building projects during their Design and Technology elective classes this term. There are currently three Year 8 Introductory Materials Technology classes and four Year 9 Advanced Materials Technology classes making the finishing touches to their projects as the semester, and elective classes, come to a close. During Year 8 Introductory Materials, students have learned about safety in the workshop, and learned the safe use of a variety of hand tools, portable power tools and machines. This term students have made and taken home a wooden chopping board, a moulded acrylic bowl and a money box or box with a fitted lid of their own design. Having already gained skills during Introductory Materials Technology, students create individually designed and constructed projects during Year 9 Advanced Materials Technology. Projects may be constructed from a variety of materials including timber, acrylic and/or electronics. Examples of the variety of projects this term have included Leon Danicic’s sewing cabinet, Max Oliphant-Hand’s toy truck, Jorja Foster’s angular bedside cabinet, Callum Murfitt’s skateboard jump, Amy Bottolfsen’s boat shaped cabinet, Tom Johnston’s chair and Billy Melas’ dog house. Some students are currently preparing their projects for entry in the Craft section of the Royal Darwin Show. They are welcome to have extra time in the workshop with Mrs Boots on Tuesday and Thursday lunch times. Students can write their name on the form on the Room MS10 door if they wish to attend at lunch. Next semester, new elective classes are chosen. Please note that a materials fee applies to all Design and Technology electives. The following options will be available within the Design and Technology area:

Year 8 Introductory Materials Technology (for students who did not study it in Semester 1) Year 8 Advanced Materials Technology (for students who have already completed Introductory in Semester 1) Year 9 Introductory Materials Technology (for Year 9 students who have little or no experience in this subject area) Year 9 Advanced Materials Technology (for students who have completed Year 8 or 9 Introductory and are confident in this subject area) Year 9 Technology Arts (Concrete sculpture, jewellery making, fabrics and sewing, open to any student)

The Senior College reports will be posted out in the first week of the holiday period. As part of the quality assurance process, all Mathematics and English work for Stage 1 subjects is being moderated next week. Peter Moore Dean of Studies Duke of Edinburgh Notices Last Wednesday, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Organisation held their second awards night at Government House. Of the fifty three students who received awards, twenty six were from Essington. The evening was attended by Her Honour, the Honourable Sally Thomas AM, Leah Finocchiaro, Victoria Cox (Duke’s Alumni) and the many proud parents. The speaker for the evening was Victoria Cox, who is a fifth year medical student at the University of Adelaide. Victoria has accomplished many things in her life which she so kindly shared with the Awardees. One of her greatest achievements was being the first and only South Australian female to swim the Rottnest Channel. The award at Essington has evolved over the years and we are now the biggest operator in the Northern Territory. I would like to personally congratulate all of our students who received awards on the evening and also thank our parents in the community for your continued support in this area.
