I have found the most valuable thing in my wallet is my library card. -- Laura Bush, Former First Lady
chapter oneNiles Public Library District
While many libraries are feeling the sting of budget shortfalls and laying off staff, shuttering their doors and
wondering how to maintain their current program load, the Niles Public Library is thriving. Through thoughtful long-term planning we’ve managed to maintain healthy balances and are ready for future challenges. We can easily meet our debt obligations, make capital improvements and expand not only our lending collection, but our technology and programming as well. This is the purpose of library boards, to spend wisely, plan well and look to the future. September is library card sign-up month – you can sign up in confidence. We’ll be there for you now and long into the future.
A message from Niles Public Library District
Board President Morgan Dubiel
We’re up when you are!
Job Seekers! Your Niles Public Library Card Can Be Your Best Friend
According to a national survey by the American Library Association, 88 percent of libraries now offer access to job databases.
Public libraries are uniquely positioned to help job seekers and anyone wishing to change careers. In addition to industry or job-specific books, libraries provide access to online information through specialty databases. Niles Library staff Business Librarian Judy McNulty says, “Looking for a job is a job in itself and, to do it right, you need access to career information 24/7.”
Here at Niles, our 2010 use statistics for the job skills databases listed below have been steady with spikes in January, February, and June. Since June 2009, 946 people have used our job skills databases.
Check out two of the most popular ones: Adult Career Center Powered by Tutor.com
9AM - 10PM tutoring in resume review, job search, and interview preparation. The Skills Center is available 24/7.
Learning Express Use these practice tests for career exploration, com-puter skills, job search and workplace skills, and professional and technical examinations.
Look at How Library Card Holders are Using Their Cards:
• At the Niles Public Library, users logged on to our website more than 400,000 times during the past year. • We are on track to reach 500,000 in 2010. • An average of 2000 patrons use our wireless Internet service each month, more than twice as many as in 2008. • About 30 patrons each month take our free hands-on computer classes, learning everything from the basics of using e-mail to creating powerful Power Point presentations. • Use of our online databases, which Niles Library card holders can
access from home, have increased nearly 40% since last year. • Close to 1,000 people have “clicked through” to
our job skills databases to learn a skill or prac-tice testing to help them in their job search.

Kindred spirits Eric Howell, Michael Mahler and Frank Canino were all possessed by the spirit and music of The Beatles from an early age, and though miles away from each other, spent their childhoods in the Chicago suburbs perfecting the chords and harmonies in the "Beatles Complete" songbook.
.A lifelong Beatlemaniac singer/songwriter, Michael’s songs have won him several awards including the John Lennon songwriting scholarship. As an actor, this lifelong Beatlemaniac has appeared at the Goodman, the Court Theatre, the Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre and others. Eric is no stranger to Chicago's “Fest For Beatles Fans”, be it performing in the grand ballroom or simply attending "the Fest" for over 20 years running.
It was at “the Fest” that Eric met Frank, a Beatles fanatic who so closely resembles the mannerisms of John Lennon that he went on to portray John in a Las Vegas Beatles tribute band called The Fab Four. These “three cool cats” will bring their guitars, spirit and love of all things Beatles to the Niles Library "cafe".
