Emblems – movements that bring words and phrases to the observer’s mind and are directly translatable into words (p 222)
Classes of Body Movement
Illustrators – these are directly linked to verbal messages and clarify or explain what has been said; emphasize the verbal message (p 222)
Affect displays – reflect the intensity of emotions and feelings; anger, love, etc (p 223)

Regulators – control the flow of conversation; hand gestures or vocal changes (p 223)
Adaptors – unintentional body movements in reaction to boredom or stress; also could be social taboos such as picking your teeth or nose in public
Eye Contact
Eyes can be seen as the receivers of information
How we look at someone (intensity or straight on, etc) can make the difference in the direction the interaction will take
