The “office” processes that support our
businesses and customers are filled with
activity that does not add value (i.e. waste).
This creates barriers in communication,
resourcing issues, complicated employee
onboarding, quality gaps and employee
frustration which prevents organizations from
taking it to the next level.
This workshop is an interactive training that
will provide Lean background information to
sell the methodology and engage all levels of
the organization for the greatest impact.
You will learn common Lean Office tools and
the importance of communication and
strategy to positively drive Lean Culture. The
final hour will be open for Round Table
discussion. Each participant will have the
opportunity to share their challenges and
receive expert advice on how to address and
next steps for delivering success.

As you know, another nuance this year is the
change of our institutional name. We will now
become the Institute of Industrial Systems
Engineers (IISE), formerly the Institute of Industrial
Engineers (IIE). In anticipation of the big reveal at
this year’s Annual Conference, our chapter will be
making various updates (e.g., logos, website,
marketing materials, etc.) to align with this
announcement. It is an exciting time not only for
our chapter, but for the entire institute. As we
continue to learn more about what this change will
bring, we will make sure to update you on any
impact it will have on our chapter and its
members.
I look forward to a great year and am eager to
increase the engagement across our IISE Twin
Cities chapter under our new name.
Sincerely,
Jeromy

Jeromy Knapp, IISE Twin Cities President.
My name is Jeromy Knapp and I am your 2016 Twin
Cities Chapter President. I have been a part of this

A few weeks ago the Board of Directors had our
strategic meeting for 2016 and are excited for what
we’ve planned for the chapter this year. From
training workshops and tours, to networking

all will find something to get involved with and
hopefully, will invite others to explore as well.

Focus On: Student Outreach

Student outreach and development is always a
priority for IISE Twin Cities and is something
many board members are very passionate
about. We remember our time as students and
how being active with IISE helped us in many
ways: scholarships, leadership opportunities,
networking and mentorships. It is always very
rewarding to “carry it forward” and contribute
to the development of our next generation of
IEs and hope they will be inspired to continue
with their professional involvement.
How do we help with student development?
Every year we award scholarships to IE
students in the region who are active in their
student chapter. Thanks for all the
submissions, it is wonderful to see so many
involved and enthusiastic IE students! The
2015 scholarship winners are listed below.
We also try to foster the development of
regional student chapters. Special thanks to
Nate Andrican, our Student Liaison Director,
who does a fantastic of job of staying
connected with students and setting up our
annual student networking event at Dave &
Busters!
We contribute to the Student Regional
Conference every year with a monetary
donation as well as trying to send board
members to give a presentation at the
conference. This year’s student conference will
be held in Chicago this March.
On February 23rd
a few board members will be
visiting the Dunwoody student chapter to talk
about their IE career paths followed by a Q&A
session. Dunwoody is a fairly new student
chapter in the area and it’s wonderful to see
them doing so well!
We hope that you will place this on your list of
reasons to be involved with and supportive of
IISE Twin Cities! Want to know how you can be
involved in youth and student outreach? E-mail
us at [email protected] or talk to one of
the board members at the next event.

6 IISE Year End Social Event, December 2015
Past Event Recap
Knowing that “distilleries are the new craft brewery”, a dozen members of the ever-hip IISE Twin
Cities, ended 2015 with a toast and tour at DuNord Craft Distillery located in southern
Minneapolis. Not only did we partake in our annual holiday toasts, but we also answered
“why?!” and “how??” to many of the questions we didn’t even know we had!
The process starts with Minnesota-grown grains which are “mashed” to create a sweet liquid.
That liquid is eventually be fermented into what is essentially an un-hopped beer and then
distilled to remove the alcohol. From this, only the middle of every run (Hearts) is saved for
bottling and the undesirable parts of the distillate (Heads and Tails) are discarded.
DuNord regularly conducts weekend tours so feel free to check it out yourself. (Yes, you get to bring your drink along!)

What is IISE?
IISE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering
profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Founded in 1948, IISE is an international, non-profit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training,
research and development of industrial engineering.
With approximately 15,000 members and 280 chapters worldwide, IISE’s primary mission is to meet the ever-changing needs of industrial engineers, which includes
undergraduate and graduate students, engineering practitioners and consultants in all industries,
engineering managers, and engineers in education, research and government.
What is IISE Twin Cities?
The IISE Twin Cities Chapter 38 provides a network for individuals within Minnesota and surrounding areas to
collaborate about industrial engineering. Our members include professionals with industrial engineering degrees, both working in IE and non-IE roles and
professionals working in IE related functions.
We provide monthly events which include topics in professional development, Lean, Six Sigma, Quality,
process improvement and tours at distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, hospitals and consulting firms. We also promote the industrial engineering profession by providing scholarships to IE students and becoming
involved with several student IISE chapters.
